Chicken Soup for the Soul: Twins and More: 101 Stories Celebrating Double Trouble and Multiple Blessings (Chicken Soup for the Soul (Quality Paper)) ReviewI'm a mom of twin daughters so when I saw this, I immediately picked it up. I've read at least 3 other chicken soup books and LOVED them, so maybe I just had high expectations? I didn't find any of these stories particularly touching or inspirational. I'm not sure if i'm just incredibly lucky not to have any twin horror stories but I could not relate to most of the people in the book. I was just not impressed.
It might be a better read for a grandparent or someone else related to a twin, not a mom.Chicken Soup for the Soul: Twins and More: 101 Stories Celebrating Double Trouble and Multiple Blessings (Chicken Soup for the Soul (Quality Paper)) Overview

Planting Seeds: Practicing Mindfulness with Children ReviewThis book is a beautiful, practical, and extremely helpful book that anyone interested in introducing children to mindfulness and related practices will greatly appreciate. It was written by the Venerable Thich Nhat Hanh, Vietnamese Zen monk and teacher, and author of many well-known books, including Peace Is Every Step: The Path of Mindfulness in Everyday Life. The book evolved out of his work with children at Plum Village Community, a Buddhist center in Southern France that he co-founded. The book encompasses the work of himself and many of his colleagues at Plum Village, including nuns and monks in-residence, as well as educators and parents that have attended retreats at the center focused on children.
Written for both parents and educators, each chapter of Planting Seeds begins with an overview of a topic, including mindful breathing, meditation, compassion, nature, suffering, healing, age, and death. After the overview, each chapter includes stories, sample activities, and guided meditations that adults can use to explore these themes with children. Many chapters include personal stories from educators and parents that work at Plum Village, or that attended retreats there and then strove to integrate what they learned in their work. They describe their personal experiences - including challenges - introducing children to these activities, in both home and school environments.
Although the themes are all grounded in Buddhism, they are introduced in a way that is non-religious, and so could be used to introduce children of any background to mindfulness. In fact, most of the educators that offer testimonials describe integrating these themes into secular environments, or even religious ones of other persuasions.
The book includes a CD with some of the guided meditations and songs tied to the exercises in the book, including "I Follow My Breath", "Pebble Meditation" and "Deep Relaxation for Young People." Lyrics are included for those songs that have them in the back of book, as well as written overviews of the guided meditations. Four meditation cards corresponding to the four meditations included in the 'Breathing in, Breathing Out' meditation are also in the Appendix.
For example, in the first meditation, the focus is on feeling as fresh and pure as a flower, so the card says:
"Breathing in, I see myself as a flower, a human flower...
Breathing out, I am beautiful just as I am, and I feel very fresh."
Subsequent cards are focused on being solid as a mountain, calm as still water, and free as open space.
Many chapters also include excerpts from Q&A sessions Thich Nhat Hanh did with children involved in these activities. One of my favorites was from a discussion on age and death (Thich Nhat Hanh is referred to as Thay here):
Child's Questions: How old are you?
Thay: Well, how old are you first?
Child: I am six, almost seven.
Thay: Listen, I am going to give you a good answer. I am the continuation of the Buddha, so I am 2,600 years old.
Child: Oh!
Thay: I am also the continuation of my father, so I am 110 years young. I know that you are my continuation and I feel that I am in you, so at the time I am six years old also. That is true, because I have been reborn in that child. He will carry me into the future. So I am quite young. I am six years old. If you look around, you see me a little bit everywhere. I have different ages. Okay?
Overall, this is a beautiful and practical book that any parent or educator (Buddhist or no) will treasure as a guide to introducing children to mindfulness, compassion, and related themes.Planting Seeds: Practicing Mindfulness with Children Overview

How to Hit a Curveball, Grill the Perfect Steak, and Become a Real Man: Learning What Our Fathers Never Taught Us ReviewThe authors have succinctly articulated the essence of Christian masculinity, and have shared experiences about their marriages and parenting that largely "ring true" to me personally. Their thoughts about work and the responsibility of providing for one's own correctly captures the dichotomy of responsibility vs. personal fulfillment, and the integral part personal sacrifice and service to others play in being a "real man". While they don't get it 100% right (why should they?--the rest of us have been struggling with these issues for years and don't have it right either), they bring voice to feelings and truths most men need to confront in their lives. I wish I'd read this book 30 years ago.How to Hit a Curveball, Grill the Perfect Steak, and Become a Real Man: Learning What Our Fathers Never Taught Us Overview

