Nothing Special ReviewI am a buddhist.I have read a single talk out of this book every night for over a year. These are concise dharma talks. Zen is pretty new to the US, and many of the traditional Zen stories have to do with monks having exotic experiences. It is easy to get caught in these dreams of 13th century Japan. Joko brings us back from our dreams of a far away practice to doing our dishes while the kids yell in our house in Denver. She offers a sober message of being just here. You wont find a heartwarming Hallmark message here. Joko is as direct and harsh as reality. It is no fun to follow the teachings back to our drab old smelly life, so don't look for the book to be a fun escape. It is the opposite -- which is why it is so good.
The book is comprised of a series of talks from Joko and some questions from her students. Joko is an American and so the message couched in the familiar language of our culture. IT is not like reading Dogen, and is more accessible. I would recommend this work to anyone who is serious about---well words escape me. It is not quie accurate to say that it is for those who are serious about taking the Zen path. But for anyone who wants to learn to be present with their real life, this offers solid guidance as much as words can.Nothing Special Overview

The Companion to the Book of Common Worship ReviewStudents of (and pastors within) the Reformed tradition will find this a terrific resource for thinking about how to use the Book of Common Worship. As anyone who has ever planned a service knows all too well, it's never as simple as "turn to page 36 and start reading." Even the most "by the book" event requires a lot of decisions on the part of the pastor -- things that the congregation never thinks about, such as when to raise your hands and what gestures to make during Communion. That is, people may not think about them consciously, and yet, they'll know something is missing or incorrect when the pastor simply omits those gestures...or freestyles them. And the service will lose something important, if intangible. Other Christian denominations, from the "liturgical traditions" have many resources explaining what, how and why, and they are all wonderful in their own way. Unfortunately, these are only somewhat helpful for those of us in other branches of Christianity...there are some things we just do differently. And yet, aside from the "Directory for Worship" of the PCUSA and the RCA, for example, there isn't much guidance. That is why this book is so important. It is well-written, very practical, theologically grounded, and Reformed with a capital R. A great resource. The Companion to the Book of Common Worship Overview

Jon Courson's Application Commentary: New Testament ReviewJon Courson combines scholarly analysis with a broad and deep knowledge of Old Testament Types and Symbolism to breathe a new vitality into the New Testament Good News. The common theme is the Gospel of Grace, whereby Christians respond to Jesus' sacrificial love on the cross by inviting Him into their hearts and letting Him finish the work by changing them from the inside out. His self-deprecating and personal style is not only humorous and readable but also timely and pertinent to the struggles we face in our lives. I highly recommend this commentary for those Christians who are striving for maturity in their Christian walk.Jon Courson's Application Commentary: New Testament Overview

12 Choices... That Lead to Your Success ReviewI bought 12 Choices for my work -- and additional copies for my coworkers to use...but what I found was information that was useful to my spouse, my kids, my parents and my Sunday School class.
Mr. Cottrell has captured and condensed the most important and the most impactful choices we make throughout our lives. By providing an infrastructure so we can classify our choices, we understand their value and the importance of making the right choices.
After reading this book, I took it home to family and then shared it with friends. We all took away something a little bit different but it was all helpful...and it was written in a way so that even my teenager got the message about the types of choices we make and how to do a better job of choosing the right road.
This little book is worth its weight in gold and is right up there with Stephen Covey's Seven Habits book.12 Choices... That Lead to Your Success Overview

