Group Leadership Skills: Interpersonal Process in Group Counseling and Therapy ReviewAs a high school counselor who has led many groups, both adolescent and adult, I am constantly searching for literature to better help me serve the group process. I consider myself fairly well-read in the areas of counseling, group leadership, and the group process. With that said, I am thoroughly impressed with this book by Chen and Rybak. Thus far, it is the most clearly written and most valuable book I have read on this subject. I find myself continually revisiting chapters over and over as I try to implement the skills and ideas outlined in this book. I believe that this book is definitely a must have for anyone interested in the group counseling process.
I like the book's many strengths (clear examples, helpful exercises, accessible and fluid language), but if I have to single out its greatest strength, then it would be its roadmap approach to the group process. As I read the book, I find myself challenged to examine my own ideas and beliefs as they relate to the field. I have to ask myself what my basic assumptions are about the interpersonal process. Starting from the beginning chapters, this book helps me establish a solid foundation from where I start my leadership journey.
Part Two (Basic Leadership Skills) of this book will be especially helpful for the beginning, less experienced group leaders. It takes the reader through the stepwise approach of starting a group from scratch, leading the first session, establishing a session's pace and feel, working on members' agendas, and working with tension and conflict. Chapter 6 "Working on Agendas" especially provides the readers with a powerful roadmap to follow. With its accessible language, a young counselor does not feel intimidated by the process, but instead, empowered.
Part Three (Advanced Leadership Skills) adds the flesh and muscle to the skeleton. This part can be extremely beneficial for the counseling students, although it really outlines the skills of a veteran group therapist. I love the way Chen and Rybak illustrate how counseling is more than just a series of skills and theories, but a very precise art that takes patience, touch, balance, and know-how. The advanced skills gives the readers something to strive for, while at the same time, further providing the veterans with challenges and approaches that keep the art fresh. Topics that I take special note include: Taking Risks in Communication, Stirring the Pot, and the Hot-Seat Method. Many excellent models for these advanced methods are provided.
I appreciate the authors' emphasis on the importance of reflective journal writing by the members and narrative session notes by the leaders. Throughout the text, Chen and Rybak offer excellent writing samples for both the group members and for the group leader. I like the way the authors close the circle by asking the reader to search inside for his own therapeutic voices and by challenging the reader to continue to grow and to live by the creative edge.
What I take most from the book, even more than the powerful skills and approaches offered, is the compassion, respect, and enthusiasm that the authors show for their subjects. They truly believe in the art of group counseling and the art of leading a successful group. They believe in the power of group. That passion permeates each page and washes over the reader. This book, in many ways, transcends the counseling field and speaks of truths that can be applied to all fields. I gained so much from this book and I will continue to use it as I continue to grow as a counselor, and more importantly, as a person. I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in the helping profession, especially students, and to anyone who wants to better his or her leadership and communication skills.Group Leadership Skills: Interpersonal Process in Group Counseling and Therapy Overview

Speaking Truth In Love ReviewSpeaking Truth In Love is the lastest book by David Powlison, a faculty member at Westminister Theological Seminary and The Christian Counseling & Educational Foundation. In his own words, it is, "a book on how we are to live together." Although primarily directed at pastors and counselors, there is much here to be savored by every child of God. Indeed, an emphasis of the book is that speaking truth in love, wisdom, and grace into another person's life is both the privilege and responsibility for every Christian, not just the "professionals" or the "trained."
There are seventeen chapters, which are really separate essays all looking at differing facets of counseling, or "loving another person well" as Powlison puts it.
Chapter 1 is an extended reflection of Psalm 119, beautifully portraying it as the cry of a faithful heart toward God. It is worth the price of the book for anyone struggling through a trial or helping another.
Chapter 2 talks about the need to face the truth of our rebellious flesh, while chapter 3 talks of hearing the music of the gospel. Chapter 4-8 deal with various practical steps of preparation, listening, and questioning, while chapter 9 specifically deals with gently handling people who have already been immersed in the false psychologies of the world.
Chapter 10 starts looking at a more global emphasis, challenging pastors (and all) to consider that most of the "ministry of the Word" that Christ actually did was what we would now term private and small-group counseling, and not preaching sermons. Chapter 11 looks at how counseling should fit into the ministry of the church, and chapter 12 looks specifically at how the nature of prayer fits into counseling in the church.
The last chapters look at pastoral counseling, women in counseling, when to refer, where to train, and lastly a guiding doctrinal statement for Biblical counseling.
This is a rewarding book written by a wise servant of God, giving insight and direction on both the nature and the challenges the church faces in fulfilling our mandate on speaking truth in love to each other.