Teach Like Your Hair's on Fire: The Methods and Madness Inside Room 56 ReviewDuring our teaching careers, most of us have experienced a few "Ah-ha" moments. For Rafe Esquith, his wake-up call was literally when his hair caught on fire during a science experiment. Why was he the last one in the class to realize his head was ablaze - because he had inadvertently reached classroom nirvana.
I think of it as being in the zone, Esquith labels it "ignoring the crap," either way, this gifted teacher had a transcendental moment that altered his educational philosophy forever and his influence is rapidly spreading into classrooms across the globe. Part quixotic and possibly part "mad," he has transformed his 5th grade class, of mainly ESL students, into Shakespeare-quoting individuals who have learned how to take charge of their own learning.
Esquith's book challenges such issues as the obsession with high-stakes testing, unresponsive administrators, ineffective professional development opportunities, and the "demons" that take away our energy and spirit. At the heart of his "cookbook" is getting students to take responsibility for their actions and to value failure as an integral part of the learning process.
Check out this book because it explores the realities of teaching difficult students, as opposed to your typical educational log of impractical theories. Pick up this book if you agree with his classroom motto of, "Be nice, work hard. There are no shortcuts." Finally, purchase this book if the biggest fear for your students is that they become ordinary.
Lastly, what really motivated me to buy this book was that Esquith hasn't been lured out of the classroom. Instead, he continues to embrace his mission of finding the different keys it takes to ignite each of his students.

Soul to Soul Parenting: A Guide to Raising a Spiritually Conscious Family ReviewBased on the other reviews, it's clear this book has many fans already (of which I am now one), so I'll try and provide some additional detail about the book that may help you decide if it's right for you and your family.
The main audience for this book is parents who consider themselves spiritual, but are not necessarily religiously affiliated. However, because the book is organized around general spiritual themes that are valued in many religions, I feel there is also a lot of material here that any parent could draw from, including religiously affiliated ones (and atheist/agnostic parents as well, for that matter.) The key is selecting approaches that work for you and your family, and the author stresses this continually - that a spiritually conscious family doesn't look one way or talk one way.
The book is organized around two main sections - Vehicles and Themes. The Vehicles are ideas for places, times and ways to integrate spiritual themes into your daily life as a family. Examples are family discussions, family rituals, vision boards, role play, art projects, or, my personal favorite 'make-her-day moments'. Some are formal and some are more casual. The Themes are values or topics that you can explore with your family, such as connectedness, authenticity, gratitude, cause/effect/free Will, mindfulness and more.
The vehicles and themes provide a framework for you to consider how best to integrate spirituality into your family life. I lean more towards a very unstructured approach - modeling being front and center - and I also have read a lot of 'mindful parenting' type books, so I initially wasn't sure how much I would get out of this one. But I found this really gave me a lot of new ideas, and inspired me to become more conscious in the way I am integrating spirituality into our lives, especially as my children grow older.
One of the things I especially appreciated was the book, movie and music suggestions, corresponding to each theme for both children and adults. The appendix also lists all the suggestions in list form, and the children's spiritual book list is probably one of the most comprehensive I have seen. I also appreciated many of the author's personal sharings about her spiritual path and family.
A note on language: The spiritual language of this book is very much in the vein of Eckhart Tolle (Power of Now, New Earth), Neale Donald Walsch (Conversations with God), and Esther and Jerry Hicks (Law of Attraction teachings). Although I have read all these authors and appreciate them, in general my own language tends to be more Buddhist in nature, but I didn't feel that was a problem here. The author is very flexible in her spiritual terms, and stresses the importance of finding a language that works for you, so if you can read past the terms, into the universal themes, I think it has a lot to offer anyone.Soul to Soul Parenting: A Guide to Raising a Spiritually Conscious Family Overview

The Blessing ReviewIf you have a difficult time consistently being sensitive to your spouse, children, relatives, and friends, this is a must read. Smalley and Trent masterfully tie Christian values to modern psychology. The attributes of "meaningful touch, spoken message, expressing high value, special future and active commitment" are the elements that we see in the gospels that impress us about Christ the most. These attributes also tend to be the most difficult to maintain in character. The book helps us to see that how we were raised has an ABSOLUTE influence on how we are today, without blameshifting the responsibility on our family. This helps the reader not wane between psychology and faith where in most cases, the tendency is to blame it all on the past or to ignore and bear it. As a minister, I have recommended this book to my congregation. It will change not just the outward action of love towards those closest to you, but it will change the internal motive, which is what every reader desires the most. The best thing about the blessing, is that it hits home (your childhood), and helps it (your home) get built on right foundations.
This is my 3rd purchase of it. If you want to receive and be a blessing, order now!!The Blessing Overview

