What on Earth is Glory: A Practical Approach to a Glory-filled Life ReviewWe are glory carriers!
There is glory in all of us and around all of us.
The game changer is how we define glory and what we know about glory. These two things will in part determine the direction of our lives.
These are statements that give the overarching thoughts of Paul Manwaring's new book entitled, What on Earth is Glory? Paul Manwaring gives 17 jam-packed chapters of insight into what glory really is - and how we see it lived out in the Bible and here on earth today.
The basic structure of the book goes a little something like this. He defines glory as the eternal value that someone or something has because it reveals, points to, and reflects the attributes, nature, and power of God. Throughout each chapter we, the reader, are given countless examples of areas where we can grow in our knowledge of the glory of God. Some examples are: being glorious sons & daughters, the glory of relationships, beauty & glory, honor & glory, shekinah glory, glory & goverment - and well...you get the point, Manwaring does not leave you lacking on approaches towards understanding glory.
Perhaps what gives you the best perspective of what this book is about is to point you to Chapter 16 where Manwaring says, "One of my chief reasons for writing this book is to bring more definition to the nature of glory, whilst also liberating glory from the confines of church buildings, Heaven in the future, or any of the other limits we like to put on it." Each of these topics he delves into throughout the course of the book and after having finished it, I would say he accomplished those two goals in a most honorable fashion.
One thing I really appreciate about the book is how he incorporates writings from his father, as well as his sons in the spirit of letting three generations of Manwaring's speak on this topic of glory. Bethel Church models well the biblical mandate/opportunity of passing on our faith from one generation to the next - and thus I am not surprised to see this modeled in What on Earth is Glory? You too will enjoy this aspect.
In reflecting on this book, I would definitely recommend it to you whether you are a pastor, missionary, or lay member of the church. Ultimately, I am taking away two main things: 1) a variety of nuggets of truth on the subject of glory, and 2) an expanded knowledge about different instances of glory from the Word, both of which I hope to let challenge me and shape me for the days to come. Teach Like Your Hair's on Fire: The Methods and Madness Inside Room 56 ReviewDuring our teaching careers, most of us have experienced a few "Ah-ha" moments. For Rafe Esquith, his wake-up call was literally when his hair caught on fire during a science experiment. Why was he the last one in the class to realize his head was ablaze - because he had inadvertently reached classroom nirvana.
I think of it as being in the zone, Esquith labels it "ignoring the crap," either way, this gifted teacher had a transcendental moment that altered his educational philosophy forever and his influence is rapidly spreading into classrooms across the globe. Part quixotic and possibly part "mad," he has transformed his 5th grade class, of mainly ESL students, into Shakespeare-quoting individuals who have learned how to take charge of their own learning.
Esquith's book challenges such issues as the obsession with high-stakes testing, unresponsive administrators, ineffective professional development opportunities, and the "demons" that take away our energy and spirit. At the heart of his "cookbook" is getting students to take responsibility for their actions and to value failure as an integral part of the learning process.
Check out this book because it explores the realities of teaching difficult students, as opposed to your typical educational log of impractical theories. Pick up this book if you agree with his classroom motto of, "Be nice, work hard. There are no shortcuts." Finally, purchase this book if the biggest fear for your students is that they become ordinary.
Lastly, what really motivated me to buy this book was that Esquith hasn't been lured out of the classroom. Instead, he continues to embrace his mission of finding the different keys it takes to ignite each of his students.

