The Ten Things to Do When Your Life Falls Apart: An Emotional and Spiritual Handbook ReviewI can safely say that this book jumped off the shelf in a bookstore precisely because my life is coming apart. Had I read the reviews first, I probably wouldn't have purchased it, but having read the book now, probably two or three times, I highly recommend this gentle, easy read which has a way of making the reader feel that he/she is not alone. You are encouraged to read the chapters as needed and not necessarily in simultaneous order. The ten things outlined are not rocket science, but they are so logical and comforting to read, whether you are experiencing job loss, death, or any other various tragedies that are mentioned, but not singled out or dwelled upon. I started with the chapter on Simplifying, clearly a common theme in today's news, but this one hits home in a precise, memorable way, which encouraged me to not just clean out once, but go back and get rid of more and more. As the author explains, you cannot hope to deal with the clutter around you even when you are feeling 100%, but when everything else is coming apart, it is essential to free up your surroundings.
The chapter on "Letting Go", again not a new concept, but written in a conversational way that makes sense when your life doesn't... says, "You can't begin to fly when you have concrete on your feet." Take it for what it's worth. If you think this is corny, so be it, but for me it is a great spiritual and uplifting go-to manual. My head is swimming, thus I need the gift this author handed me at this specific time in my life.... order, peace and hope. And, one last thing, a chapter on the great healing value of crying. I really enjoyed the quick read, quick lift quality.

The Unwanted Gift of Grief: A Ministry Approach (Haworth Pastoral Press Religion and Mental Health) ReviewTim has the combined gifts of wisdom, professional and personal experience, education and a "knowing heart", which makes this book an outstanding resource for anyone who has received the unwanted gift of grief. I read his book three times during the first month after my son was killed. I also attended a weekend seminar he facilitated on grief, which helped me understand this turn in my spiritual journey into the "wilderness".The Unwanted Gift of Grief: A Ministry Approach (Haworth Pastoral Press Religion and Mental Health) Overview

The Glory of Heaven: The Truth about Heaven, Angels and Eternal Life ReviewThe excellence of "The Glory of Heaven" is that it dispels error and explains truth without going beyond scripture, without crossing over into speculation as other writers on this topic do. In addition to using scripture to rebut popular New Age ideas about the afterlife, MacArthur utterly demolishes Christendom's false notions, like soul sleep (no immediate presence with God) and purgatory (post-mortem suffering). He even challenges common evangelical theory about the place of "Abraham's bosom." The occupants of heavens are described, both angels and glorified humans, with the distinction made between sanctification and glorification. Finally, MacArthur clarifies seemingly contradictory verses about the nature of the place of heaven, such as some that imply a temple in heaven and others that do not. MacArthur envisions an eternal heaven that transcends space and time rather than one that is just a different name for the New Earth. Because of MacArthur's scripture-laden academic manner, this book may seem a bit tedious for those who prefer conversational or devotional styles, but at least it's faithful to the Bible. (Also, MacArthur attaches 4 appendices that are more devotional pieces written by Boston, Spurgeon and Ryle.)The Glory of Heaven: The Truth about Heaven, Angels and Eternal Life Overview

The Half-Lived Life: Overcoming Passivity and Rediscovering Your Authentic Self ReviewOur perceptions of passivity may often conjure up images of a meek, submissive and non-assertive individual who lacks desire and drive, the kind of person who shrinks from life or is lazy or a gifted procrastinator. But, what if you see yourself as highly goal oriented and ambitious, yet feel as though you are being pulled in the opposite direction of where you want to go? What if you actually feel inadequate, overwhelmed and unfulfilled? Do you sometimes ask yourself, "Am I being all that I can be?" If so, do you ever wonder what's getting in the way?
John Lee's latest book, The Half-Lived Life, answers these questions and more. He defines what passivity actually is and how it can play a role in our lives and reveals how our subconscious fears, grief, rage, and a sense of worthlessness can inhibit us from moving towards what we say we aspire to be; towards our true authentic self. Lee compassionately dives into the heart of emotional suffering and knows first-hand the struggles of the human spirit and the difficulties we can face in finding our own sense of purpose and value. Without a strong sense of worthiness, and without the tools to safely express the deeper emotions tied to our core beliefs about who we are, our dreams, passions, loves and creative efforts fail to fully flourish and become fruitful living experiences for us.
In The Half Lived Life, Lee continues to educate us on the complexities of the human condition. He takes us down his own well-traveled roads and uses his own personal stories and life experiences rather than the overly-used clinical "how to" models to help us understand our own passivity and how it impacts our lives.
This touching book offers a safe and non-judgmental way for each of us to begin to explore the mysteries of how our lives may be only half, rather than fully, lived. It sews together, with a tender hand, all the common and colorful threads that create the rich and complex tapestry of what it means to be human, and yet, it allows the art of what you see in it and gain from it, to be completely and uniquely you. The Half-Lived Life may be your story; it could be all of our stories. It is certainly mine and I am grateful for the great wisdom of this book.

