Making Love Last a Lifetime Participant's Book: Biblical Perspectives on Love, Marriage and Sex ReviewI have read a lot of marriage-related material lately, and I would recommend this book as the most succinct. It's a quick read and gives lots of good Biblical advice, plus cites several other books which would be of interest. If everyone read this book and took it to heart, there would be no divorces!!Making Love Last a Lifetime Participant's Book: Biblical Perspectives on Love, Marriage and Sex Overview

Understanding The Purpose And Power Of Woman ReviewYou may be skeptical about a book written by a man for women; I was too, at first, not the least because so many Christian authors have tried to place women beneath men in the name of God. Munroe, however, is not such a man. He describes women in truly wonderful ways, as people of power and influence. I almost thought it was too good to be true when I read his words that women and men are equal heirs of God's kingdom (not because I don't believe this, but because some Christians tend to shy away from this fact). Munroe neither paints women as weak beings or strong manipulative ones, but as children of God with great potential and gives wonderful advice on how we can use our strengths in Godly ways. He even said that it's wrong for women to demand equality from men because we've already been given it by God and we should never define ourselves by human viewpoints. This book is truly a wonderful tool for women to use in their lives and for men to use as a way of perspective. Munroe is to be praised and I highly recommend this book!Understanding The Purpose And Power Of Woman Overview

Cupid's Code: The Psychology of Relationships, Seduction, Marriage & Love ReviewInformative and fulfilling with a cute cover! Sometimes you just come across something that is so special, you just have to share it with everyone you care about. Overall this book has something for everyone: Science, strategies, cool kid's art work, and a schooling on people and yourself. ALL FROM THE GUY WHO DATED ALL OF THE PERSONALITY TYPES!!
Cupid's Code starts us off with the introduction by Managing Director of the personality system, and moves into the "Date," where we learn about ourselves and others as well as explore the science of attraction. Then we move into "The Proposal," where we learn about how the Date can be applied to the different existing ideas like Mars and Venus and the 5 Love Languages. The Proposal then ties up with a neat section in how we can seduce the other "types" and what life would look like with them. The third section, "The Commitment," shows us information from what makes successful marriages work, to how terrible our decisions have been, and then ties in the science of marriage satisfaction.
The first section of the book talks about how the author came to discover the information and write the book. He then talks to us about how to use the information. In the Date, we are introduced to attachment and love. Each of us attaches differently, and each of us seeks a different kind of love. Next, we meet a few different "friends" that join us conversationally in the book. These friends open the door to different types of people. The date then explains how each of us is different and that we all seek different experiences in life. This section explains how we are wired. This section was huge and in depth. The gem here was the communication tactics, as the "Code" is shared with us and how we can look at our spouse and understand where they are coming from. "Seek first to understand, and then to be understood." The next part of the date goes through all of the findings that science has shown us about attraction. The next section is the Proposal. This part explores all of the other theorists, like Gray and his Mars and Venus and Chapman's 5 Love Languages. Cupid's Code now transforms into a theory and it measures itself against all of the other theories that are popular and ties them together. Then we go through internet dating, and some neat tricks in order to catch the eye of your "type." In the Commitment, we are offered up information about how we are not doing well in picking our potential spouses. This section then explains the science of how we can improve our odds of satisfaction in selecting our ideal spouse. The commitment reinforces how important it is to have a satisfying marriage and happy life.
The last section goes through how we can apply the information in the book to our lives, and tells us what happened to our "friends" that we meet throughout the book. We are also able to take the personality test that helps us identify how we are wired, and what love and attachment we seek. Knowing those ingredients help us to understand the content of this book in more depth.

The Practice of Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy: Creating Connection (Basic Principles Into Practice Series) ReviewJohnson does a beautiful job of laying out the process of effective therapy with couples in a manner that is both clear and respectful of the complexity of the process. Upon reading her book, it suddenly became clear to me why I have been successful with some couples and painfully inadequate with others. It's been a real jump-start to my feeling alive and effective again in therapy. Love That Lasts: When Marriage Meets Grace Review"A potter begins by centering his clay on the wheel. When the wheel starts turning, he can't just grab the clay. He must carefully but firmly keep the clay in the center of the wheel. He has to work it gently but deliberately, applying just enough pressure to shape it while constantly adding moisture. If he lets the clay get cold, it becomes stiff, resistant, and unworkable. If he neglects the clay and fails to add water, it will dry out and crack. If he stops the process and then starts again, he may force the clay off center, or he may mar it by putting his hands on it too quickly or aggressively. It takes time, but if the potter is patient, creative, and firm but gentle, there's no limit to what he can create."
