Introducing the Practice of Ministry ReviewProfessor Kathleen Cahalan has offered readers a smart book on Practice and on Ministry. While it is titled an introduction this book is comprehensive. She defines current conversations in a fresh and inviting framework that is original and foundational at the same time. The heart of her teaching is the last chapter where she presents a readable and contemporary belief in the Trinity as the dynamism of practice of ministry. This book is an invitation to vocation for all disciples. She defines ministry in service of disciples. The charisms of the Holy Spirit are not separate gifts, but enfold us in deep, abiding relationships. We imitate Christ and are literally Christ for others in our very own world.
If a book can be a verb, this is one. I have read it twice and it continues to change not only my thinking, values and attitudes, but actions that become a habit. It is in the practice that we become by grace what God is by nature.
I wish I had this book when I worked in the Archdiocese of Indianapolis's Education Office, or when I was on the Board of St. Meinrad Seminary, or Weston School of Theology Board. I would recommend this book as a place to start for all who have been Baptized. Vocation has a voice through this book.Introducing the Practice of Ministry Overview

Life on the Vine: Cultivating the Fruit of the Spirit ReviewThis book is filled with fresh, insightful comments on the relationship between the Christian faith and our American culture. Kenneson's eyes see dangers to the faith that most of the Church misses; he also offers some helpful theological understandings of the Church. My only fear about this book is that not enough people will read it; whether everyone should agree with Kenneson's conclusions is beside the point: The Church would do well to devote energy to the type of discernment Kenneson undertakes in Life on the Vine. The question Kenneson poses is not often asked, but is essential to Christians of every sort: What does it mean to be Christian where and when I live? If you are a North American Christian, please read this book.Life on the Vine: Cultivating the Fruit of the Spirit Overview

Hurt: Inside the World of Today's Teenagers (Youth, Family, and Culture) ReviewMy roommate was given this book a few months back. Since I work with the Jr. High group at church, I figured I might find it helpful, so picked it up. What I found was a thought provoking book on today's youth sub-culture.
The book focuses most on high school students or mid-adolescents as the author calls them. His premise is that adults have started abandoning kids early in life, making the transition from childhood to adulthood a longer and harder process. Teens draw away from adults, not as much out of rebellion, but to cope. The majority of this book is devoted to various aspects of teen life and how it develops and plays out. Chapters such as Peers, School, Family, and Sports hit the nail on the head. And I'll confess I found some shocking stuff in the chapters on Sex, Ethics, and the Party Scene.
I did have some problems with this book. At times, it seemed to go too far into the self-esteem trap. Yes, we need to care for kids, but we also need to acknowledge that not everyone is created equal, something that seemed to be over looked at times. Still, most his examples were of things going too far in the other direction, which makes his points very valid.
Another area was the various ethics discussions. While many of these chapters were eye opening for me, he never addressed ways to teach morals. In fact, he seems to blame adults for problems such as cheating but never blames the kids or discuss how the problem should be addressed.
The last two chapters are a discussion of ways to solve the problem of abandonment, but they seem to be impractical and fall short. City wide meetings for everyone involved with youth? What we really need is a radical shift in our entire culture. Not that I'm exactly sure how to go about doing that, either. So I'm probably little better then he is.
On the whole, this book is an eye-opener about the problems today's high schoolers face. While not perfect, it should be read by anyone who cares about today's teens. Maybe then we can come up with workable solutions to let them know we do care.Hurt: Inside the World of Today's Teenagers (Youth, Family, and Culture) Overview

Student Ministry for the 21st Century: Transforming Your Youth Group Into A Vital Student Ministry ReviewThis book is definitely worth reading, especially if you're looking to change from a traditional approach to a more relational/purpose-drive approach. It starts out a little slow, but the later chapters provided some helpful ideas.
I would recommend Purpose Driven Youth Ministry by Doug Field over this book, however. Most of the ideas in Student Ministry for the 21st Century are also in Purpose Driven Youth Ministry.Student Ministry for the 21st Century: Transforming Your Youth Group Into A Vital Student Ministry Overview