Being with Dying: Cultivating Compassion and Fearlessness in the Presence of Death ReviewI have scanned the market of books about caretakers and the dying process, and to me this is the finest book available on the subject.
It is cut-to-the-bone view of dying with many personal case stories.
The book is in my view not so well-structured. It is divided in sections, but these overlap, and it seems more like a long association about dying, care-taking and the death process. Sometimes the subject in focus is elaborated and sometimes there is a lot of condensed knowledge in a few sentences.
But it doesn't matter.
You are taken on a journey by this book. It contains so much knowledge (years of experience in the field), so much good advice for living more fully, and so many obvious ways to handle the dying process.
The book describes subjects only rarely found in other similar books - how to take care of the body after death (which can be tremendous healing for grievers I must say from personal experience) and the shadow side of caregiving.
I especially like the description of the dissolution of the elements just before death - indeed what it feels like physically to die - experienced from the inside!
It contains many touching stories, and simple, yet profound sentences of great wisdom - summations of experience from Joan's many hours and years on the bedside of dying fellow human beings.
I only read about 20-30 pages a day to have time to think about and absorb the knowledge in the book.
It is stressed again and again that there are no single good way to die. What the dying person experiences can be so very different from what family, friends, and caretakers experience from the outside.
Each chapter is followed by meditations, which can be used on your own or together with a dying person (well, aren't we all!)
And after completing the book - in the end you end up wishing Joan or somebody trained by her could be there for your own death. And that's kind of a compliment... ;-)Being with Dying: Cultivating Compassion and Fearlessness in the Presence of Death Overview

We Are Their Heaven: Why the Dead Never Leave Us Review"Medium" is a great television show...but this book is the reality. No hollywood effects or twists here, this is the life of a real deal woman with an extraordinary ability.
Allison DuBois tells of her gift in such a matter-of-fact way you can't help but be fascinated...her writing reads like someone's journal or diary, just personal recollections in no particular order...a stream of remembrances, much like her first book "Don't Kiss Them Good-bye". She also expresses an uncommon belief that it is a natural gift and not necessarily something that can be learned, so there are no "do this exercise and you too can be a psychic" promises.
Also refreshing in her writing approach is the audience she seems to be writing for...Mrs. DuBois takes a particular interest in young mediums and beginning mediums, shows a great concern for them and seems to write from a "been there, done that, learn from my mistakes and the mistakes of others" mindset...this motherly approach is appreciated and quite endearing.
Her concern for her clients and their well-being is paramount to her and that comes through as well. She peppers the text with personal accounts from her clients', sharing their stories and experiences with her. Personal stories of loved ones lost are explored repeatedly through the chapters...these stories are sometimes enlightening, sometimes saddening, sometimes inspiring, sometimes reassuring and other times painful...they are all difficult to read, you feel so much pain for her clients, I can't help but wonder how she copes with helping people with their pain so much on a regular basis.
Another thing I really like about her is that she doesn't get too detailed in regards to her clients and doesn't get wrapped up in trying to "prove" herself and her abilities. She is often criticized for not giving too many specifics in her books in an effort to "prove her abilities" and "legitimize her work", however these same critics would not expect the same from Pastors or Ministers who counsel the grieving, or anyone else who claims to have a connection and relationship with the Divine. So, it's okay for a Baptist Preacher to say that they speak to God and God speaks to them, but it's not okay for Allison and other Mediums to say they've spoken with loved ones from the other side? Pastors and Ministers should not have to "prove" themselves by breaching client confidentiality and neither should reputable Mediums and Psychics like Allison. Her work ethic is simple proof (in my mind) that she respects her clients' privacy and genuinely cares about them, her credentials and history should be all the "proof" you need of her "legitimacy". Science can only prove so much anyway...there comes a time when you simply choose to have faith and believe in the unbelievable or question and refuse that which you cannot see under a microscope.
Emotional, fascinating, and easy to read.