This brief excerpt is drawn from Love That Lasts, written by Gary and Betsy Ricucci. Gary, who wrote these words, applies this metaphor to a husband learning to practice romance as an art. "I am to pursue my wife consistently, warmly, and affectionately, lavishing her with encouragement and affirmation." What caught my attention as I read this section of the book was the lesson he seeks to teach through these words. While the lesson is meant primarily for husbands as they relate to their wives, there is such a strong parallel between the marriage relationship and the relationship of Christ to His people that I could not help but see a lesson for my relationship with the Savior. "Every wife is different, and so is every season of life." We could as easily affirm that "every person is different, as is every season of life." And here is the lesson: "But like the potter, we are committed to the process as well as to the outcome." That little sentence stopped me in my tracks.
"Like the potter, we are committed to the process as well as to the outcome." You see, I know that God has great things in store for me in heaven. I believe firmly that, when I die or when Christ returns, I will be changed in the twinkling of an eye. I will be instantaneously made perfect and will be restored to the state of perfection in which I was created to live. My relationship to God will be fully restored and I will no longer desire what is sinful. I know that this is God's ultimate goal, to display His glory in transforming me fully and finally into His likeness. God's goal for me is nothing less than glorification.
While I have full confidence in God's ultimate plan, I find that I have far less confidence in His committment to the process that precedes this consumation. When I read Ricucci's words I had to pause and reflect and ask myself if I truly believe that God is as committed to the process of sanctification as He is to the final act of glorification. Is Christ pleased with the baby steps He sees in my life, or does He lament that I do not grow more--that I do not grow faster? Does He rejoice with me as I grow in my knowledge and love of Him? Is He glorified even in the smallest, halting step I take towards being further transformed into His image?
I thought about this for a while. And then I saw in myself and in my attitude towards my wife just a shadow, a fleeting glimpse, of the work of Christ. I love my wife dearly. I love Aileen so much that my heart aches for her sanctification. I love few things more than seeing my wife reading her Bible, teaching the children about God, and being with her in times of worship. I pray continually that God will continue to mold her into His image. And, if I look carefully, I can see times when I have provided the leadership to help move her (and myself, and our children) towards this goal. I can see where I have been committed to the process. And best of all, I can see the joy I have taken both in leading her through the process and in seeing the results of the process. In my relationship with Aileen I can see, as if in a dim, clouded mirror, a reflection of the work of Christ in my life.
Of course I can also see with startling, shameful clarity the inumerable times that I have failed. I can think of opportunities missed or deliberately avoided. I can see times where my own selfishness and laziness have no doubt robbed Aileen of many a blessing. Yet my faith is stirred when I think that God never misses an opportunity. God is faithful where I am faithless, committed where I am laxadasical, strong where I am weak.
And I am grateful. My marriage ought to be a near-perfect metaphor of the relationship of Christ to His church. Because of my sin, and because of Aileen's sin, it cannot be. Yet through God's grace it can still be a shadow. It can still point to a greater, more perfect reality. It can point to Christ.
It also occured to me that there is a point at which the metaphor of marriage ends, for there is no glorification in a marriage. There will never be a time in which every marriage will be made perfect. Instead, marriage will cease. Like the sacrifices of the Old Testament, marriage will cease for it will no longer be necessary. We will no longer need this shadow to point to a greater reality since, thanks be to God, we will live within the final reality. As the feasts and festivals and sacrifices of the Old Covenant were fulfilled in Christ's death, so the ultimate purpose of marriage will be fulfilled in His return.
What became clear to me as I read this book is that by studying marriage as it is presented in Scripture, we are studying Christ. When we learn about how a husband is to love and care for His wife and how a wife is to submit to and respect her husband, we are learning how Christ cares for us and how we are to respond to His love. When we, as husbands, commit ourselves to the pursuit of our wives and to shape their hearts and lives through loving leadership, we learn how Christ molds and shapes us as we learn of the loving committment it takes to do this. When wives submit to the leadership of their husbands and respond to their initiative, they display the love and faith they must also have in the Savior.
Love That Lasts is a book that is well worth reading for both a husband and a wife. It is, in the words of Jerry Bridges, "thoroughly biblical, very practical, and quite convicting." The Ricucci's are members of Covenant Life Church in Gathersburg, Maryland and one can clearly see within their writing the influence of the ministry of C.J. Mahaney. I dare say that if a person attempted to combine C.J.'s books Humility and Sex, Romance and the Glory of God along with Carolyn's Feminine Appeal, he would end up with something much like this.
