The Nibble Theory and the Kernel of Power: A Book about Leadership, Self-Empowerment, and Personal Growth ReviewI have used this book for years in a variety of contexts. The Nibble Theory gives readers a new way to think about how they deal with others, and starts the process of replacing Power Over with Power With. The process for finding your Kernel of Power is deceptively simple: it takes a lifetime to complete. The Nibble Theory and the Kernel of Power: A Book about Leadership, Self-Empowerment, and Personal Growth Overview

Who Would You Be Without Your Story: Dialogues with Byron Katie ReviewThis book is a series of dialogues taken from workshops and seminars, so you get a good flavor of what it would be like to attend one. The dialogues, like The Work, aren't spectator sports. Reading her technique without trying it gets zero results, and reading these dialogues without 'playing along' may also yield very little results. However, if you dive in as an active audience member, these dialogues take you deeper than you may have gone doing The Work on your own.
I first discovered _Loving What Is_ a few years ago when I was going through a tough time, and couldn't get my brain out of the hamsterwheel of 'why did this happen?' 'what did I do wrong?' and most of all 'why can't I get over this?'. In less than an hour of doing The Work, my entire perspective changed. It was almost miraculous. Needless to say, I've been a believer ever since.
This isn't to say I agree with everything Katie says. And I do find her calling everyone 'sweetheart' a bit wearing. She says in one book (and again in this) something to the effect that if her kids ever tell her they won't miss her when she dies she'll celebrate because they'll be 'free.' That's a little harsh, to me. I don't aim to go that far! But that doesn't mean that I can't go a long way on the journey with good results.
The Work isn't easy, and it takes a certain amount of patience and mental flexibility to do it right. In a sense it's a relief to read these dialogues because you realize you're not the only one who reaches these walls in your thinking; and you get to see how Katie helps them break through, which you can then apply yourself.
If you're new to Byron Katie's works, there is a tiny appendix and the Judge Your Neighbor form in the book, but I don't think that's quite enough--doing the 'turn it around' statements is tricky for beginners and the appendix doesn't focus on those. You can learn by careful study of the dialogues, but you may find her website or her earlier books to be more helpful. If you've got her other books, don't pass this one over as quickly as you might. It served as a needed reinforcement for me, and in her parts of the conversations there are plenty of wonderful insights--mine is already heavily underlined.Who Would You Be Without Your Story: Dialogues with Byron Katie Overview

When the Game Is Over, It All Goes Back in the Box ReviewWhen the Game Is Over It All Goes Back in the Box is a book on life by John Ortberg, a Presbyterian pastor. His argument is thus: you will die, and when you do, you will lose all the stuff you have. Therefore, instead of focusing on things you cannot keep, focus on things you can.
Ortberg says that the object of life is, as Jesus said, to be rich toward God. Pleasing God is part of this; part of it is putting a greater priority on personal relationships. This also turns out to be the place where we find true fulfillment. Ortberg's main target is those who say they will work less and spend more time with their families "when things settle down." His message is this: things never settle down until it's too late.
The book is written with an amusing game theme. Ortberg borrows a lot of anecdotes from a lot of different authors, which is fine. He gives credit where credit is due. Ortberg has a surprisingly good sense of humor. Sometimes his jokes are pretty corny, but on the whole he seems like a funny guy. My only criticism of his writing is a small one: several chapters tend to run a little long (the reader has gotten the point and is ready to move on).
There is criticism due the publisher: on nearly every other page, there are excerpts from the text blown up in boxes on the same page. Perhaps this is done for those flipping through the book in a shop, or for those who skim, but for the actual reader, it is incredibly annoying and distracting.
On the whole, When the Game Is Over It All Goes Back in the Box is an accessible, engaging, humorous book on Christian living and eternity. This is obviously a Christian book, but the theologizing does not get heavy-handed, and Ortberg does not beat the reader over the head with the Bible. It can benefit any Christian as well as nonchristians who are feeling unfulfilled.

