Zealous Love: A Practical Guide to Social Justice ReviewZealous love consists of eight sections, one each for
* human trafficking,
* unclean water,
* refugees,
* hunger,
* education,
* the environment,
* HIV and AIDS,
* and economic inequality.
Each section consists of an introduction, which the authors call the "briefing." These introductions tend to give numbers and facts that document the problem. (Numerous footnotes seem to indicate that the numbers are at least colorably accurate.) These briefings probably do not tell the reader much that he or she did not already know, at least on some vague level. Though the scale of human trafficking might come as a shock, for example, the existence of the problem shouldn't.
After the briefing are "field notes," first-hand accounts from a variety of sources. Some are from missionaries telling about their experiences among refugees, some from church leaders who have led their churches to reduce Christmas spending or to be more active givers to charity, and some are from people who have simply toned down their lives by eliminating what they do not need.
Each section concludes with a "What Now?" section that asks the reader to reflect and then, perhaps, respond. This section contains a variety of references--websites, addresses, and so forth.
This is a book aimed at Christians, filled with scriptural references. The focus is not on spreading the Word but on alleviating the injustices in the world, and to that end, the book is relatively free of specific doctrine and thus should appeal to all Christians, from the most evangelical to the most progressive or liberal. In other words, "Zealous Love" is not an attempt to proselytize. It is an attempt to get believers to respond to the greatest problems the world faces.
There are a few minor objections I have to the book. The first is that it does not offer as many practical options as I expected. Perhaps it was simply that the words "A Practical Guide to Social Justice" at the top of the front cover led me to expect more. On the other hand, I hardly needed a book to tell me of all the charities at home and abroad for which we can volunteer or to which we can donate. Another small quibble is that the book itself is a rather heavy tome, printed on high-quality glossy paper. It seems to me that this product is not the most eco-friendly.
These qualms are minor, though. For the most part, "Zealous Love" is a very good effort to call upon Christians to work for social justice, not by changing the world individually but by becoming more aware of the problems and working in some way to help alleviate the suffering of others.

Glory Invasion: Walking Under An Open Heaven ReviewI am totally amazed at the revelation that God is pouring out on mankind in these last days. It is as if God has heard the cry of mankind and is answering it and using anointed authors to share it with us. Some of the books that I have been privileged to read and review have caused me to grow with leaps and bounds in my Spiritual walk, and I am thankful. This new book by author David Herzog , Glory Invasion, joins the ranks in my opinion, as one of the most encouraging, exciting, and spirit-charged books that I have read. The revelation that he brings to the table I can only call life-changing. There have been several times lately, in certain books that I have read, where I actually feel the excitement of the Spirit of God inside of me as I digest the revelation that I am receiving, this was one of those times. I found myself reading several pages and actually putting the book down so I could meditate on the wonder of the words that I had just read. As a Christian, nothing is more important than following where God is leading, and being in the depths of the flowing waters of His Spirit; David shares where God is going and how to follow and be one with Him and His Glory. Outstanding!
In this work you will understand how creative miracles happen, how to receive supernatural provision and help in awakening your prophetic destiny from its sleep. You will realize God has something wonderful for you to do and through the words of this book, your spirit will have the encouragement to run to complete the race set before you, and you will see and understand that indeed there is more, much more, awaiting you as a Christian. And you will deeply understand, we do serve a 'Mighty God,' who is indeed more than enough to defeat lack, sickness and all the other obstacles that have darkened your door. How exciting is that?
It's time to rejoice, and fill your mind and spirit with words that will make a difference and change your life. You will find those words in this anointed book; I would never attempt to try and explain in such a short review the deep revelation you will receive, but believe me, they are there. I highly recommend Glory Invasion to you. It's time to go to the next level of His Glory and this book will help you make the climb. Thank you David for sharing this revelation with us; God's hand is truly upon you.