Children Matter: Celebrating their Place in the Church, Family and Community ReviewAlthough this book is written by a group of educators it is one of the best books I have ever read on children's spirituality and show us with many examples how the faith community can nurture its youngest members. Children Matter emphasized relationships between people and encourages the church to welcome all children as valued participants in the people of God.
A wide range of examples from the Protestant traditions and drawing on the Bible, history and psychology to lay good foundations. The examples were excellent and evualated with strengths and weaknesses for all ages from toddler through grade school. The evidence of teaching is learning; how the children respond, the questions they ask, the attitudes they demonstrate in actual behavior and the way they use Scripture to inform their lives and decisions.
A wide ranges of examples were given from ancient times to the present. The book was exciting in the responses from the children. Anyone who works with children would find this an excellent tool, it has a great bibliography, footnotes, scripture list ---you couldn't ask for more.
It left me with a great sense of hope and urgency to give our teachers and parents great tools.
Imagine the faith journey with children as a pilgrimage or dance with God. Explore the contexts in which children live, make an informed and animated commitment to nurture a vibrant faith in your churchs youngest members. Theory and practice are interwoven ---if your church cares that children matter this is the book for you.Children Matter: Celebrating their Place in the Church, Family and Community Overview

Parenting With Grace ReviewThis book is an outstanding resource for Catholic parents. If you are someone who takes your faith and your vocation as a parent seriously, then you will be thrilled to have this wonderful guiding light as part of your collection. My wife and I found that we were already using some of the practices found in this book, but also learned several new concepts that we have decided to incorporate into our parenting. Faith Begins at Home: The Family Makeover with Christ at the Center ReviewDecember 03, 2007
Thoughts from Lou Ann
From The Willow Creek Association Children's Blog
I just read a great book by Mark Holmen.
Building Faith at Home is one of those rare books that not only challenges the way we do ministry, but actually suggests some practical steps to change our church culture - one family at a time.
We know the statistics. We've read Barna; we've been to conferences; we've seen the results of drop-off children's ministry. We're all praying, thinking and dialoging about how to make our ministries more effective and turn the statistics around, and yet - change is painfully slow. Parents still seem apathetic when it comes to assuming responsibility for the faith of their children. In the minds of Christian parents, they're leaving the process of their children's spiritual formation to the professionals - after all, it works with piano lessons, soccer and calculus!
I am determined that things will be different for the kids in my church. I am determined that my kids will have every opportunity to accept Jesus as Savior; I am determined that my kids will become fully devoted followers of Jesus; I am determined that my kids will not walk away from their faith and church when they leave home for college.
That's why I'm so excited about Holmen's book. Holmen advocates taking a different avenue to family ministry. Just as many churches have adopted the phrase, "a church OF small groups" rather than "a church WITH small groups," we must become a church OF family ministry. We must "focus on the home as the primary place for nurturing faith." Everything we do at church - small groups, men's ministry, Bible studies - even sermons - must equip the family to live out their faith at home. And here's where the book gets practical. Already having child dedication Sundays? Meet with the parents of these young children and teach them how to pray over their babies. Already honoring your high school graduates? Use this as an opportunity to equip their parents to prepare their kids for the test of faith called "college."
Holmen suggests having annual "Take It Home" events for every age group - and these events are held on Sunday when families are already at church! Why didn't I think of that? Once a year, parents join their child's small group for a "Take It Home" event. And here's another good idea - with every event, you send home a tool to reinforce your topic.
Strategic curriculum, family productions, family newsletters, making children's ministry the best hour of a kid's week, and now Take It Home - we might just have an impact that can change lives!