Hurt: Inside the World of Today's Teenagers (Youth, Family, and Culture) ReviewMy roommate was given this book a few months back. Since I work with the Jr. High group at church, I figured I might find it helpful, so picked it up. What I found was a thought provoking book on today's youth sub-culture.
The book focuses most on high school students or mid-adolescents as the author calls them. His premise is that adults have started abandoning kids early in life, making the transition from childhood to adulthood a longer and harder process. Teens draw away from adults, not as much out of rebellion, but to cope. The majority of this book is devoted to various aspects of teen life and how it develops and plays out. Chapters such as Peers, School, Family, and Sports hit the nail on the head. And I'll confess I found some shocking stuff in the chapters on Sex, Ethics, and the Party Scene.
I did have some problems with this book. At times, it seemed to go too far into the self-esteem trap. Yes, we need to care for kids, but we also need to acknowledge that not everyone is created equal, something that seemed to be over looked at times. Still, most his examples were of things going too far in the other direction, which makes his points very valid.
Another area was the various ethics discussions. While many of these chapters were eye opening for me, he never addressed ways to teach morals. In fact, he seems to blame adults for problems such as cheating but never blames the kids or discuss how the problem should be addressed.
The last two chapters are a discussion of ways to solve the problem of abandonment, but they seem to be impractical and fall short. City wide meetings for everyone involved with youth? What we really need is a radical shift in our entire culture. Not that I'm exactly sure how to go about doing that, either. So I'm probably little better then he is.
On the whole, this book is an eye-opener about the problems today's high schoolers face. While not perfect, it should be read by anyone who cares about today's teens. Maybe then we can come up with workable solutions to let them know we do care.Hurt: Inside the World of Today's Teenagers (Youth, Family, and Culture) Overview

In Parables: The Challenge of the Historical Jesus (Eagle Books) ReviewJohn Dominic Crossan stands in my mind as one of the most lucid, honest, and forthright biblical scholar of our day. His many publications testify to his integrity and extensive scholarship. I did not read this book when it was first publishd in 1973, but have had the good fortune of having a good friend, the retired rector of an Episcopal church, donate me this book. Since I have read most of the lastest publications of Crossan, I find in this one the same sound interpretation of the parables of Jesus. This is not only a commentary, but a scholarly introduction to the literary genre that the historical Jesus employed to convey the core of his message, which is so often completely misunderstood. I recommend this book very highly to anyone who shares the new understanding of the historical Jesus, so well explored by the Westar Institute. In Parables: The Challenge of the Historical Jesus (Eagle Books) Overview

Getting to 'I Do' ReviewA friend of mine is always encouraging me to go for what "cooks me". Well this book cooked me.
First off, I am a guy and this book is definitely written to the female audience. So I had to keep transposing and interpreting as I went along. As I read it I found that I was having all kinds of reactions ranging from HECK NO! to DARN RIGHT!
One of my first reactions was to a subheading in the first chapter DO YOU WANT IT ALL, OR ARE YOU WILLING TO COMPROMIXE TO GET HIM? that really pushed my buttons because one of the issues that I am working on in my life is not settling.
What kept me going through the book were the examples and how many were true for my life. One of the best insights in the book for me was that rejecting someone can be an act of love. The author advocates either accepting or rejecting someone, both are acts of love. What is not an act of love is to tolerate someone.
I think that many of my concerns with the book could have been alleviated if the material in the chapter FOR THE REST OF OUR LIVES, which is at the end of the book, would have been placed at the beginning. For me, it sets the context in which the rest of the book is written rather than being a summary. It directly addresses many of the concerns that I had as I read the rest of the book.
There is much of value in here, and even though it is written for women and I don't agree with everything in the book, I'd recommend it to anyone interested in improving relationships in their life simply because it is so thought-provoking.Getting to 'I Do' Overview

