How Women Help Men Find God ReviewI read this book immediately after reading Murrow's previous book on the same topic, Why Men Hate Going to Church.
His message was great, and I recommend it to every believer. You can read the other glowing reviews as to why.
But let me add one recommendation:
You do not need to by BOTH books. 75% (or more) of the content of How Women Help Men Find God is a repeat of the information already presented in Why Men Hate Going To Church. There are a few additional tidbits that would be practical for an individual woman to help the men in her life find God, so if that is you, buy THAT one instead.
I would encourage you to thoughtfully read what David Murrow has to say, but only buy one book or the other, not both! How Women Help Men Find God Overview

Eat the Cookie...Buy the Shoes: Giving Yourself Permission to Lighten Up ReviewJoyce Meyer's new book 'Eat the Cookie ... buy the Shoes' has a really simple theme: celebrate. Meyer takes on a subject that many Christians and even people in general have a hard time grasping in their lives - celebrate your accomplishments, life and the little things and stop sulking, moping, dwelling on past mistakes. Through the course of the book, Meyer explores all of the occasions a person should have reason or cause to celebrate. She also relates passages from the Bible to back-up her theory that Christians are supposed to celebrate and be happy; it's not just right but a mandate by God. It's not exactly a new, groundbreaking theory but it's an interesting read and something you don't hear or read many Christian authorities and authors writing on.
The Good: Even as a male, I found the topic refreshing. Too often in books written for the 'good and obedient Christian', we're lectured on how we're not doing right by God and how we're flawed and need to repent and will never get over the sins we've committed. Well, Meyer takes on this subject and turns it on its head. This is a very light, happy, celebratory piece of literature. She lectures the Christian but not in the manner of telling him/her that they have been bad and there's no way to recover, but to lecture them by saying 'lighten up!' She encourages us to party, to treat and indulge ourselves within reason, to take vacations and time off, to set goals and to figure out how we can improve our lives. It was refreshing and uplifting to hear such an authority in Christian faith like Joyce Meyer saying it's okay to take time out to celebrate, to have fun, enjoy life and that by doing so you may actually become a better Christian. The text is full of helpful tips on getting more enjoyment out of life and everyday living.
The Bad: My overall complaint is that while the subject is really so simple that for most of the book, I felt the introductory chapter did a good enough job of summing up the main message. The other chapters, will enjoyable, felt as if they were a bit unnecessary and elaborated on points already made. It felt as if Meyer spent more time trying to figure out how to re-phrase the same thing in each chapter, giving the book a bit of a repetitive, monotonous vibe. The first and last chapters gives the reader the message in a clear and concise way. The middle chapters elaborate over and over the points made in the intro and final chapter.
In all, a good book even though the subject matter is nothing new and is simple enough where it felt as if the author was stretching out certain themes and chapters due to it.Eat the Cookie...Buy the Shoes: Giving Yourself Permission to Lighten Up Overview

Feathers from My Nest: A Mother's Reflections ReviewAs my nest is emptying (our youngest went off to college this fall), I look at those "empty nest" books with a combination of hesitancy, desire to know someone else's experience, and disbelief that I am really at this stage. It seems we just brought our first baby girl home from the hospital (it was only 22 years ago, which often seems more like 22 months!).
I'm thankful to the Lord for my children and for my dear husband - that after all these years, we still have things to talk about, experiences to share, and plenty of love left for each other.
So I opened this book, not real eagerly, I must confess - after all, this was about a book that I really wasn't ready for! The 4-page introduction "Feathers from My Nest" alone is worth the price of this book! Talk about telling it like it is! Mr. Sparrow is talking to Mrs. Sparrow as she's trying to gather feathers from her nest - memories to take with her on their new journey together.
I have to thank Amazon for making it possible to get a better look inside the books we buy from them - the pages you will see are part of the first chapter of the book AFTER the intro I just mentioned. You'll get an idea of Beth Moore's writing style.
Each chapter talks about a certain "feather" that's been left behind in Beth's nest when her two daughters flew away. One chapter is "The Crumpled Kleenex". Mom spends some time in her daughter's bed after the daughter leaves home and she finds this kleenex and she wonders what the tears were about. "The Binders" talks about one of her daughter's method of proclaiming that she was making a new start with her schoolwork - this chapter has lessons for us all on the grace of God. "The Magazines" chapter discusses the family's struggle with how our society values skinny women and how it impacted one of their daughters and their fight to pull her from the clutches of an eating disorder. And "The Green Cap and Gown" is about graduation, of course.
The last chapter is entitled "One Slightly Gray, Well-Seasoned Man" and is about her husband Keith. A perfect ending for this story of feathers left in their nest. Beth is looking forward to the rest of her life with this wonderful man who was there at the beginning - before there were little chicks to leave feathers behind!
This book is a fabulous book for moms of all ages. Don't think that it's just an "Empty Nest" book. If you have children getting ready to try out their wings, this is a must-read.
I haven't read Beth Moore's other books (most notably "Breaking Free" and "Praying God's Word"), but I would like to.
If you have a child in high school or college, you simply must read this book. My other very-favorite book on parenting older kids is "Give Them Wings" by Carol Kuykendall, which covers parenting from driver's license to leaving home. Excellent book!