God Is More Than Enough (LifeChange Books) ReviewFirst, the title of the book caught my eye because YES I know it is true - that God is more than enough. So at first look all I knew was the title of the book which made me like and desire it. Then once I received the book I came to realize that it was a book by best selling author and Pastor Tony Evans concerning Psalm 23.
The book itself is small in size as well as in the number of pages - 90 plus the extra pages every book always has. But this is no small book when it comes to delivering the message that God is more than ENOUGH. This book speaks volumes when it comes to the matter of addressing the sufficiency of God for the life of every believer.
In Chapter 1 of the book, Pastor Evans asks, "Just Who Is Your Shepherd?" And right from the beginning of the book in the first chapter he starts hammering hard at our hardened self-sufficient, self-serving hearts...who is our Shepherd? And he makes the point that many of us claim Jesus as our Savior, but then asks us is he our Shepherd? This is convicting territory and the spiritual waters can get pretty rough if you have just been dabbling in Christianity; I mean you are living the "a little bit of Jesus goes a long way," or "just a little dab" of Jesus over our sinful lives and we are good to go kind of Christian life. Well, Pastor Evans is not going to tread lightly concerning this matter because he is right...we need to know who our Savior, Lord and Shepherd are...when life is going good as well as when it is not.
In Chapter 2 Pastor Evans writes about the fact that "GOD is More Than ENOUGH to Meet All of our Spiritual Needs." Every single one of them! He states that "God wants to give us back our soul," or as he refers to it, our personhood. I like that. Amen! I needed to be reminded of that. Jesus has given us back our soul...our personhood back and he can and will meet all of our spiritual needs as the Shepherd of our person.
In Chapter 3 he writes about the fact that GOD is "more than ENOUGH to Meet Our Directional Needs." God wants to be our "spiritual tour guide" as he refers respectfully to God, on our pilgrimage through this world. In Chapter 4 Pastor Evans writes about how GOD is "more than ENOUGH to Meet Our Emotional Needs." He makes the statement about God, "when he's all you have, he's all you need." Now that is powerful. Think on that statement for a while. In Chapter 5 author Evans shares that GOD is "more than ENOUGH to Meet Our Physical Needs." He refers to him as a "good provider." I don't know what your experience with God has been; however, I have found that what Pastor Evans writes is true. Many times I have failed GOD but he has NEVER once failed me. Not ever! Who else in this universe can we say that about for our lives? And Chapter 6 he writes about what is very dear to my heart and that is that GOD is "more than ENOUGH to Meet Our Eternal Needs." He refers to our position as "sure and secure" for all eternity as we "shall dwell in the House of the LORD forever." (Psalm 23:6) And it does not get any better than that.
So, God...our God...our Shepherd IS "more Than ENOUGH to Meet ALL of our Needs" if we will only but get out of his way and out of our own way...(sometimes we are our own worst enemy getting in God's way and our own- the devil and his spiritual cohorts needs do nothing because we are more than ready and happy to mess things up on our own), and live for him by faith and just let him be who and what he wants to be in our lives...and that is our Shepherd.
I received a complementary copy of this book from Multnomah Publishers for reviewing it.God Is More Than Enough (LifeChange Books) Overview

The Blackwell Companion to Christian Ethics (Wiley-Blackwell Companions to Religion) ReviewThere simply is no other book like this on the market. In terms of Christian ethics, the editors require us to see that our worship, the manner in which we are liturgically formed, produces the kind of people we are. They begin with a few chapters explaining how Christian ethics came into being, and how they are determined by our worship practices. What follows are creative/provocative essays that span a wide range of issues including: gender, war, abortion, money, marriage, euthanasia, sex, arts, politics, and the environment. What renders this such an incredible book is how the authors explore what the eucharist, baptism, hymn-singing, footwashing, passing the peace, prayer, and other Christian practices have to do with the aforementioned issues. If you are interested in Christian ethics, and you want to read an accessible book from reputable sources, then you can do no better than this book.The Blackwell Companion to Christian Ethics (Wiley-Blackwell Companions to Religion) Overview

