God Is More Than Enough (LifeChange Books) ReviewFirst, the title of the book caught my eye because YES I know it is true - that God is more than enough. So at first look all I knew was the title of the book which made me like and desire it. Then once I received the book I came to realize that it was a book by best selling author and Pastor Tony Evans concerning Psalm 23.
The book itself is small in size as well as in the number of pages - 90 plus the extra pages every book always has. But this is no small book when it comes to delivering the message that God is more than ENOUGH. This book speaks volumes when it comes to the matter of addressing the sufficiency of God for the life of every believer.
In Chapter 1 of the book, Pastor Evans asks, "Just Who Is Your Shepherd?" And right from the beginning of the book in the first chapter he starts hammering hard at our hardened self-sufficient, self-serving hearts...who is our Shepherd? And he makes the point that many of us claim Jesus as our Savior, but then asks us is he our Shepherd? This is convicting territory and the spiritual waters can get pretty rough if you have just been dabbling in Christianity; I mean you are living the "a little bit of Jesus goes a long way," or "just a little dab" of Jesus over our sinful lives and we are good to go kind of Christian life. Well, Pastor Evans is not going to tread lightly concerning this matter because he is right...we need to know who our Savior, Lord and Shepherd are...when life is going good as well as when it is not.
In Chapter 2 Pastor Evans writes about the fact that "GOD is More Than ENOUGH to Meet All of our Spiritual Needs." Every single one of them! He states that "God wants to give us back our soul," or as he refers to it, our personhood. I like that. Amen! I needed to be reminded of that. Jesus has given us back our soul...our personhood back and he can and will meet all of our spiritual needs as the Shepherd of our person.
In Chapter 3 he writes about the fact that GOD is "more than ENOUGH to Meet Our Directional Needs." God wants to be our "spiritual tour guide" as he refers respectfully to God, on our pilgrimage through this world. In Chapter 4 Pastor Evans writes about how GOD is "more than ENOUGH to Meet Our Emotional Needs." He makes the statement about God, "when he's all you have, he's all you need." Now that is powerful. Think on that statement for a while. In Chapter 5 author Evans shares that GOD is "more than ENOUGH to Meet Our Physical Needs." He refers to him as a "good provider." I don't know what your experience with God has been; however, I have found that what Pastor Evans writes is true. Many times I have failed GOD but he has NEVER once failed me. Not ever! Who else in this universe can we say that about for our lives? And Chapter 6 he writes about what is very dear to my heart and that is that GOD is "more than ENOUGH to Meet Our Eternal Needs." He refers to our position as "sure and secure" for all eternity as we "shall dwell in the House of the LORD forever." (Psalm 23:6) And it does not get any better than that.
So, God...our God...our Shepherd IS "more Than ENOUGH to Meet ALL of our Needs" if we will only but get out of his way and out of our own way...(sometimes we are our own worst enemy getting in God's way and our own- the devil and his spiritual cohorts needs do nothing because we are more than ready and happy to mess things up on our own), and live for him by faith and just let him be who and what he wants to be in our lives...and that is our Shepherd.
I received a complementary copy of this book from Multnomah Publishers for reviewing it.God Is More Than Enough (LifeChange Books) Overview