The Innovation Secrets of Steve Jobs: Insanely Different Principles for Breakthrough Success ReviewCross-Posted from my blog - Innovate on Purpose
I have the good fortune to read books on innovation subjects just before they are released. It is actually a lot more interesting than that might sound. On the whole, there is a lot of good stuff being written about innovation - the real question is, will anyone take the time to read all that's out there?Today I am reviewing a book called The Innovation Secrets of Steve Jobs by Carmine Gallo. Gallo wrote a well-received book a few years ago entitled The Presentation Secrets of Steve Jobs, and felt a book on Jobs and Innovation was in order. Anyone who has paid any attention lately knows that Apple is held up as a leading innovator, and rightly so, and most people place the locus of that success squarely on Jobs' head, which I also agree with. If Jobs is driving a wave of innovation at Apple, it would make sense to understand what makes him tick, and what we could learn from that.First, let me get off my chest the annoyance with the focus on "secrets". As I've written before, there really aren't any secrets where innovation is concerned, and if you've paid any attention to the media you'll know much that Gallo is writing about. The sooner we end the mythos that pervades the innovation space the better. Now that that's off my chest we can proceed with the review. Gallo has done an excellent job rounding up a significant number of people who were present at the beginning of a number of Apple's innovations. He had to use this method to suss out Jobs' strategy, since Jobs doesn't like to talk about it directly to the media. Jobs prefers to announce grand strategies and use the media to reinforce Apple's image as an innovator and a leader, but he doesn't appear too ready to talk directly about the innovation programs or visions. Gallo has done a good job piecing together some of the strategies and insights by talking to a wide range of people who were with Apple during the resurgence.Gallo argues that there are seven principles that will help you innovate like Jobs:
1. Do what you love
2. Put a dent in the universe - have a big vision
3. Kick-start your brain - use creativity and have lots of different experiences
4. Sell dreams not products - understand what people want to accomplish
5. Say no to 1000 things
6. Create insanely great experiences
7. Master the message
In these points Gallo identifies what makes Jobs, and by extension Apple, a good innovator. Apple is focusing tightly on important and relevant products and experience that impact how we live, especially how we gain and interact with new media and social media. Apple under Jobs has always had an outsized vision of itself and its mission - remember the 1984 commercial? A big vision, tied to excellent strategic insight and the ability to accurately predict trends in the marketplace have put Apple in an excellent position. But Apple has also been fairly ruthless in its focus. Since Jobs rejoined Apple the number of products Apple offers has actually fallen rather dramatically. Apple places a lot of emphasis on one or two disruptive products a year, and people eagerly await Jobs' next announcement (master the message). Jobs understands probably better than most what it means to offer a "whole product" (the MP-3 player AND iTunes) and masters the messaging better than any of his competitors. Apple doesn't just create a new technology - in fact they are technology laggards - they create a product that works and provide an excellent experience that seems cool. Sony, Dell, Samsung and H-P must cringe everytime Apple steals a march on them, because Apple has a constancy of vision and the ability to deliver experience in a package that none of these other firms have yet been able to match. All the Jobs stories are here - how he dropped in at Reed College in calligraphy, his time in an ashram, the early glory days, the days in the Wilderness, his return to Apple. All of them seem to have had an effect on Jobs as a thinker and innovator, according to the book. Somehow I doubt that conclusion. While Jobs is the summation of his experiences, he was always an iconoclast, zigging where others zagged. His experiences may have shaped his thinking, but the kernal of what he is was there all along. You can't innovate like Jobs because he is Jobs and you aren't, but that's OK. We only need a few Jobs' to set a standard. You can learn a lot about Jobs and his different perspectives, and begin to apply these ideas in places that are far different from Apple. However, you can't simply change a culture of any firm to align it to Apple's thinking, or Google's structures, overnight, and it would be difficult and distracting. What you can do is identify the iconoclasts within your firm and begin to encourage them to think different. Therein lies the genesis of innovation success. Demonstrating that people with unique insights who want to create great change can work within a large, staid organization successfully, rather than having to create a completely new company. This is a good book, well organized and well written that reminds and reinforces our image and knowledge of Jobs. At the end I am left with the fact that some people are so unique and different that we can't hope to copy them, but even pale imitations may take us a long way. The real question is how many people have the courage to try.The Innovation Secrets of Steve Jobs: Insanely Different Principles for Breakthrough Success Overview

