The Science of Giving: Experimental Approaches to the Study of Charity (The Society for Judgment and Decision Making Series) ReviewWhy do people give to charity? What causes some to give so much more than others? What determines which causes people will support and which they will feel less compelled to contribute to? This book answers these questions, and more!
The editors have done a superb job of putting together a great collection of chapters written by academic researchers who study the psychology of charitable giving. For anyone interested in factors affecting how much people give and/or as what types of causes they tend to contribute to, this book will prove truly fascinating. The book also discusses groundbreaking research on the many psychological benefits of contributing to others. Finally, if you are a fundraiser trying to maximize the value donors receive from the contributions they make to your cause, this book is a must read.

Experience God as Your Provider: Finding Financial Stability in Unstable Times ReviewThis is not a book on how to invest, budget, or manage money. Instead, it takes the Christian reader into the heart of God as the one who provides, whether it be through an employer, the generosity of others, or in ways we couldn't dream of. The message is, no matter what the circumstances, no matter the source of income, God alone is the true provider. Ultimately our security doesn't lie in stable finances or a debt-free life but rather in Jesus Christ as Savior.
On a personal note, our family wasn't nearly as affected by the recession of the past couple of years as so many in our area were. But, given the field my husband works in (construction), the possibility of losing his job was always and still is a concern. This book was such an encouragement to me and brought me to a place of being able to surrender that fear to God completely as we rest on the truth that he will provide every need no matter what happens to us or around us.
I like that the author includes practical wisdom such as encouraging the reader to become debt-free, be wise with how one spends money, and to learn to be generous with what one has. But with every practical point he drives home the truth that God is the unfailing source behind every venue of provision. Those in the faith cannot help but come away with a renewed sense of peace despite uncertain times.

29 Gifts: How a Month of Giving Can Change Your Life ReviewI just received this book yesterday, and while I didn't read it all in one sitting, I thought about it for the whole day until I could come home and pick it up again. In a way, reading this book is like having a best friend trusting you with her deepest, darkest secrets, and you feel honored to be there for her. Cami Walker writes with poignant honesty about her diagnosis with MS, her recurring addictions and depression, and the stress that chronic illness places on marriage. And yet, most amazingly, this book is uplifting! While each chapter title focuses on the gift given that day, the writing style is more memoir and flows seamlessly between "past" (before diagnosis) and present day. There are references to spiritual leaders and healing messages, but they are subtle and "real", not over the top as too often found in books of similiar genres.
The title ("29 Gifts: How a Month of Giving Can Change Your Life") gives insight into only a small portion of what this book is about -the reminder that gratitude can start in the smallest of places. It is the act of giving, not the gift received, that makes the world a better place. This is not a how to book, it is not a book about unrealistic expectations or what you will get in return, except that I already feel like i have been given a gift, and look forward to passing this book on to others.29 Gifts: How a Month of Giving Can Change Your Life Overview

The Hidden Gifts of Helping: How the Power of Giving, Compassion, and Hope Can Get Us Through Hard Times ReviewIn The Hidden Gifts of Helping, Stephen Post is pioneering a new kind of book. It is dramatically compelling with its unifying thread: a revealing personal narrative of his surprisingly difficult move with his family from Cleveland to Long Island. It is frequently inspiring with stories and quotations sprinkled in every chapter. It is scientifically informative with brief and easy-to understand summaries of up-to-date research on love, healing, compassion, caring, and hope. And there are footnotes for those of us who wish to pursue the sources further.
It is hard to imagine a more effective, popular presentation of a message that should be more familiar: Helping others is good medicine for our own suffering. Post is a medical ethicist with a specialty on care for Alzheimer's patients, and his spirituality is both traditional and creative. He asks, "Why not start referring to God as Unlimited Love, being explicit about the divine nature? This would preclude people from ever thinking of God as Unlimited Hatred or Unlimited Anger."
Post writes of our society being caught up with television, computers, e-mail, text messages, and social media. "These virtual connections do not sustain themselves in the absence of real interactions." Having seen Stephen Post interact with audiences in the classroom, in church, and in an auditorium, I have seen in action his ability to minister with his very large supply of amazingly helpful knowledge. It is something he can call on in detail, without notes, whenever a human need expresses itself. This man is a treasure in our world, and this book offers the reader a chance for a virtual meeting that is remarkably faithful to the experience of the man himself.
