New Testament Theology: Many Witnesses, One Gospel ReviewWith the massive amount of religious books being published these days, it would be helpful to know, as a minister, what to buy and what not to buy. This book is a definite buy! It has proven to be helpful to me in my preaching, teaching, and research as I have served as a minister in a local Protestant congregation. I.H. Marshall is one of the best biblical scholars of our time and this is perhaps his magnum opus.
Basically he goes through each section of each document of the New Testament relating to his readers the theological themes found therein. Thus, when preaching or teaching a passage, all you would have to do is open this book up to the appropriate page and get some helpful insights (after you have done the hard work of mulling over the text yourself of course!).
In case you are concerned about the investment, understand two things. Since the author is I.H. Marshall, this book is 1) Evangelical and 2) thoroughly researched.
This is no willy-nilly, off-the-cuff work; it is is a great book and a must have for those who minister in the church!New Testament Theology: Many Witnesses, One Gospel Overview

Jon Courson's Application Commentary: New Testament ReviewJon Courson combines scholarly analysis with a broad and deep knowledge of Old Testament Types and Symbolism to breathe a new vitality into the New Testament Good News. The common theme is the Gospel of Grace, whereby Christians respond to Jesus' sacrificial love on the cross by inviting Him into their hearts and letting Him finish the work by changing them from the inside out. His self-deprecating and personal style is not only humorous and readable but also timely and pertinent to the struggles we face in our lives. I highly recommend this commentary for those Christians who are striving for maturity in their Christian walk.Jon Courson's Application Commentary: New Testament Overview

Paul for Everyone: 1 Corinthians ReviewI have read a lot of N T Wright but never a commentary. I purchased this little commentary on 1 Corinthians for a series I am teaching through the book using very technical commentaries. I feel like I have found a real treasure. Wright is a world class scholar but this series is written for anyone - even a brand new Christian - to understand. I am sure I will purchase all of this series. No one will be disappointed if they invest in Wright's successful attempt to explain the Bible in a way that anyone can understand and enjoy. Practical, easy to understand, true to the text, but still exposing the profound message of Paul's letter to the Corinthians.Paul for Everyone: 1 Corinthians Overview

Speaking Truth In Love ReviewSpeaking Truth In Love is the lastest book by David Powlison, a faculty member at Westminister Theological Seminary and The Christian Counseling & Educational Foundation. In his own words, it is, "a book on how we are to live together." Although primarily directed at pastors and counselors, there is much here to be savored by every child of God. Indeed, an emphasis of the book is that speaking truth in love, wisdom, and grace into another person's life is both the privilege and responsibility for every Christian, not just the "professionals" or the "trained."
There are seventeen chapters, which are really separate essays all looking at differing facets of counseling, or "loving another person well" as Powlison puts it.
Chapter 1 is an extended reflection of Psalm 119, beautifully portraying it as the cry of a faithful heart toward God. It is worth the price of the book for anyone struggling through a trial or helping another.
Chapter 2 talks about the need to face the truth of our rebellious flesh, while chapter 3 talks of hearing the music of the gospel. Chapter 4-8 deal with various practical steps of preparation, listening, and questioning, while chapter 9 specifically deals with gently handling people who have already been immersed in the false psychologies of the world.
Chapter 10 starts looking at a more global emphasis, challenging pastors (and all) to consider that most of the "ministry of the Word" that Christ actually did was what we would now term private and small-group counseling, and not preaching sermons. Chapter 11 looks at how counseling should fit into the ministry of the church, and chapter 12 looks specifically at how the nature of prayer fits into counseling in the church.
The last chapters look at pastoral counseling, women in counseling, when to refer, where to train, and lastly a guiding doctrinal statement for Biblical counseling.
This is a rewarding book written by a wise servant of God, giving insight and direction on both the nature and the challenges the church faces in fulfilling our mandate on speaking truth in love to each other.