The Custodians: Beyond Abduction ReviewHaving read numerous books on the subject of alien abductions over the last fifteen years or so, I eventually discovered that the information contained in the different books came together like a vast puzzle. Several years ago, I read an amazing book by Ray Fowler called "The Watchers". In that book the aliens tell Mr. Fowler's subject that more and more information about themselves will be revealed as time passes and people become more "prepared" to accept their (the aliens) existence.
Indeed, in the time that has passed since that book's release, the so-called "greys" have become a part of our pop-culture. Millions of dollars worth of merchandise has been sold over the last few years depicting the aliens with the unforgettable large, black eyes; everything from stuffed dolls to skateboards. As our culture has come to embrace these beings without quite realizing it, these aliens have indeed revealed their motives through subjects working with investigators such as Budd Hopkins, Dr. Mack, and the author of "The Custodians", Dolores Cannon.
What makes "The Custodians" so breathtaking is the fact that Ms. Cannon actually speaks directly to various alien beings, using her subjects as transmitters. Dolores Cannon immediately becomes a very endearing woman to the reader, as she conducts her work in a completely non-exploitative way. Her first and foremost concern in every one of her cases is for her subject, and I must admit that she is the most caring investigator I have studied in that respect. I believe that if most investigators were given the opportunity to speak directly with these mysterious aliens and ask them any question they wished, they would be so excited and amazed that they would neglect the well-being of their subject. Ms. Cannon's deep sensitivity is apparently why these aliens have chosen her to receive this information, and throughout the book it becomes obvious that she is the perfect choice.
"The Custodians" ranks as the most important book to date on the alien abduction phenomenon since Whitley Strieber's "Communion". This, however, does not mean that a complete skeptic could pick up this book and become an instant believer. This is not a book intended to make people realize we are not alone, but is instead geared toward explaining who our universal "neighbors" are and what their true intentions are toward us. I believe that in order for the information in this book to be understood the reader must have previously accepted the fact that these aliens do indeed exist, which may require reading an earlier book on the subject. I write this knowingly as I clearly remember seeing Whitley Strieber on a national morning show promoting "Communion" and laughing openly at what he was saying, not believing a word of it. Of course, that book fatefully made it's way into my hands and changed my beliefs forever. If I had never read that book I fear that I would have remained a closed-minded disbeliever.
To anyone who has followed this amazing phenomenon, "The Custodians" is truly a must read. The number of questions answered in this book is amazing and many of the mysteries about who these beings are and what they are doing here are finally solved. Dolores Cannon is truly amazing in her work, and it seems as if more is yet to come. Truly unforgettable. The Custodians: Beyond Abduction Overview

Leading from the Inside Out: The Art of Self-Leadership ReviewI like leadership books, and I was fully expecting to enjoy this one. Though I didn't find it to be particularly problematic or irritating, it was decidedly unremarkable. I don't think that Rima offered many, if any, new ideas that haven't already been addressed more thoroughly or more compellingly in other leadership books.
The main idea of the book is that leaders (and this book is really written to pastors, though the author pretends that its audience is more diverse) need to take care of their own character and personal junk before trying to lead an organization like the church. He offers a handful of examples of fallen leaders to point out that those who are not conscientious to get their own lives in order are prone to very public and destructive falls from leadership prominence, no matter how strong their leadership capacity might otherwise be. This primary premise is solid and hard to refute.
After making the case for self-leadership and describing a rather contrived, if potentially helpful, process for defining some personal values and goals into what he calls a personal constitution, Rima spends the second half of the book explaining the specific areas where leaders need to proactively pursue self-leadership: spiritual, physical, emotional, and intellectual venues. Again, there is nothing controversial or particularly groundbreaking about any of these categories. Rima is right to suggest that leaders need to attend to these areas of their lives. The problem is that he offers nothing new or particularly challenging.
Where Rima is most helpful is when he gets more specific. For instance, in his call to life-long learning, he describes the value that he gains from reading biographies of all sorts of people. Though I have often heard leadership gurus lay out the challenge that leaders need to be readers, I've not heard someone so specifically explicate the potential value of the genre of biography, which I rarely, if ever, read. I am intrigued to consider which biographies I might like to investigate over the next year or so.
I also appreciated his willingness to do a little soap-box sermonizing, especially regarding the stupor that television has beset upon the modern evangelical community. Church leaders would do well to consider the challenge that Rima offers to seriously curtail the amount of television that we invest as an all-too-normal part of American life.
Less helpful was his near-obsession with physical appearance, which bordered on some form of vanity. Though he promotes physical well-being in a way that causes overweight folks like myself to ponder, I think he goes a bit overboard. He slams the church for using food as an instrument of celebration, but any understanding of sociology and even biblical accounts suggests that food is and always has been a completely natural and even holy part of Christian celebration. Heaven is described as a feast with its obvious analogy of consuming good food, so to suggest that the church would be better off to celebrate God's work while avoiding food seems to point us away from one of the best gifts that God has given us. Though food, like all good things, can become an idol or an addiction, it is no healthy corrective measure to suggest its complete avoidance within church practices.
Overall, this book is fine, if largely benign. There is little that is particularly helpful and nothing that seems especially detrimental. For a better leadership book for church leaders, read Bill Hybels' "Courageous Leadership."

