Sharpen Your Discernment ReviewA wonderful book that considers many areas, not all, that a Spirit-filled believer should and would be concerned about! If you want to get a biblical grasp of how discernment works, this book is for you. What I like about this pentecostal perspective of discernment is his grounding in the Word of God, not emotions. He convinces you that you can move with the Spirit of God and be scripturally grounded. If you are seeing visions, etc. and they don't line up with the Word, then guess where they are coming from. Yes, it can be that simple! An especially helpful, insightful and prophetic part of the book is the "Sharpening Your Discernment" chapter, subsection Discernment and Charity. He describes what Christian love (agape) is based on what the Lord says and not the current "soulish" luv! Compromising with the truth and being a "peacekeeper" for the sake of ecumenism or unity is not love. Jesus was a "Peacemaker" who sets the example, along with the rest of the Word. Buy this book, pray while reading this book, and especially, be guided by the Word of God and the Spirit while reading this book and you will advance against the kingdom of this world!Sharpen Your Discernment Overview

The Essential 55: An Award-Winning Educator's Rules For Discovering the Successful Student in Every Child ReviewRon Clark teaches school. He has 55 rules of "engagement" for anything from good manners (Don't take the largest piece of pie, Always say Thank-You, Make Eye Contact) to rules of responsibility and deportment (Enter the field trip building silently, Do not talk in the movies, unwrap your candy before the film to keep from disturbing others.)
These rules teach his students to be polite and attentive, to understand if they don't hand in assignments, there will be consequences (even if the assignment is just a little blue card they have to return to him the next day.) But Ron is no martinet--he has weird rules (No Doritos, just because...and a funny story to make the rule amusing.) His War of the Onions against a sadly jealous fellow teacher is both hysterically funny and touching.
Ron Clark shows the world that kids anywhere can learn to be well-brought up and polite, that manners and rules help them succeed. He makes the very important point that a teacher is an important influence since he or she is with those kids for more time during the day than the parents.
This book is fun to read and is a great story. It is also a MUST-READ for any school teacher who wants to excel with their students and give them something of tremendous value to carry them through the rest of their lives with honor and grace--good manners and good behavior.
Bravo, Ron Clark! The Essential 55: An Award-Winning Educator's Rules For Discovering the Successful Student in Every Child Overview

The Compound Effect ReviewI'm embarrassed that I bought this book based on the other reviews. First note the book dimensions 7.3 x 5.3 x 0.7 inches. They made the book small to hide the lack of content. The first page has a place to add a name "This book is given to ________ because I care about you and your greater success". The last thing he writes on the last page is: "Write down five people you will give a copy of this book to" and then space for five names. Yes. it is that kind of book. In between the suggestions to buy more copies of the book is treacle borrowed from other "success" books. I don't think there is an original thought in the entire book. It all comes down to pay attention to what you are doing and make sure it furthers your goals. He didn't succeed in writing a very good book. Perhaps he will succeed in selling it. "Who Moved the Cheese" sold a lot of copies. The Compound Effect Overview

You're Not the Boss of Me: Brat-proofing Your Four- to Twelve-Year-Old Child ReviewI absolutely love this book and have been awaiting the release - well, I have not been disappointed! Betsy's advice in this book is consistent and right-on, as was her guidance from her first book. It's such a pleasure to have books that speak to the current challenges of parenting and give no-nonsense, straight forward advice as well as specific scenarios and scripts. Not only have I continually used her previous book for my personal parenting challenges, but repeatedly recommend it to my clients as well. The same is absolutely true of "You're Not the Boss..." I immediately flipped to the chapter of my current challenge and will at some point devour every page. Once again, I will be using this book for my own guidance and professionally as well. Thank you Betsy - this is just what we all need. I await the next child development stage...