Pagan Spirituality: A Guide to Personal Transformation ReviewDid you know that there are different levels of spiritual development? I didn't until I read this book.
The initial chapters of this book explore the theories of Ken Wilber, a spirituality psychologist. His ideas are related to Pagan spiritual development in a way that the non-scientist can understand. The authors explain how a person progresses from infant to young adult and beyond the young adult stage into stages of more wisdom and self-reflection. The authors liken one's spiritual growth to the changes one goes through when going from helpless infant to someone who can run marathons.
In all there are nine developmental "spaces" and four different quadrants that readily conform to a Pagan world outlook. Joyce and River take the reader on a tour through each space and each quadrant with exercises, meditations and other activities.
The book is set up as a teaching guide, and would work best for a group situation, although the authors do include notes on how to make the contents work if you happen to be solitary, which a great many Pagans are.
Each chapter of the book is beautifully designed to make navigating through the book as easy as possible. Each chapter has section headings such as Questions to discuss, Exercise, My Journal, or Visualization. At the beginning of the book the reader is encouraged to create a spiritual progress map listing things that he or she wishes to accomplish in the coming year. The following chapters build on this map by returning to it and checking on progress toward the goals set forth in it. Each chapter builds on the lessons learned from the ones previous.
Chapters focus on different aspects of growth, both of the individual self and the way in which that individual interacts with the greater Pagan community, the mundane world and beyond to the spirit world. Chapter titles show what the reader can expect to find with such descriptions as Growth and Magick from the front end of the book to Energy Work from the back end of the book.
This book would be most useful to a shop that gives classes or a coven leader working with beginners that have progressed beyond the basic Wicca 101 level. It would also be a perfect workbook for a group of new seekers that are forming their own study group. Pagan Spirituality builds on the lessons and explanations found in the authors' first book, Paganism, and the authors suggest reviewing their previous work before tackling the projects of this one. I haven't read their first book, but on the basis of my reading of this one, I will at some point.
The only down side of the book for me was the repetitiveness of the various visualizations, but since each one builds on the last, I understand the reasoning behind the repetitions. If the reader were using the book as a lesson plan meant to encompass a year's study, this slight flaw most likely would become an attribute instead. This is a book I definitely recommend to anyone wishing to deepen their connection to the spiritual side of existence.

The Vein of Gold: A Journey to Your Creative Heart ReviewIf you've read the Artist's Way, and one or two years later you find that you're not making art consistently, you may find this quite helpful. It delves more deeply than the AW in enabling you to identify, clarify, nurture and fulfil your creative desires. It is very well-structured and comprehensive. Ignore, if they bother you, the `new agey' bits: there's much sensible material to be found here. I completed it in about four months without expense (I adapted, or omitted, the exercises if I didn't have the materials). I wrote my narrative time line in less than 2 weeks. It doesn't have to be anywhere near 100 pages: it can be any length you like. (Spending an hour or so a day, for a week or two, on the time line should suffice for most readers.) Unlike the AW, this book does not specify the time you should take for each section. I see that as a positive feature: it is for the reader to determine his/her pace. Yes, it's quite big, too wordy in places, and seems daunting, but it isn't necessary to do every exercise (or every chapter). The seminal sections for me were the ones on story, attitude and sight. Idid the book while learning to draw and would recommend doing it alongside your creative work if possible. If you've bought it and can't face doing all of it, try the sections on story and attitude: they're very good. The Vein of Gold: A Journey to Your Creative Heart Overview

The Energy of Money: A Spiritual Guide to Financial and Personal Fulfillment ReviewI spent my entire life (from early childhood to late 40s) terrified about becoming poor, about never earning enough, about never having enough, etc. I was always financially desperate at the emotional level, no matter what the outer circumstances. On the surface I looked successful and did fine, but inside I suffered constant anxiety about money issues -- about my financial survival.
A friend gave me this book several years ago and reading it (and doing the exercises) changed something fundamental inside of me. In place of anxiety, I now enjoy a sense of peace and security. The material Dr. Nemeth presents is wise and pragmatic, profound and fascinating to read. It strikes very deeply into the secret heart of the reader where our money problems originate. My outlook has been permanently transformed by what I read and I'm very grateful.
If you've ever felt hopeless about money, or simply wanted to do more with what you have, this book will take you on a journey to mastering your finances from the inside out. Read it to your children. Share it with your friends. I'd rate this book 10 stars if I could. The Energy of Money: A Spiritual Guide to Financial and Personal Fulfillment Overview