Son Rise: The Miracle Continues ReviewAs you read all the reviews of this book here, I suggest you take a moment to mentally classify the reviewers into two categories: (1) parents who decided after reading this book to adopt the Son-Rise method for their autistic children, and (2) everybody else.
You'll notice a clear difference - the parents are all UNANIMOUS in their approval of this book and the program, while the rest offer a mixed bag - some approval, sure, but a lot of criticism, cynicism, condescension, outright ridicule, and some cheap shots. All are personal viewpoints, and therefore equally valid perspectives. But if you're reading this book not as a literary exercise, but in search of an effective way to help your child, that difference should send you a crystal-clear message.
My personal viewpoint: I picked up this book almost three years ago (6 months after having had my son diagnosed with autism), and I finished it in one sitting (ending well past midnight). Within a day or two my wife and I called the Institute, signed up for their training program and haven't looked back since. Our son, who was totally non-verbal at age 3, now has a large & growing vocabulary, speaks in 5-10 word sentences, and is interacting socially, learning freely and living joyfully. And along the way, it has also transformed our family's experience of life. Not that I was the New Age type - I'm an engineer, the skeptical, numbers-guy kind. Thank goodness I could recognize the genuine article when I see it. I don't care if Son-Rise doesn't quote the statistics some people demand - my son is the only statistic I need.
The difference between the perspectives of a player on the field and a spectator in the stands can be seen in the following quotes from Rivkah McCaby's review:
*"Imitation Therapy" - if this is a reference to the practice of `joining', it reflects a very shallow understanding of this foundational pillar of the Son-Rise method.
*"Their institute is the temple of a personality cult": Oh, come on! Somebody who has spent a week there wouldn't be saying this.
*"This isn't going to be very helpful to most 21st century families looking for help with an autistic child ...", "... most parents today don't have the time and money the Kaufmans had, but they do have the resources of public funding, Medicaid, and established programs ...", "... but love is not the reason this therapy works...": Maybe these statements are true and maybe they aren't, but who would know better than someone running a Son-Rise program for their child?Son Rise: The Miracle Continues Overview

The Ultimate Life (The Ultimate Series #2) ReviewIf you read The Ultimate Gift, don't waste your time reading The Ultimate Life. I hate to start a review with a negative statement like that, but The Ultimate Life was such a disappointment after reading the first book (and watching the movie). Stovall knew he had a good thing in The Ultimate Gift, so he went back and tried to dip the proverbial bucket in the well - this time it came up dry. Oh, and by the way, this isn't a sequel to the first BOOK...it's a sequel to the movie, so if you read The Ultimate Gift but didn't see the movie, Stovall has changed some characters in this book to correlate to the movie.
In The Ultimate Life, young Jason Stevens is now on trial with his family suing for the billions that Red Stevens bequeathed to young Jason through his will in The Ultimate Gift. The various trials that Jason had to endure to learn life's most valuable lessons, he now has to reiterate and rehash to demonstrate that he, indeed, learned those lessons to the satisfaction of Judge Davis. The story is told through the eyes of Judge Davis and the attempt is made to add suspense and intrigue into the most obvious, least surprising story ever written. Young Jason wins the case, keeps the money, makes a magnanimous gesture to his "family" so they are able to keep their millions and gets married to his wonderful fiancé Alexia (again, from the movie, not the first book) and rides off into the sunset - okay, they don't ride off into the sunset - I guess that was the only thing too cheesy for Stovall in this book.The Ultimate Life (The Ultimate Series #2) Overview

For over a decade, Marianne Williamson has been teaching principles from A Course In Miracles (ACIM)--a channeled psycho-spiritual self-study work which shows individuals how to create miracles by surrendering to love. Some scoff at the notion that "love is the answer", but Williamson answers them by saying: "It's amazing how much ridicule the topic of love can attract when it does anything other than support the status quo." Make no mistake: Williamson does not advocate what I call "sloppy agape". Rather, she boldly challenges humanity to start getting with the Divine program and begin to change from the inside out.
In her new book The Gift Of Change - Spiritual Guidance For A Radically New Life , Williamson sounds a clarion call that now is the time to begin to look within for change. Attempting to change the external world, she asserts, is akin to trying to change a movie by altering the screen when dealing with the projector is what's needed. Saying "hidden beliefs are dangerous beliefs", the reader is challenged to examine personal beliefs and the attitudes they engender. Tracing defensiveness--a form of "passive violence"--to the root of war, Williamson demonstrates how our resistance to love and vulnerability keep us enslaved to the ego. She writes:
"Whenever our outer world remains stuck, it is incumbent upon us to look, not outward, but inward. It is a call to find the places in ourselves where we are holding on to old ways--places where we blame others rather than taking personal responsibility for our woes; where we judge others instead of blessing them; where we are hard rather than vulnerable and open and kind. These issues hold the hidden keys to unlocking our unsolved personal mysteries."
Williamson outlines ten bridges of transformation that can be crossed when we fix our eyes and hearts on that which is unchanging--an eternal compass of spiritual principles which can guide us on the personal and global path to wholeness:

