Death Ecstasy Other Worldly Journeys (SUNY Series in Religious Studies) ReviewCollins and Fishbane, two of the world's leading scholars of apocalyptic literature and the Hebrew Bible respectively, have written what should be a classic treatment of the range of views about "afterlife" held by Jews and Christians at the turn of the Christian era. This book was key to my own research in separating pop culture views from those actually held by people in ancient times. The authors write with clarity, insight and from a depth of familiarity with their subject. As with other books by each author, this volume models how critical scholarship can be made available to ordinary, intelligent readers to shine the light of wisdom onto the search for understanding and meaning in our world today.Death Ecstasy Other Worldly Journeys (SUNY Series in Religious Studies) Overview

Traveling between the Worlds: Conversations with Contemporary Shamans ReviewI picked up this book thinking it was a modern-day counterpart of the excellent "Shamanic Voices: A Survey of Visionary Narratives" by Joan Halifax. But while Halifax interviewed or referenced the words of "traditional" shamans, many maintaining a life in their indigenous tribal settings, Webb chose to interview "contemporary" shamans who have all brought their teachings to Western consumers.
I recommend Webb's book as a wonderful overview of the current "shamanic" market out there today. It presents, in nicely packaged chunks, interviews with two dozen people who have dedicated themselves to sharing modern-day "shamanic" healing practices and philosophies to pretty much anybody who is willing to take the time to listen (although, in some cases, you'll need to bring a wad of cash as well).
Notice I put "shamanic" in quotes, because some of the people interviewed by Webb can only be called a "shaman" by using modern-day pop terminology, and only a few appear to have gone through any of the traditional grueling rituals and (often painful) rites associated with the type of shamanism often portrayed in Halifax's book (and Mircea Eliade's ground-breaking work on the subject as well). Nonetheless, pretty much everybody in Webb's book meets Eliade's definition of a shaman, i.e. "in which a spiritual leader traveled to an upper or lower world through a controlled state of ecstasy (trance) and conversed with spirits in those other worlds for the benefit of the community (or individuals within the community)", so I'm willing to give Webb and her subjects the benefit of the doubt in that respect.
That being said, readers of Webb's book would be well advised to take a healthy dash of salt with them as they peruse the words of the 24 modern-day shamans she interviews.
I said Webb presents a wonderful overview of the current shamanic market, and I mean it in that she gives a very good look into what's out there, both good and bad. Webb seems to see herself as the journalistic explorer, foraging through the jungles of spirituality to find hidden wellsprings of spiritual knowledge. And, as such, she doesn't seem to ever cast the eyes of doubt upon any of her subjects, instead presenting all of them as equally valid sources of divine truth.
In short, Webb leaves the validation of her sources as an exercise to the reader. And, like many exercises, I found this one to be quite stimulating and beneficial, although tiring at times.
Some of the interviews in this book are real gems. For example, I found the ideas of Gabrielle Roth to be quite inspiring, the views and advice of Tom Cowan to be very insightful, and the anecdotes of Malidoma Patrice Some' to be very intriguing. Several other people interviewed by Webb presented truly memorable ways of thinking that I find myself repeatedly turning back to for enjoyable reference.
Yet mixed in between the established, respected modern-day shamanic practicioners are interviews people of very dubious backgrounds. Some, like the infamous Brooke "Medicine Eagle" Edwards, are considered by indigenous people to be among the most exploitive frauds out there today. Others, such as "Bee Shaman" Simon Buxton, are entertaining to read but offer no basis of reference that anything they say is anything more than a glorious work of fiction.
I finished the book quite glad to have read it, even if I wasn't always certain of the validity of the people Webb was quoting. In the cases where I found myself doubting the integrity of one of Webb's sources, I had to ask myself why I felt that way, and to search inside to understand what it was that I felt was spiritually rubbing me the wrong way. Likewise, I also made sure I questioned myself when I found a writer I particular agreed with to make sure I was accepting their views because they made sense, and not just because of their charismatic verbal abilities.
Webb should be applauded for her effort. And even if a particular basis for ritual presented by one of her sources isn't historically sound, that doesn't mean it isn't spiritually valid. As Tom Cowan told Webb, "Every shaman has an idiosyncratic way of practicing. Even if you are in a strong tradition and are trained by elders in that tradition, you end up practicing in your own unique way. ... [T]he power you get comes from the spirits." Only you can judge for yourself whether a particular path, no matter how modern or traditionally based, is the one that's right for your life's journey. Having a good selection to choose from, to me, can only help the process - as long as you make your choice in a well thought-out manner.
Enjoy!Traveling between the Worlds: Conversations with Contemporary Shamans Overview