Heaven on Earth: A Handbook for Parents of Young Children ReviewAs a new mom (my son is now 1 year old), I was searching for information on how to raise a child in todays overly technological society. The first book about raising children that I read was "You Are Your Child's First Teacher," by Baldwin Dancy. I found this book to be very difficult to read, and I wanted more how to apply the information instead of so much theory.
The next book was "Beyond the Rainbow Bridge, Nurturing our Children from Birth to Seven," by Patterson, Bradley & Riordan. This was a great intro to Waldorf style parenting. It was a quick, easy read with a lot of good information, but again it left me wanting to know more about how to implement the ideas of fesivals & rhythms.
I finally purchased "Heaven on Earth" (recommended by a Waldorf kindergarten teacher at a parenting meeting I went to), and I finally found what I'm looking for. This book has the theory, talks about how children learn, is easy to read, and has all the how to information I was looking for. She gives the elements of festivals, then goes step by step through a few sample festivals, including a fall apple festival and an Easter festival (which I plan to do this year).
She talks about toys, gives sample stories to tell children at different ages, talks about discipline, rhythms, how to set up an indoor play space and how to set up an outdoor play space, how to incorporate children into your daily chores and much more.
It would be very difficult to incorporate everything she talks about in this book, but it's easy to pick and choose a few things you want to improve or change. I knew I wanted to do some annual festivals, but had no idea where to start. I love her ideas for children's birthdays, Christmas and Easter.
Perhaps the most important and useful feature of this book is the appendix. Here you can find websites and sources for children's natural toys & dolls, art & craft supplies, wool longjohns, cloth diapers, organic skin care and much more. She also includes a pattern to make a simple doll.
I would highly recommend this to any parent of children under the age of 7.Heaven on Earth: A Handbook for Parents of Young Children Overview

The Creative Family: How to Encourage Imagination and Nurture Family Connections ReviewI thought this was a sweet book, and a pleasant read. Amanda Soule is a wonderful writer. I was a little disappointed that there were no new ideas presented here though. I felt like I was reading the same Waldorf family book I've read several times before. People say "everything has been done before", but I feel that authors can still incorporate new ideas or put their own twist on things. I did not see this here.
I was also disappointed with the craft projects. Aside from the fact that many were the same projects found all over the internet and in many other craft books, I found that most of them were projects geared towards adults with small touches added by children. I was expecting more projects actually for children, or where children played a much bigger role.
I think this would be a perfect book for someone who is new to Waldorf and Montessori philosophy and was looking for ways to incorporate these philosophies into their family life, or for someone who is looking for a simple, pleasant read paired with beautiful pictures. If you've been involved in simple family living for quite some time and are looking for something new, I would look elsewhere. The Creative Family: How to Encourage Imagination and Nurture Family Connections Overview

Parenting with Grace: Catholic Parent's Guide to Raising Almost Perfect Kids ReviewIf you want to do more than: raise an "okay" kid, in a grow-up, get-a-job, basically-decent-person sort of sense, then this book is for you! This book is about raising your children to be all God wants them to be (i.e. SAINTS!) and gives parents very practical suggestions on how to accomplish this. The author also cites numerous writings by our Holy Father and other esteemed Catholics that promote a parenting style in line with the values and ideals of the Catholic Church. This book specifically encourages the idea of attatchment parenting,(in a society that seems to practice de-tatchment parenting),which I found very gratifying since my husband and I try to do that anyway -and again the author cites specific Catholic sources to reinforce this viewpoint.I also think the author's appendix in the back about why he can't spank, and his critical examination of corporal punishment is one of the best Christian arguments against spanking that I have read. I can't say enough about how much I love this book! While the bookstores are stocked with many books on how not to let your children manipulate you (i.e. Babywise and others), and how to make your children fit into your lifestyle(instead of re-arranging yours to put your children first), this book is a refreshing and timely reminder that children are a gift from God and as such, deserve to be parented in a way fitting of their dignity as a human being! I intend to give it as a gift to the Catholic parents that I know. Do yourself a favor and buy one for yourself and one for a friend- they (and their children) will thank you for it!Parenting with Grace: Catholic Parent's Guide to Raising Almost Perfect Kids Overview

The Children of Now: Crystalline Children, Indigo Children, Star Kids, Angels on Earth, and the Phenomenon of Transitional Children ReviewAfter reading this book, I bought 8 copies as holiday gifts for teachers, health care professionals and fellow parents. Some comments from the 9 readers follows:
*** I understand now that my child is not a problem. He has talents and abilities that are different and he has something wonderful to contribute to this changing world.
*** How to create a love of learning in our schools is clear now.
*** We wonder how our children can create life on a planet that is envrionmentally unstable. Within this book is the answer to that question, in the children's own words, and how we can support them as they envision the future.
*** Our children have so much to teach us,now is the time to listen closely. There is great wisdom in their truthful hearts. I began listening as I read those pages. I listen more intently to what my daughter has to say now and I understand the depth of her observations.
*** The children in my classes have absolutely changed over the last 20 years. I had no truthful way of explaining what was occuring until I read this book. Aha!!
*** As a health care provider I've suspected that cronic illness in adults and children is a symptom of a society that is out of truth with itself. The children confirm this and are clearly able to discern the truths that we have forgotten. The outlook for healing ourselves has just gotten infinitely brighter!
*** This book has inspired a new way of interacting with my students that is both practical and creative.
*** I am reading this book again. I am grateful for the beauty of the message and the openheartedness and courage of the messengerThe Children of Now: Crystalline Children, Indigo Children, Star Kids, Angels on Earth, and the Phenomenon of Transitional Children Overview

