The Companion to the Book of Common Worship ReviewStudents of (and pastors within) the Reformed tradition will find this a terrific resource for thinking about how to use the Book of Common Worship. As anyone who has ever planned a service knows all too well, it's never as simple as "turn to page 36 and start reading." Even the most "by the book" event requires a lot of decisions on the part of the pastor -- things that the congregation never thinks about, such as when to raise your hands and what gestures to make during Communion. That is, people may not think about them consciously, and yet, they'll know something is missing or incorrect when the pastor simply omits those gestures...or freestyles them. And the service will lose something important, if intangible. Other Christian denominations, from the "liturgical traditions" have many resources explaining what, how and why, and they are all wonderful in their own way. Unfortunately, these are only somewhat helpful for those of us in other branches of Christianity...there are some things we just do differently. And yet, aside from the "Directory for Worship" of the PCUSA and the RCA, for example, there isn't much guidance. That is why this book is so important. It is well-written, very practical, theologically grounded, and Reformed with a capital R. A great resource. The Companion to the Book of Common Worship Overview

Being Presbyterian in the Bible Belt: A Theological Survival Guide for Youth, Parents, & Other Confused Presbyterians ReviewThis is a much needed book and can be read with profit by those of us in the Bible Belt. As a Presbyterian married to a Southern Baptist, I found the book most enjoyable (hee, hee!). In Southern fundamentalism, there is a strong tendency to promote the totally wrong idea that if one does not know the date and hour of one's salvation, then one is not truly saved. This is characteristic of the teachings of prominent Southern Baptist evengelists such as Bailey Smith and Kelly Green. The authors do a good job of explaining why this approach is not biblical.
The authors are to be commended in their strong stance that salvation is all of God's grace. However, they display a seemingly weak view of scripture, and thus put themselves at odds with the many Presbyterians (both living and dead) who hold/held to the inerrancy and infalibility of the Bible. Among the living are R.C. Sproul, D.James Kennedy,Gordon Clark,Edmund Clowney, W. Robert Godfrey, Sinclair Ferguson, etc. Among the deceased are Charles Hodge, A.A. Hodge, R.L. Dabney, James Montgomery Boice, etc. The authors seem to give the impression that evangelicals and fundamentalists can be lumped together, which is not the case at all. I have found that there are many evangelicals in the membership of the Presbyterian Church, USA, who believe that the Bible is the inerrant, infalible word of God, yet do not hold to a literal interpretation of highly symbolic books such as Revelation and Ezekiel.
As a member of the PCUSA, I enjoyed this book, subject to the above cautions.Being Presbyterian in the Bible Belt: A Theological Survival Guide for Youth, Parents, & Other Confused Presbyterians Overview

Spiritual Leadership for Church Officers: A Handbook ReviewEspecially for those in the Reformed branch of Christianity, this book is a fine guide for church officers. Its author, Joan Gray, says there are two kinds of congregations, those who row the boat and those who sail the boat. Spiritual Leadership for Church Officers helps leaders to discern and catch the wind (the Holy Spirit, of course) in the church's sails by making decisions on what God wants for the church, and God's will for the world. A great ancient/modern concept, very biblical. The book is both practical and inspirational -- and greatly needed. Highly recommended.Spiritual Leadership for Church Officers: A Handbook Overview
