Lay Counseling ReviewA reader who comes to this book with a desire to help others grow in their ability to help others (and open mind, obviously) will benefit from this work of Dr. Tan. It is practical in the material covered; this includes the gamut from paraprofessional counselor selection to training and supervision - even the easily neglected area of evaluation. He also provides useful resources (sample questionnaires) and other organizations which one might contact for further assistance. Tan's survey of the writings in this field is not comprehensive and is weaker in the area of research support. However, when this was written there was less work done than there is now, and I understand research not only supports what he has written, but that he plans to ipdate his book and include this material in a new edition. The reader below is clearly trying to play an immature joke on someone or is simply prejudiced and antagonistic to people having differing beliefs than his or her own.Lay Counseling Overview

Speaking Truth In Love ReviewSpeaking Truth In Love is the lastest book by David Powlison, a faculty member at Westminister Theological Seminary and The Christian Counseling & Educational Foundation. In his own words, it is, "a book on how we are to live together." Although primarily directed at pastors and counselors, there is much here to be savored by every child of God. Indeed, an emphasis of the book is that speaking truth in love, wisdom, and grace into another person's life is both the privilege and responsibility for every Christian, not just the "professionals" or the "trained."
There are seventeen chapters, which are really separate essays all looking at differing facets of counseling, or "loving another person well" as Powlison puts it.
Chapter 1 is an extended reflection of Psalm 119, beautifully portraying it as the cry of a faithful heart toward God. It is worth the price of the book for anyone struggling through a trial or helping another.
Chapter 2 talks about the need to face the truth of our rebellious flesh, while chapter 3 talks of hearing the music of the gospel. Chapter 4-8 deal with various practical steps of preparation, listening, and questioning, while chapter 9 specifically deals with gently handling people who have already been immersed in the false psychologies of the world.
Chapter 10 starts looking at a more global emphasis, challenging pastors (and all) to consider that most of the "ministry of the Word" that Christ actually did was what we would now term private and small-group counseling, and not preaching sermons. Chapter 11 looks at how counseling should fit into the ministry of the church, and chapter 12 looks specifically at how the nature of prayer fits into counseling in the church.
The last chapters look at pastoral counseling, women in counseling, when to refer, where to train, and lastly a guiding doctrinal statement for Biblical counseling.
This is a rewarding book written by a wise servant of God, giving insight and direction on both the nature and the challenges the church faces in fulfilling our mandate on speaking truth in love to each other.

Freedom in Christ Bible Study Leader's Guide: A Life-Changing Discipleship Program ReviewI recommend this book over the student guide. I lead a small group and found that people in our group wanted the leaders guide so that they could dig deep into Gods Truth in their lives. I think it would have allowed more time for us to discuss the topics instead of me read everything in each lesson. I also recommend this for individual use. Dont bother with the student guide, get the leaders guide instead.Freedom in Christ Bible Study Leader's Guide: A Life-Changing Discipleship Program Overview

More Jesus, Less Religion: Moving from Rules to Relationship ReviewThis book is amazing and one that I will recommend over and over. It speaks to the realities of what it means to be a Christian. Sometimes Christians are expected to be super human (not to have real feelings), even by fellow Christians. This book reminds us that God gave us feelings and we are to bring all of those feelings and emotions to Christ--the good and the bad. For me, this book was confirmation that I am on the right track to a true relationship with my Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. Before reading this book, please pray and ask the Holy Spirit to open your mind and give you understanding. You must be ready, spiritually, for what the authors say. They don't sugar coat, and they will challenge some old beliefs that may be hindering your relationship with Christ.More Jesus, Less Religion: Moving from Rules to Relationship Overview