Traveling between the Worlds: Conversations with Contemporary Shamans ReviewI picked up this book thinking it was a modern-day counterpart of the excellent "Shamanic Voices: A Survey of Visionary Narratives" by Joan Halifax. But while Halifax interviewed or referenced the words of "traditional" shamans, many maintaining a life in their indigenous tribal settings, Webb chose to interview "contemporary" shamans who have all brought their teachings to Western consumers.
I recommend Webb's book as a wonderful overview of the current "shamanic" market out there today. It presents, in nicely packaged chunks, interviews with two dozen people who have dedicated themselves to sharing modern-day "shamanic" healing practices and philosophies to pretty much anybody who is willing to take the time to listen (although, in some cases, you'll need to bring a wad of cash as well).
Notice I put "shamanic" in quotes, because some of the people interviewed by Webb can only be called a "shaman" by using modern-day pop terminology, and only a few appear to have gone through any of the traditional grueling rituals and (often painful) rites associated with the type of shamanism often portrayed in Halifax's book (and Mircea Eliade's ground-breaking work on the subject as well). Nonetheless, pretty much everybody in Webb's book meets Eliade's definition of a shaman, i.e. "in which a spiritual leader traveled to an upper or lower world through a controlled state of ecstasy (trance) and conversed with spirits in those other worlds for the benefit of the community (or individuals within the community)", so I'm willing to give Webb and her subjects the benefit of the doubt in that respect.
That being said, readers of Webb's book would be well advised to take a healthy dash of salt with them as they peruse the words of the 24 modern-day shamans she interviews.
I said Webb presents a wonderful overview of the current shamanic market, and I mean it in that she gives a very good look into what's out there, both good and bad. Webb seems to see herself as the journalistic explorer, foraging through the jungles of spirituality to find hidden wellsprings of spiritual knowledge. And, as such, she doesn't seem to ever cast the eyes of doubt upon any of her subjects, instead presenting all of them as equally valid sources of divine truth.
In short, Webb leaves the validation of her sources as an exercise to the reader. And, like many exercises, I found this one to be quite stimulating and beneficial, although tiring at times.
Some of the interviews in this book are real gems. For example, I found the ideas of Gabrielle Roth to be quite inspiring, the views and advice of Tom Cowan to be very insightful, and the anecdotes of Malidoma Patrice Some' to be very intriguing. Several other people interviewed by Webb presented truly memorable ways of thinking that I find myself repeatedly turning back to for enjoyable reference.
Yet mixed in between the established, respected modern-day shamanic practicioners are interviews people of very dubious backgrounds. Some, like the infamous Brooke "Medicine Eagle" Edwards, are considered by indigenous people to be among the most exploitive frauds out there today. Others, such as "Bee Shaman" Simon Buxton, are entertaining to read but offer no basis of reference that anything they say is anything more than a glorious work of fiction.
I finished the book quite glad to have read it, even if I wasn't always certain of the validity of the people Webb was quoting. In the cases where I found myself doubting the integrity of one of Webb's sources, I had to ask myself why I felt that way, and to search inside to understand what it was that I felt was spiritually rubbing me the wrong way. Likewise, I also made sure I questioned myself when I found a writer I particular agreed with to make sure I was accepting their views because they made sense, and not just because of their charismatic verbal abilities.
Webb should be applauded for her effort. And even if a particular basis for ritual presented by one of her sources isn't historically sound, that doesn't mean it isn't spiritually valid. As Tom Cowan told Webb, "Every shaman has an idiosyncratic way of practicing. Even if you are in a strong tradition and are trained by elders in that tradition, you end up practicing in your own unique way. ... [T]he power you get comes from the spirits." Only you can judge for yourself whether a particular path, no matter how modern or traditionally based, is the one that's right for your life's journey. Having a good selection to choose from, to me, can only help the process - as long as you make your choice in a well thought-out manner.
Enjoy!Traveling between the Worlds: Conversations with Contemporary Shamans Overview

Spiritual Maturity: Principles of Spiritual Growth For Every Believer (Commitment To Spiritual Growth) ReviewOswald Sanders was a missionary in Far East Asia, and field director of the Overseas Missionary Fellowship for many years. This book, Spiritual Maturity, is one in a series of three on serious discipleship. The other two are Spiritual Discipleship, and Spiritual Leadership (which Chuck Colson said was the best book on Christian leadership that he has read).
For Christians who have been demoralized by the shallow and superfluous popular "fluff" that abounds on the topic of discipleship, this series will come as cool water in a desert. Sanders deals with the brutal struggles in discipleship, and makes it clear there is no spiritual growth without a price. If we are not willing to pay the price--we will not grow towards maturity. As Oswald Sanders said during a series on dispcipleship at Gull Lake Bible Conference, "There are spiritual Christians, and there are unspiritual Christians. And most are unspiritual."
This kind of brutal language needs to be revived, in an age in which most Americans confuse Christian discipleship with self-help or self-optimization. In reality, the gate is still narrow, and the path hard, which leads to life (Matthew 7:14).Spiritual Maturity: Principles of Spiritual Growth For Every Believer (Commitment To Spiritual Growth) Overview