The Heart of Higher Education: A Call to Renewal (Jossey-Bass Higher and Adult Education) ReviewWhen I saw that Parker Palmer was a collaborator on this book I pre-ordered it immediately. His writing and work have been like a lifeboat for me in both my personal journey and my work as an educator over the course of many years.
I am beginning my ninth year in "higher" education after almost 30 years working with young children and families and my questions have remained consistent. Whether working with the youngest children or graduate students I have been amazed at how the systems that we work within discourage us from considering strategies for the education of the "whole" human. In early childhood education there is an emphasis on language and literacy, fine and gross motor, social and emotional development. In those settings I would ask myself how to acknowledge and reach those more intangible and unmeasurable places in the child: the heart and soul. My work with adult students and colleagues at the University has been the same.
This book tackles the difficult questions and paradoxes of how to create a learning environment in which students are encouraged to cultivate both critical thinking and compassion; mind and heart. The authors do an excellent job of exploring the potential benefits of integrative education and the transformative conversations that may lead us to new ways of teaching and learning together.
If you are interested, like I am, in how to help students learn to "think the world together" rather than "think it apart" in educational settings, then this book is for you.

The Resiliency Advantage: Master Change, Thrive Under Pressure, and Bounce Back from Setbacks Review+++++
Self-rate yourself on a scale from 1 (meaning little agreement) to 5 (meaning strongly agree) on the following ten items:
(1) In a crisis or chaotic situation, I calm myself and focus on taking useful actions.
(2) I'm usually optimistic, seeing difficulties as temporary and believe things will eventually turn out well.
(3) I can tolerate high levels of uncertainty and ambiguity.
(4) I'm good at bouncing back from difficulties and quickly adapt to new developments.
(5) I'm self-confident and have a healthy concept of who I am.
(6) I prefer to work without a written job description since I'm more effective when I'm free to do what I think is best in each situation.
(7) I trust my intuition and "read" people well.
(8) I'm a good listener and have good empathy skills.
(9) I've been made stronger and better by difficult experiences.
(10) I've converted misfortune into good luck and even found benefits in bad experiences.
A low score of (under 25) means your resiliency skills are weak and you would greatly benefit from this amazing, easy-to-read, psychobabble-free book by Dr. Al Siebert, a clinical psychologist and Director of "The Resiliency Center". (`Resiliency' means (i) coping well with ongoing negative change (ii) sustaining good health and energy under constant pressure (iii) bouncing back from setbacks and adversities (iv) changing to a new way of living and working when an old way no longer works (v) and doing all this without acting in harmful ways.)
A middle score of (25 to 45) means your resiliency skills are adequate but probably can be greatly enhanced by using this book.
A high score of (over 45) means you have good resiliency skills and this book will validate many things you are doing right.
This book in a nutshell presents five resiliency "levels" or skills (level four is divided into 4 sub-levels while level 5 is divided into 3 sub-levels) so, in effect, the reader is presented with ten essential resiliency skills that Siebert has distilled from "the emerging new science of resiliency psychology." This book, besides other important things, shows you how to:
(1) Sustain strong, healthy energy in non-stop pressure and change
(2) Bounce back quickly from setbacks
(3) Gain strength from adversities
(4) Convert misfortune into good fortune
(5) Overcome tendencies to feel like a victim, and stay detached from victim reactions of others
(6) Overcome the three main resiliency barriers.
Who is this book written for? Siebert explains: "The resiliency guidelines in this book focus mainly on resiliency in the workplace, but they apply broadly to all aspects of life." (Actually, I think Siebert is being too restrictive in saying that these principles "focus mainly on resiliency in the workplace." Personally, I think these principles are essential to know so as to effectively play the game of life.)
What will this book NOT tell you? It "will not tell you what to do or how to act or think...Resilient people are those who decide that somehow, some way, they will do the very best they can to survive, cope, and make things turn out well." This book helps you develop your own unique way of being resilient by being both self-reliant and socially responsible.
As a physically disabled person, my personal favorite chapter was entitled "Mastering Extreme Resiliency Challenges." Included here are true stories from 9/11 survivors. I feel Siebert outdoes himself in this penultimate chapter.

