The Compassionate Classroom: Relationship Based Teaching and Learning ReviewThis is a landmark book that all educators of young and elementary aged children deserve to become familiar with. "The Compassionate Classroom" has the power to transform and improve the classroom social scene and learning experiences of children and teachers alike.
Supported by the research and experience of psychologists and educators like Daniel Goleman and William Glasser, the authors' main idea is that education depends on positive relationships and that children and adults need to learn to communicate in a mutually supportive way to achieve this. They draw directly on the seminal work of conflict resolution mediator and trainer Marshall Rosenberg who says, "The objective of Nonviolent Communication is not to change people and their behavior in order to get our way; it is to establish relationships based on honesty and empathy which will eventually fulfill everyone's needs." Sura Hart and Victoria Kindle Hodson masterfully translate the principles of "nonviolent communication" so that children can understand and apply them. Some of the highlights of this book are the numerous practical activities and lessons that teachers can use with their students to improve their ability to listen with empathy to others and make requests that will be sympathetically heard.
Children learn better in a supportive environment where they feel emotionally safe. They need the tools to communicate "from the heart" in order to achieve this. On the contrary, in today's hurried world our students are often exposed to impersonal pressures and models of social interaction that promote indifference, competition, hostility and violent "solutions'' to personal or social problems. "The Compassionate Classroom" provides an antidote to all this and sets a different standard for our children, one that is humane and "life-fulfilling." Along with many fellow teachers I say a heartfelt "Thank you and congratulations!" to Sura and Victoria for this wonderful contribution to our practice. The Compassionate Classroom: Relationship Based Teaching and Learning Overview

10 Seconds to Wealth: Master the Moment Using Your Divine Gifts ReviewTom Marcoux has done it again. With 10 books and 21 audio programs his recent book 10 Seconds to Wealth is another in long list of best best sellers. Early in the book Tom defines "the 10 seconds" and on page 2 he reminds us that those all important 10 seconds can come at any time so be prepared. His book focuses on how each of us have divine gifts that we need to understand and use to be our best when those crucial 10 seconds occur.
Tom has filled his book with hard data research from neuroscience and then shows you how to apply this research. He identifies the divine gifts...love, humility, forgiveness, faith, grace and art and throughout the book shares how these gifts can help us create what we want in our lives, and the wealth we want.
He brings his vast experience with clients and real world situations to the book, sharing secrets with the reader on how he helped others. You'll love how he brings hundreds of quotes to the book to add to the points he is making.
Starting on page 74 he provides examples from millionaires and billionaires like Oprah, Bill Gates, Walt Disney on how they used their divine gifts and spirit to create their wealth. He misses nothing from including romance and wealth in relationships to restoring relationships, taking time for life's lessons, nurturing ourselves in Chapter 10 and even a guide on working with creditors in Chapter 11. Tom shares real world examples of how fear and other emotions or beliefs hold us back, and how to shift our thinking to achieve what we want.
Each chapter ends with a conclusion of the chapter and on page 412 he provides a review of the essence of 10 seconds to wealth. This is a must read for anyone, even if you have extreme wealth. Tom brings himself to this book and you quickly see that what he outlines and teaches in the book is how he runs his life, with love, gratitude, humility, open heart and love.

Parenting From Your Heart: Sharing the Gifts of Compassion, Connection, and Choice (Nonviolent Communication Guides) ReviewThis book follows the methods described in Marshall Rosenberg's book about non-violent communication. I highly recommend this book for parents even if you have not yet read the Rosenberg book. The book is short (43 pages), yet it clearly describes the application of the non-violent communication technique to communicate, motivate and develop mutually empathic relationship with your child. It is a win-win relatiohship where the feelings and the needs of both the child and the adult are met without the use of the emotional blackmail of shame, guilt, blame or rewards. Inbal Kashtan described the communication method with lots of examples and exercises after each chapter so you can practice and reinforce the method. Incorporating this simple but powerful method of communciation between a child and a parent allows the child to develop self motivation, the ability to express feelings and needs and empthatically connect to self and others even in an emotionally charged environment. Its something we all strive for and special gift that you can give and share with your child.Parenting From Your Heart: Sharing the Gifts of Compassion, Connection, and Choice (Nonviolent Communication Guides) Overview

The Hidden Gifts of Helping: How the Power of Giving, Compassion, and Hope Can Get Us Through Hard Times ReviewIn The Hidden Gifts of Helping, Stephen Post is pioneering a new kind of book. It is dramatically compelling with its unifying thread: a revealing personal narrative of his surprisingly difficult move with his family from Cleveland to Long Island. It is frequently inspiring with stories and quotations sprinkled in every chapter. It is scientifically informative with brief and easy-to understand summaries of up-to-date research on love, healing, compassion, caring, and hope. And there are footnotes for those of us who wish to pursue the sources further.
It is hard to imagine a more effective, popular presentation of a message that should be more familiar: Helping others is good medicine for our own suffering. Post is a medical ethicist with a specialty on care for Alzheimer's patients, and his spirituality is both traditional and creative. He asks, "Why not start referring to God as Unlimited Love, being explicit about the divine nature? This would preclude people from ever thinking of God as Unlimited Hatred or Unlimited Anger."
Post writes of our society being caught up with television, computers, e-mail, text messages, and social media. "These virtual connections do not sustain themselves in the absence of real interactions." Having seen Stephen Post interact with audiences in the classroom, in church, and in an auditorium, I have seen in action his ability to minister with his very large supply of amazingly helpful knowledge. It is something he can call on in detail, without notes, whenever a human need expresses itself. This man is a treasure in our world, and this book offers the reader a chance for a virtual meeting that is remarkably faithful to the experience of the man himself.
