Who Would You Be Without Your Story: Dialogues with Byron Katie ReviewThis book is a series of dialogues taken from workshops and seminars, so you get a good flavor of what it would be like to attend one. The dialogues, like The Work, aren't spectator sports. Reading her technique without trying it gets zero results, and reading these dialogues without 'playing along' may also yield very little results. However, if you dive in as an active audience member, these dialogues take you deeper than you may have gone doing The Work on your own.
I first discovered _Loving What Is_ a few years ago when I was going through a tough time, and couldn't get my brain out of the hamsterwheel of 'why did this happen?' 'what did I do wrong?' and most of all 'why can't I get over this?'. In less than an hour of doing The Work, my entire perspective changed. It was almost miraculous. Needless to say, I've been a believer ever since.
This isn't to say I agree with everything Katie says. And I do find her calling everyone 'sweetheart' a bit wearing. She says in one book (and again in this) something to the effect that if her kids ever tell her they won't miss her when she dies she'll celebrate because they'll be 'free.' That's a little harsh, to me. I don't aim to go that far! But that doesn't mean that I can't go a long way on the journey with good results.
The Work isn't easy, and it takes a certain amount of patience and mental flexibility to do it right. In a sense it's a relief to read these dialogues because you realize you're not the only one who reaches these walls in your thinking; and you get to see how Katie helps them break through, which you can then apply yourself.
If you're new to Byron Katie's works, there is a tiny appendix and the Judge Your Neighbor form in the book, but I don't think that's quite enough--doing the 'turn it around' statements is tricky for beginners and the appendix doesn't focus on those. You can learn by careful study of the dialogues, but you may find her website or her earlier books to be more helpful. If you've got her other books, don't pass this one over as quickly as you might. It served as a needed reinforcement for me, and in her parts of the conversations there are plenty of wonderful insights--mine is already heavily underlined.Who Would You Be Without Your Story: Dialogues with Byron Katie Overview

Living with Joy: Keys to Personal Power and Spiritual Transformation (Earth Life Series) ReviewIncredibly profound in content.
Having gone through the whole "Conversations With God" (CWG) series as well as "Friendship with God", I wondered how this book would compare in principle--and I'm happy to say quite favorably. It seems truth IS universal, despite varying styles.
Whereas CWG was mind-blowing in it's eloquence, "Living With Joy" seemed almost child-like in it's gentle manner. Like a patient teacher, it takes your hand and walks you through precisely what it means to live a life based on joy. And what a delightful, refreshing, thought-provoking and ultimately life-changing stroll it is.
I especially liked Orin's admonition to take what he says and use what resonates for you, personally, and leave the rest behind. A good principle, I feel, when reading anything pertaining to our individual growth paths. Having said that, I found that almost all of it resonated with me, deeply and profoundly. You may, too.
Read it for the light it can bring. Live it for the positive changes it can invoke. Love it for the joy we can all share and partake of. Highly recommended.Living with Joy: Keys to Personal Power and Spiritual Transformation (Earth Life Series) Overview

Return to the Heart of God: The Practical Philosophy of A Course in Miracles ReviewReturn to the Heart of God is by far the best book I've ever read about A Course in Miracles, and I've read many. It would've been so helpful having the teachings in this book prior to, or even during, my first time through ACIM however, I'm now actually looking forward to reading ACIM again with the new found understanding that Robert Perry provides in this book.
Normally I read books then pass them along or sell them here on Amazon, but Return to the Heart of God is one of the very rare books that are staying right here with me.Return to the Heart of God: The Practical Philosophy of A Course in Miracles Overview

Living in the Now: How to Live as the Spiritual Being That You Are ReviewI have always found that attempts to live the life described by the Enlightened Masters to be fairly challenging. Most of us experience a more finite and progressive awakening process than what these Masters did, where the untamed mind and ego still plays a key role in our lives. Gina Lake's books are enormously powerful in helping one to understand the mind and ego in relation to consciousness, and progressively lessen the gap, so that we may live increasingly "enlightened" lives. I joke with my friends that her book, "Living In The Now..." is like Eckhart Tolle on steroids. It is enormously powerful and will assuredly have a favorable impact on your life. It is a must read for all those who are more interested in `Being', rather than simple intellectual understanding.Living in the Now: How to Live as the Spiritual Being That You Are Overview

