Question Your Thinking, Change The World: Quotations from Byron Katie ReviewThis may be one of the most profound books I've read. If Katie's approach to life resonates with you ("The Work"), this book will have a special place on your bookshelf.
This book isn't about "information". If you need "information", look elsewhere. This isn't snackfood. It's not about a quick-fix to problems in your life. (Go see your psychologist.) It's about seeing life in a whole new life-altering perspective.
The book takes you through Katie's laser-focused process of systematically destroying everything you thought you knew about life and simplifying it down to it's beautiful core. The book works its way around a number of topics, but the theme always comes back to "The Work", a simple set of questions that allows you to really see what is going on around you.
It's about how to wade through life without the weight that is currently on your shoulders. She takes you through an amazing journey that will show you that even in the worst of circumstances that the only villain is your own thoughts.
I've read all of Katie's work. I've met Katie in person. I love that this stuff isn't "pie-in-the-sky" pink-crystals-and-new-age-music stuff. It's real. It's very specific. It has changed real people's lives. And if you let it flood your mind, it will change you forever in a positive way.
To be specific, this guide is a compilation of many bits from her other books. However, because they are in small bites, they really strike you deep in your heart. I absolutely loved this book and plan to re-read it regularly.Question Your Thinking, Change The World: Quotations from Byron Katie Overview

Spiritual Divorce: Divorce as a Catalyst for an Extraordinary Life ReviewIf you are thinking about ending your marriage, seperated or already divorced, Debbie Ford shines a bright light on the path toward reclaiming your spirit. You can spend years in therapy or sit down and absorb the insights that Debbie offers as she shares candidly and with great passion, the journey to not only heal, but rediscover who you are and where you are headed.
In a quote from Proust Debbie captures how we must shift our vision when confronted with the pain, fear, anger and uncertainty that divorce bestows upon us - "The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes."
Through Ford's new eyes and personal divorce experience, we learn from and make peace with what we are leaving behind and focus on what new vistas and opportunities are opening up for us. She offers 7 spiritual laws for healing and takes us through these stages with examples that we can all relate to. We begin with acceptance and move along through various stages, including forgiveness and accepting responsiblity. We transform this experience into a new future, filled with the power, energy and knowledge we have gathered from this life lesson.
Debbie guides us through this journey with support, warmth and enthusiasm and the reader is left with the vision of unlimited opportunities by seeing tomorrow through "new eyes". I have read many books on divorce, but none as powerful, hopeful and motivating as "Spiritual Divorce". Thank you Ms. Ford for lighting the way for me.Spiritual Divorce: Divorce as a Catalyst for an Extraordinary Life Overview

Choosing Simplicity: Real People Finding Peace and Fulfillment in a Complex World ReviewThere are books on frugal living, cutting costs and you'll find plenty of those in here, or in any bookstore. But let's start with the premise that 21st century life for many people - especially those who can afford to browse the Internet, and shop on-line, is paced far too fast to be truly enjoyable. Read this book and you'll find personal stories of many people like you, like me, who have found ways to continue living in the world while bringing more meaning into their everyday lives. Not an instruction manual, not helpful hints for practical savings, it's an inspirational boost for those of us who know, in the back of our minds, that we are speeding PAST life at breakneck speed - while realizing that life is too precious and too short to live like we do.Choosing Simplicity: Real People Finding Peace and Fulfillment in a Complex World Overview