Finally, this book has some key features. Important definitions, exercises, and other important and essential information are isolated from the main narrative as inserts so as to highlight key ideas. Each chapter is broken up into sections with anecdotes, examples, and true stories instead of having one long narrative. At the end of each chapter are insightful "Resiliency Development Activities" that help you utilize and think about the information from each chapter.
In conclusion, this is truly a helpful and unique book. Discover for yourself why this book was named the winner of the 2006 Independent Publisher Book Awards in the "Self Help" category at BookExpo America (the largest book publishing event in the United States) and why it was endorsed by the past president of the American Psychological Association!!
(first published 2005; preface; 13 chapters; main narrative 200 pages; notes; index; acknowledgements; about the author)

The Passion Test: The Effortless Path to Discovering Your Life Purpose ReviewPeople like to knock books like these because their ideas are perhaps too simple. My thinking, however, is just the opposite- all the good ideas that really work ARE simple.
To me, the biggest value of this book is that it can really help one get focused on their passions and the things they really want out of life- and few things are more important than that.
Sure you can reduce the book down to its simplest form of "make a list of your passions". But then again, weight loss can be reduced down to "eat less and exercise more" as well. Yes, that's a simple and effective solution, but I doubt most people will be successful with just that simple piece of advice alone. And THAT'S the real value of the book- it provides guidance on how to have a fulfilling life using a very simple idea.
Get this book if you feel like something's not quite right in your life and you need a change of direction- the book will help. Remember, you can't get what you want until you know WHAT you want. Readers might also be interested in The Wishing Well Test: Take the Test - Get Your Wish!. G-luck.

A Thousand Names for Joy: Living in Harmony with the Way Things Are ReviewI wrote a glowing review for "Loving What Is," so it only seems right that I give my impression of this book. I didn't enjoy it as much, and it left me with a very confused impression of who Byron Katie is, and what she actually believes.
I'm not discounting Katie's experiences, but in reading it I occasionally got a sense of contrived ingenuousness. Sometimes it's innocent enough ("I trip and fall down. It must be time for a rest!") other times it's almost heartless, such as when she runs into friends of the family she hasn't seen in several years, and when they ask "how is your dear mother" she replies, "She's wonderful. She's dead." She goes on to write: "Silence. The smiles were gone. I saw that they were having a problem, but I didn't know what it was. When [my daughter] and I were outside the store, she turned to me and said "Mom, when you talk to people like that, they can't handle it." That hadn't occurred to me. I was just telling the truth."

This is a sixty year old woman writing. No matter what happened to her to change her worldview so substantially, surely she still has an idea of social mores and compassion. When my mother dies someday, and if I run into some old friends of hers, I would expect to tell them the news in a kinder way.

Later in the book she talks about the fact that loving what is can seem heartless, and says that no matter what happens -- no matter how terrible -- she rejoices in it. "When I woke up from the dream of Byron Katie, there was nothing left, and the nothing was benevolent. It's so benevolent that it wouldn't reappear, it wouldn't re-create itself. The worst thing could happen, the worst imagination of horror...and it would see that as grace, it would even celebrate, it would open its arms and sing "Hallelujah! ... It cares totally, and it doesn't care at all, not one bit...it's in love with what is, whatever for that may take."

And yet, she also talks about the fact that she would speak from a place of compassion to a woman hitting a child. But, if the mother is hitting the child, and the child is in pain, obviously this "is" and must be "the best thing that can happen." Why try to change the best thing?
I believe wholeheartedly in accepting reality, but I can't accept that just because it "is" that we are to rejoice in it. When a child is molested and thrown into an outhouse toilet to die, as happened in Colorado about 10 years ago, should I say "Hallelujah!"? I can accept that it happened, and that things like this happen, but I do not see that just because they are, that they are cause for joy. I can agree with Eckhart Tolle ("The Power of Now") when he writes that we should either accept situations completely, or take steps to change them. If I can do anything to protect the children in my family from predators, I will do so. If one of them, god forbid, is kidnapped and hurt, then I will accept that and move forward. But, rejoicing seems wrong.
Katie writes about "being lived" instead of living, about watching her hand move to "hold a cup of anything and drink it, a liquid I call tea, for example, but I can never know that either." Her job, she writes, is to delete herself.

