Planting Seeds: Practicing Mindfulness with Children ReviewThis book is a beautiful, practical, and extremely helpful book that anyone interested in introducing children to mindfulness and related practices will greatly appreciate. It was written by the Venerable Thich Nhat Hanh, Vietnamese Zen monk and teacher, and author of many well-known books, including Peace Is Every Step: The Path of Mindfulness in Everyday Life. The book evolved out of his work with children at Plum Village Community, a Buddhist center in Southern France that he co-founded. The book encompasses the work of himself and many of his colleagues at Plum Village, including nuns and monks in-residence, as well as educators and parents that have attended retreats at the center focused on children.
Written for both parents and educators, each chapter of Planting Seeds begins with an overview of a topic, including mindful breathing, meditation, compassion, nature, suffering, healing, age, and death. After the overview, each chapter includes stories, sample activities, and guided meditations that adults can use to explore these themes with children. Many chapters include personal stories from educators and parents that work at Plum Village, or that attended retreats there and then strove to integrate what they learned in their work. They describe their personal experiences - including challenges - introducing children to these activities, in both home and school environments.
Although the themes are all grounded in Buddhism, they are introduced in a way that is non-religious, and so could be used to introduce children of any background to mindfulness. In fact, most of the educators that offer testimonials describe integrating these themes into secular environments, or even religious ones of other persuasions.
The book includes a CD with some of the guided meditations and songs tied to the exercises in the book, including "I Follow My Breath", "Pebble Meditation" and "Deep Relaxation for Young People." Lyrics are included for those songs that have them in the back of book, as well as written overviews of the guided meditations. Four meditation cards corresponding to the four meditations included in the 'Breathing in, Breathing Out' meditation are also in the Appendix.
For example, in the first meditation, the focus is on feeling as fresh and pure as a flower, so the card says:
"Breathing in, I see myself as a flower, a human flower...
Breathing out, I am beautiful just as I am, and I feel very fresh."
Subsequent cards are focused on being solid as a mountain, calm as still water, and free as open space.
Many chapters also include excerpts from Q&A sessions Thich Nhat Hanh did with children involved in these activities. One of my favorites was from a discussion on age and death (Thich Nhat Hanh is referred to as Thay here):
Child's Questions: How old are you?
Thay: Well, how old are you first?
Child: I am six, almost seven.
Thay: Listen, I am going to give you a good answer. I am the continuation of the Buddha, so I am 2,600 years old.
Child: Oh!
Thay: I am also the continuation of my father, so I am 110 years young. I know that you are my continuation and I feel that I am in you, so at the time I am six years old also. That is true, because I have been reborn in that child. He will carry me into the future. So I am quite young. I am six years old. If you look around, you see me a little bit everywhere. I have different ages. Okay?
Overall, this is a beautiful and practical book that any parent or educator (Buddhist or no) will treasure as a guide to introducing children to mindfulness, compassion, and related themes.Planting Seeds: Practicing Mindfulness with Children Overview

Off to First Grade ReviewIf a youngster is feeling trepidation about taking the big step from kindergarten into first grade, here is a cheerfully imagined chronicle of the thoughts and words of 23 students who will be in Mrs. Miller's class at Elm school.
Youngsters are mentioned alphabetically, so we begin with Anna who tells her little brother, Ray that she will bring home a lot of books to read to him. Dee waits for the big yellow bus and hugs his mom good-bye.
Ignacio is not only going to a new school but he's also in a new country. Although he met his teacher and the principal last week he still holds tight to his papa's hand as he practices his English.
Ramon's fifth grade sister puts a blue dot on his right hand so he will remember to turn right not left at the end of Elm school's long hall.
Positive traits are emphasized in the brief experience of each new first grader - from helpfulness, to reassurance to friendship.

