Theory U: Leading from the Future as It Emerges ReviewI received the book a few days ago. I have ben reading for hours and hours, with just a few necessary breaks for digesting, reflecting, accepting and bringing my own thoughts together. This is one of the few books that is not just interesting when it comes to theory and methods. What makes it special is the mixture of theories and the authors own thoughts, experiences and break through thinking.
It has ben hard to lay the book aside, because it is so intense. And I know this is a book that I will read over and over again - with longer breaks under way - in order to have time for my own thinking. Soon it is time for summer vacation - then I will have lots of time to read the book again - at a lower pace - with the time to let my thougts wander. This is the kind of book that easily trap ones mind up to its own thinking.
To be more precise, what I found so interesting about this book:
- The Blind Spot - our unability to see our own weaknesses, what we do not understand and what we hide from.
- And, what is even more interesting: How to illuminate thr Blind Spot and make it clear to us how it stands in our way of dealing with life in a constructive way. We all have these Blind Spots - and we are unaware about them. Otto Scharmers openness in reveling his own Blind Spots through true life anecdotes made me see some of my own Blind Spots and gave me the will, the commitment and the power to face them. Facing them and seeing how they stand in the way of my True Self gave me the Willpower and Leverage to Confront them without hesitation or fear.
- Behind the Blind Spot lies possibilites to understand what we may be - what kind of a future we can create - in our Full Potential. Otto Scharmer calls this Presencing, which is a good descrption for the process the book led me into.
If you are working with development of organsizations, employees or leaders this book gives you the understanding of the limited outcomes of "Downloading" - which is the most common way of teaching - and what you get out of bringing people through experiences of opening, mind, heart and start to presence the possible future.
This book will probably be a milestone for understanding more of how teaching, laerning happens and that there is more to working with of people, organizations and social systems than we have understood so far.Theory U: Leading from the Future as It Emerges Overview

Embracing The Now: Finding Peace And Happiness In What Is ReviewGina's written a powerfully clear book about living from presence (as Eckhart Tolle calls it) or essence as she does. The formidable opponent on such a path is of course ego. But ego is not to be resisted or fought against or repressed or denied. Instead, Gina explains how to accept the ego as it arises while still seeing through its various tricks for pulling one out of presence. She details the various emotions, judgments, fears, denials and mind games that are common tools of the ego in clear and easy-to-understand language. I find Gina's books to be as helpful as Eckhart's in the journey to living from presence. With this book in particular, I had an `aha moment' as Oprah calls them around my emotions. Although I had learned not to give attention to the stories and dramas of my mind, I was still paying untold amount of attention to my emotions. I felt them to be somewhat closer to truth because they seemed so intuitive and natural. I know realize that they are simply thoughts translated into bodily sensations and deserve no more analysis or attention than the mind. Of course, essence uses emotions such as joy or love or peace or acceptance and even sadness to guide us towards fulfilling our life plan with the eventual goal of awakening. It does not, however, use grief, depression, anger, jealousy or other such negative emotions.
Gina outlines the ego's mechanisms so clearly that it becomes difficult not to recognize, accept and thus heal them in oneself. All of this is in the service of greater peace, greater joy, and eventual liberation. The messages may be conceptually simple but in an ego and mind-dominated time and society, they are easy to forget. I enjoy reading Gina's words to remind me of what I know in my own heart to be the shining truth.Embracing The Now: Finding Peace And Happiness In What Is Overview

Soul Mission, Life Vision: Recognize Your True Gifts and Make Your Mark in the World ReviewThis book is good enough to get me to write a review - the first I've ever done that. I've read many books whose objective is to help you find your true calling. This one hits the mark and goes much deeper than the others. It has excellent guided meditations and exercises that get right to the heart of the matter (how to find freedom and personal power) and help you tune in to your internal wisdom. The book is openly spiritual in a way that invites and honors all beliefs, and it is also very practical (it asks you to look at your checkbook and calendar to assess your priorities!). I was one of those who lived with a "mission of the moment" and put off clarifying my life purpose. In this book I found help with my resistance and the process has flowed easily. Alan Seale is a fine writer and an insightful guide to have on your side.Soul Mission, Life Vision: Recognize Your True Gifts and Make Your Mark in the World Overview

Contemplative Youth Ministry: Practicing the Presence of Jesus (Youth Specialties) ReviewContemplative youth ministry is a welcomed book. It's a book that seeks to put God at the centre of youth ministry instead of programs that stem from good ideas. The title of the book sums up the theme and direction of the book. Basically if Brother Lawrence had done youth ministry, he probably would have written a book like this. He instructs youth leaders on how to listen to God, how to minister from a place of silence and hearing God's voice, and how to encourage these activities among the youth.
One of the strengths of the book would be his testimony at the beginning of the book in which he describes himself as being program driven and success seeking. He then recounts his transformation to a place where he ministers out of love instead of anxiety. I felt that I could relate.
The part that I got the most from was when he called us to be "fully present" to the individual youths. He made me realise how often I've only given someone half of my attention. His challenge to me to slow down and give a youth my full attention and listening ears is much appreciated.
I felt the book had a couple of weaknesses that made me give this otherwise unique book only three stars. First of all, he fails to ground his (what are for many) new and somewhat radical ideas in scripture. With the exception of the odd verse, he bases his ideas more in church history than in scripture. Not to say that I think that his ideas are unbiblical; for at least the most part they are not. But, when calling the church to fundamentally change how we do things, we want a surer guide then a few testimonies and a "this is how Ignatius Loyola would have done it". Often I thought that he had a good idea which made me think of different texts of scripture, but he failed to ever interact with them. I felt that this decreased the potential power of the book.
The second weakness I felt the book had was the somewhat negative tone towards preaching or what he called "word heavy youth ministry". Preaching is very uncool in today's post-modern era where authority is downplayed. There is a general shift away from preaching and teaching and I feel like this book is affected by that wave of thinking. The author encouraged the exercise of meditating on scripture together and then sharing what each person felt that the text was saying. What the author failed to teach us was what to do when some outlandish, nut-job or even heretical ideas are being shared. How do we bring correction and instruction into a moment like that? Is there really no value at all in having a gifted teacher authoritatively say, "here is the text, let me explain what it means and how to apply it to your lives"? The gospel needs to be preached and not just reflected in the way we live.
Also, the author never uses the term "prophetic", but what he describes in some areas could be termed "prophetic youth ministry". Hearing what God is saying and acting on it is a prophetic action. Though this is unfortunately terribly under lived among us, I felt a desire to say during the book, "There are other types of prayer we can engage in to make effective youth ministry. What about the "loud crying and tears", what about the intercession? We need to do more than just listen to what God is doing; we also need to pray things into being."
