The Science of Giving: Experimental Approaches to the Study of Charity (The Society for Judgment and Decision Making Series) ReviewWhy do people give to charity? What causes some to give so much more than others? What determines which causes people will support and which they will feel less compelled to contribute to? This book answers these questions, and more!
The editors have done a superb job of putting together a great collection of chapters written by academic researchers who study the psychology of charitable giving. For anyone interested in factors affecting how much people give and/or as what types of causes they tend to contribute to, this book will prove truly fascinating. The book also discusses groundbreaking research on the many psychological benefits of contributing to others. Finally, if you are a fundraiser trying to maximize the value donors receive from the contributions they make to your cause, this book is a must read.

Achieving Excellence in Fundraising (Jossey Bass Nonprofit & Public Management Series) ReviewOn my fundraising shelf stood just two books and a binder: "Designs for Fundraising" by Harold Seymour © 1966; "The Raising of Money" by James Gregory Lord © 1987, and my collected monthly newsletters of tips from Taft. Not a lot to go on, but Seymour's classic helped me enormously, imparting such nuggets as, "At best, with few exceptions, people don't pay close or careful attention to anything."
OK, so listen up. Times have changed. Many, many books now beckon us, delivering the full spectrum of nonprofit knowledge. Yet all books are not equal. When Henry (Hank) Rosso gathered a number of esteemed colleagues together and put out Achieving Excellence in Fund Raising in 1991, it represented a milestone in fundraising education, based as it was on his many years of teaching through The Fund Raising School, which he founded right here in the San Francisco Bay Area. The School later became a program of The Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University, and it continues to provide superior, basic training in fund raising principle and practice throughout the country. All the years of teaching experience and the benefits of association with IU are now reflected in this expanded, caught-up-with-the-world second edition of the "Rosso" (RAH-so).
It was time. Consider that when Achieving Excellence debuted in 1991, the stock market stood at 2736, Giving USA estimated total philanthropic support at $105 billion, and the National Science Foundation had just lifted its ban on commercial use of the Internet. Today, as we reel and grapple, it is worth noting that the markets have more than tripled from 1991; philanthropic dollars have doubled; and the Internet is our bread and butter. The second edition adds several chapters in recognition of the changes and rounds out its predecessor. We read about the new order, how to build endowment, women as donors, trends in major donor giving (read with caution, as markets and donor experience have had some impact), diversity considerations, Internet strategies, special events fundraising, technology use, budgeting and accountability, stewardship, international perspectives, and fund raising as a profession. These are welcome additions.
Given the scope attempted by the book, I should point out that there are, in fact, a few areas not covered, including how to obtain government grants and contracts, and exhaustive instructions on how to write a grant proposal to a foundation. But if you heed what these authors have written, you will have no problem accomplishing either feat.
Most of the authors in this edition are new to the "Rosso," numbering 27 in all. The first edition lists 13 contributors. Hank wrote eight of the chapters of that book; he has two in this one. With Hank gone (1999), we are guided into Rosso II by the gentle, sure hands of Eugene Tempel, executive director of the IU Center on Philanthropy and Tim Seiler, current director of The Fund Raising School. Between them (with a chapter from Hank), they set the stage in Parts One (Context) and Two (Fundamentals).
The book proceeds logically and is easy to navigate or use as a quick reference. "Fundamentals" is followed by sections treating "building blocks" (e.g. annual fund, capital campaign), sources, methods (e.g. direct mail, special events), management (e.g. leadership, boards, information, budgeting, consultants), ethics, stewardship, and personal professional support. A thorough Glossary and Bibliography follow.
Our AFP chapter boasts several representatives here: Kim Klein reprises her excellent chapter on grassroots fund raising and Kay Grace on leadership; Mal Warwick writes the update on direct mail; Alan Wendroff supplies special events; and Skip Henderson updates us on the trustees' role.
The context is still Hank's, which means that ultimately, the book is not about the joy of soliciting but something higher. I'm sure he would be tickled if you inscribed your book as he wrote in so many of our first editions "I hope that you will enjoy the reading of this book. Let it help you to teach the joy of giving. Hank Rosso"Achieving Excellence in Fundraising (Jossey Bass Nonprofit & Public Management Series) Overview

Getting to Giving: Fundraising the Entrepreneurial Way ReviewIf you run or oversee a mission-driven nonprofit with limited resources, you need GETTING TO GIVING! Stevenson's deep understanding of organizations and human motivation contributed to his amazing success as a fundraiser for a variety of institutions, large and small, and he shares his wisdom in this gem of a book. The message is clear: real success as an entrepreneurial fundraiser lies in identifying the challenges and unique opportunities presented by potential donors. This approach emphasizes the cultivation of donor-partners in ways that bring major gifts and extraordinary personal satisfaction. Board members and CEOs of nonprofits who want to establish a more effective development function should read-and share-this essential guide to fundraising leadership in the 21st century.
I'm giving this book to fellow board members who need to understand why development efforts often fail to yield truly significant gifts.