Discipleship Counseling: The Complete Guide to Helping Others Walk in Freedom and Grow in Christ ReviewThis is a much needed book for pastors and lay counsellors as well as professional counsellors. He goes into the HEART of therapy, rather than the PROCESS of therapy and puts repentance at the top of his list. Even when working with non-believers, as a counsellor, I still work from the Biblical perspective and it works just the same for them, using the prinicples in this book. I just call things different names (Good and Evil, Positive and Negative, etc, instead of God and Satan).
The only criticism I have is his focus on the devil, which lets people off the hook for their self responsibility. The focus would better have been placed on the grace of God because when people have the revelation of grace, they will WANT to please the Lord and walk in His Spirit.
Nevertheless, it is a great book that will speak to helpers' hearts and the hearts of those they are helping.Discipleship Counseling: The Complete Guide to Helping Others Walk in Freedom and Grow in Christ Overview

Addictions: A Banquet in the Grave: Finding Hope in the Power of the Gospel (Resources for Changing Lives) ReviewWelch's treatment of addictions should be required reading for Christian workers. His books provides both understanding and ammunition for those who will inevitably have to deal with the problem of addictions and other compulsive behavior patterns. Ed Welch gives a thoughtful and urgently needed analysis of the step approaches that is both sensitive and irenic. He effectively sets the subject of addictions forth in its wider Scriptural diminsions, which opens up a path forward to newness and hope. Perhaps the most exciting feature of his book is the fact that he evinces a solid grasp on the reformed view of sanctification from beginning to end. This affords the reader with great confidence that understanding is being gained within the context of substantial theological committments. He who reads this book will certainly come away from it better equipped to handle the problem of addictions in the local Church.

Spiritual Disciplines within the Church: Participating Fully in the Body of Christ ReviewThis is a solid book on corporate spirituality, exploring the dynamics of spiritual formation in the church through disciplines such as serving, giving, praying, attending ordinances, hearing the preached word, learning, fellowshipping, etc. Some chapters are better than others (the best chapters are the ones on worship and prayer and the final chapter which gives guidance on how to research a church before joining it), but all are worth reading. The book is sprinkled with some helpful illustrations and great quotations from the Puritan/Reformed tradition. This is a good follow-up to Whitney's more popular book Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life.Spiritual Disciplines within the Church: Participating Fully in the Body of Christ Overview

Lost in the Middle: Midlife and the Grace of God ReviewThis book is the God-send that an entire generation needs to read, and I say that with no exaggeration. Americans deal with the midlife dilemma in such a superficial way. We think that if we can laugh at ourselves, joke about our circumstances (and maybe undergo a little cosmetic surgery or buy a sports car), then we'll get through it okay. That's just about the only approach to the midlife crisis I've come across, anyway.
But Paul Tripp isn't interested in palliatives. As always, he wants to get to the heart of things. Or, more accurately, he wants us to see that God gets to the heart of things, using the indignities of aging, the accumulated load of life's regrets, the rising fear of life's end, to wrest our attention away from this empty material world. It is quite simply life-changing to view midlife from this perspective.
This book, with its emphasis on the grace of God, is so life-affirming, so filled with words of hope, that you'll never again look in the mirror with such despair. And it's only in midlife that we are ready to hear this message; in our youth the word mortality is hardly even an entry in our inner dictionary. Read this book, and then read it again. Don't go on to the next new, new thing on the Christian bookshelf. This is too important. Thank you, Dr. Tripp. May God continue to richly bless you.Lost in the Middle: Midlife and the Grace of God Overview