Discerning of Spirits ReviewFrancis Frangipane has a burden for America and her cities. Like David Wilkerson, Rich Wilkerson, and Kenneth Hagin, he has picked up the mantle of prophet and interceeds with God for souls, cities, and nations.
Frangipane has emerged as the spiritual drill sergeant of the spiritual warriors of our time.
"Discerning of Spirits" is a simple, short summary of key principles regarding the oft-misunderstood gift of discernment. In "The Three Battlegrounds", I think, Frangipane writes that "discernment without love is merely critical judgement." And he picks up that theme here. Like the other gifts of the Spirit, discernment operates in love. Anything less is hypocrisy and nothing more than a critical judging spirit.
In the end, our pursuit is being conformed to the image of Christ: "Christ-likeness is the goal, not warfare." Frangipane gets it right and this booklet is a helpful reminder of the important guideposts along the journey.
His signature theme on the topic of spiritual warfare is: "Victory begins with the name of Jesus on our lips. It is consummated by the nature of Jesus in our hearts."
Note: This is a 26 page booklet - useful for Bible studies - not a major text on the topic.Discerning of Spirits Overview

God, I Have Issues: 50 Ways To Pray No Matter How You Feel Review"50 Ways" is Fr. Thibodeaux's response to a need of his own that is certain to resonate with others. Over time he has wished in vain for a resource that would help him incorporate his current mood or a common situation into his conversations with God, who seems to be inviting him to do so. Thus, he decided to write that resource himself. The table of contents lists a series of situations and emotions. The body of the book contains a reflection on each topic, always introduced by a scripture passage and followed by a list of passages for further reading, prayer pointers, related entries, and "words to take with you." The value-added segment comes in the last few pages, which contain an index of themes and extensive listing of alternative emotions and situations in an "If you're feeling"/"Look up" format.
Thibodeaux's book, which he describes as a reference manual, includes a generous introduction with suggestions for praying with "God I Have Issues," praying with scripture, and praying with emotions.God, I Have Issues: 50 Ways To Pray No Matter How You Feel Overview

I Want to See God: A Practical Synthesis of Carmelite Spirituality ReviewThis book is a great synthesis of the spiritual life and is good for all Christians. P. Marie-Eugene explains all the facets of Carmelite spirituality in a very down-to-earth, practical way. He takes the reader through all of the different stages of the spiritual life (purgative, illuminative, unitive) with the aid of spiritual powerhouses like Sts. Teresa of Avila and John of the Cross. It is also a good primer for those seeking a foundation in spiritual theology; it also serves well as a moral theology text.I Want to See God: A Practical Synthesis of Carmelite Spirituality Overview

Revolution Within: A Fresh Look at Supernatural Living ReviewThe purpose of this book is to help believers understand and apply the provisions of the New Covenant (NC) while severing all ties with the Old Covenant (OC), which Edwards makes synonymous with the Law. While his handling of the NC is fairly accurate, his portrayal of the believer's life under the OC is not.
Edwards believes Christians should obey God's standards out of love for Christ, unlike OC obedience which he claims was obedience to a code, not a person. He further characterizes OC living as devoid of grace, true spirituality, meaningful service, and joy. Has Edwards ever read the Psalms? He believes that under the OC, only the giants of the faith were usually able to know God (prophets, priests, kings). All others could only know Him through external means. However, David was called by God while a shepherd boy because of his heart condition (I Sam.16). Many others such as Noah, Abraham, Joseph, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, none of whom were high ranking people nor came to know God through external means, obviously had deep faith relationships with Him. God is made to be a capricious liar by Edwards' position since God says in Deut. 4:31 that anyone who seeks Him with all his heart and soul will find Him. This verse also indicates that OC believers were to seek God Himself, not simply obey a moral code.
Although God Himself initiated the OC, Edwards believes it shows only what man can do for God, a list of commandments to obey. He fails to mention that Abraham was saved by faith (Gen. 15:6) or that grace even existed under the OC. He believes love is the spiritual litmus test in the NC, unlike the OC, failing to mention that the two greatest commandments to love God and others were given as part of the OC. He also fails to mention that Micah reduces God's requirements to doing justice, loving kindness, and walkling humbly with God, not a system of do's and don'ts.
Edwards minimizes the ministries of the OC believers as depicted in Heb. 11 and II Chron.31:21, stating that OC ministry is lifeless and produces only death. This is because of his view that the Law and the OC are synonymous. However, while the OC is obsolete, the Law is not. Jesus came to fulfill it (Matt.5) and Paul says faith establishes it (Rom.3:31). They are not one and the same. Heb.9 relates that only the OC sacrifices, earthly tabernacles and purification rites are now obsolete, not the Law itself.
Edwards never mentions that the OC was given in the larger context of a pre-existing covenant of grace. OC recipients of grace through faith in God enjoyed circumcised hearts to love God with all their hearts and minds (Deut.30:6), as well as eternal salvation. Salvation through grace and love for God as a motivation for godly living is God's plan in both the NC and the OC.
If you feel strongly about the message of grace throughout the Bible from beginning to end, you will probably not appreciate this book.