The Unwanted Gift of Grief: A Ministry Approach (Haworth Pastoral Press Religion and Mental Health) ReviewTim has the combined gifts of wisdom, professional and personal experience, education and a "knowing heart", which makes this book an outstanding resource for anyone who has received the unwanted gift of grief. I read his book three times during the first month after my son was killed. I also attended a weekend seminar he facilitated on grief, which helped me understand this turn in my spiritual journey into the "wilderness".The Unwanted Gift of Grief: A Ministry Approach (Haworth Pastoral Press Religion and Mental Health) Overview

The Psychic Pathway: A Workbook for Reawakening the Voice of Your Soul ReviewThe Psychic Pathway is a 12-week plan on how to develop your intuition and psychic awareness to live your life more fully. Reading and working through one chapter a week, as recommended, gives you time to try out the exercises and assimilate the contents of each step, and become more aware of your developing psychic ability as well as the positive effects it will start to have on your life. What I liked about this book especially is that it seems to have gathered together in one place several tips that I have read in various books to "clear the path", to create space mentally, spiritually and physically (i.e. in terms of your immediate environment) for new experiences to enrich your life, be it new books, new clothes, a new class, new people, travel or whatever. There are also numerous anecdotes taken from Ms. Choquette's own life and those of her clients to help the reader understand the impact of each step. Even if you don't do the exercises, just reading the book will change you and your approach to life. The Psychic Pathway: A Workbook for Reawakening the Voice of Your Soul Overview

The Half-Lived Life: Overcoming Passivity and Rediscovering Your Authentic Self ReviewOur perceptions of passivity may often conjure up images of a meek, submissive and non-assertive individual who lacks desire and drive, the kind of person who shrinks from life or is lazy or a gifted procrastinator. But, what if you see yourself as highly goal oriented and ambitious, yet feel as though you are being pulled in the opposite direction of where you want to go? What if you actually feel inadequate, overwhelmed and unfulfilled? Do you sometimes ask yourself, "Am I being all that I can be?" If so, do you ever wonder what's getting in the way?
John Lee's latest book, The Half-Lived Life, answers these questions and more. He defines what passivity actually is and how it can play a role in our lives and reveals how our subconscious fears, grief, rage, and a sense of worthlessness can inhibit us from moving towards what we say we aspire to be; towards our true authentic self. Lee compassionately dives into the heart of emotional suffering and knows first-hand the struggles of the human spirit and the difficulties we can face in finding our own sense of purpose and value. Without a strong sense of worthiness, and without the tools to safely express the deeper emotions tied to our core beliefs about who we are, our dreams, passions, loves and creative efforts fail to fully flourish and become fruitful living experiences for us.
In The Half Lived Life, Lee continues to educate us on the complexities of the human condition. He takes us down his own well-traveled roads and uses his own personal stories and life experiences rather than the overly-used clinical "how to" models to help us understand our own passivity and how it impacts our lives.
This touching book offers a safe and non-judgmental way for each of us to begin to explore the mysteries of how our lives may be only half, rather than fully, lived. It sews together, with a tender hand, all the common and colorful threads that create the rich and complex tapestry of what it means to be human, and yet, it allows the art of what you see in it and gain from it, to be completely and uniquely you. The Half-Lived Life may be your story; it could be all of our stories. It is certainly mine and I am grateful for the great wisdom of this book.