But it sounds as if she was deleted already. She didn't do "the work" to experience her life transformation. By her own account she was in utter despair and unable to be around anyone. She woke up one day no longer "Byron Katie." "At the beginning" she writes, "in 1986, I lived in a state of continuous rapture ... if someone asked what my name was, I might say, 'I don't have one.' They would say 'your name is Katie,' and I'd say 'No, it's not.' The would say 'you're a woman,' and I'd say 'That's not my experience.' ... It's mature now. When people ask me my name, I'll say 'Katie.' I'll say, 'It's cool this evening,' or 'Come look at the clouds, sweetheart' ... if you tell me its a tree, I'll agree with you."
So, it seems that Byron Katie was obliterated one night in 1986, and some non-being, some universal "now" took her place and had to learn to communicate and live in human society. In doing so, she's now teaching anyone who will listen how to get to the same point. But, I don't want to be deleted. I like having an identity, and thoughts, and at least the idea that when my hand moves I'm moving it, not that it's being moved for me.
She implies that such behavior as inviting people to look at a sunset, giving people her name, or putting on clothing is something superficial and even silly, and something she only does because not to do so makes other people uncomfortable. She describes being in the height of ecstasy when she realizes she's been sitting for two hours without one single thought. I get the impression of a person so caught up in the spiritual world that she completely forgets about physical necessities, the sort of person who needs to be reminded to bathe, and dress, and who can't be trusted not to give away all of her money and credit cards to people on the streets; the sort of person who would've been one of those medieval saints who lived in caves and relied on donations of food from the local villagers.
But, I don't think the real Byron Katie is like that. When I've watched her in action on her website, she comes across as occasionally gently sarcastic, she obviously has pretty strong opionions, and judging from her well kept hairstyle, clothing and jewelry, she hasn't completely given up on the finer things of life and moved to the sort of ascetic lifestyle that her self-described mental state would seem to automatically create. That's fine. I believe she should enjoy the fruits of her labors. It's just seems to contradict her self-professed mental state. Maybe it's part of the "show" that she's had to learn to put on after her transformation into whatever she is now. I suppose people in modern society would be less likely to listen to a spiritual leader with matted, unkempt hair and tattered clothing.
My mindset is to accept what works for me, and hold the rest in a state of "I don't know." Byron Katie's "work" really has made a dramatic difference in the way I'm living my life; and even though a lot of what she says appears crazy to me, I also know that she's operating from a completely different viewpoint. I also know that, if what she writes is the truth, she would completely agree with me that she's insane, or wonderful, or evil, or enlightened, or completely lost, thereby allowing me to make my own conclusions and develop my own growth.