If Life Is a Game, These Are the Rules ReviewFor all of you fans of the book, "Chicken Soup for the Soul", there is a new book out there that unveils the ten greatest rules about living life as a human being. In fact, the forward is written by Jack Canfield ( of 'Chicken Soup' fame) and has an interesting story. You see, the first version of Chicken Soup had a list called "The Ten Rules for Being Human" signed by 'anonymous'. Turns out, Dr. Cherie Carter-Scott was the author of those Ten Rules and, with a little encouragement, she's put together this fabulous little book to help us reprogram the gray matter in our skulls.
The book is laid out in an extremely easy to read format and divided into Ten Chapters, or Rules, if you will. In these 133 pages, are such eye opening revelations, such as: Chapter # 3 There Are No Mistakes Only Lessons and Chapter # 4 A Lesson is Repeated Until Learned. These two chapters alone are worth the price of admission! Time and again, you may have witnessed a friend, or even yourself repeating a situation in life, over and over. Whether it's always going out with the same type of people, trusting the wrong people, or simply making the most difficult choices, these are symptoms of not understanding that life will always present you with the same type of situations, until you have learned to master them. It's not bad luck, but probably unwise decision making that gives us the same outcome. Until a person makes a 'conscious' decision to adjust their cycle of thinking, and break out of the pattern, life will always seem to dole out the same rewards.
Another great chapter is #9: "All Your Answers Lie Inside of You". Sometimes we know what's best for us and we still decide to go against it. What you need, what you seek and who you are is embedded within you. This book is not about games, it's about living life to the fullest and achieving the next level of consciousness. An excellent gift for the soul searcher! If Life Is a Game, These Are the Rules Overview

When the Game Is Over, It All Goes Back in the Box ReviewWhen the Game Is Over It All Goes Back in the Box is a book on life by John Ortberg, a Presbyterian pastor. His argument is thus: you will die, and when you do, you will lose all the stuff you have. Therefore, instead of focusing on things you cannot keep, focus on things you can.
Ortberg says that the object of life is, as Jesus said, to be rich toward God. Pleasing God is part of this; part of it is putting a greater priority on personal relationships. This also turns out to be the place where we find true fulfillment. Ortberg's main target is those who say they will work less and spend more time with their families "when things settle down." His message is this: things never settle down until it's too late.
The book is written with an amusing game theme. Ortberg borrows a lot of anecdotes from a lot of different authors, which is fine. He gives credit where credit is due. Ortberg has a surprisingly good sense of humor. Sometimes his jokes are pretty corny, but on the whole he seems like a funny guy. My only criticism of his writing is a small one: several chapters tend to run a little long (the reader has gotten the point and is ready to move on).
There is criticism due the publisher: on nearly every other page, there are excerpts from the text blown up in boxes on the same page. Perhaps this is done for those flipping through the book in a shop, or for those who skim, but for the actual reader, it is incredibly annoying and distracting.
On the whole, When the Game Is Over It All Goes Back in the Box is an accessible, engaging, humorous book on Christian living and eternity. This is obviously a Christian book, but the theologizing does not get heavy-handed, and Ortberg does not beat the reader over the head with the Bible. It can benefit any Christian as well as nonchristians who are feeling unfulfilled.

Living in the Now: How to Live as the Spiritual Being That You Are ReviewI have always found that attempts to live the life described by the Enlightened Masters to be fairly challenging. Most of us experience a more finite and progressive awakening process than what these Masters did, where the untamed mind and ego still plays a key role in our lives. Gina Lake's books are enormously powerful in helping one to understand the mind and ego in relation to consciousness, and progressively lessen the gap, so that we may live increasingly "enlightened" lives. I joke with my friends that her book, "Living In The Now..." is like Eckhart Tolle on steroids. It is enormously powerful and will assuredly have a favorable impact on your life. It is a must read for all those who are more interested in `Being', rather than simple intellectual understanding.Living in the Now: How to Live as the Spiritual Being That You Are Overview