I Had It All the Time: When Self-Improvement Gives Way to Ecstasy ReviewTHE BOOK REVIEW:
The Good:
This book I highly reccommend. There isn't a book on the market in the self help genre that is better! I have been reading self help material for sixteen years and if I had this book my journey would have ended a long time ago. I have been soul searching for what feels like an eternity, trying zen buddhism, christianity, islam, kabbalah, and religions and philosophies that you probably haven't heard of. This book rescued me from co-dependency on other; books, techniques, and, the like, (it immediately helped me find myself). Today I am who I always wanted to be without trying to squeeze in someone elses tiny shoes. i.e , If into Zen, I would try to take on the whole lifestyle, reading of the books, ritual, and, follow the philosophies to the letter along with it.
....If you want to buy your last self help book then let this be it. Alan Cohen has given us an end all book. Whether you need money, a relationship, etc, this is your one stop shop. I promise you it will change your life for the better.
The Bad:
In a perfect world I would like this book to adhear to all religions. It favors christianity way too much(hence: references to a course in miracles throughout). However, I will admit it is the best self help book I have ever read. Christianity must be a "general accepted principle" amongst self help gurus.
Side Bar:
This book is the best kept secret (I didn't think there was a such thing) because (at the time of this writing)there are only ten reviews (it was published in 1994). It is a shame to have this book all to ourselves.
THE AUDIOS REVIEW:
I was fortunate enough to buy the audios on ebay for $2!!! Since I had already obtained the book for free I decided to get the audios, so, I would'nt have to read the book every time.
The Cons: The audios by themself have much left to be desired. Some of the stories from the book is not in the audios. The audios cut out my favorite story, (the one that is core to the book)!!! Another problem with these audios is Alan Cohen isn't who I thought he was. His voice is not someone I like to listen too (his voice is veeeery annoying). Also, when he speaks he talks on the audio as if he's reading a book to a classroom. If I had bought the audios without reading the book I would've returned or sold the tapes as soon as I had gotten them and would've been unimpressed with Mr. Cohen.
The Pro: I give the audio 3 stars only because the audio is a good compliment but, I repeat but, do not pay full price!!! Buy the audios from elsewhere only, only, as a compliment to the book,(that's if you feel you must have them that bad).I Had It All the Time: When Self-Improvement Gives Way to Ecstasy Overview

The Ecstacy of Loving God: Trances, Raptures, and the Supernatural Pleasures of Jesus Christ ReviewJohn Crowder's "The Ecstasy of Loving God" explores the supernatural and mystical experiences of divine encounters with God. It is a clarion call to become equipped and outfitted for the spiritual battles ahead.
Openly honest and brutally frank, John communicates a message of revival, mysticism, and revelation. Using the vernacular of today's drug culture Crowder presents a radical bold message of present day resurrection power.
The pages of the book are filled with exciting stories of people from every culture, every economic, social, and ethnic status who are hungry to find true spirituality by feasting at God's table.
John traces the history of the trance in the lives of Old Testament and New Testament stalwarts and throughout the accounts of revivals in the church. Extreme spontaneity, demonstrative worship, physical manifestations, and a call to repentance marked these movements of the Holy Spirit.
Crowder goes on to encapsulate the way of ecstatic prayer, its stages, distinguishing marks, and supernatural phenomena. In the final chapters Crowder reviews the history of the Great Awakening, discusses martyrdom, and end times revival.
"The Ecstasy of Loving God" is an important book for anyone wanting to know more of the heart of God, develop a life of contemplative prayer, or practice the presence of God. This message is clearly an invitation to all believers to "embrace the finished work of the cross" and to visit the heavenlies.

The Untethered Soul: The Journey Beyond Yourself ReviewI simply cannot say enough great things about this profound book! The Untethered Soul gets right down to business answering some of the deepest, soul searching questions I'd had for years but didn't know whom to ask. It's almost as if the author has seen into the inner-workings of my mind!
With very straight forward examples, the book emphasizes the pitfalls of relying on the mind to come up with ideas for making ourselves happy. The book points out that relying on the outside world for inner happiness just simply doesn't work. Happiness comes to us when we change and let go of ourselves at the deepest, innermost-level rather than changing the world outside.
The Untethered Soul helps to explain the crazy world around us where the unhampered ego creates conflict. This book is a step-by-step guide to the letting go of the ego - a process that may seem counter-intuitive initially, but ultimately leads to freedom from the nagging mind and heavy heart and directs you to the beauty of the self within.
The chapter on Contemplating Death has made me truly appreciate each living moment. I no longer want to waste time on energy depleting thoughts and feelings.
I am grateful that Michael Singer has written a book so deep that it could actually make a difference in people's lives and help to make the world a better place to live.
Consider yourself warned! Once you read this book, there is no turning back from The Untethered Soul within. The Untethered Soul: The Journey Beyond Yourself Overview