Letters of John, The ReviewBurge's commentary finds a nice niche between the more devotional based commentaries of Barclay and the highly technical works by Marshall and Smalley. While the author does a nice job of bringing in the relevant scholarly work when appropriate, he doesn't overwhelm the reader with it. His ability to work with his own translation of the text and to organize it in a way that the reader can clearly understand may be the real strength of the book. Several times I found that in his commentary on the text, Burge untangled the somewhat clumsy NIV translation in a way that was significantly more clear and which seemed truer to the original Greek. Additionally, Burge's willingness to remind the reader of the specific context which prompted John's letters helps keep one focused on what the letters are in response to. This emphasis on original context makes reading the letters much more understandable.
The NIV Application commentary series is organized around a three part approach to understanding a particular book: first understanding the text as it was written for the culture it was to be received in, second bridging the ancient context to a modern one and third applying the principles of the text to today's world. Burge follows this outline well but I found the application portions a bit weak at times, as if the author was more comfortable with the text in ancient times than in applying it today. This drawback was relatively minor and only occasionally detracted from the commentary as a whole. More often the author either limited his comments to within his personal experience as a pastor or to asked insightful questions that challenged the reader to look at the modern church with a critical eye in the light of John's exhortations.
I would recommend this book for serious students of the Bible, Bible study leaders and pastor/preachers with limited time. Those seeking a more devotional approach would likely be better served by Barclay while those looking to do scholarly work should refer to Smalley, Brown and Marshall (all well referenced in Burge's work).Letters of John, The Overview

Sharpen Your Discernment ReviewA wonderful book that considers many areas, not all, that a Spirit-filled believer should and would be concerned about! If you want to get a biblical grasp of how discernment works, this book is for you. What I like about this pentecostal perspective of discernment is his grounding in the Word of God, not emotions. He convinces you that you can move with the Spirit of God and be scripturally grounded. If you are seeing visions, etc. and they don't line up with the Word, then guess where they are coming from. Yes, it can be that simple! An especially helpful, insightful and prophetic part of the book is the "Sharpening Your Discernment" chapter, subsection Discernment and Charity. He describes what Christian love (agape) is based on what the Lord says and not the current "soulish" luv! Compromising with the truth and being a "peacekeeper" for the sake of ecumenism or unity is not love. Jesus was a "Peacemaker" who sets the example, along with the rest of the Word. Buy this book, pray while reading this book, and especially, be guided by the Word of God and the Spirit while reading this book and you will advance against the kingdom of this world!Sharpen Your Discernment Overview

The Gift of Church: How God Designed the Local Church to Meet Our Needs as Christians ReviewJim Samra has written an excellent book on why Christians need to re-look at their attitudes and involvement with the church. Despite all of the Church's failings, Church is God's idea, His creation, and His primary way of working in this world.
The chapter of the Church being "God in Concert" is beautiful. The entire book shows how God works in and through us being in community - both to be Christ in the earth and to deepen our relationship with God through others. Every excuss used to avoid church is addressed.
There are many things that I would have changed if I wrote the book. I would have emphasized that belonging and actively participating in 'church' isn't optional but a biblical mandate. Samra's book is primarily about what the church does for us instead of what the church means and does for God. However that lens reflects the view of our culture, at least in the Western world. Perhaps that view will motivate more people to go back to church and if so I laud the effort.
Samra gives two extensive chapters on what the church should be and do. He leaves out missions and evangelism completely. Again, I think that omission is because of his effort to appeal to what church does for us instead of what God intends the church to do for others. However those points aside this is a great book to get people thinking about their need to be in church. As Samra said, this is a book of ideas, not practice. This book is a great gift to give to fellow believers who think it is enough to believe or fellowship via a TV program, err TV preacher. The Gift of Church: How God Designed the Local Church to Meet Our Needs as Christians Overview

The Glory of Heaven: The Truth about Heaven, Angels and Eternal Life ReviewThe excellence of "The Glory of Heaven" is that it dispels error and explains truth without going beyond scripture, without crossing over into speculation as other writers on this topic do. In addition to using scripture to rebut popular New Age ideas about the afterlife, MacArthur utterly demolishes Christendom's false notions, like soul sleep (no immediate presence with God) and purgatory (post-mortem suffering). He even challenges common evangelical theory about the place of "Abraham's bosom." The occupants of heavens are described, both angels and glorified humans, with the distinction made between sanctification and glorification. Finally, MacArthur clarifies seemingly contradictory verses about the nature of the place of heaven, such as some that imply a temple in heaven and others that do not. MacArthur envisions an eternal heaven that transcends space and time rather than one that is just a different name for the New Earth. Because of MacArthur's scripture-laden academic manner, this book may seem a bit tedious for those who prefer conversational or devotional styles, but at least it's faithful to the Bible. (Also, MacArthur attaches 4 appendices that are more devotional pieces written by Boston, Spurgeon and Ryle.)The Glory of Heaven: The Truth about Heaven, Angels and Eternal Life Overview