Plant Spirit Healing: A Guide to Working with Plant Consciousness ReviewThis accessible yet comprehensive book is a tremendous gift of both wisdom and practical application on how the universe actually works and how to tap in and play a part yourself. Plant Spirit Healing is about the difference between knowing about a plant (available through book learning and use) and experiencing its spirit - where you merge with it, communicate through an exchange of insights, and achieve a full and lasting relationship. This book benefits from Pam Montgomery having taught and honed this material many times. If you cannot take Montgomery's apprenticeship program and experience her own ebullient spirit, this book is the next best thing.
Emphasizing that each person's knowing and experience of different plants may be different in what is really a Both/And, rather than an Either/Or, universe, Montgomery guides you to find your own plant spirit guides appropriate for this time in your life journey. Chances are who they are will surprise you.
This remarkable book takes the reader on a journey from (possibly) skeptical interest in plant spirits, to plausible, to possible, to practical. At no point does the journey include religious overtones or spacey far-out suggestions.
Montgomery builds a foundation based on physical and energetic qualities of both people and plants. Each new parcel of knowledge is presented in a flowing sequence based upon previously explained information. The trip is full of "of course" moments where you recognize that you already knew what she is presenting, but perhaps did not know where to place it in your established body of knowledge. As much as anything this book greatly expands and updates your established body of knowledge.
Fine-tuning gathered from years of teaching workshops and apprentice programs has honed Montgomery's understanding of the pace and paths by which people can not only learn, but can experience and assimilate deeper knowledge. Her expertise allows her to lead the reader through these layers of knowing in the transparent, uncluttered, way that characterizes the best of guides.
The Theme is Relationships.
Despite years of loving plants, I would not have thought that there were so many ways to understand plants, or so many tools for deepening my relationships with them. Indeed, relationship is what this book is all about, including establishing, fostering, and nurturing actual relationships with plants. This includes being open, observant, respectful, and enjoying. It involves appreciating plants and learning from them and moving those relationships on to partnerships. This carries on the theme of Montgomery's previous book, Partner Earth (1997) in which she encourages humans to take responsibility and action to be co-creators and partners with Earth, rather than passive children of Mother Earth.
At one point in Plant Spirit Healing Pam likens establishing a new relationship with a plant to a relationship with a potential lover. Just think about that. It includes breath exchange, attention, respect. One is open, observant, eager to learn all one can about this person who suddenly seems to glow with light. One is gentle and respectful and wants to spend every available moment with the new love, gently growing knowledge and love and a shared history, exploring all facets and aspects of the beloved.
Organization and arrangement
The book's organization is clear and accessible. Different learning modes are accommodated as each chapter presents the material in three modes. Chapters begin with a journal entry from Montgomery's daily interactions with nature and how it feeds her developing wisdom. We catch a glimpse of her slipping into communication with plants and the landscape. Next, the bulk of the chapter is a descriptive exposition of the topic. This is followed by examples which illustrate the ideas and techniques just presented with experiences Montgomery has had with her clients, or that her students have experienced.
The book is divided into three parts, The Theoretical Basis for Plant Spirit Healing, The Practical Application of Plant Spirit Healing and Plant Allies, a section on specific plants. Christian Hummel recently wrote "We are living in a time when ancient principles that have been espoused for ages from Vedic texts to Native American philosophies are being validated by science - a meeting point between science and spirituality where these principles are being tested and proven to be true." [July 2007 Wisdom magazine p. 28 "Accessing the Creative Matrix: The Secret to Healing the Earth" ] Montgomery presents much of this material in Part One by distilling and presenting the essence of a large and varied body of new scientific information in an accessible format that relates to plant spirit and communication. She has gleaned knowledge from others - both ancient traditions and recent science - and incorporates it straightforwardly for easy absorption without being academic. Part Two is a practical journey where actually meeting and getting to know plants is facilitated with a range of different techniques. Part Three introduces the plants as their fully embodied selves giving a sense of the expansive beings they are.
Plant Spirit Healing teaches about how sprit moves in the world, thus bringing spirit into reality, instead of keeping it in the abstract realm of religion. We are given a handbook to understand the wonder of plants, and a guidebook of practical techniques and exercises to form personal, intimate, real relationships with plant beings whose importance, variety, beauty, gifts and outright wisdom are usually ignored. The result reminds me of my joy at the animal tracks revealed by the first snowfall in what has been a gray and lonely November landscape. The joyful feeling of not being alone. The deep knowledge that I share this landscape with other beings who are aware of themselves, who live full and interesting lives, and who are open to knowing me and interacting with me.
Plants have been calling to many of us for the past several decades. Chances are they are somehow calling you as well. This is a guidebook to answer that call, probably in a deeper way than you ever imagined. By the time you have read it you will have established relationships with plant beings, taken a deep journey and found missing parts of yourself.