Devotions for Ministry Wives ReviewI am one of the contributors to this book and could hardly wait for the book's release to read what the other women had written. I have been encouraged and helped by them.
Even in a hectic season or life, the 2-page devotionals are accessible and good for any woman who wants to deepen her faith.
I recommend the book especially to ministry women who have been put off by the negative angle that many books have toward our calling, that see our lives mainly from the perspective of difficulties that come our way. The writers of DEVOTIONS FOR MINSTRY WIVES don't gloss over problems, but their outlook is definitely that they are glad to be where God has placed them.
If no one has given this book to you yet, buy it for yourself!Devotions for Ministry Wives Overview

The Lady, Her Lover, and Her Lord ReviewOnce again, Bishop Jakes has spent time talking with God and relaying it as only he can and in such a way that all can relate and understand. This books looks into the hearts and soul of many women, including myself. Healing is what it's all about...learning how to get beyond and to really be free from those things that hinder us from going forth in this world. Bishop shows us how to balance our lives and achieve this inner peace that we all long for.
I am not married but this book showed me how we as women should treat our husbands. At this point in my life, God is my husband and my Lord. I have learned how to worship and adore God as I would the mate that he will bring into my life. That book is an encouragement in itself in that Bishop Jakes tells us that we can have it all spiritually and emotionally.
I recommend this book to any woman who has a desire to grow and to really know what it means to be whole. I would also encourage all women to attend the Woman, Thou Art Loosed seminar in July. Last year it was breathtaking. This book really follows behind that whole seminar. I thank God for using Bishop Jakes in such a way. Bishop really has a deep compassion for women and for that I am thankful.
Keep up the good work Bishop! The Lady, Her Lover, and Her Lord Overview

It's No Secret: Revealing Divine Truths Every Woman Should Know ReviewAs a middle-aged man, I don't fit the demographic for whom this book was written, but I know Christian women who do, and I shared a copy of this book with one of them. In going through the book, I found that it was smoothly written and engaging, even though Rachel Olsen's allusions to pop culture sometimes sound forced to me. For example, the major premise of the book is that there are "divine secrets" of the "Yahweh sisterhood" -- and if that's not a blindingly obvious riff on bestselling fiction by Rebecca Wells and Dan Brown, then my name is Matilda.
On the other hand, there's no law against a writer having fun with her own work. As my friend pointed out, Rachel Olsen is a trustworthy guide for any Christian woman who wants to approach Jesus humming that old hymn, "Just a closer walk with Thee". Moreover, Olsen is up front about the irony in revealing divine truths that can hardly be called hidden if you know where to look: "The secrets contained in the pages of this book are nothing new or hidden at all. They've all been wrapped within the Word of God and the person of Christ for thousands of years, readily accessible through the ages," she writes. Olsen, in other words, is no Gnostic. She's a woman writing warmly in the Reformed Christian tradition for postmodern peers who want advice from the best possible source (scripture) mediated through her own experience.
I would have appreciated additional perspective from formidable women like Catherine of Siena or Teresa of Avila, but that's more of an observation than a criticism (I did say that I wasn't in the target demographic for this book).
What Rachel Olsen does in this book is done very well. She shows how God is both majestic and accessible, and writes movingly about how the lessons of scripture (still) apply to our lives. This book will never be recommended by Oprah Winfrey, but I daresay it will prove helpful for those to whom it is written, not least the author's own daughter. It's No Secret: Revealing Divine Truths Every Woman Should Know Overview