My only real disappointment was that it sometimes seemed that the authors were holding back. I know that they know so much more about marriage than they were able to relay in the 160 pages of this book and I wish that I could have learned more from them. Perhaps God will provide the opportunity for them to write more thoroughly in the future. I hope He does.
This is a book about marriage, about the relationship of a husband and wife. But on a deeper level, it is a book about the church, about the relationship of Christ to His people. And this is the way it ought to be, for marriage exists primarily for His glory. Marriage is not about me, it is not about her, and it is not about us. Marriage finds its purpose primarily in God. As the Ricucci's say, "A truly Christian marriage starts with the reality that the institution of marriage does not belong to us. It belongs to God. He designed marriage, and his purposes for it are paramount." Having read this book I can truly say that never has marriage seemed so important, so worth the investment, and so great a means of sanctification. I will let this sentence stand as my endorsement for this book, for I'm quite sure that there is no higher praise I could provide.Love That Lasts: When Marriage Meets Grace Overview

The Five Love Languages Singles Edition ReviewI read the original THE FIVE LOVE LANGUAGES by Dr. Gary Chapman when I was a single freshman in college. I don't remember what inspired me to pick up the book, given that the tagline was "How to Express Heartfelt Commitment to Your Mate," but I couldn't put it down. I read it in one all-night sitting, crying my way through the sections that illuminated and explained tension I'd had in specific relationships with family and friends. It was dark outside but light bulbs were going off inside my head all night.
"Aha! His primary love language is Acts of Service! No wonder he gets so frustrated when we kids don't help around the house."
"Quality time! That's what she values, not my professions of appreciation and friendship."
Based on its applicability to my own life, I immediately determined that Chapman's ideas about there being five love languages were spot-on. And so did about a zillion other people since he has sold approximately that number of books. If you're one of the few people who has no clue what I'm talking about when I say the five love languages, let me explain.
In Chapman's theory, there are five ways in which people express and understand love. These five "languages" are Acts of Service, Words of Affirmation, Gifts, Quality Time, and Physical Touch. Chapman believes that while some people can often express and understand love in any number of these languages, we all have a primary love language through which we are most comfortable expressing and receiving love. He goes on to say that tension in relationships often stems from not understanding the other person's primary love language --- not understanding how the other person is communicating their love and how that person needs to be communicated to in order to understand they are loved.
Though Chapman originally framed his teaching on the love languages in the context of marriage, it quickly became clear that people in all stages of life were connecting with the concept of the languages. And over the last several years, he has tailored his message for different groups in books including THE FIVE LOVE LANGUAGES OF CHILDREN, THE FIVE LOVE LANGUAGES OF TEENAGERS, THE LOVE LANGUAGES OF GOD, and now, THE FIVE LOVE LANGUAGES FOR SINGLES.
The United States has more singles that any other nation in the world except for India and China. Four out of every ten Americans are single, so it makes sense that Chapman would choose to address this large audience. In THE FIVE LOVE LANGUAGES FOR SINGLES the core teaching of the original book stays intact but he shapes his message for singles of all stripes --- never married, divorced, widowed, separated, and single parents --- by including anecdotes of the unmarried dealing with various relationship issues.
My one complaint about this book is that the bulk of the anecdotes still seem to revolve around romantic relationships and the looming specter of marriage. A couple of chapters are dedicated to the application of the love languages with roommates, co-workers, family members, etc., but in the chapters that deal with each of the love languages in detail, the illustrations revolve around dating relationships. That's not bad per se, but I would have liked to see more diversity in the types of relationships (i.e. best friends, classmates) that are addressed here.
Having said that, the five love languages themselves continue to ring true in my experience and their adaptation for the single audience is welcome. I highly recommend THE FIVE LOVE LANGUAGES FOR SINGLES to anyone who would like to improve communication with the people in his or her life. Chapman himself writes:
"My desire for the single who reads this book is that you will learn both to receive and find love in all five love languages. I am assuming that those who take time to read a book on love desire to become better persons, to have better relationships, and to reach their potential of leaving a positive impact on the world. It is my sincere belief that learning to speak and understand the five love languages will help you reach that objective."