Dreamgates: Exploring the Worlds of Soul, Imagination, and Life Beyond Death ReviewFirst I read Robert Moss's Conscious Dreaming and from there graduated to Dreamgates. This book is full of insights into worlds we can access beyond our daily waking reality, both in night dreams and by consciously entering into these realms anytime we want. By practicing Robert's Active Dreaming techniques and by exploring the journeys presented in this book, we can become familiar with our own dream locales, which are personal sources of healing, inspiration and adventure. We can travel with others on group dreams to heal ourselves and our planet. We can reenter the dreams we puzzle over and learn more. The fun begins with awareness and intent. Life can be so much more than the old limitations we are used to. Life is exciting and always new, and by remembering to explore dreams with a sense of adventure we expand everything, and that makes all the difference. All we have to do is decide to go there.
This book goes way beyond anything you've read about dreams before.Dreamgates: Exploring the Worlds of Soul, Imagination, and Life Beyond Death Overview

The Druidcraft Tarot Review"Just as the Tarot can help us to understand so many different spiritual approaches, it also offers an ideal medium for exploring the central ideas of Wicca and Druidry. In addition, it is intimately linked to both paths historically and philosophically. And, once we explore these links, we find ourselves arriving at the common ground that is shared by both paths, and that we have called DruidCraft." -from the DruidCraft Tarot companion book
Pagan practitioners and experts Philip and Stephanie Carr-Gomm have teamed up once again with artist Will Worthington to create a masterful Tarot deck with Wiccan and Druidic themes. The colorful, sensual images of the DruidCraft Tarot-as well as the lucid prose of 192-page companion book-promotes the integration of masculine and feminine energies, the strengthening of our connection with the natural world, and the deepening of knowledge of the Self and the Universe we inhabit.
While the DruidCraft Tarot is geared towards pagans, non-pagans will also glean profound wisdom and intuitive information from this deck. For example, I don't consider myself a pagan or Wiccan (yet!), but as soon as I began to look at these cards, they began to "speak" to me. In fact, I've yet to come across a set of Tarot images where I could imagine myself entering the scene and having a conversation with the people portrayed on the cards.
This deck follows the Ride-Waite tradition of 78 cards, with a few changes to the Major Arcana. The Emperor becomes The Lord in the DruidCraft Tarot, and The Empress becomes The Lady. The Devil is replaced by Cernunnos, the horned god of fertility. The Christian tradition usually relegates the instinctual, animal, sexual and material worlds as evil or a part of the "beastly nature" in need of salvation. Druids and Wiccans, however, respect and revere this life-force known as Nwyfre, seeking to integrate and channel it in appropriate and responsible ways. Temperance is re-named The Fferyllt-"a Druid alchemist who combines the powers of fire and water to create harmony, balance, and transformation. " Judgment is re-named Rebirth, and features a child emerging from the Temple-Tomb of New Grange on the morning of the Winter Solstice. Standing outside the entrance, the Priest-Initiator blows into a ritual horn, summoning the re-born initiate soul to awaken.
The four illustrated suits of the Minor Arcana are Swords, Cups, Wands, and Pentacles, and the Court cards are divided into King, Queen, Prince, and Princess-accounting for the different levels of maturity, as well as the balance of masculine and feminine energies among human personality and developmental stages. The 16 character types of the Court cards as reflected by the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator are explained, as well as the four elements in light of alchemy and Jungian psychology.
