Crossing to Avalon: A Woman's Midlife Quest for the Sacred Feminine ReviewWomens' wisdom & ways of knowing are almost always discounted by the male-dominated world. The Kirkus Review says, "... quickly degenerates into pop psychology and pseudo-profundities." Why do supposedly intelligent people bother to negate what's profound for someone else? A simple statement that the profundity was lost on you would suffice.

That said, I found this to be a glorious book about a woman's pilgrimage in midlife that changed her deeply and will affect the rest of her life. Women need to hear womens' stories. It's what we've always done & hopefully will continue to do and benefit from.
I found her descriptions of the places she visited absolutely lovely and enriching. Without her extremely intimate perspective, this book would only be an interesting travelogue - not something that inspired me to listen to myself and my body!
To know that my perspective may help someone else clarify theirs is reason enough for me to say all women everywhere should read this one, and share it with the people in their lives.
If you choose not to believe that women all over the world are reawakening to Goddess, that's fine. No one who reveres Goddess will try to change your mind. Women, Writing, and Soul-Making: Creativity and the Sacred Feminine ReviewNot your ordinary how-to manual, Peggy Tabor Millin's Women, Writing and Soul-Making: Creativity and the Sacred Feminine is a unique and inspiring blend of the poetic, spiritual and practical in which the author seeks a balance between "feminine being and masculine doing." Intentionally written in what she perceives is a more feminine form, each chapter spirals back to what has gone before, delving deeper and deeper into each concept. As she explains, "The feminine writes in circles, makes leaps, tells the truth with dream, imagery, and metaphor, and relies on inner knowing. The masculine approach makes outlines, develops linearly from premise to conclusion, and relies on outside authority." Struggling for a structure which honors both, Tabor Millin achieves a synthesis of the intuitive and the cognitive which is the foundation of any creative endeavor.
Unlike many purely intuitive books, Women, Writing and Soul-Making also provides important guidelines that organize and inspire our task of writing more, writing deeper and finding our own voice. She begins with "The Three Steps" of focusing on the sensations of the body to keep ourselves centered, the often recommended free-writing to random prompts, and developing a practice that includes regular writing in a supportive circle of women. She describes an inner being she calls "the observer" who helps us notice without judgment and silences the inner critic who gets in the way of our free expression. She then outlines three obstacles: believing there should be no obstacles, listening to the "I cant's" instead of the "I wills," and searching for an outside authority instead of relying on our own inner guides.
Her "Four Wisdoms" give us access to this inner guidance. "The wisdom of not knowing" tells us we must face our dark and unknown shadow in order to find the truth which will transform our writing and our lives. "The wisdom of the ecology of body and earth" leads us "out of our heads and into our bodies" so we can discover our own voice. "The wisdom of fierce compassion" encourages us to look at the ugly and painful without flinching and to use our anger as motivation for action. "The wisdom of diversity" allows us to tolerate other opinions and helps us make peace with the fact that our writing may not resonate with everyone.
"The Four Paradoxes" teach us to accept that writing is both "pleasure and pain," that we must accept both "praise and criticism," that we desire and simultaneous fear both "fame and disgrace," and that we must reconcile ourselves to both "gain and loss" since we will have to give up an old world view to bring something new into being. "No way exists to make this gain other than to accept that discomfort, anxiety, and insecurity are necessary" she writes. "We consent to uneasiness as motivation for the creative journey--which is no less than our spiritual journey toward self-realization."
As a writer, musician and composer I found Women, Writing and Soul-Making an excellent guide for any creative endeavor. In this wise and wonderful book there is much, much more to inspire not only writers but anyone seeking to heal her artistic self, to explore her inner feminine and find a path to her own voice, her own truth. An absolute must, it deserves an honored place on a nearby shelf beside the likes of Natalie Goldberg and Julia Cameron.

