Introducing the Practice of Ministry ReviewProfessor Kathleen Cahalan has offered readers a smart book on Practice and on Ministry. While it is titled an introduction this book is comprehensive. She defines current conversations in a fresh and inviting framework that is original and foundational at the same time. The heart of her teaching is the last chapter where she presents a readable and contemporary belief in the Trinity as the dynamism of practice of ministry. This book is an invitation to vocation for all disciples. She defines ministry in service of disciples. The charisms of the Holy Spirit are not separate gifts, but enfold us in deep, abiding relationships. We imitate Christ and are literally Christ for others in our very own world.
If a book can be a verb, this is one. I have read it twice and it continues to change not only my thinking, values and attitudes, but actions that become a habit. It is in the practice that we become by grace what God is by nature.
I wish I had this book when I worked in the Archdiocese of Indianapolis's Education Office, or when I was on the Board of St. Meinrad Seminary, or Weston School of Theology Board. I would recommend this book as a place to start for all who have been Baptized. Vocation has a voice through this book.Introducing the Practice of Ministry Overview

Peterson aims to recover the word "spiritual" for Christians out of the popular but vague fog it frequently refers to in contemporary culture. He wants to rejoin "spiritual" with "theology." When Peterson unites the two, he envisions a Christian faith that is robustly practical and unapologetically biblical. Spiritual theology is not solely for monks or academics; it's for everyday disciples of Jesus.
Peterson allows each section of the book to grow out of specific "grounding texts," biblical stories that shape the arenas of creation, history, and community. But these grounding texts are not a mere verse here or parable there. They are entire biblical books - Deuteronomy or Acts, for instance. Peterson masterfully navigates us through the details of their respective landscapes while never losing sight of the broader horizon. In fact, I was regularly amazed throughout "Christ Plays" by how Peterson managed to focus the reader not only on the story at hand (Acts, for example) but also on the sweep of the entire biblical story. Pastor: The Theology and Practice of Ordained Ministry ReviewIf you are considering the ordained ministry, "Pastor" will either reinforce your call or knock you to your senses. Willimon examines both the theology and praxis of the pastoral role. He examines the traditional images of pastor and draws a clear and challenging picture of the ordained minister in the context of the counter-cultural mission of the church.
Co-author of "Resident Aliens," Willimon bases his understanding of the pastor on the assumption that the church's role is to proclaim a radical new reality. He calls us to expand our view of evangelism and conversion beyond the altar call to that of "the destruction and reconstruction of worlds." (p. 231) Specifically, he means, the destruction of a world formed by secular or pagan thought to one created by the proclamation of scripture. The purpose, he says, is to form a prophetic community that dares to speak the truth in love - both to one another and to society.
Willimon confronts the difficulties of pastoral ministry. It is not for the faint-hearted. The Good News, he says, is both attractive and repulsive. He describes the pastor's duty to preach boldly despite human ambivalence regarding their desire to be free of "the sin that clings so closely." (Hebrews 12:1)
I found this job description of shaping a robust community that builds up each other in truth and speaks prophetically to the world to be exciting and challenging.