What about the Big Stuff: Finding Strength and Moving Forward When the Stakes Are High (Don't Sweat the Small Stuff Series) ReviewIf Richard Carlson writes something, I'm going to make it a
point to read it . . . I loved DON'T SWEAT THE SMALL STUFF
and his many books that followed (DON'T SWEAT THE SMALL
STUFF AT WORK, DON'T SWEAT THE SMALL STUFF FOR
MEN, etc.) . . . his words are simple, yet they make sense . . . and they seem to be written directly to you, as if he were speaking to you on a one-on-one basis.
His latest, WHAT ABOUT THE BIG STUFF? does just what it promises in the subtitle; i.e., helps you find strength and move forward when the stakes are high . . . the book tackles a range of difficult issues--from illness, death, injury, and
aging to alcoholism, divorce and financial pressures--but
does so in a manner that is not preachy . . . I actually felt
better after reading Carlson's suggestions on handling
these various situations in a proactive fashion.
In addition, I liked he got me thinking about how I
would handle things that might come my way . . . or
that might be encountered by friends and/or relatives . . . while he doesn't propose glib comebacks, he does give you
many useful ideas as to responses that might lend comfort
to those in need of it.
In reviewing my notes, I'm finding it difficult to choose
just a few parts to share, which is always a good
sign . . . but here goes anyway:
I was sitting with a friend at lunch about ten days after the
terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon. With
tears in her eyes, she said, "Did you notice that not a single person on any of the hijacked planes who had the opportunity to make a phone call called their stockbroker?" Far from being facetious, she was making an obvious but very important point. When the stakes are high, only one thing matters: love. No one is concerned about their weight or the way they look. They aren't upset that life isn't perfect. they aren't fretting about high taxes, the liberals or conservatives, previous conflicts, disputes with neighbors, or a lack of parking. They don't care about the rates of return on their investment portfolio. They aren't focused on any of their grievances.
Indeed, the only thing that matters, when it really matters, is love. The question is, "Why do we treat life as if it doesn't really matter right now?"
On the flip side, we're more careful to evaluate each situation before saying yes. When asked if you can do something, you should ask yourself two questions. First, "Is this something I have to do?" And second, "Is this something I want to do?" I you don't answer yes to at least one of these questions, you'll probably learn to say no more often. In the process, you'll begin to create more time for those things that really matter. After all, what's "bigger" than time itself?
One of my favorite descriptions of life is that it's just "one mistake after another with a little time in between." Despite its humor, this is a pretty accurate way of seeing things. If you think about it, its true. We make mistakes, we (hopefully) learn from them; we make adjustments and move on. At some point, there will be another mistake, and so forth. In the meantime, everyone else is going through the same process. Your parents are making mistakes, as are your friends, neighbors, children, coworkers, and everyone else. What about the Big Stuff: Finding Strength and Moving Forward When the Stakes Are High (Don't Sweat the Small Stuff Series) Overview

Experiencing Grief ReviewMy pastor gave this book to me after my son died. After reading it, I HAD to purchase additional copies to give away. After the death of a close friend or family member, there are so many feelings we go through, and this book describes and addresses all of them I went through! Even one I didn't realize, from my Father's passing two years prior to reading this.
It gives the reader understanding of tumultuous feelings of loss, regret, guilt, AND release from any guilt, plus encouragement for the future. I highly recommend this book for yourself, a family member or friend; it will be one of the best things you could do.Experiencing Grief Overview