*From Anxiety to Atonement
*From Asking God to Change the World to Praying That He Changes Us

Using personal anecdotes, Williamson delves into various life transitions such as menopause, adolescence, and parenting--and how seasons of change are amazing opportunities for not only growth and change, but also global transformation. Saying that "our greatest contribution to the world at this time is not just what we do but who we are becoming", she shows the reader that no matter where we find ourselves, we can be a conduit for miracles. In fact, she says that sometimes "being about our Father's business" is as much what we're not doing, than what we are. That is, chasing a future dream of spiritual ambition, we ignore life in the Present--which is the only place that "I Am", and miracles, dwell:
"If I had simply allowed myself to enjoy my life more, I would have ended up better off later on. And when I allow myself to simply enjoy my life right now, I'm giving myself the biggest boost for the future. Every point in life's journey is inherently preparing us for our future in ways the rational mind cannot possibly comprehend."
As an example, Williamson poignantly explains that she resisted some aspects of motherhood when her daughter was a baby--often distracting herself from the overwhelming insistent, needy demands of her daughter. Williamson recalls: "I see now that the fact it was happening meant it was exactly what I was supposed to be doing, and I wasn't losing out on anything by giving most of my attention to her." As one who has had a similar experience with motherhood versus aspirations for a "real life" (i.e., a spiritually fulfilling vocation), I resonated with the truth that wherever we find ourselves, that is exactly where we need to be. Our limitless and brightness can shine no matter where we are at; in fact, when we shine, we can literally change the world--for all minds are joined in the Mind of Christ.
The Gift Of Change provides us with a powerful blueprint on transforming our lives--and the world--through transforming our thoughts. Through the spiritual compass of the ten principles, we can at last find our way to inner peace and miracles--which results in a world that is healed and whole.

The Ultimate Gift (The Ultimate Series #1) ReviewI started this book by looking at the Table of Contents. In the Beginning. A Voice from the Past. The Gift of Work. The Gift of Money. The Gift of Friends.
What is this? Is this the kind of book I want to read?
I flipped to the back cover of the book for insight to the contents. "Ladies and gentlemen, we are here to read the last will and testament of Howard 'Red' Stevens.." "Red Steves was a self-made man who gave his family everything-and ruined them in the process. Now, as his estate of oil companies and cattle ranches is divided among the greedy and self-serving relatives, one member is singled out for something special: Red's great-nephew, Jason. In a darkened room, isolated from the rest of his family, Jason is confronted by the image of deceased great uncle on a video monitor . . ."
I began Chapter One out of curiosity. It was a story, not a touchy-feely book, like I feared. The narrative comes from an eighty-year old attorney who is reading the will of a very successful long-term client who had become a close, dear friend. As part of the inheritance, the old man's grand-nephew, a spoiled brat sort of young man, is given a special bequest. Each month he is to return to the attorney's office for a learning assignment. If he stays with the program successfully, meeting the approval of the attorney, he gains the Ultimate Gift. If he quits or doesn't meet the grade at any time, he loses his opportunity for the Ultimate Gift.
As the book progresses through the chapters, the young man, Jason, transforms from an insolent know-it-all to a much different person. The series of learnings, prescribed each month by the old man by videotape, gives a new meaning to Jason's life. Each of the gifts, a learning, is described in Jason's words as he gains new realizations.
I found myself surprisingly captivated by this book. I couldn't put it down. No, it's not a mystery or thriller, but it certainly held my attention. I can think of a number of people I know who would surely benefit from this book. One will receive my copy shortly as a very meaningful gift.
A word about the author. Jim Stovall has overcome blindness to become a national champion Olympic weightlifter, a successful investment broker, and entrepreneur. He is co-founder and president of the Narrative Television Network, which makes movies and television accessible to our nation's 13 million blind and visually impaired and their families. With revealing more about this man's incredible background (see page 124), I "got" that this is a man to be listened to. You'll gain the same feeling as you read The Ultimate Gift.The Ultimate Gift (The Ultimate Series #1) Overview