The Peacemaker: A Biblical Guide to Resolving Personal Conflict ReviewThe Peacemaker is the most helpful guide I have found to assist Christians in resolving conflict. It takes an uncommonly Biblical approach, leading one through a process designed to foster reconciliation, to God's glory. One is instructed in ways to "get the log out of your eye"; to "go and show your brother his faults," and to "go and be reconciled." These principles are applied to a variety of situations: third-party conciliation, forgiveness, confession, church discipline, self-examination, conflict assessment, and more.
Sande continually reminds his readers that conflict is a great opportunity to see the Gospel lived out in radical ways. By this God is glorified in ways the world cannot explain. This must be the focus of all peacemaking: "whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God" (I Cor. 10:31).
While Sande provides an abundance of practical techniques for implementing his understanding of Biblical principle of peacemaking, these by themselves cannot accomplish what is needed. The methods only provide opportunities for reconciliation, but true reconciliation is always a heart issue. In the end, all of Sande's steps and procedures must happen through faith alone in Christ alone. Apart from him we can do nothing (John 15:5). And simply going through the motions, however precisely, cannot serve as a substitute for the work of the Holy Spirit, who alone can apply Christ's work of reconciliation to us. Conflict may cease on the surface, and hostilities can be contained or sublimated, but true reconciliation cannot happen apart from the Holy Spirit giving the parties a growing experience of what Christ has done to reconcile us to the Father (2 Cor. 5:18-20).
Since teaching the Peacemaker c.e. series in 2000, I have seen these concepts at work in the life of our church family. I stock extra copies of the "Peacemaker Pledge" pamphlet on our fellowship table on Sundays and in my office. I have been amazed at how this tool can often humble people and redirect the focus of their concerns from their own agenda to God's glory.
But I have also seen the Peacemaker materials misused. People can go through the steps of Sande's book explicitly and methodically, but the focus can be misdirected from God's glory to the person's own hurt. If one starts from a self-righteous place it can poison all the steps of Sande's book.
This is a reminder that we cannot engineer what we desire, but are completely dependant on the Lord's grace for true reconciliation. The only One capable of real peacemaking is "the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep" (Heb. 13:20).

Discipleship Counseling: The Complete Guide to Helping Others Walk in Freedom and Grow in Christ ReviewThis is a much needed book for pastors and lay counsellors as well as professional counsellors. He goes into the HEART of therapy, rather than the PROCESS of therapy and puts repentance at the top of his list. Even when working with non-believers, as a counsellor, I still work from the Biblical perspective and it works just the same for them, using the prinicples in this book. I just call things different names (Good and Evil, Positive and Negative, etc, instead of God and Satan).
The only criticism I have is his focus on the devil, which lets people off the hook for their self responsibility. The focus would better have been placed on the grace of God because when people have the revelation of grace, they will WANT to please the Lord and walk in His Spirit.
Nevertheless, it is a great book that will speak to helpers' hearts and the hearts of those they are helping.Discipleship Counseling: The Complete Guide to Helping Others Walk in Freedom and Grow in Christ Overview

The Gift of Therapy: An Open Letter to a New Generation of Therapists and Their Patients ReviewTwenty years ago when I read Irvin Yalom's Theory and Practice of Group Psychotherapy, I knew that I wanted to be a psychotherapist. These 20 years later, reading The Gift of Therapy, I am reminded that I made an excellent choice.
Irv Yalom's "open letter to a new generation of therapists and their patients" speaks to three essential aspects of myself: the psychotherapist, the human being, and the writer.
As a psychotherapist I am validated for thinking outside the traditional boxes and challenged to keep learning with every client I see. Yalom offers everything from specific suggested questions to ask clients to the wisdom of his experience such as "therapy should not be theory-driven, but relationship-driven," and "though the physicality of death destroys us, the idea of death can save us."
As a human being I am reminded that there is seldom --- if ever --- only one valid explanation for how we become who we are. And I am enlightened by Yalom's reminder of Paul Tilich's list of four "ultimate concerns" --- death, isolation, meaning, and freedom.
As a writer I am thoroughly entertained by how Yalom puts a sentence together. For instance, speaking of the importance of dream interpretation in therapy, he writes, "Pillage and loot the dream, take out of it whatever seems valuable, and don't fret about the discarded shell."
Most of all, as I close my now well-worn, underlined and dog-eared copy of Irv Yalom's new book, I am inspired by the man and the psychotherapist who has been, and remains, a hero of mine. (I suppose Irv would consider that literary transference.)
Bottomline: great book for therapists and non-therapists alike. The Gift of Therapy: An Open Letter to a New Generation of Therapists and Their Patients Overview