Worldliness: Resisting the Seduction of a Fallen World ReviewAny book on worldliness faces a difficult challenge. The author who takes too firm a stand on issues may slip into legalism while the author who takes too lax a stand may slip into the worldliness he seeks to avoid. The discerning author will need to tread the line, being careful to say no more than Scripture does while still dealing effectively with issues of contemporary importance. Because such a book is long overdue I was pleased to see that Worldliness would be coming from C.J. Mahaney and those whom John Piper affectionately refers to as "his gang."
Mahaney handles the introductions in this book, beginning with a reflection called "Is This Verse in Your Bible?" He biblically defines worldliness saying that this world we're not supposed to love is "the organized system of human civilization that is actively hostile to God and alienated from God." Worldliness is a love for this fallen world and, specifically, "to gratify and exalt oneself to the exclusion of God." Mahaney is careful to point out that worldliness is not extrinsic to us but intrinsic, inhabiting our fallen hearts. Worldliness does not consist of outward actions (though such actions can certainly be evidence of worldliness) but instead is a heart attitude that rebels against God. The antidote to worldliness is the cross of Christ. "Only through the power of the cross of Christ can we successfully resist the seduction of the fallen world." Worldliness dulls our affections for Christ and distracts our hearts from him. Hence it is so serious "because Christ is so glorious." While resisting worldliness is the theme of the book, its aim is to exalt Christ.
Each of the subsequent chapters is meant to build on this foundation. In "God, My Heart, and Media," Craig Cabaniss discusses issues related to the pervasiveness of media in our society. Cabaniss grounds the discussion in grace, saying "any discussion of biblical obedience, including entertainment guidelines, must spring from a robust understanding of grace." He offers the fair warning that we must guard our hearts as the conscience is prone to become dull over time. As we relax our standards and as we engage in ungodly media habits, our hearts may slowly become dulled to the things of Christ. He warns against the temptation to see anyone with stricter standards as us as legalistic while seeing anyone with more lenient standards as worldly. He encourages us to view proactively, to view accountably and to view gratefully.
In "God, My Heart, and Music," Bob Kauflin takes on the subject of music, beginning with the fact that music was God's idea long before it crossed the mind of any human. He states that "listening to music without discernment and godly intent reveals a heart willing to flirt with the world." Saying that music itself is amoral (there are no holy or unholy harmonies or melodies) he warns that music does convey three things: content, context and culture. The Christian will need to discern what is being communicated through the music he listens to in order to ensure that he is not, perhaps inadvertently, absorbing messages that would conflict with his Christian faith. Kauflin closes with some good thoughts on using music for the glory of God.
To this point I felt the book was excellent. Though in a work of this nature each of the chapters could be little more than a cursory introduction to what might have been a book-length project, I felt the authors did a great job of teaching, exhorting and illustrating while avoiding those perilous extremes of worldliness and legalism. Unfortunately I felt that Worldliness soon stalled out badly. And this is where the job of a book reviewer gets tough. What do you do when you like an author (or a group of authors) but just don't like the book they've produced?
The fourth chapter, entitled "God, My Heart, and Stuff" was authored by Dave Harvey. While I haven't ever met Dave (at least to my recollection) I have benefited from reading his book When Sinners Say 'I Do'. From my experience in reading that book I had high hopes for his contribution to this one. I was disappointed. While he addressed the heart so well in his book on marriage, in this case I found little of real depth. The next chapter, from the pen of C.J. Mahaney is titled "God, My Heart, and Clothes" and discusses the issue of modesty. It had very little application to men beyond stating that this is an issue for pastors and fathers to consider. Ultimately he provided a lot of quotes and a few good thoughts on modesty and encouraged women to dress properly. Both of the book's appendices carried on the theme, with "A Modesty Heart Check" and "Considering Modesty on Your Wedding Day." But this was a superficial look at modesty and one that offered little that we haven't heard C.J. and others say before. It did not take the issue of modesty to men (where modesty of heart and intention comes into play) but instead serves as just another encouragement to girls to check their neckline and test their hemline. Jeff Purswell concludes with a chapter titled "How to Love the World" in which he reminds the reader "To impart biblical discernment in areas that increasingly escape the scrutiny of the evangelical world so intent on 'relating to the culture.'" He offers a summary of redemptive history in the grid of Creation, Fall, Redemption and Consummation and gives the reader a three-part charge: to enjoy the world, to engage the world and to evangelize the world. These last three chapters and the appendices were uniformly disappointing to me. I couldn't help but feel that they represented somewhat passionless efforts. Missing was the depth and intensity I'd expect from a book authored (or edited) by Mahaney.
Had I been hoping that this book might be another Humility or The Cross Centered Life, Worldliness would have been quite a disappointment. Though it got off to a strong start, it quickly tapered out. In the end it just seemed shallow--a work of far less depth and offering far less application than I'm accustomed to seeing from a book with Mahaney's name on the cover. It came across as a cobbled-together collection of essays of unequal value. I almost feel I should apologize when I say, it just isn't that good of a book.Worldliness: Resisting the Seduction of a Fallen World Overview