The Heart of a Servant Leader: Letters from Jack Miller ReviewThe late Jack Miller was a man wonderfully used by God to help the American church rediscover the impact of the Gospel of Grace. The ripples of his ministry continue to have impact today. This book, lovingly compiled and edited by Jack's daughter Barbara Miller Juliani, contains many of Jack Miller's letters to all kinds of people- ministers, elders, counselors, and just ordinary Christians. His focus is always Christ and His grace. His message is always clear, humble and loving, and yet very convicting and powerful. These letters were for me, models of applying the Gospel to a lot of situations. Be warned, these letters will stretch you and expose your own self-righteousness and self-protective patterns.
The book is divided into sections by theme: Motivation for Serving: The Glory of God; The Basics of Serving: Faith, Humility, and Prayer; Perservering in Serving; and Encouragment. I found myself frequently underlining paragraphs in these letters and have already emailed some quotes to some friends for their encouragement. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in ministry, growing in their faith, or just how the Gospel is for Christians and non-Christians alike! The Heart of a Servant Leader: Letters from Jack Miller Overview

Zero to Sixty-60 Principles and Practices for Leading a Growing Church ReviewOne of the most common barriers to church leadership is a lack of intentional self-development on the part of the pastor. No organization can outgrow its leader.
When a pastor stops growing personally, the sermons are stale, the passion for ministry wanes, the staff and volunteers fall into maintenance mode and the church stops thriving.
Two of the best ways to circumvent this growth barrier are 1) to read books that will stretch you and 2) to seek out mentors you admire.
With Zero To Sixty, Bob has left you no excuse for shirking self-development. Not only is this a book that will challenge you, forcing you to think through the hard issues of day-to-day ministry, but it is written as if Bob were sitting across a table from you, sharing his heartfelt lessons in person. In the following pages, you will gain practical truth and teaching, yes, but you will also gain something you might not expect - a mentor to walk you through those truths and teachings one step at a time.
Here's my advice to you, church leader. Don't simply read this book. Use it. Write in the margins. Note the points that stand out to you. Discuss the lessons and their application with your staff. Invite another church leader to lunch and share what you are learning. Drink this book in.

As Iron Sharpens Iron ReviewI have yet to be disappointed with anything written by Howard Hendricks. In this book, he does a superb job of presenting the tremendous worth and transforming power of a mentoring relationship between two men. While these principles would also apply to a woman-to-woman relationship, Hendricks is writing to provide support for the Christian men's movement "Promise Keepers."
There are two sections to this work: how to find a mentor, and how to be a mentor. Hendricks emphasizes there are many more men seeking mentors than there are men who are willing to be mentors. He discourages actually using the title of "mentor" when establishing such a supportive relationship, for fear it will intimate one of the parties. Instead, he promotes referring to the interaction as what would occur between two friends. Hendricks also describes how to spot a mentor or a protégé, then how to avoid common pitfalls of such an arrangement.
For anyone seeking to learn from a respected male friend, or for someone seeking to invest his life-lessons of experience in a younger man, this book is simply invaluable. As Iron Sharpens Iron Overview

Devotions for Ministry Wives ReviewI am one of the contributors to this book and could hardly wait for the book's release to read what the other women had written. I have been encouraged and helped by them.
Even in a hectic season or life, the 2-page devotionals are accessible and good for any woman who wants to deepen her faith.
I recommend the book especially to ministry women who have been put off by the negative angle that many books have toward our calling, that see our lives mainly from the perspective of difficulties that come our way. The writers of DEVOTIONS FOR MINSTRY WIVES don't gloss over problems, but their outlook is definitely that they are glad to be where God has placed them.
If no one has given this book to you yet, buy it for yourself!Devotions for Ministry Wives Overview

The Ministry Staff Member: A Contemporary, Practical Handbook to Equip, Encourage, and Empower ReviewThis is an excellent leadership book written in the context of local church ministry. Dr. Fagerstrom's thirty plus years in church ministry and leadership make him a perfectly prepared author for this book. The book is loaded with practical wisdom, how to's, and insights on the personalities and politics of everyday administration.
Along with his years of church leadership, Dr. Fagerstrom served for a time as the president of a seminary, which was associated with the university where I served at the time as president. We worked together on many projects and I can say without fear of exaggeration or reservation that he is a man of integrity, knows whereof he speaks in terms of ministry and leadership, and is, to grab a phrase, "a class act." He now serves as executive vice president for an internationally distributed denomination.
I recommend this book highly not only for church ministry staff members but for anyone in leadership. The Ministry Staff Member: A Contemporary, Practical Handbook to Equip, Encourage, and Empower Overview