The Handbook for Spiritual Warfare: Revised & Updated ReviewThe Handbook For Spiritual Warfare by Dr. Ed Murphy addresses an area critically missing from the teaching of most mainline theological denominations. Over the centuries since our Lord completed His redeeming work here on earth, the Church seems to have lost sight of the almost invisible raging spiritual battles that our Lord clearly dealt with during His brief physical time on earth. The resulting carnage of evil influence is all around us in drugs, weapons, and crushed lives. The apostle Paul found it necessary to spend much time tutoring and strengthening his fledgling churches on exactly what was happening and how our enemy literally attacks God's work. Likewise, Dr. Murphy methodically traces the teachings on spiritual warfare from Genesis to Revelation. His work is dramatically illustrated with his global experiences of power encounters with enemy spiritual forces. The church today definitely needs to re-awake to the battle around us and become aware of the enemy's great power and tactics. This book brings good balance to the topic. Unlike some who consider deliverance a single event, Dr. Murphy shows the need for a more encompassing approach. His 45-10-45 time rule explains that the actually deliverance comprises only 10% of the time needed to successfully deliver the oppressed from the bondage of Satan's minions. He encourages that 45% of the time is needed for pre-deliverance (preparation of the counselee to understand what is happening in their lives and the need to seek deliverance) and 45% in post deliverance counseling to assure that they can continue to succeed in being free and avoid a return to worse demonization (Matthew 12:43-45). The book does a great job in showing Christians the need to root out the "sin handles" in our own lives that enable Satan and his demons to get a foothold. We seem to have little idea how bitterness, anger, unforgiveness, and other reactionary sins can compromise our life and witness. The newly added chapter on the "Dangers and Pitfalls of Spiritual Warfare" is outstanding in helping us keep everything in perspective and avoid excessives. Overall this large book is well worth the effort to get grounded in an essential area needed to spiritually survive and succeed in today's world. The battle is growing larger everyday and we need to prepare for it.The Handbook for Spiritual Warfare: Revised & Updated Overview

What Do I Say: The Therapist's Guide to Answering Client Questions ReviewThis book really is fantastic. I picked it up at a store the other day and just had to have it!! It tackles the questions clients ask a therapist all throughout their therapy with you, from the initial phone call and on. The author teaches us what's behind these questions and gives clear, professional, yet warm responses that always put the client first without compromising boundaries or the therapist's personality. I'm very, very impressed and I am thrilled that a book like this is finally on the market. There is another book out there called "What Therapists Say and Why" that's about 95% useless, but "What Do I Say?" is really worth it!!What Do I Say: The Therapist's Guide to Answering Client Questions Overview

The Five Languages of Apology: How to Experience Healing in all Your Relationships ReviewThe first thing I had to do when I received my copy of The Five Languages of Apology was to take The Apology Language Profile in the back of the book. I approached it in the happy, fun way I used to look at surveys in women's magazines until the very first question stopped me dead in my tracks. Since it was about how a spouse should apologize for failing to acknowledge a wedding anniversary, it hit home right away. I knew this was going to be a serious book and that it would bring up some very raw emotions. My husband had recently intended to acknowledge our anniversary with a beautiful gift, but it was stolen from his car before he had the chance, and nothing more was said or done about it. Even though I knew my husband was not to blame, I needed someone to take responsibility and there was no one to do that thus creating an unresolved issue we would eventually work through. As I read more of the questions, I experienced emotions ranging from sadness to anger and by the end of it I realized that very few people had ever apologized to me at all let alone took the time to figure out my apology language! It made perfect sense to me that my preferred apology language is accepting responsibility, since people who come from dsyfunctional homes often long for someone to own up to what he or she has done or said, and because this rarely happens, communication becomes distorted. In the midst of my own issues this book was addressing, I was comforted by the words Chapman and Thomas used to lead me from feeling very alone and rejected because of the lack of apologies given to me, to experiencing some healing and closure due to the new understanding I have been given. I have also become much more aware of the apologies I see in movies and in my relationships with friends. I do believe that if we could get to the point of being willing to apologize, even if we have to stumble through it at first, we would broaden our ability to truly love one another. The Five Languages of Apology: How to Experience Healing in all Your Relationships Overview