Preschooler's Busy Book: 365 Creative Games & Activities To Occupy 3-6 Year Olds ReviewI have gotten a lot of use out of the author's book for toddlers, and feared this book might contain too much overlap, but I figured it was worth a few dollars to find out and I was pleasantly surprised. This edition dives into math, reading readiness and more challenging crafts. Kudos to the author, who could have been lazy but wasn't!
The book is nicely organized and the author writes with humor and affection. A chapter of introduction helps you plan, supply and mentally prepare for those long days when you are running out of ideas, and subsequent chapters organized projects into the following sections: Rainy Day Play; Kids in the Kitchen; Outdoor Adventures; Out and About; Reading, Writing, 'Rithmetic and More; Music, Dance and Drama; Arts and Crafts; and Birthdays and Holidays. Most activities are simple to set up, generally using two to four common household items. Appendices list recipes for basic paints, doughs, glues and clay; activities for a Crazy Can (a random drawing setup implementing activities that aren't messy and need little supervision); gifts children can make; best books for young children; and resources. The index lists projects (but not materials, which would be helpful in later editions).
The book subtitle, 365 Creative Games and Activities to Keep Your 3- to 6-Year-Old Busy, says it all. I found quite a few good ideas in this well-organized, friendly guide.Preschooler's Busy Book: 365 Creative Games & Activities To Occupy 3-6 Year Olds Overview

Science Play: Beginning Discoveries for 2-To-6-Year-Olds (Williamson Little Hands Book) ReviewWe bought "Science Play" not knowing the joy it wouldbring to our three year old. She LOVES this book! We enjoy doing theactivities with her and like that most "supplies needed" are items we have around the house. The activities are easy, fast and interactive so toddlers are kept interested. Another Bonus: No TV or Computer needed -- just Mom or Dads time.Science Play: Beginning Discoveries for 2-To-6-Year-Olds (Williamson Little Hands Book) Overview

I'm a Big Brother ReviewThis updated version, illustrated by Rosalinda Kightley, is better than the original. The original never showed the mother holding the baby whereas the new version does, a couple of times. Neither version shows breastfeeding but the new version cuts back on the bottle feeding at least. My son loves this book and we have tried many. He is 28 months old and most books are too old for him or too detailed to capture his attention. We first borrowed this book from the library, along with all of the others we've tried, and had to buy it after renewing it 3 times. I also like the fact that the book does not address negative feelings the older sibling may have. We'll cross that bridge when we come to it; why give him any ideas? Another great choice on this subject is On Mother's Lap by Ann Herbert Scott. My son also loves the Sesame Street video Three Bears and a New Baby. If you are looking for a parenting book for yourself on this subject, try Welcoming Your Second Baby, by Vicky Lansky or Keys to Preparing and Caring for Your Second Child, by Meg Zweiback. Avoid the book From One Child to Two, by Judy Dunn. Dunn's book was so indecisive and negative, we might not be having another child after reading it if I hadn't already been pregnant.I'm a Big Brother Overview

Yay, You : Moving Out, Moving Up, Moving On ReviewThis is a great book for a new graduate or anyone embarking on a new life style. Even though I'm not thrilled with the spelling of the title I still liked this book enough to give it as a graduation gift. It's short but sweet, and covers just about everything, from careers to friends. I especially love the page where you may choose to ponder your thighs (although men may not relate) and the pages about many friends or only a few or some with a different point of view. The illustrations are adorable (they are definitely what made me take a second look). If your looking for a graduation book other than the old stand-by this could be it for you.Yay, You : Moving Out, Moving Up, Moving On Overview

The Gifts of God, 1st Edition (A Course in Miracles) ReviewHelen Schucman was the "scribe" of A COURSE IN MIRACLES, a three volume set of books about spiritual psychotherapy. These poems were not scribed in the same way as A COURSE IN MIRACLES; but they do dovetail with the spiritual principles of the Course. Some poems were written for specific people, among them: Kenneth Wapnick, President of "Foundation for A Course In Miracles"; Gerald Jampolsky, author of LOVE IS LETTING GO OF FEAR; William Thetford, co-scribe of A COURSE IN MIRACLES. Others are simply poems about the abstract nature of the Course, and the Course's reinterpretation of Christian themes. For information on which poems pertain to which people, see ABSENCE FROM FELICITY, Dr. Wapnick's biography of Helen Schucman.
The student of the Course will be interested to know that THE GIFTS OF GOD ends with 14 pages of material that *was* received from the same process of inner dictation that brought the Course. That section is divided into five sections: "The Dream of Fear," "The Two Gifts," "The Ending of the Dream," "Our Gifts to God," and "The Father's Love."
Since I am a student of the Course, I am biased: I think THE GIFTS OF GOD is beautiful and would recommend it to any student of the Course or lover of poetry. The Gifts of God, 1st Edition (A Course in Miracles) Overview