Experiencing The Holy Spirit ReviewWhile Murray's book is only around 130 pages, there is plenty of spiritual insights for anyone interested in the Holy Spirit.
Among the important points covered in the book include:
1. God comes to those who wait on Him.
2. Those who wait on the Lord will see Him work in far greater ways than they can imagine.
3. God will use despair to break us of our self-life and self-confidence. The world's influence on us is so strong that we often have to withdraw from it.
4. God wants to prepare His people for a life of victory.
5. Dying to self and humbling ourselves before the Lord will result in the blessing of the Holy Spirit.
6. We must admit our utter impotence and helplessness to experience the fullness of the Holy Spirit in our own strength.
7. Use the blessings God gives you to benefit others.
8. During times of discouragement, rest in silence before God and hold fast to your integrity.
9. God holds Himself responsible for your future and will provide for us as we walk in the fullness of His Spirit.Read, enjoy, and be challenged to let the Holy Spirit get more of you! Highly recommended.

Leaders on Leadership: Wisdom, Advice and Encouragement on the Art of Leading God's People (Leading Edge) ReviewThis is a great book that really makes you think. It was required reading for a class and very glad it was. The many authors who penned their years of experience have come together to bring a book that is full of knowledge that would be very useful for anyone who is in a leadership position or seeking a leadership position. Great for church boards, lay leaders, etc. Highly recommend this for a group study.Leaders on Leadership: Wisdom, Advice and Encouragement on the Art of Leading God's People (Leading Edge) Overview

Glow in the Dark: Living in God's Creative Energy and Supernatural Joy ReviewBeing born in 1960 I got to watch its effect on my sisters who were 11 and 7 years older than me. Being heavily wired towards the new sound I was blasted by the Beattles, Jimi Hendrix, The Who, The Moody Blues, etc. It seemed like every week some new hip band was hitting the air waves. Blind Faith was like a super 60's group. In the 70's when I got my drivers license (1976) I got to experiment with some of the drivers of the 60's and early 70's culture. I remember reading Dick Alberts book "Be here Now" and it seemed like an out pouring of much that was the 60's. One thing that really stood out was his lumping Jesus in with all the other "teachers". This got brought back when I was reading the back of a Keith Green album. Keith noted that many spiritual people would talk about Jesus as being one of the ways, but Jesus said he was the only way. It started a logic whirl pool in my head that lead me to some of the same conclusions that Charles Stocks book unfolds in the first half.
Around page 97 he starts to expand even more on the "Be Here Now" concept of "being in the present". His next 10 pages could be over laid with a book recently released by Andrew Carey called "The Redeeming Power Of Presence". If you want to go deeper on experiencing a moment by moment Presence in your life I would highly recommend this book as well. This book also goes into detail on the importance of staying present even in the tough times, which has been one of my down falls.
Charles has a gift for the Joy, and Grace / Joy are huge to living a successful life. One of the big lessons I learned with this was back in 1998 drving home from the Allentown PA Airport after being up in Toronto. I had just gotten blasted with the Joy like never before, but I felt it waring off as I drove home. I was coming up the hill towards my home asking "God I don't want to loose this Joy!". All of a sudden I had this impression on my mind that was so strong it almost sounded audibly, "let everything go". I said to myself, ok..... and wow...I was in the glory for over a week straight. It was like my own private lesson of what life should, and could, and can be like. Charles book is a recipe (as much as you can make joy into a recipe)for living in the joy. The only thing that needs to be conquered is between our ears.

Standing on the Shoulders of Giants: The Release of Mantles to the End-Time Generation ReviewIn the book "Standing on the Shoulders of Giants" Steve Brooks opens the scriptures on a subject of mantles, and important area of study for the approaching end-time generation. Steve brings new understanding from the Old and New Testament records that focus on how God placed mantles on willing hearts, even as he is doing today.
Brooks describes mantles as an anointing on you to accomplish what God has called you to do. He uses Elijah and Elisha to illustrate a Biblical pattern of passing on and receiving a mantle. Moses and Joshua and others are also excellent Biblical examples that are woven throughout the account.
Relevant stories from Steven's ministry and those of his co-laborers dramatically exemplify how mantles are being passed on today. Charismatic in doctrine and in personality, intent on helping people, Steve's writing is practical, spiritually motivating and genuine.
I found the guidelines for receiving a mantle especially helpful and was personally blessed and challenged by the material on allowing the Holy Spirit to choose your mantle.
Christian leaders from all denominations need to be informed of the signs, wonders and anointing which Steve Brooks has boldly presented in "Standing on the Shoulders of Giants." This is a vital and judicious book getting the church ready to move into a new generation of anointing from God.