The Belief of Catholics ReviewTremendous source to explain the Catholic Church by one of its greatest writers who knew it from the outside as well as the inside. Msgr. Ronald A. Knox, an Anglican convert to Catholicism, influenced GK Chesterton, Bishop Fulton Sheen and countless converts among others, with his logic, historical expertise, and ability to explain Catholicism and its most challenging issues to the uninitiated and Catholics alike. Starting with the current agnosticsm (then as today), he proceeds to philosophical proof of Divine intellect and will, and then he traces the development of oral tradition from the Apostles and the early Church to the present Roman Church. With wit and incisive facts, he expertly explains the paradox of free will versus submission to an authority, Dogma versus doctrine versus ritual, and the Catholic view versus the "world view". The careful reader will gain an appreciation into both sides of the issues presented. IMHO there is no better English explanation of Catholicism in 250 pages. The Belief of Catholics Overview

Keys to the Deeper Life Review"I believe we are under positive spiritual obligation to pray effectively till the present veil is torn away and the face of God is seen again by believing men," Tozer writes.
There is an irony that A.W. Tozer is more prolific and widely-read today than when he was alive. How I wish I could sit at his elbow and ask him about today's events, the future of the church, the coming King...In some ways, he answers those questions in "Keys to the Deeper Life."
Smith Wigglesworth once referred to the gifts of salvation, baptism of the Holy Spirit, and the deeper life as "Good, better, best." I think Tozer would agree.
Never afraid to speak truth, the first chapter sets the tone for the enitre book: "Leaning into the wind". Just like him. Eschewing the hypocritical, the false glory found in man's praise, and the shallow life, Tozer puts the trumpet to his lips to issue a clear call of the Spirit, to engage God at a deeper level. He urges believers to "1.)surrender, 2.)ask, 3.) obey, and 4.)believe in order to recieve the fullness of God, the Holy Spirit.
In the chapter, "Touching Heaven in Prayer", Tozer writes:
"What then shall we do?
We must deny self, take up the cross and count ourselves expendable.
We must cease to exercise the world's judgements and try to think God's thoughts after Him.
We must rekon ourselves dead to gain and glory and allow ourselves to become inextricably invloved with the cross of Christ and the high honor of God."
Putting God first and ourselves dead last.
What a concept.
Sounds like Christ.Keys to the Deeper Life Overview

The Purpose-Driven Life Journal ReviewIf you're a fan of the "Purpose Driven Life" series OR are simply searching for a good Christian journal to put your thoughts down and stimulate your spiritual thinking, consider this book. A few of the things I liked about it:
-there's plenty of space for writing down your thoughts
-inspiring passages on most pages
-decent questions to ponder
I guess you could consider this as a kind of "workbook" too- not simply a place to jot down what's on your mind as the questions point you to specific areas. A decent little journal, I doubt most will be disappointed. Also recommend Finding Happiness in a Frustrating World to help get one's life goals on track. The Purpose-Driven Life Journal Overview