Sacred Compass: The Way of Spiritual Discernment ReviewJ. Brent Bill's latest and most ambitious book in recent years should carry a warning label on the back cover:
1.) Your spiritual path may be dangerous to your health.
2.) Do not attempt this journey alone.
It's those two truths that set Brent's voice apart from a host of other spiritual writers who are crowding into bookstores these days with promises of 10 (or 30 or 365) Steps to Your Spiritual Success and often seem to send you off all alone on this personal quest for spiritual satisfaction.
Brent is a Quaker writer, rooted so deeply in the wisdom of this centuries-old tradition that he can't help but be honest about life's destination (which always lies is death and, in some cases, involves tragic death). At age 57 as this book is released, Brent can feel it in every fiber of his being that God doesn't want us to take this journey alone. God intends us to live in communities and to draw on the wisdom of those communities to help us discern the wisest spiritual paths ahead of us.
Now, don't get me wrong. This book isn't somber. It's not a downer. The golden Midwest meadow and bright blue sky on the cover of Brent's book reflects his own grounding in the steady ethics and expectations of middle-American life. After all, he lives near Indianapolis on a small farm and he works for the Indianapolis Center for Congregations, which is funded by the Lilly Endowment with a specific mission to help local congregations solve their problems. Over the years, he's helped to solve hundreds of thorny problems.
As a writer, Brent most recently wrote books focused on Quaker spiritual wisdom involving the simplest elements of life: light (that book is "Mind the Light: Learning to See with Spiritual Eyes") and sound (that book is "Holy Silence: The Gift Of Quaker Spirituality"). I've read and can heartily recommend both of them.
He's a practical Midwestern farmer, fixer and facilitator - drawing deep water from a denomination that stretches back more than 350 years and played a key role in shaping American values from our colonial era. This makes him a substantial spiritual guide, but never in a flashy way. Think of - oh, perhaps something like Mister Rogers Meets the Dalai Lama.

It's only natural that such a writer would point us toward a tool as the central metaphor for this journey. And the tool he selects is a compass - the hand-held device with a magnetic needle that points sort-of true North.
Unlike a host of other books you'll find in the inspirational sections of bookstores, this isn't a book with lofty passages designed to lift your spirits in the morning - but leave you sinking fast later in the day. This is a book jam packed with tips for organizing and shaping your journey into discernment.
And, note that I said "into," because it's not "toward" spiritual discernment - or "to" spiritual discernment - as if you'll arrive at a golden sign, hand lettered by the finger of God. Brent argues persuasively that this journey never ends and we're never quite sure where it will take us. It's that plain-and-simple honesty that I like best about this book. No false promises here. And, by the end of his book, just in case you didn't "get" the solid tap-tap-tap of Brent's rubber mallet to your forehead -- one of his final chapters is about a Quaker who felt led to a war zone and never returned.
If you've got a stack of those slickly produced spiritual books near your breakfast table, but they only seem to leave you hungry for the next hit of chicken soup - then try this more substantial diet from the heart of middle-American spiritual wisdom.
If you're part of a small group, you'll find that men and women will enjoy this book over a couple of months. You can even experiment with a sampling of the many ideas Brent describes throughout the book. The text is easy to read, the practical benefits of the ideas are crystal clear - and you should spark a good round of conversation each week.
Here's one last suggestion: If you plan to read "Sacred Compass" with a group, a fascinating companion book to read along with it is Nanette Sawyer's, "Hospitality the Sacred Art: Discovering the Hidden Spiritual Power of Invitation and Welcome (Art of Spiritual Living)." At first glance, these two books seem to be two quite different spiritual toolboxes - but the core of both books is an affirmation of communal connection.

Life on the Vine: Cultivating the Fruit of the Spirit ReviewThis book is filled with fresh, insightful comments on the relationship between the Christian faith and our American culture. Kenneson's eyes see dangers to the faith that most of the Church misses; he also offers some helpful theological understandings of the Church. My only fear about this book is that not enough people will read it; whether everyone should agree with Kenneson's conclusions is beside the point: The Church would do well to devote energy to the type of discernment Kenneson undertakes in Life on the Vine. The question Kenneson poses is not often asked, but is essential to Christians of every sort: What does it mean to be Christian where and when I live? If you are a North American Christian, please read this book.Life on the Vine: Cultivating the Fruit of the Spirit Overview