Healing is a Choice: 10 Decisions That Will Transform Your Life and 10 Lies That Can Prevent You from Making Them ReviewEvery person makes choices. Some are major and imposing, while others seem insignificant and inconsequential. Still, each individual --- no matter how discouraged, hopeless, or dejected he or she might feel --- has the opportunity to effect positive, life-enhancing change in his or her life. This principle holds true for those struggling to recover from infidelity, divorce, bankruptcy, illness, job loss, familial estrangement, or abuse. Author/counselor/radio host Stephen Arterburn teaches readers practical methodology for making biblically sound decisions that will change their lives for the good.
Arterburn offers no quick fixes in his text, but he compassionately leads those who are seriously interested in investing their time, energy and commitment toward realizing significant life changes through biblically effective methods that will help them to think differently --- Godwardly --- and will enable them to recast a damaged, spiritually stunted history. The author points out that God has provided the properties to heal within every facet of our nature --- bodily, emotionally and spiritually. Writes Arterburn, "It takes courage to seek out, obtain, and utilize whatever resources you need to treat the untreated areas of your life. But not everyone has the courage. Not everyone is willing." His call (plea, actually) is for all Christians to look carefully at who they are, why they do what they do, and how they can move forward to a richer, more spiritually healthy place.
To jumpstart this process, Arterburn recommends "inviting quiet" so as to do a "pain inventory and a feelings checkup." He suggests that individuals ask these introspective questions: What am I afraid of? What is missing? Am I empty? What am I filling up on? Why am I refusing to feel? What feelings am I avoiding? Arterburn says that these questions and their respective responses help people gain insight into life patterns of protection. He asks readers to look at areas where they experience fear, then anger, and finally guilt. Once this exercise is completed, studied and carefully considered, healing can begin when honesty and courage meet with trust and faith in God, and in His ability to provide gracious daily strength to change.
Specifically, the author discusses the following 10 choices every person makes in regard to healing:
Connect one's life with others, or give in to the lie that "all I need to heal is just God and me."
Face life (ugly emotions and all), or the lie that "real" Christians experience real peace in all circumstances
Thoroughly investigate life in search of truth, or embrace the lie that it does no good to look back.
Seek healing for the future, or believe that time heals all wounds.
Help one's life, or give in to the lie of self-sufficiency.
Embrace life, or pretend there is no problem by denying its existence.
Espouse forgiveness, or only bestow the gift on those who deserve it.
Allow risk its proper place, or spend every day protecting oneself from any potential pain.
Serve today, or wait until complete healing has taken place.
Persevere, or give in to hopelessness.
Each of these subjects is handled on a chapter-by-chapter basis with countless narratives, real-life scenarios, and lots of author-to-reader dialogue that encourages, challenges, and lovingly directs.
One of Arterburn's strengths as a communicator is his willingness to be honest about his own life struggles. He is candid, at times sorrowful, and at other times jubilant. But always he urges individuals to seek out the substantive help and healing Christ alone can offer them. --- Reviewed by Michele HoweHealing is a Choice: 10 Decisions That Will Transform Your Life and 10 Lies That Can Prevent You from Making Them Overview

What Did You Expect: Redeeming the Realities of Marriage Review
My wife and I were able to sit through a recent marriage conference by Paul Tripp on Redeeming the Realities of Marriage. If you can go to one of his conferences, it is a great opportunity to enjoy a weekend together and talk through some of the areas that present growth opportunities in marriage.
Attending the live event is beneficial, but Tripp's book What Did You Expect: Redeeming the Realities of Marriage is based on the material from the conference. Tripp begins by examining the "essential wisdom perspectives that Scripture gives us for a realistic expectation of marriage": 1) you are conducting your marriage in a fallen world; 2) you are a sinner married to a sinner; 3) God is faithful, powerful, and willing. Tripp then examines the centrality of worship in all of life and the importance of it in a proper understanding of marriage. We should especially view our marriage in light of the Kingdom of God because we are tempted to be about the process of building our own kingdoms in our life and our marriage. Our marriages will find healing as we align our lives with God's Kingdom.
After explaining the importance of seeing your marriage in light of the Kingdom of God, Tripp structures the book by explaining six commitments that will encourage a lifestyle for a healthy and strong marriage:
1. We will give ourselves to a regular lifestyle of confession and forgiveness.
2. We will make growth and change our daily agenda.
3. We will work together to build a sturdy bond of trust.
4. We will commit to building a relationship of love.
5. We will deal with our differences with appreciation and grace.
6. We will work to protect our marriage.
Each commitment has 2-3 chapters that explains the particular commitment and places it in light of the big picture of the book.
If you have read some of Tripp's other books (such as Instruments in the Hands of the Redeemer or War of Words), you will recognize some of the material. Tripp is applying the aspect of heart change and the gospel of grace to the area of marriage, but even if you have read the other works, this particular study on marriage is important. It would be wise to use this material not only for current marital growth, but also pre-marital counseling as we attempt to prepare couples for the realities of marriage. What Did You Expect: Redeeming the Realities of Marriage Overview