You're Not the Boss of Me: Brat-proofing Your Four- to Twelve-Year-Old Child ReviewI absolutely love this book and have been awaiting the release - well, I have not been disappointed! Betsy's advice in this book is consistent and right-on, as was her guidance from her first book. It's such a pleasure to have books that speak to the current challenges of parenting and give no-nonsense, straight forward advice as well as specific scenarios and scripts. Not only have I continually used her previous book for my personal parenting challenges, but repeatedly recommend it to my clients as well. The same is absolutely true of "You're Not the Boss..." I immediately flipped to the chapter of my current challenge and will at some point devour every page. Once again, I will be using this book for my own guidance and professionally as well. Mothers Who Cry in the Night: The Ultimate Gift of Love Review"Mothers who cry in the night" is a phenomenal read. It starts as a journal, looking for answers to the confusing enigma that is her child. As the answers make themselves known, so does the free spirit that is Bennett. We, the readers, take a swirling ride that is not only in the life of Betsie the adoring, saddened mother but also that of Bennett, a life-force uncomfortable in these earthly surroundings, searching for his own reality, his propose. It not only helped me to have a better understanding of the correlation between genius and addiction (self medicating), but also to better understand my own purpose in this life and what will come after. We are all the same journey and it has no conclusion, only growth.

The Virgin Diaries ReviewWhat makes this book particularly interesting is that the anonymity allows the male contributors to unselfconsciously share their true feelings about how, when, and to whom they chose to lose their virginity.
If the men in this book are any indication, there is a decent percentage of men who are in touch with their own feelings and genuinely care about their partners' feelings as well. In this sense, the stories were not at all what I expected and a truly welcome surprise. A great read people of almost all ages

Parenting From Your Heart: Sharing the Gifts of Compassion, Connection, and Choice (Nonviolent Communication Guides) ReviewThis book follows the methods described in Marshall Rosenberg's book about non-violent communication. I highly recommend this book for parents even if you have not yet read the Rosenberg book. The book is short (43 pages), yet it clearly describes the application of the non-violent communication technique to communicate, motivate and develop mutually empathic relationship with your child. It is a win-win relatiohship where the feelings and the needs of both the child and the adult are met without the use of the emotional blackmail of shame, guilt, blame or rewards. Inbal Kashtan described the communication method with lots of examples and exercises after each chapter so you can practice and reinforce the method. Incorporating this simple but powerful method of communciation between a child and a parent allows the child to develop self motivation, the ability to express feelings and needs and empthatically connect to self and others even in an emotionally charged environment. Its something we all strive for and special gift that you can give and share with your child.Parenting From Your Heart: Sharing the Gifts of Compassion, Connection, and Choice (Nonviolent Communication Guides) Overview

The Gift of ADHD Activity Book: 101 Ways to Turn Your Child's Problems into Strengths (Companion Companion) ReviewThis book was a surprise. I hadn't read the one that came before it "the gift of ADHD" but I will now. The author gently encourages compassion and understanding of these difficult to raise children. Many of the "games" are informal ways to link with your kid by working their strengths. The first part of the book suggests you make a list of what is right with your kid. When I did this I realized just how fascinating he really is. I am starting to turn around my focus from problem oriented to strength oriented. Quite a change.
The activities are not for just one age group. The author discusses one and suggests adaptations for different ages. Also suggests variations depending on your child's interests. The best part is the author's understanding the difficulties of raising an ADHD kid, the problems parents encounter and the potential for turning things around to benefit your kid. It is easy to read clear and insightful. It is organized in a way so you can pick one aspect and work on those activities. You don't have to read cover to cover to start using the techniques.
I recommend this book. The Gift of ADHD Activity Book: 101 Ways to Turn Your Child's Problems into Strengths (Companion Companion) Overview