Spirituality For Dummies ReviewThis is truly a gem of a book. It is inspiring and illuminating. The author helps us to recognize (and live) the spirituality in every day life. I find it incredibly uplifting. If I am feeling down, I need only open it to a random page, and I find something helpful. It is not a book only to be read, but to be experienced as well. There are many helpful tools to help drive home many of the points. Don't be put off by this, though. You can still get a lot out of it even if you choose not to partake in the exercises. Even if you don't agree with my five stars, I recommend you buy this book anyway. It is well worth the cost of the included CD alone.Spirituality For Dummies Overview

Dancing with Life: Buddhist Insights for Finding Meaning and Joy in the Face of Suffering ReviewMost of the Dharma books that I've read fall into two categories: lightweight new-age fluff or heavily-footnoted scholarship. This book avoids both extremes. It's very compactly written, with no apparent filler. (If anything, I think he is too brief in touching on some important points.) I find the title of the book to be a bit unfortunate, but it's actually appropriate to the subject matter.
The book is structured around the Four Noble Truths, and as a long-time Buddhist (with a strong predilection for scholarly detail) I thought that it couldn't teach me anything new. It did, though, and on a number of levels. You might think you know all about the 4NT, but this version from the Samyutta Nikaya really adds a new dimension, and is directly applicable to one's practice.
In short, I give this book a pretty-much unqualified rave. A few stylistic weaknesses and an overuse of italics, but in content it's deeply inspiring and immediately useful.Dancing with Life: Buddhist Insights for Finding Meaning and Joy in the Face of Suffering Overview

Cosmic Consciousness ReviewThis study is from the early days of the psychiatric profession when its practitioners could still write seriously of spiritual and mystical matters without being ostracised or ridiculed as "unscientific." Briefly, the author personally experienced a sudden episode of enlightenment and rapture that, while it was only of brief duration, changed his outlook on life forever. He spent the rest of his life, he was in his mid-thirties at the time, trying to figure out what had happened to him, and if there were any others.
What he found was that such sudden occurances of enlightenment, these epiphanies, had been occuring to mystics, philosophers, writers, and artists all through recorded history. Not only that, but they were occuring with increased frequency as time went on. Bucke concluded that this marked an evolutionary trend. Carried out to its logical conclusion, he postulated that one day "cosmic consciousness" as he termed it, would be as common in the human race as self consciousness currently is. He based this on the manner in which the ancestors of man slowly climbed from the simple consciousness of animals to an almost universal state of self consciousness.
Having experienced a simular event in my mid-thirties (remember, it happens to varying degrees), I found this book to be immensely personally relevant- as it has proven to be to many of us for over one hundred years now.Cosmic Consciousness Overview

The Art of Spiritual Peacemaking: Secret Teachings from Jeshua ben Joseph ReviewI have studied "A Course in Miracles" for years, and in my opinion "The Art of Spiritual Peacemaking" is the bridge that I have been waiting for. I hesitate to call it the sequel to "A Course in Miracles", but it is the same information and practices put into more straightforward and understandable language. I am only on lesson 29 out of 365, but I can tell you that the insights that I have gained already have changed my life on a daily basis. I can't wait to get up the next morning and read the daily reading and lesson. The practices are simple yet profound when applying them to your day. I cannot recommend this book enough to those on the spiritual path of getting in touch with their soul and the only reality that will bring you true peace. It has helped me to forgive and to see myself as mistaken in the way I have been looking at the world instead of "guilty". For anyone who has stuggled with "A Course in Miracles" you will find this to be the bridge that you have been waiting for!The Art of Spiritual Peacemaking: Secret Teachings from Jeshua ben Joseph Overview

A Thousand Names for Joy: Living in Harmony with the Way Things Are ReviewI wrote a glowing review for "Loving What Is," so it only seems right that I give my impression of this book. I didn't enjoy it as much, and it left me with a very confused impression of who Byron Katie is, and what she actually believes.
I'm not discounting Katie's experiences, but in reading it I occasionally got a sense of contrived ingenuousness. Sometimes it's innocent enough ("I trip and fall down. It must be time for a rest!") other times it's almost heartless, such as when she runs into friends of the family she hasn't seen in several years, and when they ask "how is your dear mother" she replies, "She's wonderful. She's dead." She goes on to write: "Silence. The smiles were gone. I saw that they were having a problem, but I didn't know what it was. When [my daughter] and I were outside the store, she turned to me and said "Mom, when you talk to people like that, they can't handle it." That hadn't occurred to me. I was just telling the truth."

This is a sixty year old woman writing. No matter what happened to her to change her worldview so substantially, surely she still has an idea of social mores and compassion. When my mother dies someday, and if I run into some old friends of hers, I would expect to tell them the news in a kinder way.