Soul Moments: Marvelous Stories of Synchronicity--Meaningful Coincidences from a Seemingly Random World ReviewSoul Moments: Marvelous Stories of Synchronicity -- Meaningful Coincidences from a Seemingly Random World, Conari Press (Reviewed by Carroll Straus) I may perhaps be biased, as my story is in this book. But the deep sense of peace I came away with after reading Soul Moments came from two sources. First, the realization that at both ends of the process of finding myself in the pages of such a book, meaningful "coincidences" pointed me in a direction that has given my life deep meaning, and second, after reading, it, I knew with absolute certainty that the "coincidences" are real, and that I am not alone in experiencing them. The forward to this book was written by Robert Johnson, whose gift for clarity in the otherwise esoteric realm of Jungian writing knows no equal. He writes that Jung thought that "synchronicity" -- apparently opportune "coincidences" that seem deeply meaningful and perhaps signs of grace -- should be taken as seriously as dreams in individuation; the "unfolding of the unique life of the soul." Of course, mainstream thought has not yet arrived here. This beautiful, thoughtful volume may do much to help change that. Among the contributors to this collection are Mark Watts, son of the late Alan Watts, so evocative of the sixties; Roberto Takoaka, a dermatologists in Brazil; Trish Sanders, a dancer in San Francisco's Bay Area; Madiline Nold, a psychotherapist from Brookline, Mass; Nick Carrington, a disc jockey in England, and Dr. Larrey Dossey, a leader in the field of spiritually based mind-body medicine -- among others. Oh -- and yours truly, a lawyer in Mission Viejo, California. Each of us, a square in a patchwork quilt whose pattern we could not see, seemed to tell our stories with the same delicacy, the same sense that not many would accept, uncritically, the numinous realities we had each experienced. But what is clear from the pattern which emerges is that these are not isolated events -- not in any way.Reading this collection, one never needs to feel isolated again, and I surely do not. I can only hope everyone else who bravely tendered such a moment from their lives received as exquisite a gift as I did. The writing and submitting of this story made me one cherished new friend, pointed me toward healing as a way to practice law, and gave me heart to believe this vision can and will come to pass. Anyone who reads this book will, I am sure, come away with the same comfort I did. Those who recognize this grace in their own lives are invited, on the final page, to join in the journey by sending their stories to Phil. I invite you, too. Soul Moments is an exquisitely crafted gossamer web -- of all of our lives.Soul Moments: Marvelous Stories of Synchronicity--Meaningful Coincidences from a Seemingly Random World Overview

Boundaries in Marriage Workbook ReviewI thought the workbook was excellent and very useful. Normally I don't bother with workbooks, but the workbook brought up good things to discuss while reading the book. By creating oppritunities to talk about what the book said, it really formed a practical way to implement and apply what we were learing about in the book. Some of the tests in the book were also pretty fun and gave us a chance to see things from a different perspective and to laugh at ourselves. Overall very well done and worth the investment. It really does make the book.Boundaries in Marriage Workbook Overview