Sacred Necessities: Gifts for Living with Passion, Purpose, and Grace ReviewIn a wonderful way "Sacred Necessities" reads like the side panel on a breakfast cereal box. Nutrition Facts tell us what is included in the packaged cereal. It is a reminder that our human physical bodies need a constant input of vitamins and minerals. Likewise, Terry Hershey reminds us that our spiritual well-being has come essential sacred necessities to keep our lives functioning efficiently. In the book Terry limits these essentials to seven, acknowledging that there are others that might equally belong in the required reading. In my own spiritual journey I find what he says in the introductory chapter, "Leaning the Big Leaf Dance" to be totally freeing. In my early years, like many of us old-timers, we were not permitted to dance. It has been a regret that is hard to overcome. In any event, now when I sing the hymn "We're marching to Zion" I change the words to "We're Dancing to Zion." Marching feels more like keeping in step with the dogmas and creeds of the church. It is like taking another course in Systematic Theology. It that is heretical, then so be it. Theology, as I read it in "Sacred Necessities", is unfolding in the moments of Amazement, Sanctuary, Stillness, Grace, Simplicity, Resilience, and Friendship more than it is in the requirements to toe the line in theological necessities. I don't want to say that Terry Hershey would agree with me, but it is my inner feeling in reading his book. And I believe that is Terry's precise objective in leading us into self-enrichment times. I am a note-taker when reading books. But I had to give that up in reading "Sacred Necessities". Each page had something that I wanted to become a part of my life journey. Sometimes we hear about a person's "near-death experience". In reading this book I often had a "near-life experience." We read this though page 179 when Terry reports that "the religion of my youth taught me about life after death. I never heard one sermon on life before death. So, it is a challenge to every reader of this book to go through the necessities and not feel that there is certainly life before death. In eating an ice cream cone I am a "licker" not a "biter". I want to savor the experience and the taste. "O taste and see. . ." is the invitation in the reading of this book. Do not sit down and read it non-stop. Every day of my life I find that there is something like a battle going on that tends to diminish what I am as a spiritual being. And, in addition, I find that this usually does not come in dramatic or heroic moments of memorable accounting. It most often happens in the little things. When I live the sacred necessities the little thing have the greater control in my spiritual journey. The Divine provides in these moments what is needed to not only endure, but to insure a victory over the forces that are trying to diminish my inner growth. The Gift of Anger: Seven Steps to Uncover the Meaning of Anger and Gain Awareness, True Strength, and Peace ReviewThis book is really powerful and very different from other anger management books that I have read - and it's power stems from its differences. Some of the better books teach you how to explore your anger to determine its root causes, but what makes Dr. Cannon's book so special is that she lays out some very simple yet very powerful next steps to literally change your anger's root causes to make them a source of strength for you instead of a source of perpetual triggers for your anger. I read this book and I learned how to understand the real underlying causes of my anger, and then learned how to turn these root causes into sources of strength for me. That is A Gift of Anger's power, and that is what makes it so different, and ultimately so much more accessible and actionable than other anger management books. Dr. Cannon's writing is very fluid and the examples and exercises are very intelligent and relevant, and the book is surprisingly easy to read. But what makes this book so special are the concrete steps in which she shows how to transform from being a person with deep-seated emotional anger triggers to being a person with strength and power... and peace. When the root causes of your anger transform into sources of strength, what you are left with is a sense of control and a sense of confidence that you no longer need to be a victim of anger and anger-related behavior. And that is truly life-changing.The Gift of Anger: Seven Steps to Uncover the Meaning of Anger and Gain Awareness, True Strength, and Peace Overview

The Gift of Being Yourself: The Sacred Call to Self-Discovery ReviewPerhaps the best book on Christian Identity I've read and the best book I've read this year. Benner drives home the profound yet paradoxically simple nature of our relationship to self and others through our relationship with the Divine. In "The Gift of Being Yourself" Benner outlines practical ways to improve your relationship with the Divine and through relationship with the Divine begin to understand our true self and calling. I read this after reading Benner's "Surrender to Love." The two go hand-in-hand, but I recommend reading "The Gift of Being Yourself" before reading "Surrender to Love" (just my opinion). The Gift of Being Yourself: The Sacred Call to Self-Discovery Overview