Later in the book she talks about the fact that loving what is can seem heartless, and says that no matter what happens -- no matter how terrible -- she rejoices in it. "When I woke up from the dream of Byron Katie, there was nothing left, and the nothing was benevolent. It's so benevolent that it wouldn't reappear, it wouldn't re-create itself. The worst thing could happen, the worst imagination of horror...and it would see that as grace, it would even celebrate, it would open its arms and sing "Hallelujah! ... It cares totally, and it doesn't care at all, not one bit...it's in love with what is, whatever for that may take."

And yet, she also talks about the fact that she would speak from a place of compassion to a woman hitting a child. But, if the mother is hitting the child, and the child is in pain, obviously this "is" and must be "the best thing that can happen." Why try to change the best thing?
I believe wholeheartedly in accepting reality, but I can't accept that just because it "is" that we are to rejoice in it. When a child is molested and thrown into an outhouse toilet to die, as happened in Colorado about 10 years ago, should I say "Hallelujah!"? I can accept that it happened, and that things like this happen, but I do not see that just because they are, that they are cause for joy. I can agree with Eckhart Tolle ("The Power of Now") when he writes that we should either accept situations completely, or take steps to change them. If I can do anything to protect the children in my family from predators, I will do so. If one of them, god forbid, is kidnapped and hurt, then I will accept that and move forward. But, rejoicing seems wrong.
Katie writes about "being lived" instead of living, about watching her hand move to "hold a cup of anything and drink it, a liquid I call tea, for example, but I can never know that either." Her job, she writes, is to delete herself.

But it sounds as if she was deleted already. She didn't do "the work" to experience her life transformation. By her own account she was in utter despair and unable to be around anyone. She woke up one day no longer "Byron Katie." "At the beginning" she writes, "in 1986, I lived in a state of continuous rapture ... if someone asked what my name was, I might say, 'I don't have one.' They would say 'your name is Katie,' and I'd say 'No, it's not.' The would say 'you're a woman,' and I'd say 'That's not my experience.' ... It's mature now. When people ask me my name, I'll say 'Katie.' I'll say, 'It's cool this evening,' or 'Come look at the clouds, sweetheart' ... if you tell me its a tree, I'll agree with you."
So, it seems that Byron Katie was obliterated one night in 1986, and some non-being, some universal "now" took her place and had to learn to communicate and live in human society. In doing so, she's now teaching anyone who will listen how to get to the same point. But, I don't want to be deleted. I like having an identity, and thoughts, and at least the idea that when my hand moves I'm moving it, not that it's being moved for me.
She implies that such behavior as inviting people to look at a sunset, giving people her name, or putting on clothing is something superficial and even silly, and something she only does because not to do so makes other people uncomfortable. She describes being in the height of ecstasy when she realizes she's been sitting for two hours without one single thought. I get the impression of a person so caught up in the spiritual world that she completely forgets about physical necessities, the sort of person who needs to be reminded to bathe, and dress, and who can't be trusted not to give away all of her money and credit cards to people on the streets; the sort of person who would've been one of those medieval saints who lived in caves and relied on donations of food from the local villagers.
But, I don't think the real Byron Katie is like that. When I've watched her in action on her website, she comes across as occasionally gently sarcastic, she obviously has pretty strong opionions, and judging from her well kept hairstyle, clothing and jewelry, she hasn't completely given up on the finer things of life and moved to the sort of ascetic lifestyle that her self-described mental state would seem to automatically create. That's fine. I believe she should enjoy the fruits of her labors. It's just seems to contradict her self-professed mental state. Maybe it's part of the "show" that she's had to learn to put on after her transformation into whatever she is now. I suppose people in modern society would be less likely to listen to a spiritual leader with matted, unkempt hair and tattered clothing.
My mindset is to accept what works for me, and hold the rest in a state of "I don't know." Byron Katie's "work" really has made a dramatic difference in the way I'm living my life; and even though a lot of what she says appears crazy to me, I also know that she's operating from a completely different viewpoint. I also know that, if what she writes is the truth, she would completely agree with me that she's insane, or wonderful, or evil, or enlightened, or completely lost, thereby allowing me to make my own conclusions and develop my own growth.

