My husband and I have been married for thirty years, and we have run the gamut of emotions and experiences as lovers and best friends in that span of time. We want to continue to grow in our relationship and David Deida's book is about the intimate communion we all want in our relationships. I dare to say, as I read this book, and watch the news or an "intelligent" talk show about relationships, I see how David Deida's insights could make a difference in understanding and moving FORWARD to resolving the male/female issues in our culture. Oprah, here he comes - a man with tremendous and unusual insights, teaching us how to live in true harmony with the sexes! This book (as well as his other books) truly and deeply respects the feminine as much as the masculine. The points are well-made while honoring and UNDERSTANDING men and women. An Archive of Feelings: Trauma, Sexuality, and Lesbian Public Cultures (Series Q) ReviewBefore I ordered this book for my Queers and Theory class various folks told me, "It changed my life." Academic books don't usually elicit such comments.
Yet it is not a "self-help" book, far from it. It is a thoughtful and graceful mix of cultural criticism, media engagements, insightful and workable theory, participant analysis, histories and interpretations of lgbt lives, and steadfastly original work on trauma across all these sites of meaning and scholarship.
It is also a rather compulsive read. It feels remarkably personal, reaching out to the reader's person too. And the personal here is crafted so sparingly, practically zen. It's deep without being intrusive, empathetic without being sentimental. I marvel at this poetic distillation.
Everyone in my class loved this book. It drew us together, even though everyone cared most about quite different chapters. People thought our discussions about it were the best of the semester.
When I told my therapist about it, she went immediately to her computer to order it.
Cvetkovich's approach is lean, quiet and profound. And it is a big book. It starts you out on a range of threads of connection: to great music, conscious film-making, archives and histories, activisms and contemplation. As a matter of fact, I have not seen the fantastic insights in Sacred Sex ANYWHERE else, and I've read plenty of books on the subject. How to Succeed with Women, Revised and Updated ReviewI'll keep this short: This book is an excellent book for learning that basics of relationships, how to live a generative life that attracts women, and how to find, meet and build a relationship with women. You can read plenty of reviews over at the original book's page.
However, this updated version is nearly identical to the original except that they've hacked out the last chapter! Why did you do this Ron and David?! The last chapter, From Casual to Committed is vital for guys who've found themselves repeatedly in short-term relationships or couldn't keep a relationship going. This chapter alone turned my last relationship from being two months and made it two great years (ultimately I decided not to marry for other reasons). It's vital for any guy who ever wants to have a long-term, fulfilling committed relationship, or marry.

Sex and the Soul: Juggling Sexuality, Spirituality, Romance, and Religion on America's College Campuses ReviewThis is a carefully researched and elegantly written book on the relationship between sexuality and spirituality on US college campuses. It is pretty well known among scholars that high school kids are quite religious in the US. When they go to college they start turning away from the religions of their parents, often toward more generic spirituality. Why does this happen? Freitas thinks sexual experience might hold the key. In other words, as college students start experimenting sexually they push away from religion, since religion is in their view "anti-sex." That's the argument, or part of it. But at the heart of the book lie stories about these students. Kids at evangelical, Catholic, and secular schools struggling with faith and sexuality. It's brilliantly done. It's sad in many ways to see the binds that "hookup culture" put young people in. It's balanced in that there are things in here that will infuriate (and delight) conservatives and liberals alike. And it's timely. The Virgin Diaries ReviewWhat makes this book particularly interesting is that the anonymity allows the male contributors to unselfconsciously share their true feelings about how, when, and to whom they chose to lose their virginity.
If the men in this book are any indication, there is a decent percentage of men who are in touch with their own feelings and genuinely care about their partners' feelings as well. In this sense, the stories were not at all what I expected and a truly welcome surprise. A great read people of almost all ages
