Planting Seeds: Practicing Mindfulness with Children ReviewThis book is a beautiful, practical, and extremely helpful book that anyone interested in introducing children to mindfulness and related practices will greatly appreciate. It was written by the Venerable Thich Nhat Hanh, Vietnamese Zen monk and teacher, and author of many well-known books, including Peace Is Every Step: The Path of Mindfulness in Everyday Life. The book evolved out of his work with children at Plum Village Community, a Buddhist center in Southern France that he co-founded. The book encompasses the work of himself and many of his colleagues at Plum Village, including nuns and monks in-residence, as well as educators and parents that have attended retreats at the center focused on children.
Written for both parents and educators, each chapter of Planting Seeds begins with an overview of a topic, including mindful breathing, meditation, compassion, nature, suffering, healing, age, and death. After the overview, each chapter includes stories, sample activities, and guided meditations that adults can use to explore these themes with children. Many chapters include personal stories from educators and parents that work at Plum Village, or that attended retreats there and then strove to integrate what they learned in their work. They describe their personal experiences - including challenges - introducing children to these activities, in both home and school environments.
Although the themes are all grounded in Buddhism, they are introduced in a way that is non-religious, and so could be used to introduce children of any background to mindfulness. In fact, most of the educators that offer testimonials describe integrating these themes into secular environments, or even religious ones of other persuasions.
The book includes a CD with some of the guided meditations and songs tied to the exercises in the book, including "I Follow My Breath", "Pebble Meditation" and "Deep Relaxation for Young People." Lyrics are included for those songs that have them in the back of book, as well as written overviews of the guided meditations. Four meditation cards corresponding to the four meditations included in the 'Breathing in, Breathing Out' meditation are also in the Appendix.
For example, in the first meditation, the focus is on feeling as fresh and pure as a flower, so the card says:
"Breathing in, I see myself as a flower, a human flower...
Breathing out, I am beautiful just as I am, and I feel very fresh."
Subsequent cards are focused on being solid as a mountain, calm as still water, and free as open space.
Many chapters also include excerpts from Q&A sessions Thich Nhat Hanh did with children involved in these activities. One of my favorites was from a discussion on age and death (Thich Nhat Hanh is referred to as Thay here):
Child's Questions: How old are you?
Thay: Well, how old are you first?
Child: I am six, almost seven.
Thay: Listen, I am going to give you a good answer. I am the continuation of the Buddha, so I am 2,600 years old.
Child: Oh!
Thay: I am also the continuation of my father, so I am 110 years young. I know that you are my continuation and I feel that I am in you, so at the time I am six years old also. That is true, because I have been reborn in that child. He will carry me into the future. So I am quite young. I am six years old. If you look around, you see me a little bit everywhere. I have different ages. Okay?
Overall, this is a beautiful and practical book that any parent or educator (Buddhist or no) will treasure as a guide to introducing children to mindfulness, compassion, and related themes.Planting Seeds: Practicing Mindfulness with Children Overview

Children Matter: Celebrating their Place in the Church, Family and Community ReviewAlthough this book is written by a group of educators it is one of the best books I have ever read on children's spirituality and show us with many examples how the faith community can nurture its youngest members. Children Matter emphasized relationships between people and encourages the church to welcome all children as valued participants in the people of God.
A wide range of examples from the Protestant traditions and drawing on the Bible, history and psychology to lay good foundations. The examples were excellent and evualated with strengths and weaknesses for all ages from toddler through grade school. The evidence of teaching is learning; how the children respond, the questions they ask, the attitudes they demonstrate in actual behavior and the way they use Scripture to inform their lives and decisions.
A wide ranges of examples were given from ancient times to the present. The book was exciting in the responses from the children. Anyone who works with children would find this an excellent tool, it has a great bibliography, footnotes, scripture list ---you couldn't ask for more.
It left me with a great sense of hope and urgency to give our teachers and parents great tools.
Imagine the faith journey with children as a pilgrimage or dance with God. Explore the contexts in which children live, make an informed and animated commitment to nurture a vibrant faith in your churchs youngest members. Theory and practice are interwoven ---if your church cares that children matter this is the book for you.Children Matter: Celebrating their Place in the Church, Family and Community Overview