Sharpen Your Discernment ReviewA wonderful book that considers many areas, not all, that a Spirit-filled believer should and would be concerned about! If you want to get a biblical grasp of how discernment works, this book is for you. What I like about this pentecostal perspective of discernment is his grounding in the Word of God, not emotions. He convinces you that you can move with the Spirit of God and be scripturally grounded. If you are seeing visions, etc. and they don't line up with the Word, then guess where they are coming from. Yes, it can be that simple! An especially helpful, insightful and prophetic part of the book is the "Sharpening Your Discernment" chapter, subsection Discernment and Charity. He describes what Christian love (agape) is based on what the Lord says and not the current "soulish" luv! Compromising with the truth and being a "peacekeeper" for the sake of ecumenism or unity is not love. Jesus was a "Peacemaker" who sets the example, along with the rest of the Word. Buy this book, pray while reading this book, and especially, be guided by the Word of God and the Spirit while reading this book and you will advance against the kingdom of this world!Sharpen Your Discernment Overview

2000 Years Of Charismatic Christianity: A 21st century look at church history from a pentecostal/charismatic prospective ReviewThis is a wonderful book that traces the miraculous moving of the Holy Spirit through the church age. The author has done a wonderful service for the church, and especially for the charismatic community. It brings together a lot of fascinating information into one place. The down side of this book is its heavy reliance upon secondary sources for quotations from primary sources. This makes further study very cumbersome, if not prohibitive. It also raises suspicions about the reliability of its conclusions. Not withstanding, it is a book that should be in every charismatic student's or pastor's library.2000 Years Of Charismatic Christianity: A 21st century look at church history from a pentecostal/charismatic prospective Overview

Becoming Adult, Becoming Christian : Adult Development and Christian Faith ReviewAccording to M. Scott Peck's endorsement of Fowler's scholarly Stages of Faith, Fowler is the leader in faith develoment theory. In _Becoming Adult_, Fowler describes, in simpler, accessible language, the stages of faith and how they relate to emotional development. Fowler summarizes the work of Erik Erikson and two other prominent developmental theorists, and compares his stages to theirs. Fowler's summarization of these theorists' views is very helpful. Students of Erik Erikson's eight stages of psychosocial development will appreciate this book very much.Despite the book's title and Fowler's Christian faith, the book is surprisingly non-Christian in orientation, and applies to faith development in general. Examples used in the book span many faith traditions. The chapters on vocation and divine calling are interesting, thought provoking, and insightful.For the reader seeking for models of normal, healthy spiritual and emotional development, this easy to read (but not simplistic) book is an excellent seminal volume in the personal libraryBecoming Adult, Becoming Christian : Adult Development and Christian Faith Overview

An angry, bitter woman in Bolivia, decides she's going to change the social injustices and rampant inequality of educational and job opportunities in her country. She runs to Cuba and becomes one of Che Guevara's henchmen, committing murder and acts of terrorism...
A Marxist leader enjoys the power and privileges of belonging to the upper echelons of a totalitarian regime in another South American country...
What do all these people have in common?
I once read a Peanuts comic strip by Charles Schultz, the creator of Charlie Brown. In it Sally, Charlie Brown's sister, is jumping rope. Suddenly she stops and bursts into heart rending sobs. Linus comes running up to her and asks what's wrong, what happened? Sally looks at him and replies, "I don't know. Suddenly it all seemed so futile."
And that's the answer to the question. Each of these people came to a point in their lives where they lost their raison d'etre. They could no longer see the point of what they were doing. Something was missing from their lives. It all seemed so futile.
In Changed by Faith, Luis Palau introduces us to several such people and also includes many personal stories about his own family. He describes being raised in Argentina by a workaholic father who finally came to faith only to die when Palau was ten. Even though Palau was raised in a Christian home, it took many years of grinding poverty as his mother attempted to singlehandedly raise seven children and some Bible teachers that didn't pull any punches for Palau to finally come to true Christian commitment and faith.
And that is the second group of people he addresses in the book. People who have grown up in church, consider themselves Christians but have arrived at the same sense of meaninglessness that the above-mentioned people had come to. Palau tells us how sterile Christians can come to the joy-filled life of victory, purpose and meaning when they truly surrender their lives to Jesus Christ.
Much of the problem, Palau asserts, is that even many Christians don't read the Bible. Either they don't truly study the scriptures, or they pick and choose what they will believe and obey. This can only lead to the same hollow living that unbelievers endure.
The most interesting part of the book for me as a believer, is the personal stories of the people I described at the beginning of this essay and how each of them turned from a life ignoring God, rejecting God, or even raging against God- to a life devoted to Him.
For people who are in the same boat, this book contains solid scriptural teaching that can lead each "dry and thirsty" soul to the "Streams of water" that never run dry and eternally satisfy.
One negative: At the end of the book Palau tags on, almost as an afterthought, constructive ways Christians can live victoriously by helping their community. Of course that is a good thing, but when he went on to describe strategies to do so he started sounding like he was preaching the social gospel. When he sited good examples from the books, "Blue Like Jazz" by Donald Miller and "The Shack" by William P. Young I had to scratch my head. Both of these books deviate from scripture in defining Christianity and even the Trinity. Since Palau spends a good part of the middle section of his book discussing the need to become biblically literate and testing everything with scripture, I think he needs to practice what he preaches.
However, it's possible that he didn't actually read either book but simply heard about them because the rest of his book is quite orthodox.
In conclusion,I recommend this book for people who are not Christians but are searching for "the thing" that is missing in their lives; for people who consider themselves Christians but suffer from a sense of emptiness; for new Christians; and finally, for believers who would like to understand how to counsel the aforementioned groups.

