Foxfire 7 ReviewIn my opinion, this is the best popular culture book ever written about the importance of religion in the South. Whether you're a Southerner by birth, a researcher, or just curious, you'll find something of interest here.
I was born and raised in southern Virginia, and raised a Baptist, and the entire book rings true to what I saw and felt as I was growing up.
But more than that, I was surprised to learn how diverse that Southern religion traditions are. The book is broad-based, fair and even-handed, yet sympathetic. It's the best book I've ever read on the subject, and I've read a lot of 'em.
The chapter on snake-handling alone is worth the price of the book, and it serves as an good example of the "Foxfire" approach. Nothing I've ever read comes as close to putting you right in the middle of a snake-handling worship service. Like the rest of the "Foxfire" series, it does a great job of explaining and demystifying a piece of Southern culture.
The only complaint that I have is that some of the interviews are long-winded and dry in places, but that, too, is characteristic of us Southerners, when we get on a subject that's important to us.Foxfire 7 Overview

The Purpose-Driven Life Journal ReviewIf you're a fan of the "Purpose Driven Life" series OR are simply searching for a good Christian journal to put your thoughts down and stimulate your spiritual thinking, consider this book. A few of the things I liked about it:
-there's plenty of space for writing down your thoughts
-inspiring passages on most pages
-decent questions to ponder
I guess you could consider this as a kind of "workbook" too- not simply a place to jot down what's on your mind as the questions point you to specific areas. A decent little journal, I doubt most will be disappointed. Also recommend Finding Happiness in a Frustrating World to help get one's life goals on track.The Purpose-Driven Life Journal Overview

The New Hiscox Guide for Baptist Churches ReviewDr. Edward Thurston Hiscox (1814-1901) was a distinguished Baptist theologian and author who's Standard Manual for Baptist Churches (published 1890) and New Directory for Baptist Churches (1894) were considered two of the foundational works of the modern Baptist church. In 1964, these books were combined into the Hiscox Guide for Baptist Churches, which has become a classic work in its own right. With the end of the 20th century in sight, it was determined that this book needed to be revised and updated, and for that purpose Dr. Everett C. Goodwin (a well respected Baptist pastor and teacher) was selected to oversee that project.
This book is Dr. Goodwin's revision of the Hiscox Guide, and is divided into eight chapters: 1) the nature of the Church, 2) the membership of the Church, 3) the Church ministry, 4) leaders and officers in the Church, 5) Christian worship, 6) Christian ordinances, rituals and ceremonies, 7) the witness of the Church, and 8) Church order, process and discipline. Following this are seven wonderful appendices that include such things as a Baptist chronology, creeds and confessions, and more.
Overall, I found this to be a great book. It is not a defense of Baptist theology, per se, but instead explains Baptist beliefs and church organization. It is an excellent resource for anyone who wishes to have a clear understanding of Baptist church; what is it and how it operates. Awakened by the Spirit: Reclaiming the Forgotten Gift of God ReviewHaving been a Baptist all of my life I found Dr. Phillips' book to be very challenging. I found myself searching the scriptures and prayerfully considering the content. I must say that when I place the Bible beside Dr. Phillips' book I can find nothing but truth. I believe Awakened by the Spirit to be the most historically and scripturally accurate treatise on the Holy Spirit and His work in the New Testament Church in the past several decades. I believe his kind but honest approach toward cessationism exposes it as the greatest apostasy in the 20th century church. I appreciate His transparancy and his honesty. Thank you Dr. Phillips for helping the 21st Century Church return to Her spiritual roots.