I know "the work" works because it's making my life better. As far as the rest of her philosophy, well, I guess if it's true I'll evetually come to realize the truth. If it's not, I'll forget it, and continue with what works for me as I continue to seek truth and health. The Seeker's Guide (previously published as The New American Spirituality) ReviewI have been to many "new age" workshops and have read tons of the books available on self-help and spirtuality. Some of it was great, but often I felt as if something was missing. I wondered what relevance the spirtual journey had to my psycholigical growth and I worried that my concerns with psychology were too self-absorbing. Lesser captures the essence of this tension in her book. She looks at how the spiritual and psychological path can intersect in a way that anyone can understand - and she does it so well that I found myself actually saying "ah ha!" as I read along. She also speaks in a frank, candid way about the "new age" movement, and that is really refreshing. It sounds like she has met absolutely everybody in the field and talks about them all as human beings instead of big stars. What a relief!
I also really liked her own story, because it made me see how much we are all seekers on a path. The way she talks about her ups and downs makes the rest of what she says seem even more real. You can tell that she has a great feeling for anyone who is out there trying to figure things out in their own way. It was encouraging. She wrote one part about a poem she and her husband return to whenever they have to make a dificult decision because it has a message that they learn from again and again. I was really struck by the simplicity of doing that and I thought, "wow, I could do that!" There were a bunch of those stories -she talked about things she did to keep herself on track that were simple, but took some thought, and reading them inspired me.
I guess that is really the bottom line. If anyone is on a path or thinking about learning more about different ways of exploring spirituality and self growth, this book is a real inspiration. It is also packed with a lot of information, as she quotes so many other teachers and writes about a lot of different traditions. I was impressed by how much she packed into it.
She also writes about the Omega, which I had never heard of. It sounds like a fasinating place so I was glad to find out about it.
Bottom line is, I recommend it - especially if you are one of those people who is yearning for some kind of spiritual connection or a more peaceful place inside yourself and you just don't know where to get started. It was really good.
I noticed I was the only one in the review area - anybody else out there read it?The Seeker's Guide (previously published as The New American Spirituality) Overview

Embracing The Now: Finding Peace And Happiness In What Is ReviewGina's written a powerfully clear book about living from presence (as Eckhart Tolle calls it) or essence as she does. The formidable opponent on such a path is of course ego. But ego is not to be resisted or fought against or repressed or denied. Instead, Gina explains how to accept the ego as it arises while still seeing through its various tricks for pulling one out of presence. She details the various emotions, judgments, fears, denials and mind games that are common tools of the ego in clear and easy-to-understand language. I find Gina's books to be as helpful as Eckhart's in the journey to living from presence. With this book in particular, I had an `aha moment' as Oprah calls them around my emotions. Although I had learned not to give attention to the stories and dramas of my mind, I was still paying untold amount of attention to my emotions. I felt them to be somewhat closer to truth because they seemed so intuitive and natural. I know realize that they are simply thoughts translated into bodily sensations and deserve no more analysis or attention than the mind. Of course, essence uses emotions such as joy or love or peace or acceptance and even sadness to guide us towards fulfilling our life plan with the eventual goal of awakening. It does not, however, use grief, depression, anger, jealousy or other such negative emotions.
Gina outlines the ego's mechanisms so clearly that it becomes difficult not to recognize, accept and thus heal them in oneself. All of this is in the service of greater peace, greater joy, and eventual liberation. The messages may be conceptually simple but in an ego and mind-dominated time and society, they are easy to forget. I enjoy reading Gina's words to remind me of what I know in my own heart to be the shining truth.Embracing The Now: Finding Peace And Happiness In What Is Overview

A Modern Quest For Eternal Truth ReviewSharon Kumuda Janis's Memoir is an incredible journey into an incredible mind; hers. From the time of her very early childhood Kumuda displayed remarkable brilliance, compassion, and wisdom. Anyone on a spiritual path who has spent time or is thinking of spending time in an ashram, Dharma center, or is otherwise a part of a spiritual community should read this book and have the mirror of truth held up to themselves. Kumuda's journey is the archetypal one. The heroine's journey. The depth of her love, devotion, integrity and passion for truth are woven throughout the pages of this heartfelt narrative. Shedding light on the purpose and role of the Guru, Kumuda returns again and again to personal responsibility in that relationship to the Guru, and a call that we check to see if our moment to moment behavior accords with the wisdom of the ages. Are we giving hope to the hopeless as we practice our chosen paths? Are we serving as inspiring examples of committed practitioners seeking to embody the ideals of the wisdom traditions? Or are we reverting to Monstrous Spiritual Ego in pathologized relationships to the Divine, making narcissistic appeals to get what we want? Are we using our relationship with the Divine as an excuse to make more demands and judgments of others and less of ourselves? Amazing book. I will read it again soon.A Modern Quest For Eternal Truth Overview