The DruidCraft Tarot companion book is rich with myth and spiritual tradition, as well as psychological and mystical truths. We are shown how the story of Ceridwen and Taliesin is woven throughout the cards, as well as the portrayal of The Alchemical Wedding/Great Rite which reflects the cosmic dance of the God and Goddess and the interplay between masculine and feminine forces. A detailed graphic of the Meeting of the Inner and Outer Worlds provides a great visual with how the 78 cards laid out in three rings reflect the journey of the soul (the Majors), the journey of the earth around the sun (the Minors), and the 16 ways through which the inner and outer worlds meet within the individual (the Court cards)-all within the context of the Solstices, Equinoxes, Imbolc, Beltane, Lughnasadh, and Samhain.
The text of the detailed card interpretations begins with the Court cards, including the general meaning and keywords of the Princesses, Princes, Queens, and Kings. Next come the Minor Arcana, with the numbers grouped together. In other words, all of the Aces are discussed together, and then the Twos--all the way up to the Tens. General keywords and descriptions are provided for the pips (for example, the Sixes represent Balance, Integration, Union, and Harmony), in addition to the comprehensive individual card interpretations. Lastly, the Majors are described at length. A graphic of each card accompanies the description of all cards, which includes interpretations and keywords for both upright and reversed position.
The back of the cards is mostly chocolate brown with gold matte accents, and are completely reversible.
The last part of the DruidCraft Tarot companion book includes a blessing and dedication ceremony for your cards, a brief divination how-to, and six spreads:
The Awen Spread - For finding the seeds of inspiration that can guide your life, and for observing the relationship between past, present and future in your mental, emotional and physical worlds.
The Lunar Spread - For help in nurturing or giving birth to ideas or projects, or for exploring your creativity
The Pentagram Spread - For help in your search for wholeness, healing, integration, and spiritual development
The Hexagram Spread - For gaining insight into relationships and the inner quest for union
The Spirits of the Circle Spread - For help in determining the influences that are affecting your life, and to explore your sense of identity, in search of the answer to the perennial question, `Who am I?'
The Chalice-And-Wand Spread - For exploring specific situations or problems, or for general readings where a sense of orientation or direction is needed
Two sample readings for The Hexagram Spread and Spirits of the Circle Spread are also given.
-Conclusion-
I am surprised at how hard I've fallen for this deck! Ever since I laid my eyes and hands on the DruidCraft Tarot, I've been using it exclusively for personal meditation and readings, as well as reading for others. The Death card in this deck is my absolute all-time favorite; I'm often discouraged at the traditional renderings of Death-the spectral, skeletal harbinger of decimation and decay. As a Scorpio, Death is (thematically) one of my favorite cards-so to behold Ceridwen (a lunar goddess and `Dark Woman of Knowledge') as a crone surrounded by symbols of transformation and rebirth is a wonderful experience. The book says of this card: "...Look at the tenderness with which the Cailleach holds the skull before she places it in the cauldron of rebirth. Letting go with compassion is an act of love, not anger. At the heart of death is pure compassion. We die to our old selves, jobs, relationships, homes, battles, so that we can be reborn to new ways of working, living and relating in the world..."
The earthy, animated images by Will Worthington provide much in the way of symbolism, color, and movement-making this a wonderful reading deck for Tarot newbies and veterans alike. For example, one look at the proud, silver-haired Queen of Swords enrobed in indigo and purple can remind you that this royal Airy-one often represents older or mature women, those who love "just the facts", and perhaps even widows.
The companion book by the Carr-Gomm's has added so much depth and insight to certain cards, as well as my overall Tarot experience. I highly recommend the DruidCraft Tarot for those wanting a deck that affirms the sacredness of nature, masculine and feminine energies, and all-that-is--without the traditional Christian imagery and good/evil proclivities.