Did I Kiss Marriage Goodbye: Trusting God with a Hope Deferred ReviewMs McCully writes with humor yet loaded with hope, vision and purpose for the ever increasing number of Christian single women in our world. A unique voice, charged with personal self-diclosure, integrity to take on the authenticity of life for the Christian woman today, and armed with biblical truth to separate and discern what a unique gift single life is and to infuse vision and courage and finishing the race with faithfulness.
This book is full of insight and hope, not a book to pick up if you want someone to console your pity, rather a book that genuinely takes on the very real challenges and temptations in our culture with integrity, even within The Church, for the Christian woman today. Sin in this book is sin. Good is good. Right is right. Godly is godly.
By far, the best part of the book is the hope it instills that we can walk faithfully, gratefully and with a heart of praise.
Here are the chapter headings.
Table of Contents:
1. "You're Still Single?": Hard questions, Godward answers

God's Promises for Women ReviewI'd had this book for several months before I picked it up and opened it during my daily quiet time one morning. Being a "Bible snob" I was very surprised that it ministered to me in a very real way. Since then, I've used it often, along with my Bible in my daily time of prayer and meditation. The scriptures that are selected are ones we've all heard and love and sometimes spend alot of time looking for. But, open the book, and here they all are. It is one of my favorites now. I plan to give copies of this little book as Easter gifts to my women friends.God's Promises for Women Overview

Each Day a New Beginning: Daily Meditations for Women ReviewOne of my best friends recommended this book to me last winter. She said she carried hers everywhere she went even when she traveled. It brought her peace especially after the death of her mother. It is a wonderful book for women. Each day (it's a daily reflection) offers an inspiring quote, a powerful meditation and an encouraging affirmation. The book reflects the individuality and spirituality of women and the importance of their self esteem. It's funny to me that the right words always seem to appear on the page just when I need to read them for that extra boost. Each Day a New Beginning: Daily Meditations for Women Overview

So Long, Insecurity Group Experience ReviewReview by Jill Williamson
I love Beth Moore. I've never met her, but I've done several of her Bible studies and had the privilege of attending one of her conferences. The woman inspires me. Why? Because she's real. She's suffered through life, just like the rest of us, and she refuses to let that define her. Praise Jesus for that! That, and her passion for studying the Word of God, draws me, and thousands of other women, to her like sheep to a shepherd. She is a disciple of Jesus. She teaches His truth in a wonderful, personal, life-changing way.
So when I saw this book, I knew I needed it. I've always had low self-esteem. And I am plagued by insecurity. The smallest little comment will send me into a spiral of woe. One example, I have the nasty habit of interpreting faces. I can read minds, too, you know. If someone looks at me funny, I know I did something to make them upset with me, and I can't stand it until I know everything is okay again. I've also trained myself to interpret email tones. I entertain my husband every time I read an email to him. He says I read every word with a negative, attacking tone, as if the author has a personal agenda against me--or someone.
One of my husband's most telling phrases is: It must be exhausting being you.
Well, ouch.
But he's right. It is exhausting being so insecure. I don't mean to do this to myself. And I'm tired of it. And a bit ticked off, as Beth was in the beginning of her book. Having read the book, I will say that I now have confidence that I can beat this thing. Insecurity distracts our minds from living the life God intends for us. It keeps us weak instead of strong. It keeps us distant instead of loving. It keeps us judging instead of reaching out and building lasting friendships.
Once again, Beth Moore has inspired me. I'm saying, "So long, Insecurity! You don't own this girl!" Whoo hoo! Now that's something to get excited about. If you've ever felt insecure, sit down and talk it out with Beth. And that's exactly what this book was. A nice, long, heart to heart with Beth Moore about a topic that plagues us. I highly recommend it.
