If Life Is a Game, These Are the Rules ReviewFor all of you fans of the book, "Chicken Soup for the Soul", there is a new book out there that unveils the ten greatest rules about living life as a human being. In fact, the forward is written by Jack Canfield ( of 'Chicken Soup' fame) and has an interesting story. You see, the first version of Chicken Soup had a list called "The Ten Rules for Being Human" signed by 'anonymous'. Turns out, Dr. Cherie Carter-Scott was the author of those Ten Rules and, with a little encouragement, she's put together this fabulous little book to help us reprogram the gray matter in our skulls.
The book is laid out in an extremely easy to read format and divided into Ten Chapters, or Rules, if you will. In these 133 pages, are such eye opening revelations, such as: Chapter # 3 There Are No Mistakes Only Lessons and Chapter # 4 A Lesson is Repeated Until Learned. These two chapters alone are worth the price of admission! Time and again, you may have witnessed a friend, or even yourself repeating a situation in life, over and over. Whether it's always going out with the same type of people, trusting the wrong people, or simply making the most difficult choices, these are symptoms of not understanding that life will always present you with the same type of situations, until you have learned to master them. It's not bad luck, but probably unwise decision making that gives us the same outcome. Until a person makes a 'conscious' decision to adjust their cycle of thinking, and break out of the pattern, life will always seem to dole out the same rewards.
Another great chapter is #9: "All Your Answers Lie Inside of You". Sometimes we know what's best for us and we still decide to go against it. What you need, what you seek and who you are is embedded within you. This book is not about games, it's about living life to the fullest and achieving the next level of consciousness. In Pursuit of Purpose ReviewThis book is a major revelation. I have heard many people talk about purpose. But, no one has made the principle of purpose and destiny as simple as Dr. Myles Munroe has. He discussed the fact the God is the manufacturer of people and when He releases them from eternity into time, it is for a specific purpose. He brings to light that God had a special assignment for every individual that he creates and when he sends them to earth, there is a specific way that they are supposed to impact the earth while they are here. He compares humans to a product and discusses the fact that the manufacturer of a product has in mind when he creates the product, what he wants the product to do. Interestingly, he says when the product is not used for its intended purpose, it is being abnormally used, which is abuse. He also goes on to discuss how each product comes with a warranty and the warranty is good as long as the product is used for which the manufacturer created it. Basically, when we obey God and do what God sent us here to do, he always covers us and because we are under his warranty, we can always go back to him and be restored even if we get broken. This is a must read for every believer that really wants to understand why God created them.In Pursuit of Purpose Overview

Reading and working through one chapter a week, as recommended, gives you time to try out the exercises and assimilate the contents of each step, and become more aware of your developing psychic ability as well as the positive effects it will start to have on your life. What I liked about this book especially is that it seems to have gathered together in one place several tips that I have read in various books to "clear the path", to create space mentally, spiritually and physically (i.e. in terms of your immediate environment) for new experiences to enrich your life, be it new books, new clothes, a new class, new people, travel or whatever. There are also numerous anecdotes taken from Ms. Choquette's own life and those of her clients to help the reader understand the impact of each step. In fact don't be surprised if you often find yourself relating to quite a few of the stories and illustrations Ortberg uses to challenge his reader to get out of the boat and do what Jesus calls you to do even though you are very afraid.
Whatever your boat is, you will find this book delivers practical application and encouragement for the water-walker who chooses to step outside their comfort zone and trust God for great and mighty things. While this may sound grandiose, I believe Ortberg's approach is based in reality, noting that we should expect a few waves to slap us in the face, as he mentions, "failure comes with the territory - but so does the strong hand of Jesus pulling you up when the bottom drops out."
Wherever you are on your spiritual journey, this book is a must read. Taming Your Gremlin: A Surprisingly Simple Method for Getting Out of Your Own Way ReviewThis is a simply written book that contains very powerful and useful ideas about managing your inner critic. It focuses on mindfulness of your process and disidentifying with the voices in your head that undermine you on a daily basis.
Some of the keys to this approach are being curious rather than critical about what is happening in the moment. This leads to an awareness that allows one to penetrate old conditioned patterns and achieve a state a heightened state of awareness that leads to conscious choice rather than unconscious acting out. It also encourages a playful and experimental approach to playing with new options which is helpful for people who take themselves seriously and have difficulty trying on new behaviors.
This book is fun to read, but like some of the other reviews, I agree that the metaphor of the "gremlin" is pushed to its limits of usefulness. On the other hand, the book is quite entertaining. I must admit at times I found myself annoyed by the recurring gremlin analogies, but I know other people who have read this found it to be a strong point.
The exercises in this book are very good and like that the author included space in the book to record observations and written answers from exercises.