A Workbook Companion, Vol. II: Commentaries on the Workbook for Students from A Course in Miracles, Lessons 181-365 ReviewIf you're studying A Course in Miracles, buy this book and its companion volume. Skip lunches, go without your Starbucks fixes, whatever it takes, and spend that money here. You'll thank yourself--and the authors--many times over.
Following the Course is a beautiful walk, but it's not an especially well-marked path. It's easy to find yourself in the middle of either a vacant lot or a scary junkyard while thinking you're still on the trail. If you find either of those, you are not listening to your Guide. The landscape is littered with the remains of those who've gone before and fell off along the way.
The Workbook is a deeply rewarding and expanding part of the mind training offered by the Course, but here again, it's just not that easy to "get it." This pair of books will give you left and right hand borders for the Path of ACIM. Walking a well-marked trail is not only clearer, it's more enjoyable. Even if you could do it alone, why would you want to?
Robert Perry's Practice Instruction is very helpful. He has a keen sense of what the Author is really asking us to do, and thus can lead us toward carrying that out more easily and faithfully. Certainly there is a relationship between what we put into a thing and what we get out of it.
Allen Watson's Lesson Commentaries are full of insight and practical wisdom. The value they add to our study is a multiple of any expenditure of our time or money invested in acquiring them.
Both of these men are true scholars of the Course and can be trusted to help its Author bring out the most for you. Plus they're both good writers, which makes them a pleasure to read and an inspiration to follow.
My experience with Circle Publishing's books has been overwhelmingly positive. Their material is well written and easily understood. And it doesn't hurt that their volumes are aesthetically pleasing, both to the eye and the hand. As a final note, be aware that their website holds a wealth of resources.
Peace to you.A Workbook Companion, Vol. II: Commentaries on the Workbook for Students from A Course in Miracles, Lessons 181-365 Overview

What About Now: Reminders for Being in the Moment ReviewI found this book by chance searching for books on DBT. Part of DBT is mindfullness-being in the moment. This book is perfect. I bookmarked on my new Kindle about 20 that are relevant for me on a regular basis. I love that they are short (1 Page) excerpts from her other books that can be read in a short period of time, hence almost used as a daily guide. Plan to look into her other books. If you want to quiet the brain and it's negative chatter- then this book is a good place to start. What About Now: Reminders for Being in the Moment Overview

Loving What Is: Four Questions That Can Change Your Life Reviewthis would be it. I'm an ordained Christian minister, and I'd give out *this* book before the Bible itself. That's how powerful her simple approach IS. It is literally the key to end all suffering. Sounds too good to be true? It isn't. I have been a student of psychology, personality and spirituality ever since I was a young girl. I studied theology in college, minored in psychology, have dozens of self-help and self-discovery books on my shelves, been a student of cognitive psychology and Toltec Wisdom (ala "The Toltec Way" by Gregg and "The Four Agreements" by Ruiz)...
From these, I came to believe that my own thoughts create my own suffering. It's never the person or situation that causes me grief; it's the story I *tell* myself *about* the person or situation that is the problem! Yet, although I knew this intellectually, I had a hard time dismantling all my core beliefs and judgments. My intellect likes mind candy and the accumulating of knowledge, but it wasn't enough to put me over the edge to freedom.
But this book did. It is all the above disciplines combined, but MUCH more. I was having anxiety attacks and an irrational fear of death and dying; this book helped snap me out of it immediately (along with the grace of God). Loving What Is is not by a counselor or some New Age guru; it's by a normal woman who was on the floor of a half way house, feeling bitter and angry, who had an epiphany when she asked herself a series of 4 simple questions. Her depression lifted, and she was a new woman in ONE instant. Since then (1986) she has shared her message, and it's changed thousands of lives.
To see what The Work is about, visit her website at http://thework.com This book is a life changer. The information it contains can replace all self-help books...it's that transformational. It's also an easy read, and very engaging. After all, she's just a "normal" woman like you and I who stumbled on 4 basic questions called Inquiry that will change your life forever.
If you are looking for answers to "why", are tired of feeling tired, angry, depressed, alone, cheated, sad, or confused, please get this book today.

Sacred Visitations: Gifts of Grace That Transform the Heart and Awaken the Soul ReviewGrowing up I always wanted to know that there was more than just what I could see, hear, and touch in this life. Not just know it intellectually, but experience it for myself. That's why I like this book. It's is full of real, everyday experiences of grace in one person's life. Through this author's eyes I could see that grace, while mysterious is always showing up and that I can find it in even the most seemingly mundane moments.
When I found out there was also an Audio Course available I got that too. Hearing Ceci Miller's voice brought the material and the author to life for me.
For anyone who wants to explore their own transformation, inspiration and inner wisdom this book will prove a spectacular support.Sacred Visitations: Gifts of Grace That Transform the Heart and Awaken the Soul Overview