The "Owner's and Operator's Guide" is not limited to only a few key concepts. Literally each and every page offers new and relevant information that every woman can put into action and have fantastic relationships with the men in our lives.
I raced through this book in my first read, pausing only to laugh, because Mama truly does have a unique and hilarious way with words. And also to cry, when I was moved by a new realizations, such as when Mama talks about acknowledgement, as well as anger, and I could really see how that had been impacting my relationships.
This is a "guide" in the true sense of the word. Mama Gena provides very practical and expert viewpoints on communication and man training, but it does not stop there. She includes exercises and checklists throughout the book which are enormously empowering. By putting these fundamentals into action, I believe that a great relationship, is now not only possible, but inevitable. Mama Gena's School of Womanly Arts : Using the Power of Pleasure to Have Your Way with the World ReviewI sat there, looking at the cover, being annoyed by the title and thought, "Oh brother.... this woman ought to get a life, I mean GIVE ME A BREAK!" and then I started reading.
And nodding, and laughing and even taking some notes.
This is NOT highly intellectual. It may not be 100% new material. What it does do is package its message in a way that is workable, applicable, engaging and enjoyable to read.
I found myself mildly annoyed in certain paragraphs though it certainly was not enough for me to set aside all the goodness just because of that.

Understanding The Purpose And Power Of Woman ReviewYou may be skeptical about a book written by a man for women; I was too, at first, not the least because so many Christian authors have tried to place women beneath men in the name of God. Munroe, however, is not such a man. He describes women in truly wonderful ways, as people of power and influence. I almost thought it was too good to be true when I read his words that women and men are equal heirs of God's kingdom (not because I don't believe this, but because some Christians tend to shy away from this fact). Munroe neither paints women as weak beings or strong manipulative ones, but as children of God with great potential and gives wonderful advice on how we can use our strengths in Godly ways. He even said that it's wrong for women to demand equality from men because we've already been given it by God and we should never define ourselves by human viewpoints. This book is truly a wonderful tool for women to use in their lives and for men to use as a way of perspective. She offers no funky discourse about law of physics applied to law of attraction that Max Planck Society scientists find wildly entertaining. "Wander Woman" is a welcome antidote for women suffering from law of attraction fatigue.
I suffer from acute and chronic professional wanderlust. I am a restless spirit, a fractured soul. I debunked assumptions I shared with other women tied to self-limiting beliefs and uncompromising posture in key areas of my professional life.
I applied Reynolds' scoring card to identify dominant behavior patterns as archetypes. I selected several archetypes to serve as my personal Board of Directors, and I summon their energy in combination, at will, when I commence my day. You can read plenty of reviews over at the original book's page.
However, this updated version is nearly identical to the original except that they've hacked out the last chapter! Why did you do this Ron and David?! The last chapter, From Casual to Committed is vital for guys who've found themselves repeatedly in short-term relationships or couldn't keep a relationship going. This chapter alone turned my last relationship from being two months and made it two great years (ultimately I decided not to marry for other reasons). It's vital for any guy who ever wants to have a long-term, fulfilling committed relationship, or marry.