Fund Raising Realities Every Board Member Must Face - Revised Edition: A 1-Hour Crash Course on Raising Major Gifts for Nonprofit Organizations ReviewEveryone who works in the wonderful world of not-for-profits realizes that the dreaded day will come when they have to make an ask for money. This terrific book not only outlines the how-to of making such an ask, but also teaches the board member that this is their board participation responsibility. The book takes you step by step through the process teaching you that the best way to avoid the fear of the situation is to be well prepared.
However, i think one of the most important aspects of this book is that it convinces board members that theirs is a noble cause and that asking for money should bring a sense of pride, not shame. That may be a hard sell, but i think Lansdowne succeeds.
Lansdowne offers a well organized book that anticipates the pitfall of fund raising, while providing a well mapped procedure to follow.Fund Raising Realities Every Board Member Must Face - Revised Edition: A 1-Hour Crash Course on Raising Major Gifts for Nonprofit Organizations Overview

Nonprofit Essentials: Major Gifts (The AFP/Wiley Fund Development Series) ReviewAre you an executive director at a nonprofit? Are you a development director at a university or hospital? If so, then you should be aware of major gift fundraising and what is involved in doing it. If you don't know what it is about, then read this book and you will be up on it. The author has years of experience in a large university setting where major gift fundraising is the norm. She knows what she is talking about. And she does a very nice job presenting her knowledge in the form of this book.
The book is delivered in an easy-to-read format, and includes case studies to show the challenges typically faced by fundraisers when seeking major gifts. What do I mean by "major gifts?" Gifts sought in the $10,000 and above range. Most of the time they are $20,000 or $50,000 or $100,000. And the successful major gift fundraisers like to brag about snaring large 6 figure gifts.
What the book tells us about is how to build a major gift program. How to find the major gift donors and how to engage them so they will cough up the dough. It also describes how to cultivate those prospective donors and how to ask them for that big gift.
Chapter 3 does a nice job covering the importance of a "strong" nonprofit board. What do I mean by "strong?" One whose members have big bucks, are willing to give some of those big bucks to the nonprofit, AND who have wealthy friends and acquaintances who also are willing to give some of their big bucks to the nonprofit.
The author takes the reader from forming a major gift program to growing it as follows:
1. ID and rate prospective donors
2. Prepare the Case for Support (a document explaining to donors why to give)
3. How to train volunteer fundraisers (including the board members)
4. How to cultivate donors (from cheapies to generous major gift givers)
5. How to solicit (how to make the ask)
6. Recognition (always say thank you!)
7. How to provide stewardship for the major gift
The book is wonderful. I highly recommend it for those wanting to take their nonprofit to a new level. 5 stars!Nonprofit Essentials: Major Gifts (The AFP/Wiley Fund Development Series) Overview

The Ask: How to Ask for Support for Your Nonprofit Cause, Creative Project, or Business Venture ReviewAsking (soliciting) people for money can be a stressful or challenging endeavor. But, you know, so is just about everything we do the first time. And how do we learn to do something the first time? Someone teaches us either verbally or by way of writing a book. This book does a wonderful job of explaining "The Ask" part of not-for-profit fundraising in its 10 chapters:
1. Soliciting Money Usually Causes Jitters
2. Prospect Research and Evaluating a Prospective Donor for Gift-Giving Readiness
3. Who Should Do the Ask?
4. How to Prepare for an Ask
5. Asking for Non-Major Gifts
6. Asking for Major Gifts in Annual Campaign Setting
7. Asking for Planned Gifts (Deferred Gifts)
8. Asking for Major Gifts in Capital Campaign Setting
9. How to Respond to Prospective Donor after Making the Ask
10. Follow-Up for Each Ask
The author is certainly qualified to write the book. She has a number of years experience working in a major gift setting for a well established university in New York. It surprised me when I stumbled across this book in the bookstore that there was enough material on the subject to actually write this book. But apparently there is more than enough to talk about on the subject. I probably would have titled the book "Soliciting Major Gifts" instead of The Ask. But then I would not have included Chapter 5 either.
Let's face it, face-to-face gift solicitation is predominantly a major gift thing. There might be some face-to-face gift solicitation of donors for sizeable (but not major) gifts, but for the most part that is the exception not the rule. Major gifts as I know them are $10,000 and up. Many are six figures! Now that is something to get jittery over.
I would have liked the book better if it had not been as wordy as it was. Instead of providing the chapter titles in this review as they were written in the book I changed them a bit. I think my titles explain the contents of the book better. I also found the list of TEN (10) basic categories of responses to an ask included in the book to be way too long. I'm familiar with there being just four: (1) Yes I will give, (2) No I won't give, (3) That's too much, and (4) Let me think about it and get back to you. And there was some overlap of "guiding principles" included at page 213 of the book - so I think there could have been fewer principles included in that list.
I have a feeling this book will get its most use from board members of nonprofits and leadership teams heading up capital campaigns at nonprofits. It is my understanding that most people involved in major gift solicitations at the big nonprofits (schools and hospitals) already have a system in place for helping major gift solicitors feel at ease doing an ask and doing it well. In fact, this book is probably a public version of one of those schools' in-house guides. 5 stars! The Ask: How to Ask for Support for Your Nonprofit Cause, Creative Project, or Business Venture Overview

Rosso on Fund Raising: Lessons from a Master's Lifetime Experience (Jossey-Bass Nonprofit Sector Series) ReviewAn excellent introduction to fund raising; without doubt the best available. Rosso is clear and concise in this brief and easily digested text. This is not a "how to" book. You will not learn the details of running a capital campaign or conducting prospect research. Rather, Rosso provides an overview of the elements of fund raising. The major laws of fund raising science are presented along with the less well defined knowledge areas of fund raising art. He discusses topics including sequential solicitation, the donor data base, and using a gift range chart. But also communicated are the human elements which are essential to success in this field. The account is highly personal, drawing on years of practical experience. The recollections are well chosen and thoughtfully integrated into the text. Although this book will have most value for those with little or no prior knowledge of its subject, I suspect that even the experienced fund raiser will obtain benefit from its reading.Rosso on Fund Raising: Lessons from a Master's Lifetime Experience (Jossey-Bass Nonprofit Sector Series) Overview