I know "the work" works because it's making my life better. As far as the rest of her philosophy, well, I guess if it's true I'll evetually come to realize the truth. If it's not, I'll forget it, and continue with what works for me as I continue to seek truth and health. Azrael Loves Chocolate, Michael's A Jock: An Insider's Guide to What Your Angels Are Really Like ReviewThis is a book for EVERYONE, regardless of your religion.
I was hesitant at first about buying a new book on angels by a new author, but after years of reading about angels and never really making any connections with them, I was desperate to give this book a try. Heck, it was new, hopefully she had something to say that other authors (i.e. Doreen Virtue) hadn't.
I now can't live without this book and I've wound up give four copies away so far.
Azrael Loves Chocolate has to be the funniest, most open, most honest New Age book I have ever read. (I used to work in a New Age store, so I've read dozens.) Lysette keeps it real when talking about angels and to loosely quote her, she doesn't use all those woo-woo New Agey trappings that have just become the norm for the genre. Fresh, witty and sassy, Lysette paints the angels in a way that has made them more real to me than ever. I've learned that they're not just these solemn divine beings that we can go to for help, but they have personalities, and they have qualities about them that make me as a human feel better about connecting with them.
Lysette discusses twelve archangels that she's interviewed (she's a professional angel medium) and asks them every day questions like what their favorite music is, how they feel about the state of the world, and what their favorite pasttimes are. While in any angel book on the market, you can find out that Archangel Michael is the patron of warriors and police officers, Lysette brings the angels to life and up to date. I found out that Michael loves football, rock-n-roll, buffalo wings and surfing. Archangel Sandalphon digs jazz and was the inspiration for the god Cupid. Yes, Azrael, the angel of Death, loves chocolate...and classic movies and popcorn.
Lysette was even brazen enough to ask them what their ideal date was and there was not a time when I wasn't laughing at the angels' responses. Finally, for the first time in forty years of searching, the angels feel real to me.
Another feature of this book is a review of each angel's mansion and a write-up that discusses what point in your life each angel will appear. Another first for me, I feel that Chantel wrote the book for me, that she knew me and understood what it's really like wanting to live a spiritual life in a mundane world.
There is some material that really goes against the grain of what New Age has been saying all these years, especially if you've followed things like "The Secret." Amidst the humor, Lysette also offers some new images of Heaven, discusses the purpose of life as taught by Archangel Gabriel, and explores the philosophy of fate vs. free will. Her writing doesn't come off preachy, but her presentation definitely gives one a moment for pause.
Still, even if you don't agree with the philosophical part of the book, you will love reading the angel interviews. Lysette is definitely a fresh new voice in New Age...and it's about time we got one.
Aside from the book, I went hunting for Lysette to see if there was any information on the internet about upcoming stuff and signings. This woman is everywhere on the net! I wrote her a few months ago and got a letter back from her that was genuine and heartfelt. And her humor knows no bounds, my god is she sassy...and I love it! She didn't come off like some glassy-eyed spiritual guru that sits on pillows in robes to quietly discuss the evolution the universe. She's real, up front, and proposes spirituality in a way that is actually logical, practical and achievable.Azrael Loves Chocolate, Michael's A Jock: An Insider's Guide to What Your Angels Are Really Like Overview

Way of the Horse: Equine Archetypes for Self-Discovery - A Book of Exploration and 40 Cards Review"[Horses] mirror, and help us recover, the beauty, power, and nobility of our own spirit hat elusive Presence so easily lost in the frenzy and disconnection of civilized life. Now that horses are now longer obliged to work in our fields and carry us to war, they're free to do something arguably more important: work on us." - From the book
Three years in the works, the Way of the Horse oracle deck and companion book are a masterful combination of the "archetypal realistic" art of Kim McElroy and profound essays of Linda Kohanov. Ms. Kohanov, a writer and riding instruction specializing in equine-facilitated human development, conveys the exquisite sensitivity of horses--especially in terms of intuition, present-moment awareness and the detection of human emotion--with the oracular messages from the Way of the Horse deck.
A 40-card deck graced with lavish matte illustrations by Ms. McElroy, the Way of the Horse cards captures the spirit of these majestic animals, as well as mythological equines such as Chiron, Pegasus and the Hippomorphic goddess Demeter.
For each of the cards in this deck, the author provides three themes, as well as the Gift and Challenge. Weaving archetypal ideas, Jungian psychology, moving anecdotes and equine wisdom, Ms. Kohanov reminds us to use the Way of the Horse cards for inspiration, insight and healing in the present moment--rather than as fortunetelling devices aimed at giving pat answers or detailing the future.
Because of my lack of familiarity with horses, I was surprised at the extent I resonated with the author's introduction--let alone the cards themselves and the accompanying essays!
Published by New World Library, the deck and 255-page clothbound hardcover companion book comes in a sturdy box--almost too sturdy, in fact! (I had a hard time removing the cloth-bound companion book from its niche, and was wary of tugging the chocolate-hued satin ribbon for fear that I would tear something. Happily, the ribbon intended to ease extraction wasn't too damaged after my tug of war session!)
The cards measure approximately 5 x 3 ½ inches and have their own box for ease of portability.
Although I've never been especially attracted to horses, the Way of the Horse box set sparkled with possibility from the time I laid eyes on the cards. After reading the introduction in the companion book, I realized this was, indeed, a special oracle.
I then felt to place the deck face down, fanning out the cards. I kept "hearing" the number 2, and was guided to select card #2 (I hadn't shuffled the deck).
I smiled when I saw that the them was "Believe", encouraging faith in the unknown and unformed, especially in light of the Authentic Self freed from the defensive scaffolding of the ego.
As I began to read the essay on Card 2, the commentary reminded me of a book I happen to be reading right now--A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life's Purpose by Eckhart Tolle. Imagine my surprise when Ms. Kohanov mentions this EXACT book within Card #2's essay!
Needless to say, the synchronistic spiritual truths offered by the author (and the equines!) ministered to my spirit and uplifted my soul.
Whether you raise horses, love to ride them, or adore equine art, you'll no doubt fall in love with the Way of the Horse book and deck. However, even if you're not familiar with horses or don't feel particularly attracted to them (but care about and honor animals), there is a wealth of practical guidance, heart-warming stories and pathways to healing found in both the companion book and the stunning art of Ms. McElroy.