The Five Languages of Apology: How to Experience Healing in all Your Relationships ReviewThe first thing I had to do when I received my copy of The Five Languages of Apology was to take The Apology Language Profile in the back of the book. I approached it in the happy, fun way I used to look at surveys in women's magazines until the very first question stopped me dead in my tracks. Since it was about how a spouse should apologize for failing to acknowledge a wedding anniversary, it hit home right away. I knew this was going to be a serious book and that it would bring up some very raw emotions. My husband had recently intended to acknowledge our anniversary with a beautiful gift, but it was stolen from his car before he had the chance, and nothing more was said or done about it. Even though I knew my husband was not to blame, I needed someone to take responsibility and there was no one to do that thus creating an unresolved issue we would eventually work through. As I read more of the questions, I experienced emotions ranging from sadness to anger and by the end of it I realized that very few people had ever apologized to me at all let alone took the time to figure out my apology language! It made perfect sense to me that my preferred apology language is accepting responsibility, since people who come from dsyfunctional homes often long for someone to own up to what he or she has done or said, and because this rarely happens, communication becomes distorted. In the midst of my own issues this book was addressing, I was comforted by the words Chapman and Thomas used to lead me from feeling very alone and rejected because of the lack of apologies given to me, to experiencing some healing and closure due to the new understanding I have been given. I have also become much more aware of the apologies I see in movies and in my relationships with friends. I do believe that if we could get to the point of being willing to apologize, even if we have to stumble through it at first, we would broaden our ability to truly love one another. The Five Languages of Apology: How to Experience Healing in all Your Relationships Overview

The Love & Respect Experience: A Husband-Friendly Devotional that Wives Truly Love ReviewInitiating, leading, and maintaining a regular time of structured devotions with my wife has been a huge weakness in my life. I/we have tried several times and it has never seemed to stick for a few reasons:
First, time seems to always be our arch nemesis. Life in ministry is busy and life as a stay-at-home mother of two, soon to be three, is no easier. Mornings are frantic getting everyone ready for the day. Evenings are busy with the children. By the time night comes around, we are both generally drained.
Second, when we have shared in a devotional experience, it has mostly felt forced and odd. I really cannot explain why, it just does.
Third, it's challenging to find a good, usable devotion book. Many are too simplistic.
I am the audience of Eggerichs' book. I want to share a devotional time with my wife, but for the above reasons...ok, excuses...I haven't consistently done so. Eggerichs has no issue with this agenda, he is actually pretty clear about it. After all, it's even alluded to in the book's subtitle: A Husband-Friendly Devotional that Wives Truly Love. In the Introduction, Eggerich writes to husbands, wives, and couples to explain that his goal is provide devotions for couples that will not feel forced or overwhelming for husbands, that will not cause couples to put each other under the marriage microscope of criticism, and that will produce the closeness for which wives yearn.
Eggerichs has built the devotions around his book, Love and Respect. Although I have not read this book, it appears that The Love & Respect Experience is simply his previous work synthesized and adapted into devotional form. That's not necessarily a criticism, merely an observation. It may not be a bad strategy if it helps some men who might not sit down to read a book to digest the material.
The basic premise of this devotional book, and apparently Love and Respect, is, based on Ephesians 5:33, that men most need respect from their wives and women most need love from their husbands. Eggerichs expands upon this thesis by presenting three common cycles of marriage, depicting the vastly different lens through which men (blue) and women (pink) perceive things, and offering practical tools and techniques to lead men to love their wives and wives to respect their husbands. This philosophy is briefly summarized in the Introduction and Appendix B, although it is fleshed out in the devotions themselves.
Many men will find great relief in how Eggerichs recommends couples to use this book. First, Eggerichs does not offer a frequency for working through these devotions. While he admits that because there are fifty-two, it would seem fitting to do one a week, that is not required. Second, he recommends that couples read the material separately and then come together to simply discuss them, thereby reducing the common awkwardness of reading a devotion out loud.
The fifty-two devotions are rather brief, some barely reaching a page and a half, which some may feel is a weakness of the book. Each devotion includes a Bible verse, insight from Eggerichs, a key insight, a prayer, and action points. Discussion questions are also available in Appendix A.
The only criticism I would level against The Love & Respect Experience is that the verses seem to be added simply to "devotionize" the book. Eggerichs' comments don't really address the verses which is not the way I would like people approaching the Bible. However, his principles and content are born out of Scripture and are quite important for married followers of Jesus, so I can live with this shortcoming.
Having not worked through this with my wife yet, I will offer a qualified endorsement of The Love and Respect Experience. I am looking forward to using this a devotional guide myself and believe it would be helpful for married couples to either introduce, refresh, or reinforce the basic concepts.
A copy of the book was provided to me by the publisher as part of the booksneeze.com blogger program in return for an unbiased review. The thoughts in this review are all mine.