One Thousand Gifts: A Dare to Live Fully Right Where You Are ReviewI think this is one of those reviews that I'm going to take some heat over because I know this book and the author are very popular in Christian circles right now. That's why I wanted to read it myself, because I had heard so much about it.
First, the positive. I know several bloggers who are sharing their own 1000 gifts/gratitude lists and I'm always blessed to read them. I have kept my own accounting of what I call "grace notes" for years so I understand the blessing of looking for things to be thankful for. Voskamp shares from her heart with stories about her family and her own spiritual journey, and I think anyone reading this book would come away with a heightened sense of looking for God's grace in daily life whether it be having one's child come through surgery or the admiring the beauty of a full moon. I appreciate the encouragement to live life fully right where we are without feeling we need to work through a "bucket list" of daring experiences or exotic locations before we can be fulfilled.
But, this was a difficult book for me to read. Voscamp is obviously a poet at heart but the entire book is sing-songy with long descriptions and awkward word phrases and metaphors that I found distracting. It doesn't read as someone would actually talk in real life conversation.
As an example: "...tonight over our farm will rise the Great Hexagon of the blazing winter stars - Sirius, Rigel, ruby Aldebran, Capella, the fiery Gemini twins, and Procyon, and in the center, scarlet Betelgeuse, the red supergiant larger than twice the size of earth's orbit around the sun - and I will embrace the skin of a boy child that my body grew from a seed. The low heavens outside the paned windows fill with more snowflakes than stars, no two-stacked crystals the same; the trees in the wood draw in collective green breath to the still of January hibernation, and God in the world with birth ice from His womb, frost of heaven, bind the chains of the Pleiades, loose the cords of Orion, and number again the strands on my head."
Those who like this kind of poetic narrative with mystical undertones will enjoy this book. Those who don't will likely struggle to find the message in the sea of words. For me, it was just too much page after page, and it took me a while to finish the book because I had to take it in small doses.
I was also wary of the mystical/contemplative spirituality/emergent church references, as she references those known to be mystics, panentheists, universalists, or New Age authors such as Brother Lawrence, Henri Nouwen, Annie Dillard, Brennan Manning, Sarah Ban Breathnach, Teresa of Avila, and Dallas Willard, among others. The influence of the teachings of these various authors is apparent in Voskamp's writing.
In addition, I was uncomfortable with the chapter on making love to Jesus in which the author speaks of seeking communion with God in what can only be termed as sexual language, taking it to a level that I personally don't believe scripture intends. Voskamp writes, "Mystical union. This, the highest degree of importance. God as Husband in sacred wedlock, bound together, body and soul, fed by His body, quenched by His blood . . . God, He has blessed - caressed. I could bless God - caress with thanks. It's our making love. God makes love with grace upon grace, every moment a making of His love for us. . . . couldn't I make love to God, making every moment love for Him? To know Him the way Adam knew Eve. Spirit skin to spirit skin. . . The intercourse of soul with God is the very climax of joy . . . To enter into Christ and Christ enter into us - to cohabit."
Scripture doesn't teach that our relationship with God is to be a sexual, orgasmic experience or that we are to know him the way Adam as husband knew Eve as his wife. Further, what are children and men supposed to do with the notion of making love to Jesus?
Despite the doctrinal and personal issues with this book, I tried to stay focused on what I felt the author's intended message of the book was: live fully and abundantly in daily life by being thankful for the gifts that come from God's grace, no matter how small. I am inspired to live more fully in this kind of gratitude.
This review is simply my opinion of what was actually in the book and not a reflection on the author herself, whom I do not know personally. Her writing style just doesn't appeal to me and I have to question some of the "theology" in the book which is why I recommend discernment when reading it.