An Introduction to the New Testament: Contexts, Methods & Ministry Formation ReviewDavid A. deSilva has risen among the ranks of modern New Testament scholars as a specialist in socio-rhetorical interpretation. In addition to his position as professor of New Testament and Greek at Ashland Theological Seminary (Ohio), he has authored Honor, Patronage, Kinship and Purity: Unlocking New Testament Culture (the revision of his Ph.D. dissertation from Emory University), Introducing the Apocrypha, the socio-rhetorical commentary on Hebrews titled Perseverance in Gratitude, and several articles and essays. His latest volume, An Introduction to the New Testament: Contexts, Methods & Ministry Formation, is a hefty contribution to the field of New Testament studies.
In this introduction, deSilva attempts to merge the critical study of Scriptures with the devotional use for pastors and teachers. He clearly states his objectives in his preface as equipping leaders to "(1) more fully engage the critical and prayerful study of the New Testament, and (2) more reliably discern the direction the Spirit would give through these texts for nurturing disciples and building communities of faith that reflect the heart and character of their Lord" (p. 20). Three presuppositions guide deSilva's approach which include being text-centered rather than phenomenon-centered, special attention to the full range of interpretative strategies, and focusing on each text with its direct application for ministry formation. These concerns are reflected in his treatment of each respective book of the New Testament. Along with the typical introductory issues of authorship, date, audience, and purpose he includes a brief commentary of the contents, excurses focusing on specific interpretative approaches (e.g., rhetorical, sociological, feminist, textual criticisms), and he includes application for ministry settings.
The paradigm he employs is the model of "socio-rhetorical interpretation" developed by Vernon K. Robbins (p. 23). He clarifies that socio-rhetorical interpretation is not a new method, but rather it serves as a model for analysis that encourages interpreters to view the text through the full spectrum of exegetical tools. The text of Scripture is like a tapestry of many interwoven textures, and therefore one must explore the various textures of the text. First, he describes the "inner texture," which involves the use of textual criticism, lexical and grammatical analysis, literary analysis, rhetorical criticism, and narrative criticism (p. 24). The second textual level, called "intertexture," attempts to explore how the author utilizes other texts like the Old Testament, Jewish writings, and Greco-Roman writings. The third area of textual investigation relates to the "social and cultural texture" that seeks to locate the historical influences and conditions relating to how the audience would have received the text. Finally, the aims, intentions, and agendas of the biblical writers are examined against the social political climate that gave rise to the texts with an investigation of the "ideological texture" (p. 25). Socio-rhetorical interpretation helpfully integrates a number of exegetical strategies and constitutes a solid interpretative approach. However, some fads that develop in biblical studies are often overly biased, short lived, and exhibit a tendency to marginalize most traditional and conservative interpretations. Just because some exegetical strategies may yield surprisingly new insights, one must continue to compare critically the merits of such interpretations.
Among the throng of New Testament Introductions, deSilva's contribution provides a number of distinctive aspects. His introduction constitutes the first drawn from a thoroughly socio-rhetorical perspective. As such, deSilva consistently offers sociological and cultural insights into the situation behind the text. Consequently, the first 150 pages are devoted to establishing the historical, social, and political environment that produced the New Testament. DeSilva manages to increase the value of his introduction by incorporating sections highlighting various exegetical techniques. Each section focuses on a specific "exegetical skill" (e.g., Historical criticism, Narrative criticism, Rhetorical criticism, Social-Scientific criticism, Intertextuality, Feminist criticism, and Postcolonial criticism) and he demonstrates how that particular skill is used when interpreting a particular passage. DeSilva also succeeds in striking a balance between the academic and practical study of the New Testament. After discussing the technical aspects of authorship, date, genre, structure, he carefully includes a section on the way each book contributes to ministry formation. His work on Hebrews and Revelation were particularly well written.
His work exhibits the marks of critical scholarship evident in both his organization and treatment of the New Testament books. He organizes his chapters in a manner that not only reflects scholarly awareness but also reveals his own position on critical issues. He places Mark prior to Matthew. He groups related works together in successive chapters (i.e., Acts follows Luke, and the Johannine Epistles for John's gospel). He arranges the Pauline epistles according to a chronological rather than an canonical order (Galatians, Thessalonians correspondences, Corinthian correspondences, Romans, Philippians, Philemon, Colossians and Ephesians, the Pastorals). His treatment regarding authorship also reflects his critical affinities. He concludes that Lazarus is a better candidate for the Beloved Disciple and favors the community hypothesis. DeSilva's discussion of Ephesians comes across slightly one sided in the arguments against Pauline authorship. However, he maintains a number of conservative positions concerning a number of Pauline writings. In a way, this Introduction represents the current and often conflicted state of NT scholarship.
All in all, deSilva has produced a very comprehensive and user friendly New Testament Introduction for seminarians. The book itself has an attractive cover, layout, pictures, sidebars, and provides a useful all-in-one source. Students will benefit from the massive examples of varying exegetical techniques and pastoral sensitivity However, it is not very portable due to its size and weight. The work represents a commitment to evangelical principles, but students may want to compare his conclusions with other Introductions and commentaries. As such, I believe this book makes an excellent companion to the New Testament Introduction by Carson and Moo. For the most part, deSilva has managed to produce a lasting contribution to the field of New Testament studies.

The Hayford Bible Handbook ReviewEven if you are not a Charismatic Believer, do not hesitate to check out this book. I have never known Pastor Hayford to be "heavy-handed" in his Charismatic theology. I own a copy, and it is positively outstanding! There is so much excellent information, very well organized and effectively presented. I would strongly recommend this as a resource for any Christian who wants to gain a deeper understanding of the Scriptures and who desires to apply these truths in his daily walk. The Hayford Bible Handbook Overview