Character Makeover: 40 Days with a Life Coach to Create the Best You ReviewI feel a little bit like I'm cheating by writing a review of the book, "Character Makeover: 40 Days With A Life Coach To Create The Best You" (Zondervan, 2008), by Katie Brazelton and Shelley Leith. First, it is geared towards women. I'm a man. Second, it is laid out in a such a way that a person really ought to spend 40 days with it. I've only had my Advance Reader Copy for 2 days. So, given that I am not of the female persuasion, nor have I had the 40 days to live out the principles discussed in the book, I will give my general impressions.
Generally, I shy away from any product that promises to change a person after so many days or weeks. They tend to be too simplistic, not speaking to the difficulties, interruptions, and disappointments that tend to come with real life. I am even more wary of Christian self-help books, because they tend to garner more of their techniques and bullet points from pop psychology rather than Scripture. This is dangerous in that it retards a person's ability to discern things spiritually.
That being said, I like how much "Character Makeover" relies on Scripture and does not attempt to trivialize the things that people go to. This book isn't about pretending real life doesn't happen. Quite the contrary. Through the use of the stories of various women who have struggled with character issues as they face everyday life, "Character Makeover" keeps its head out of the clouds and its feet firmly planted on the earth. Rather, this book is a resource women can turn to in order to help them change their perspective and temper their reactions when life isn't fair.
Its greatest strength comes from the fact it starts off with the notion that if we wish to develop better character, we must first attend to our relationship with Jesus. The authors thus start the book with a section about humility. This is a great approach, as a person who "changes themselves" can be tempted to boast about all the changes they have made and how good that makes them because of it. However, by connecting true change to God, this encourages women to be humble in how they approach the rest of the book (and their lives).
However, "Character Makeover" is not without its drawbacks. Actually, one of its greatest strengths is one of its greatest flaws. This is not a book that a person can just sit down and enjoy like a novel. It is meant to be an immersive experience. This is accomplished through journal entries, charts to fill out, and boxes to check (on self-evaluation checklists). It is a lot of work and a person has to be totally honest with themselves (or others if they are participating in a group), if they wish to truly get anything out of the experience.
And the questions are not easy ones. For example, on Day 4 of a section about self-control, the reader is asked, "What habit or temptation has power over you?" While this question might seem simple on the surface, it is very easy to answer this question simply, avoiding darker things we know we ought to deal with in our lives. A person might answer, "I have a problem with chocolate," and that may very well be true. But, if they have a habit of gossiping or not controlling their thought life, having a problem with chocolate is the least of their worries. But, the main drawback is that some people don't have the time each day to sit down and follow this kind of program. While the authors might not mind 40 days stretching into 80 or 120 days, some readers may become frustrated and give up.
Overall, "Character Makeover" is a good resource for those who can stick with a 40 day program. I believe they will come out on the other side with the ability to discern situations from a thoroughly Christian point-of-view without sacrificing their ability to live in the real world.

It's No Secret: Revealing Divine Truths Every Woman Should Know ReviewAs a middle-aged man, I don't fit the demographic for whom this book was written, but I know Christian women who do, and I shared a copy of this book with one of them. In going through the book, I found that it was smoothly written and engaging, even though Rachel Olsen's allusions to pop culture sometimes sound forced to me. For example, the major premise of the book is that there are "divine secrets" of the "Yahweh sisterhood" -- and if that's not a blindingly obvious riff on bestselling fiction by Rebecca Wells and Dan Brown, then my name is Matilda.
On the other hand, there's no law against a writer having fun with her own work. As my friend pointed out, Rachel Olsen is a trustworthy guide for any Christian woman who wants to approach Jesus humming that old hymn, "Just a closer walk with Thee". Moreover, Olsen is up front about the irony in revealing divine truths that can hardly be called hidden if you know where to look: "The secrets contained in the pages of this book are nothing new or hidden at all. She's a woman writing warmly in the Reformed Christian tradition for postmodern peers who want advice from the best possible source (scripture) mediated through her own experience.
I would have appreciated additional perspective from formidable women like Catherine of Siena or Teresa of Avila, but that's more of an observation than a criticism (I did say that I wasn't in the target demographic for this book).
What Rachel Olsen does in this book is done very well. She shows how God is both majestic and accessible, and writes movingly about how the lessons of scripture (still) apply to our lives. How I Changed My Mind about Women in Leadership: Compelling Stories from Prominent Evangelicals ReviewWhether you're a complimentarian or egalitarian, this book will bless you and challenge you to dig deeper into God's word.
This collection of some well known evangelicals, Tony Campolo, Bill and Lynne Hybels, and John Ortberg to name just a few, presents some very compelling arguments for the more "inclusive" view of women in leadership roles, both at home and in the church.
Two of the most compelling chapters are chapters 14 and 15, written by John and Nancy Ortberg and Cornelius Plantinga, respectively. Perhaps the most brilliant chapter in the entire book is I. Howard Marshall's, THE GOSPEL DOES NOT CHANGE BUT OUR PERCEPTION OF IT MAY NEED REVISION.
In chapter 18, Ron Sider astutely points out that in Paul's greetings written in Romans 16, he mentions more women co-workers than men. (pg.228)
Other contributors point out the fact that despite Paul instructing women to be silent in his letter to the Corinthians, he also instructs those women who prophesy to cover their heads.. the problem then becomes, how can you prophesy silently?
The most touching chapter in the book comes from Gilbert Bilezikian, who writes about the Armenian genocide from the early 1900's in chapter 3.
I'm probably still not a full fledged egalitarian.