The Everything Kids' Science Experiments Book: Boil Ice, Float Water, Measure Gravity-Challenge the World Around You ReviewThis is a great book, chock-a-block w/ very accessible experiments. One of the best features is the way the experiments are grouped together: a 'theme' (say, Acids, in the Chemistry section) will have a group of experiments of varying degrees of complexity that together add up to a pretty good understanding of the concept. Also, most of the materials are readily at hand- for many of them we really did already have everything in the house. This is esp. gratifying for the kids, who of course want to do the experiment *right now*. I would imagine that home-schooling families would enjoy this, but our school-going kids enjoy doing these experiments after school & on weekends.
p.s., one of the easiest experiments is also a real showstopper, though it takes a couple of days to complete: dissolving the eggshell of an egg, leaving the egg inside intact! The Everything Kids' Science Experiments Book: Boil Ice, Float Water, Measure Gravity-Challenge the World Around You Overview

The Snowy Day/Whistle for Willie DVD & Book Gift Set ReviewThe 2 book and dvd set arrives handsomely boxed and packaged. However, upon opening the original set ordered, I found the book's cover to be covered in a clear plastic film. The film had holes, air bubbles, tears, and seams all over it - front and back. I returned it and another was sent out immediately, full refund, no questions asked. Would have been happy but the next book arrived in the same condition! As a huge fan of Ezra Jack Keats, this book should have been a perfect gift to my local library- the intention of the purchase. However, the book arrived in such an unattractive condition that I simply wrote the library a check so that they could purchase their own copy elsewhere - hopefully with a better cover! As for the novel itself. Keat's timeless stories, The Snowy Day and Whistle for Willy are classically told & portrayed with original artwork. Simple and understated, the author still holds appeal for both young and older readers. The Snowy Day is a story about a little boy's adventures out in the snow. Whistle for Willie shows the joy this same young boy faces when he finally learns to whistle for his dog. The dvd is a nice addition. This author is a must have for any young reader! Would have gotten 5 stars if not for the lousy contact papering job...The Snowy Day/Whistle for Willie DVD & Book Gift Set Overview

The Gift of ADHD Activity Book: 101 Ways to Turn Your Child's Problems into Strengths (Companion Companion) ReviewThis book was a surprise. I hadn't read the one that came before it "the gift of ADHD" but I will now. The author gently encourages compassion and understanding of these difficult to raise children. Many of the "games" are informal ways to link with your kid by working their strengths. The first part of the book suggests you make a list of what is right with your kid. When I did this I realized just how fascinating he really is. I am starting to turn around my focus from problem oriented to strength oriented. Quite a change.
The activities are not for just one age group. The author discusses one and suggests adaptations for different ages. Also suggests variations depending on your child's interests. The best part is the author's understanding the difficulties of raising an ADHD kid, the problems parents encounter and the potential for turning things around to benefit your kid. It is easy to read clear and insightful. It is organized in a way so you can pick one aspect and work on those activities. You don't have to read cover to cover to start using the techniques.
I recommend this book. The Gift of ADHD Activity Book: 101 Ways to Turn Your Child's Problems into Strengths (Companion Companion) Overview

Going on a Plane (First Experiences) ReviewThis children's book is probably the best book that can be given to any child who is hestitant about riding in an airplane.
It features the processes that are involved in airplane travel. It begins with the introduction of the family, suitably named The Tripps, and how to go about getting the tickets, weighing and scanning the luggage and what occurs once inside the plane.
The comical pictures like when the family is smiling as they're listening to music on earphones and when Mr. Tripp tries to grab the luggage at the baggage carousel, sets the tone for how exciting airplane travel can be.