Glad No Matter What: Transforming Loss and Change into Gift and Opportunity ReviewBefore reading this book I have to admit that I didn't know SARK from shinola, despite the fact that she has sold millions of books. I am so impressed with this work because not only is she exceptionally creative, she's also refreshingly authentic in her writing. Unlike so many self-help/spiritual growth authors who tend to position themselves on some pulpit of superiority (i.e., I've got it all solved), SARK openly admits there are times when she herself backslides into less than optimal feelings and behaviors. The truth is I just loved her candor, and more importantly, after experiencing the death of my three closest friends this year I found great value in the many innovative and practical transformative tools that she shares in this book.
Now that I've finished reading it, I must admit I feel dumbfounded as to why I'd never come across SARK's work in the past, as it truly is fabulous in so many respects. Based on the quality of this book, I'll definitely be considering other titles she's written.
Here's one of many excellent passages in "Glad No Matter What":
"If we do not allow ourselves to feel or express our emotions, they will get larger or louder of may go into our bodies and present themselves as some kind of medical condition. Feelings are meant to be in motion. E-Motion. Feelings are made to be expressed. You've probably heard: "If you can feel it, you can heal it." And this is true - yet many try to stop feeling before the healing takes place, especially if it seems like a "bad" or difficult feeling."Glad No Matter What: Transforming Loss and Change into Gift and Opportunity Overview

Messages & Miracles: Extraordinary Experiences of the Bereaved ReviewShirley, my soulmate and the woman I was to marry, passed away in July of 1994. Shortly after that I experienced various forms of communication from her. Since, at the time, I was not aware of the phenomenon of After Death Communication, I felt that I was losing my mind. I went to see several grief therapists regarding these experiences but their responses only seemed to confirm that something was not right with my state of mind.
Recently, however, I happened to receive a copy of MESSAGES AND MIRACLES and the book re-assured me that I was not going crazy. According to Dr. L. LaGrand's intensive research in this area, thousands of people have had similar ADC experiences...and all of a sudden I did not feel so alone. The information that the author presents definately supports the comment that was once made by Dr. Wayne Dyer: "We are not human beings having a spiritual experience...rather we are spiritual beings having a human experience".
Understandingly, those who have never experienced the transformational power of an ADC may be quite skeptical. But then how do you describe the smell of a rose to someone who has never smelled one?
On the other hand, if I am going crazy given my ADC experiences, I am proud to be in such great company as Dr. LaGrand and the people that he refers to in his book.Messages & Miracles: Extraordinary Experiences of the Bereaved Overview

The One Year Book of Hope (One Year Books) ReviewAuthor Nancy Guthrie understands the depth of grief, but she also knows the power of hope. In this book, she comes alongside readers to share her experiences, thoughts, and most importantly, her belief in a merciful God. Each page is like a gentle hug, as her words breathe life from the precious promises of the Bible.
The book is arranged around fifty-two themes, which encourages daily reading for a year. However, the author's sensitivity to sorrow has led her not to include days of the week or dates with each section. She realizes that grief has no timetable and therefore her words may be read slowly or with greater urgency, depending on the individual
There is a gradual progression in these pages, as the first theme acknowledges the brokenhearted and the last entry is on letting go. Throughout the book, the reader will come face to face with different aspects of the healing process while their attention is always directed toward a vibrant hope in God.
However, the heart of this book is the heart of the author. Her personal acquaintance with grief makes her compassionately qualified to minister to others. She has sought answers and comfort, and through her experiences, she has also learned a great deal about hoping in the Lord. Her spiritual insights, which were gleaned from serious study of the Scriptures, lead readers through the darkness of sorrow to the light of victory. Her words are trustworthy because she has been tried in the furnace of affliction.
Grace, beauty, and truth flow from these pages. Although sorrow is never trivialized, the author consistently causes the reader to look ever onward and upward to the Source of all comfort and hope. And that's the perfect way to spend every day of the year! -- Joyce Handzo, Christian Book Previews.com