Leaders on Leadership: Wisdom, Advice and Encouragement on the Art of Leading God's People (Leading Edge) ReviewThis is a great book that really makes you think. It was required reading for a class and very glad it was. The many authors who penned their years of experience have come together to bring a book that is full of knowledge that would be very useful for anyone who is in a leadership position or seeking a leadership position. Great for church boards, lay leaders, etc. Highly recommend this for a group study.Leaders on Leadership: Wisdom, Advice and Encouragement on the Art of Leading God's People (Leading Edge) Overview

TrueFaced ReviewTrueFaced has become one of my favorite books. the truths found in this book have brought me higher in my christian life than anything else. these authors tell us not to try to take care of our sins, but realize that Jesus has already done this on the cross. we must live, if we've accepted Christ's sacrifice, as though nothing, not even our sin issues, are hindering us from God. only pride, not trusting what God says, can hinder us from this peace. the Bible tells us countless times to live in the new life, to put away the old man. this is what it is talking about. God wants us to trust in Him, not take care of all of our problems. that will come later, He merely wants us to TRUST Him. what did we do in our salvation except believe? nothing. and we must live that even after our justification --that we have no power over our sin, and only God can take care of them. yes, some things are hard to be understood and pursued in this book, but the truth mentioned above and the learning of it is more than worth the price.TrueFaced Overview

Keep in Step with the Spirit: Finding Fullness in Our Walk with God ReviewI was in the charismatic church back in the 80's. But, because of certain experiences I had while there, I began to have misgivings about the constant emphasis (not bad in itself but it left out many things it should not have) on the Holy Spirit and the way it was being taught. When I tried to speak with people (leadership) about my feelings I found that I started getting the cold shoulder treatment. I would have appreciated even an honest "I don't know". I was starting to think something might be wrong with me.
Then I ran across Packer's Keep In Step With the Spirit. I can't tell you how greatly this book helped me. It let me know there was nothing wrong with me and that I was not the first person to feel the way I did. Packer even related in the book how, because he was a bookworm (as I've always been) God threw him a lifeline in the form of a volume or two of the works of John Owen (Owen wrote about 18 or more books if I remember correctly) which helped free him from the mental shackles of Keswick teaching.
I am here to say that Keep In Step With the Spirit did the same for me with hyperventilating charismatic/pentecostal teaching on the Holy Spirit. I even bought and gave away a copy to anyone who let on that they were going through what I did. And I also went on to read a number of John Owen's books which helped me to totally remake my spiritual and theological outlook into something with a lot more substance to it than I ever had based solely on what I'd gotten from church.
Sad to say but it's the truth.Keep in Step with the Spirit: Finding Fullness in Our Walk with God Overview