The Creative Family: How to Encourage Imagination and Nurture Family Connections ReviewI thought this was a sweet book, and a pleasant read. Amanda Soule is a wonderful writer. I was a little disappointed that there were no new ideas presented here though. I felt like I was reading the same Waldorf family book I've read several times before. People say "everything has been done before", but I feel that authors can still incorporate new ideas or put their own twist on things. I did not see this here.
I was also disappointed with the craft projects. Aside from the fact that many were the same projects found all over the internet and in many other craft books, I found that most of them were projects geared towards adults with small touches added by children. I was expecting more projects actually for children, or where children played a much bigger role.
I think this would be a perfect book for someone who is new to Waldorf and Montessori philosophy and was looking for ways to incorporate these philosophies into their family life, or for someone who is looking for a simple, pleasant read paired with beautiful pictures. If you've been involved in simple family living for quite some time and are looking for something new, I would look elsewhere. The Creative Family: How to Encourage Imagination and Nurture Family Connections Overview

Healing Is a Choice: 10 Decisions That Will Transform Your Life and 10 Lies That Can Prevent You From Making Them Review
I was not expecting such a thick book when this one arrived from Thomas Nelson publishers. My first thought was that it would take months to get through all the material in the book. However, I have read most of the text and skipped the workbook parts so I feel that I can give a reasonable review.
The book is by well know author, Stephen Arterburn. Some other titles of Mr. Arterburn that you might recognize are Every Young Man's Battle, More Jesus, Less Religion: Moving from rules to relationship, and Every Man's Marriage. The author has a radio ministry and is a popular speaker.
The book is subtitled: 10 Decisions That Will Transform Your Life and 10 Lies That Can Prevent You From Making Them
There are ten chapters that correspond to the 10 decisions and lies. And a final chapter concluding his thoughts on healing wraps everything up. Each chapter has a workbook that is to be completed after reading the chapter. Each workbook includes additional reading, prayers, songs, poems, questions to answer and a few exercises.
On page 186 of the book, the author states, "This book is about healing choices." This really sums up the purpose of the book. Reading this book will not heal people of their problems and the author doesn't intend it to. Reading this book will allow people to see their need for healing and explore why they don't get the help they need. Once they understand their need, then the book helps them to know what the next step should be.
Although I am still a broken vessel, God is gently putting me back together. I am a little ways down the path of healing now, but I can see that if I had read this book in the beginning of my healing journey that it would have been very helpful.
The author speaks very candidly of his own brokenness in the book. He shares openly of his divorce and how it has affected his life. I appreciated his honest approach in getting to the heart of behaviors that seem noble but are really sinful.
I would recommend this book to anyone starting the journey towards healing. Anyone could benefit from the information here, but it is clearly written for Christians.Healing Is a Choice: 10 Decisions That Will Transform Your Life and 10 Lies That Can Prevent You From Making Them Overview

Real Messages From Heaven: And Other True Stories of Miracles, Divine Intervention and Supernatural Occurrences ReviewThis book was not only moving and thought prevoking, it was also an incredibly "easy read". I flew through the pages, because I couldn't wait to find out what was going to happen next and how each story would end. Since each chapter is a true account of a personal story, I caught myself smiling, crying or amazed at how wonderfully God takes such care with each of his children. I highly recommend this book to anyone who struggles with their faith, has lost a loved one or just enjoys hearing about the awesome things that God does for us to remind us that He is with us. It would make a great gift, too!Real Messages From Heaven: And Other True Stories of Miracles, Divine Intervention and Supernatural Occurrences Overview