Bible Doctrine ReviewThis condensed version of Grudem's Systemtic Theology, edited by Jeff Purswell, is an excellent resource for any library. Most pastors and teachers will probably stick with the larger volume, but for laypeople, this edition is hard to beat.
I have used this book in teaching Sunday School, and have been fairly impressed with the editorial decisions made. The book is accessible and yet meaty. Added are review questions and a very helpful glossary. Highly recommended!Bible Doctrine Overview

Your First Year in Network Marketing: Overcome Your Fears, Experience Success, and Achieve Your Dreams ReviewI have been in network marketing for over ten years, failing miserably. I tried this company and that company. Wasn't going anywhere untill I bought this book and used it.
This book should be called "How To Become Brilliant on the basics" and subtitled "How To Unleash Your Potential in MLM." It sure did for me.
Before reading "Your First Year in Network Marketing", I thought I would be lucky to get 100 people on my list. After reading what Mark said, I easily came up with a list of over 2,000 and the bst part is that those 2,000 know 2,000 who know 2,000 who know 2,000 and so on. I think it is true that if you know three people, you know everybodyelse in the world.
The affirmations were great and got me thinking bigger. The scripts were a great start, although I have midified them since then.
Overall a great book by Mark. I wonder how many other failed network marketers would do well if only they read (and applied) this wisdom?

Gaia's Gift: Earth, Ourselves and God after Copernicus Review"Gaia's Gift" brings together many threads of modern knowledge and great issues of concern such as threats to earth integrity and unjustice between nations and individuals. These are placed in the context of a critical history of religion, especially the Judeo-Christian tradition. The organization and prose make these potentially difficult and complex analyses relatively easy to follow and remember.
As I am a scientist with no formal training in Theology or church history, Primavesi's books have helped me to understand why the scientific findings that are so compelling to me are rejected by a large proportion of society. Furthermore, why I should be concerned to increase social consciousness of the impact of religion on civil and social practice.
On the other hand, many of my scientist friends dismiss all religious belief and practice with scorn. "Gaia's Gift" would help them to understand that impulses of awe, joy, and thankfulness are fully appropriate as we accept our gift of life that has been prepared by earth and the web of life throughout deep time and in the present.Gaia's Gift: Earth, Ourselves and God after Copernicus Overview

The Making of a Leader: Recognizing the Lessons and Stages of Leadership Development ReviewFor 10 years I've used The Making of A Leader in my work developing leaders. First, the book has been instrumental in my own personal and leadership development. Second, I use the content in workshops and classes all over the world. The principles hold up well in a variety of cultural contexts. And never before have these principles and practices been more relevant than today!
In The Making of Leader, Dr. J. Robert Clinton documents his research of hundreds of leaders. Clinton discovered a generalized time-line consisting of six phases that represent the general flow of a leader's life. Development phases represent major segments of a leader's development. The six phases are:
1. Sovereign Foundations
2. Inner-life Growth
3. Ministry Maturing
4. Life Maturing
5. Convergence
6. Afterglow
Identifying phases gives a leader capacity to track progress in their development, and clarify insights and lessons. Armed with these patterns a leader has the ability to actually identify and develop leadership, character, vision, values, and relational skills. This is what separates Dr. Clinton's book from the rest of the leadership genre; he actually provides the tools to develop a leader, not just talk about what one is or does.
Each chapter covers roughly one development phase. Inside each phase we learn that there are Process Items that are specific types of challenges leaders typically will face during each phase. By identifying Process Items, leaders are armed with the means to see beyond their immediate circumstances to what the underlaying developmental lesson might be. I've been using these Process Items for years in my own life and in coaching other leaders to grow. They are tremendously helpful!
Just so you don't think this is just a how-to book, let me say that this book often invokes a deep spiritual response from leaders. It's as if leaders gain perspective on their circumstance and see patterns of development-or lack of development-with new eyes.
This book is written, of course, from a Christian perspective and for Christian leaders. But the appeal of the book goes far beyond just this segment of the population. Dr. Clinton offers a useful grid for recognizing the lessons and patterns of leadership development.
If you desire to be equipped with the tools to develop leaders, then this book is for you!The Making of a Leader: Recognizing the Lessons and Stages of Leadership Development Overview