A Hidden Wholeness: The Journey Toward an Undivided Life ReviewParker Palmer has gifted us all with his revealing reflections and insights about living an undivided life. He writes about the conflict that we experience when our professional life and our inner beliefs are not aligned.
"A Hidden Wholeness" addressed many questions for me including:
What happens when the person that I have become, shaped by my work experiences, faces decisions that have to be made... decisions that I know will feel 'bad' or 'wrong' because they threaten my integrity?
What happens when I find myself part of an organization or profession that has evolved and changed in ways that are troubling?
What happens when I feel stuck between a rock and a hard place and can't see clearly where to go?
What happens when advice from others and self-help books are of little or no value?
Palmer shows how we can support one another in today's busy and often impersonal world by creating a unique and very special kind of community. The ideas presented in this book are well grounded and applicable to all.
This is an important book for all individuals who are concerned about or troubled by the divisions that exist in the lives we lead. Spending a few quiet hours with Parker Palmer's new book, "A Hidden Wholeness", may just change your mind about what is possible... and this book is one that you will want to pass on and share!

If the Buddha Dated: A Handbook for Finding Love on a Spiritual Path ReviewI have read more than my share of self help books but this is the most helpful book I have ever read. It started out slow - in the first pages I was rolling my eyes because I felt like it was simple stuff I already knew, but by page ten I was engrossed and thrilled. It is simple, straightforward, fun reading, it makes complete sense and helps clarify the issues that come up in every kind of relationship, from partners to potential partners, to family and friends. I could not put it down. I had an 'aha' every few pages, found it joyful and affirming and incredibly helpful. When I was halfway through it I bought 8 more copies and gave them to eight friends. They all loved it and have all given copies to their friends and family. I quickly saw my relationships to others and to myself start to change, I actively used the theories to improve my dynamics with others and one day read just one sentence and completely let go of some pain I'd been carrying for days over a conflict with a friend. Poof - it was gone and I was looking at it from a whole new place and learned a lesson I have used again and again since that day. I also re-established contact with a friend who I'd parted ways with years ago and in one easy conversation we came together again resolved the problem, laughed over how big we'd made it and have had a healthier, happier and closer friendship than ever since. I am back today to order 3 more copies for three more people - one of them is the new man in my life whom I feel this book was intrumental in helping me find. I'm choosing differently, approaching things differently and what's more - I'm happier and feel more clear and peaceful about relationships than I ever have. Get this book and a few extras for the people you love - you won't regret it. And grab your highlighter- there are gems on every page.If the Buddha Dated: A Handbook for Finding Love on a Spiritual Path Overview