Parenting with Grace: Catholic Parent's Guide to Raising Almost Perfect Kids ReviewIf you want to do more than: raise an "okay" kid, in a grow-up, get-a-job, basically-decent-person sort of sense, then this book is for you! This book is about raising your children to be all God wants them to be (i.e. SAINTS!) and gives parents very practical suggestions on how to accomplish this. The author also cites numerous writings by our Holy Father and other esteemed Catholics that promote a parenting style in line with the values and ideals of the Catholic Church. This book specifically encourages the idea of attatchment parenting,(in a society that seems to practice de-tatchment parenting),which I found very gratifying since my husband and I try to do that anyway -and again the author cites specific Catholic sources to reinforce this viewpoint.I also think the author's appendix in the back about why he can't spank, and his critical examination of corporal punishment is one of the best Christian arguments against spanking that I have read. I can't say enough about how much I love this book! While the bookstores are stocked with many books on how not to let your children manipulate you (i.e. Babywise and others), and how to make your children fit into your lifestyle(instead of re-arranging yours to put your children first), this book is a refreshing and timely reminder that children are a gift from God and as such, deserve to be parented in a way fitting of their dignity as a human being! I intend to give it as a gift to the Catholic parents that I know. Do yourself a favor and buy one for yourself and one for a friend- they (and their children) will thank you for it!Parenting with Grace: Catholic Parent's Guide to Raising Almost Perfect Kids Overview

The Children of Now: Crystalline Children, Indigo Children, Star Kids, Angels on Earth, and the Phenomenon of Transitional Children ReviewAfter reading this book, I bought 8 copies as holiday gifts for teachers, health care professionals and fellow parents. Some comments from the 9 readers follows:
*** I understand now that my child is not a problem. He has talents and abilities that are different and he has something wonderful to contribute to this changing world.
*** How to create a love of learning in our schools is clear now.
*** We wonder how our children can create life on a planet that is envrionmentally unstable. Within this book is the answer to that question, in the children's own words, and how we can support them as they envision the future.
*** Our children have so much to teach us,now is the time to listen closely. There is great wisdom in their truthful hearts. I began listening as I read those pages. I listen more intently to what my daughter has to say now and I understand the depth of her observations.
*** The children in my classes have absolutely changed over the last 20 years. I had no truthful way of explaining what was occuring until I read this book. Aha!!
*** As a health care provider I've suspected that cronic illness in adults and children is a symptom of a society that is out of truth with itself. The children confirm this and are clearly able to discern the truths that we have forgotten. The outlook for healing ourselves has just gotten infinitely brighter!
*** This book has inspired a new way of interacting with my students that is both practical and creative.
*** I am reading this book again. I am grateful for the beauty of the message and the openheartedness and courage of the messengerThe Children of Now: Crystalline Children, Indigo Children, Star Kids, Angels on Earth, and the Phenomenon of Transitional Children Overview

Think Orange: Imagine the Impact When Church and Family Collide... ReviewMaybe I'm the odd one out: it looks like I'm the first to not give Joiner's book 5 out of 5 stars on Amazon reviews. Although written well enough to be easily accessible and readable, with many good insights and some inspiring stories, there are other books now available which have deeper theological and Biblical grounding for inviting a transformational understanding of children, youth and family ministry for the 21st century.
Joiner mostly uses a traditional, didactic, pedagogic model of youth ministry while citing some creative divergences from traditional archetypes. But, he seems to hesitate in fully partnering with families so that the church's FIRST call is the spiritual development of ADULTS, moms and dads, so that parents have the spiritual maturity, resources and life skills to be the primary faith mentors and companions for their children. For example, his section on "Elevating Community" (p185ff) is written in reference to other significant, committed, adults (beyond parents) that are "used to influence youth" within traditional age-segregated peer group programming in the church. This is a good thing, but Joiner does not take the next step, calling for a cultural-shift model of full, inclusive, intergenerational community, where the WHOLE FAMILY is uplifted, engaged holistically in the life of the church and equipped to be the faith mentors in the home. When Reggie Joiner does write about equipping parents it comes across primarily that the church is the educator for effective parenting versus enabling parents to effectively live in authentic discipleship and embracing children into their daily faithful lives of loving God and others in Christ's name.
As I see it, the full power of FAMILY ministry is when the whole church has ownership to include and embrace youth and children in the full life of the congregation; and parents fully engage their lives in living the Christ-life authentically with their children from day to day. In this sense, Reggie Joiner does not talk about an incarnational walk along side youth as Jesus Christ does with us. Adults are called to be the presence of Jesus alongside their children and the youth of the church: loving, honoring, respecting, and caring for them for Christ's sake and not just as a means to make sure they are influenced to have faith some day.
An incarnational ministry of adults with children is scriptural and powerful. How about even one reference of the church community being the body of Christ for children and families? Where is one reference of the concept or term "mentor"? Was that an intentional omission? How about referring to service as being faithful to the call of Jesus to love one another as I have loved you, and not referring to service as a something to use for the purpose of producing faith?
"Thinking Orange" is a book with creative phrases and gimmicky terms, but I think there is much depth and challenge left out for those who use it as their main reference book for transforming church ministry with children, youth and families.