The Sacred Path Workbook: New Teachings and Tools to Illuminate Your Personal Journey ReviewThis workbook is an invaluable asset to be
used with the Sacred Path Cards and companion
book. It further delineates the individual
applications of each card. I have utilized the
workbook more than the companion book, because
it easily highlights each card's attributes
and the challenges presented.

The workbook serves as a tool for
further understanding by encouraging one to
document their progress. By noting progress
over time, emerging patterns are easily
delineated.

The workbook is divided into six sections:
each card's individual application; new
spreads; using the cards to contact the
ancestors in spirit; unique methods of
combining the Sacred Path and Medicine cards;
using both decks to find deeper meaning
toward self-understanding; and workbook pages
for personal journaling and essaying.

This workbook is a must-have companion to the
Sacred Path cards and book.

Elementally Speaking: The Nature Spirits' Guide to their World ReviewI found this book to be incredibly eye-opening. Nature is all around us and we so easily take her for granted. To realize that Nature has her own Spirit, her own purpose and her own mission really made me think about my connection to the world around me. The book points out how it is time for man to work in harmony and synchronicity with Nature before it is too late.
But please don't misunderstand this review and think that this book is nothing but another dry and preachy environmentalist book. It is far from that. This book tells us Nature's serious message, but in doing so we also get to know the "human" side of Nature - which is at once serious, hilarious and deeply moving. This is a great book.

Self-Compassion: Stop Beating Yourself Up and Leave Insecurity Behind ReviewI usually doubt when someone says that a book, or a concept, is life-changing.
Trust me: THIS ONE IS. At least if you find yourself stuck in some struggle in your life that you feel is possible to be solved but you don't know how. If you feel fear of the consequences of doing something in your life you'll also find here what may be the origin and to heal this fear. This book is about being stronger, emotionally stronger, in a way that I didn't see any other author talk about. The subject of this book, I think, is the root for all the other strenghts we can have as human beings. I think that, without this, we can't be sucessful getting to the other strengths.
I've been lost in a depression for the last 6 years and I had read lots of books from the top authors on psychology, self-motivation, personal efectiveness and on and on. All I found was some strength to keep searching, but nothing EVER touched so exactly on what could be the reason and the cure for the bad emotions I had for all these years.
I'm sure that , for me , this book is one more piece of the puzzle I've been working on since my depression came into my life. But I can assert that it's the most meaningful piece so far. No doubt. Sometimes while reading I found myself avoiding the book because the transformation was being too intense in my point of view, but I noticed my pattern and kept on reading. It really was worth!
I could keep writing here for hours about how now I can see a path, a light, that I couldn't see before on some of the most difficults aspects of my life. Past and present aspects.
I strongly recommend this book to you, to anyone.
I'm from Brazil and I'm a bit sad that we don't have a portuguese version of this book yet, because I could buy at least one copy to every person that I like or love (truly, I would give also to the people that I could have any reason to don't like). If I was a rich guy I would give one of this to every psychologist on the world so that this practices could be used on their pacients alike.
Kristin, thank you for coming with this for the world! Thank you very much! Spread the talk about it as much as you can.

Gifts of the Soul: Experience the Mystical in Everyday Life ReviewWOW!!! I have been in the field of meditation, spiritually and metaphysics, studying and teaching, and working as a professional energy medicine healer for 25+ years. And even I learned quite a few new things reading this book. I highly recommend this to both beginners and advanced "Seekers on the Path." It is well-written and highly informative.Gifts of the Soul: Experience the Mystical in Everyday Life Overview