Soul Revolution: How Imperfect People Become All God Intended ReviewSoul Revolution reads like a daily devotional or small group study book, tracing what Burke calls the "60-60 experiment" through discussions of various aspects of the Christian life focused on loving God and loving others. Burke uses illustrations and stories from the church he founded in Austin , Gateway Church, offering examples of the kind of transformation that took place when the church practiced the 60-60 experiment. The experiment was essentially a challenge for people to turn their focus to God every 60 minutes of their day for 60 days. The goal of this practice is "to stay consciously aware all through your day that God is with you and desires loving, trusting relationship" (43).
Obviously this is an extremely simple practice and nothing terribly new, yet the book is filled with stories of people who feel their lives have radically changed through regularly turning their attention to God throughout the day. I did not find the ideas Burke presented as particularly radical or revolutionary looking back on Christian history, but the stories of change in the book are both radical and revolutionary. Burke describes a community struggling with addictions, violence, abuse, greed, selfishness who were able to find a new freedom from these vices through the community of Gateway journeying together.
At times, the stories Burke shares makes the 60-60 experiment seem like a kind of magic cure for the problems that plague us in life. In the chapter on tithing, Burke warns that no one should "give to get" (240), but each of the stories recounts people who have decided to begin tithing for a period of time and experienced unexpected material or financial gain. While I respect the way that Burke frames his discussion of wealth and the Christian journey as a whole, it is hard not to feel like the 60-60 challenge is in some sense being pushed as the miracle cure for addictions, poverty, depression, etc.
I have been having several ongoing conversations with different people in my life about what spiritual growth looks like. It is easy to say that the goal is to 'look like Jesus' or to 'keep your focus on God,' yet difficult to make any kind of broad generalizations about what that might actually like in someones life. I found Burke's approach to be helpful, particularly in it's simplicity, but I think there needs to be more discussion about what it means to grow spiritually when you don't see radical changes or results in 60 days.Soul Revolution: How Imperfect People Become All God Intended Overview

Supernatural Healing Review"Supernatural Healing" is a compilation of stories of miraculous deliverance and freedom, edited by Sid Roth and Linda Josef. Stories of lives changed from despair to victory, of breaking the curse of destructive family patterns, and near death experiences all reveal the power of the Word of God in miraculous healings taking place today.
These true life testimonies are faith building examples which illustrate how God is pouring out His Spirit today in accordance with the words of Jesus in John 12: 12-14, "...greater works than these will he do, because I go to My Father."
I especially appreciated the "What I Can Do" instructions for applying principles of healing to my own life situation. These directives can also provide help for the reader to claim the promises of God in prayer, experience an anointing, and receive healing.
"Supernatural Healing" is for anyone seeking deliverance, physical or emotional healing, and a life of victory and freedom.

Loving What Is: Four Questions That Can Change Your Life Reviewthis would be it. I'm an ordained Christian minister, and I'd give out *this* book before the Bible itself. That's how powerful her simple approach IS. It is literally the key to end all suffering. Sounds too good to be true? It isn't. I have been a student of psychology, personality and spirituality ever since I was a young girl. I studied theology in college, minored in psychology, have dozens of self-help and self-discovery books on my shelves, been a student of cognitive psychology and Toltec Wisdom (ala "The Toltec Way" by Gregg and "The Four Agreements" by Ruiz)...
From these, I came to believe that my own thoughts create my own suffering. It's never the person or situation that causes me grief; it's the story I *tell* myself *about* the person or situation that is the problem! Yet, although I knew this intellectually, I had a hard time dismantling all my core beliefs and judgments. My intellect likes mind candy and the accumulating of knowledge, but it wasn't enough to put me over the edge to freedom.
But this book did. It is all the above disciplines combined, but MUCH more. I was having anxiety attacks and an irrational fear of death and dying; this book helped snap me out of it immediately (along with the grace of God). Loving What Is is not by a counselor or some New Age guru; it's by a normal woman who was on the floor of a half way house, feeling bitter and angry, who had an epiphany when she asked herself a series of 4 simple questions. Her depression lifted, and she was a new woman in ONE instant. Since then (1986) she has shared her message, and it's changed thousands of lives.
To see what The Work is about, visit her website at http://thework.com This book is a life changer. The information it contains can replace all self-help books...it's that transformational. It's also an easy read, and very engaging. After all, she's just a "normal" woman like you and I who stumbled on 4 basic questions called Inquiry that will change your life forever.
If you are looking for answers to "why", are tired of feeling tired, angry, depressed, alone, cheated, sad, or confused, please get this book today.