Wrapped in Mourning: The Gift of Life and Donor Family Trauma (Series in Trauma and Loss) ReviewI won't lie. This book was really hard to read at some points. Some of the stories in here are my nightmare. That my donor families would not feel at peace with their decision to donate...well, that's almost too much to bear.
But, the truth is the truth. As a transplant patient, I feel it is my responsibility to look at all of the realities that encircle donation, not just the ones that make me feel good. I learned things about grief and donor family perspectives that I never knew. Hearing about the mistakes in the hospital that cause such confusion and pain for donor families made me just sick. I know this system all too well to not know that those things are true. To have those things happen when you are struggling with death is simply tragic.
I am very glad I read this book. It only increased my appreciation for the two families that donated their loved ones lungs to save me from my own early death. But after reading this book, I see so much more clearly that, often, it's not about my near death at all. It's really about a family's loss. I think us recipients can lose sight of this simple fact very easily.
Thank you for writing this book.

Realms of Light: Clairvoyant Experiences of Life After Death ReviewRealms of Light exposes a world I didn't know existed. Laurie's stories about people she knew that she saw traveling into realms filled with radiant light after they had "died" were believable amd wondrous. She tells remarkable stories in a humble unassuming way.
It's hard to find words to say how I felt reading her books. There's a child-like innocence to the world she describes. It pulled me back to the innocence of my belief in God and the love I had for Jesus and Mary as a young child. She describes miracles as the daily event. This is the stuff that saints are made of yet she is an ordinary person, a concert pianist and composer.
Her words carry a power that triggers memories of events or people that need attention for forgiveness or healing.
After I finished Realms of Light I ordered The Spiritual Life of Plants and Animals. I absorbed it in one sitting. It made praying real and opened my eyes to the inner life of plants and animals. I'm amazed how aware all of life is. After reading these books I will never be the same. My life is changed.

Remembering Mother, Finding Myself: A Journey of Love and Self-Acceptance ReviewWhat a blessing this book has been for me! My mother passed away recently after a long illness. Our relationship was often turbulent and my childhood and teen years were sometimes difficult. I spent a lot of my time being angry with her but this book really opened my eyes as to the struggle my mother had just with trying to survive on a day to day basis. I saw my mother in this book and discovered the answers to many questions that baffled me about the kind of person she was. Loving and laughing one minute then crying and accusing the next minute. Now I know why. Thank you, Patricia, for writing this book. My mom and I had many good times too. She had a great sense of humour and I cherish that part of my mother. Your book is a precious gift.Remembering Mother, Finding Myself: A Journey of Love and Self-Acceptance Overview

Final Gifts: Understanding the Special Awareness, Needs, and Communications of the Dying Review....read this book!
Over the past few years, when faced with the information that someone I'd known was dying, I did - nothing. Retreating, I was terrified of my own mortality and of what I might do if I were around someone who was dying. Would I say the wrong thing or nothing at all? Would I cry, or do something to inadvertently hurt them? What is dying like? This book is great as a comforting instruction manual on what happens, what to do, and what not to do.
It begins with information about what happens to the body when it is in the process of dying, then moves into experiences the authors have had in dealing with people who are dying, or whose loved ones are dying. They have helpful information throughout the book for those, like me, who were unsure about what to say or do.
They include individual stories about messages people send when they are approaching death and how not to miss them; seeing people who have already died and what that may mean; symbolic dreams and how to let the dreamer find the meaning; choosing a time to die (not by suicide); waiting for a person to arrive or an event to happen.
Family and friends often ignore this precious information. It seems illogical, far out, too much like stories about abduction by aliens. We brush them off as hallucinations, caused by denial or possibly drug-induced.
When I first heard volunteers, nurses and others who work in hospice tell stories of people who have similar Nearing Death Experiences (not to be confused with "Near Death Experiences"), I was dubious. However, in my readings and hospice volunteer work, I find that these stories are universal, timeless and not as new age-y as I'd thought. We've been ignoring these wonderfully soothing stories of how people die, because for years we've moved birthing and dying out of the family and into hospitals. We are beginning to move them back.
If you've lost a loved one, are dealing with someone who is dying (yourself or someone else), if you avoid visiting friends who are dying or if you're struggling with your own awareness that someday you will die, please read this book. It will put your mind at ease.Final Gifts: Understanding the Special Awareness, Needs, and Communications of the Dying Overview