Children Matter: Celebrating their Place in the Church, Family and Community ReviewAlthough this book is written by a group of educators it is one of the best books I have ever read on children's spirituality and show us with many examples how the faith community can nurture its youngest members. Children Matter emphasized relationships between people and encourages the church to welcome all children as valued participants in the people of God.
A wide range of examples from the Protestant traditions and drawing on the Bible, history and psychology to lay good foundations. The examples were excellent and evualated with strengths and weaknesses for all ages from toddler through grade school. The evidence of teaching is learning; how the children respond, the questions they ask, the attitudes they demonstrate in actual behavior and the way they use Scripture to inform their lives and decisions.
A wide ranges of examples were given from ancient times to the present. The book was exciting in the responses from the children. Anyone who works with children would find this an excellent tool, it has a great bibliography, footnotes, scripture list ---you couldn't ask for more.
It left me with a great sense of hope and urgency to give our teachers and parents great tools.
Imagine the faith journey with children as a pilgrimage or dance with God. Explore the contexts in which children live, make an informed and animated commitment to nurture a vibrant faith in your churchs youngest members. Theory and practice are interwoven ---if your church cares that children matter this is the book for you.Children Matter: Celebrating their Place in the Church, Family and Community Overview

The Godbearing Life: The Art of Soul Tending for Youth Ministry ReviewWithout seeming overdramatic, this is the book we who have been in youth ministry for awhile have been waiting for. Dean and Foster move right to the heart of the matter: youth workers are called first and foremost to be PASTORS to their students, not simply recreation directors. Skillfully blending scripture, theology, the social sciences, and personal experience, these practitioners offer both rich theory and application to assist youth workers in rethinking why we do youth ministry. In my opinion, this is the book that will most shape youth ministry in this postmodern era.The Godbearing Life: The Art of Soul Tending for Youth Ministry Overview

This Odd and Wondrous Calling: The Public and Private Lives of Two Ministers ReviewAt last there is a book about "what it's like to be a minister" and not a "how to do it right" book about ministry and it's written with candor and integrity. Lillian Daniel and Martin Copenhaver are both excellent writers in their own right and together they are the perfect writing duo to bring to light the realities of "This Odd and Wondrous Calling" that is parish ministry. I am now retired having been ordained 46 years ago and my wife and I both feel this is a book that should become required reading for every seminarian anticipating a career in parish ministry. Nowhere else will a "budding" clergy, female or male, find such a healthy and thoughtful reflection on the profession they are preparing to enter. And every lay person needs to read this book as well to learn something about themselves, they being "the church", as well as something about what their pastors experience. There is self-deprecating humor and honest self examination as these two dedicated professionals walk the reader through their professional experiences revealing both their foibles and the achievements that surprise them, but most of all they are not embarrassed to conclude that what they do is an "odd and wondrous calling" and not "a job."Bob Stout, Retired UCC MiinisterThis Odd and Wondrous Calling: The Public and Private Lives of Two Ministers Overview

Direct Hit: Aiming Real Leaders at the Mission Field ReviewFew in the North American church scene have as much experience with local church turnaround as Paul Borden. What makes Direct Hit so useful is that Borden addresses why turnaround is so often talked about, but so rarely achieved. He gives very clear rules about: the timing of turnaround, the role of pastors and leaders, using outside help, and the necessity of mission. Many congregations do not look to the deep issues behind why their church is the way it is. Not so with Direct Hit. Borden is up-front and passionate about his subject. A previous reviewer has put in this space a review of some other book about "Organic Church", not by Borden. There are a few typographical and syntactical errors here, but a lot fewer than his previous book Hit The Bullseye. The Appendices are worth the purchase price alone. Five stars.Direct Hit: Aiming Real Leaders at the Mission Field Overview