Preschooler's Busy Book: 365 Creative Games & Activities To Occupy 3-6 Year Olds ReviewI have gotten a lot of use out of the author's book for toddlers, and feared this book might contain too much overlap, but I figured it was worth a few dollars to find out and I was pleasantly surprised. This edition dives into math, reading readiness and more challenging crafts. Kudos to the author, who could have been lazy but wasn't!
The book is nicely organized and the author writes with humor and affection. A chapter of introduction helps you plan, supply and mentally prepare for those long days when you are running out of ideas, and subsequent chapters organized projects into the following sections: Rainy Day Play; Kids in the Kitchen; Outdoor Adventures; Out and About; Reading, Writing, 'Rithmetic and More; Music, Dance and Drama; Arts and Crafts; and Birthdays and Holidays. Most activities are simple to set up, generally using two to four common household items. Appendices list recipes for basic paints, doughs, glues and clay; activities for a Crazy Can (a random drawing setup implementing activities that aren't messy and need little supervision); gifts children can make; best books for young children; and resources. The index lists projects (but not materials, which would be helpful in later editions).
The book subtitle, 365 Creative Games and Activities to Keep Your 3- to 6-Year-Old Busy, says it all. I found quite a few good ideas in this well-organized, friendly guide.Preschooler's Busy Book: 365 Creative Games & Activities To Occupy 3-6 Year Olds Overview

The Everything Kids' Science Experiments Book: Boil Ice, Float Water, Measure Gravity-Challenge the World Around You ReviewThis is a great book, chock-a-block w/ very accessible experiments. One of the best features is the way the experiments are grouped together: a 'theme' (say, Acids, in the Chemistry section) will have a group of experiments of varying degrees of complexity that together add up to a pretty good understanding of the concept. Also, most of the materials are readily at hand- for many of them we really did already have everything in the house. This is esp. gratifying for the kids, who of course want to do the experiment *right now*. I would imagine that home-schooling families would enjoy this, but our school-going kids enjoy doing these experiments after school & on weekends.
p.s., one of the easiest experiments is also a real showstopper, though it takes a couple of days to complete: dissolving the eggshell of an egg, leaving the egg inside intact! The Everything Kids' Science Experiments Book: Boil Ice, Float Water, Measure Gravity-Challenge the World Around You Overview

The Snowy Day/Whistle for Willie DVD & Book Gift Set ReviewThe 2 book and dvd set arrives handsomely boxed and packaged. However, upon opening the original set ordered, I found the book's cover to be covered in a clear plastic film. The film had holes, air bubbles, tears, and seams all over it - front and back. I returned it and another was sent out immediately, full refund, no questions asked. Would have been happy but the next book arrived in the same condition! As a huge fan of Ezra Jack Keats, this book should have been a perfect gift to my local library- the intention of the purchase. However, the book arrived in such an unattractive condition that I simply wrote the library a check so that they could purchase their own copy elsewhere - hopefully with a better cover! As for the novel itself. Keat's timeless stories, The Snowy Day and Whistle for Willy are classically told & portrayed with original artwork. Simple and understated, the author still holds appeal for both young and older readers. The Snowy Day is a story about a little boy's adventures out in the snow. Whistle for Willie shows the joy this same young boy faces when he finally learns to whistle for his dog. The dvd is a nice addition. This author is a must have for any young reader! Would have gotten 5 stars if not for the lousy contact papering job...The Snowy Day/Whistle for Willie DVD & Book Gift Set Overview
