A Pen And A Path: Writing As A Spiritual Practice (An Explorefaith.Org Book) ReviewSarah Stockton's A Pen and a Path: Writing as a Spiritual Practice provides a wealth of material for individual journal writers and for groups. The author's five-step exercises gently invite readers to explore their personal spirituality at deeper levels than other personal writing books that I've read do. This significant book will become a well-loved writing classic.

Women, Writing, and Soul-Making: Creativity and the Sacred Feminine ReviewNot your ordinary how-to manual, Peggy Tabor Millin's Women, Writing and Soul-Making: Creativity and the Sacred Feminine is a unique and inspiring blend of the poetic, spiritual and practical in which the author seeks a balance between "feminine being and masculine doing." Intentionally written in what she perceives is a more feminine form, each chapter spirals back to what has gone before, delving deeper and deeper into each concept. As she explains, "The feminine writes in circles, makes leaps, tells the truth with dream, imagery, and metaphor, and relies on inner knowing. The masculine approach makes outlines, develops linearly from premise to conclusion, and relies on outside authority." Struggling for a structure which honors both, Tabor Millin achieves a synthesis of the intuitive and the cognitive which is the foundation of any creative endeavor.
Unlike many purely intuitive books, Women, Writing and Soul-Making also provides important guidelines that organize and inspire our task of writing more, writing deeper and finding our own voice. She begins with "The Three Steps" of focusing on the sensations of the body to keep ourselves centered, the often recommended free-writing to random prompts, and developing a practice that includes regular writing in a supportive circle of women. She describes an inner being she calls "the observer" who helps us notice without judgment and silences the inner critic who gets in the way of our free expression. She then outlines three obstacles: believing there should be no obstacles, listening to the "I cant's" instead of the "I wills," and searching for an outside authority instead of relying on our own inner guides.
Her "Four Wisdoms" give us access to this inner guidance. "The wisdom of not knowing" tells us we must face our dark and unknown shadow in order to find the truth which will transform our writing and our lives. "The wisdom of the ecology of body and earth" leads us "out of our heads and into our bodies" so we can discover our own voice. "The wisdom of fierce compassion" encourages us to look at the ugly and painful without flinching and to use our anger as motivation for action. "The wisdom of diversity" allows us to tolerate other opinions and helps us make peace with the fact that our writing may not resonate with everyone.
"The Four Paradoxes" teach us to accept that writing is both "pleasure and pain," that we must accept both "praise and criticism," that we desire and simultaneous fear both "fame and disgrace," and that we must reconcile ourselves to both "gain and loss" since we will have to give up an old world view to bring something new into being. "No way exists to make this gain other than to accept that discomfort, anxiety, and insecurity are necessary" she writes. "We consent to uneasiness as motivation for the creative journey--which is no less than our spiritual journey toward self-realization."
As a writer, musician and composer I found Women, Writing and Soul-Making an excellent guide for any creative endeavor. In this wise and wonderful book there is much, much more to inspire not only writers but anyone seeking to heal her artistic self, to explore her inner feminine and find a path to her own voice, her own truth. An absolute must, it deserves an honored place on a nearby shelf beside the likes of Natalie Goldberg and Julia Cameron.

In Parables: The Challenge of the Historical Jesus (Eagle Books) ReviewJohn Dominic Crossan stands in my mind as one of the most lucid, honest, and forthright biblical scholar of our day. His many publications testify to his integrity and extensive scholarship. I did not read this book when it was first publishd in 1973, but have had the good fortune of having a good friend, the retired rector of an Episcopal church, donate me this book. Since I have read most of the lastest publications of Crossan, I find in this one the same sound interpretation of the parables of Jesus. This is not only a commentary, but a scholarly introduction to the literary genre that the historical Jesus employed to convey the core of his message, which is so often completely misunderstood. I recommend this book very highly to anyone who shares the new understanding of the historical Jesus, so well explored by the Westar Institute. In Parables: The Challenge of the Historical Jesus (Eagle Books) Overview

Story Line: Finding Gold in Your Life Story ReviewJen Grisanti leads you on a treasure hunt into the hidden caves within yourself and teaches you how to mine them for the golden keys that open the connections between you, your stories, and an audience.
You begin the journey by observing and creating maps, also known as loglines, from your own life experiences. Jen goes into the depths of the four key elements within each logline (set-up, dilemma, action, & goal) by not only sharing her own personal experiences as examples, but also includes films like The Hurt Locker, Up In The Air, Avatar, Pretty Woman, The Blind Side, Good Will Hunting and Rocky, along with T.V. shows like Dexter, Mad Men, The Good Wife, The Sopranos, Lost, Big Love and Glee.
What you gain from Jen's unique techniques is a better understanding of and connection with yourself; in turn, making it easier to connect with your audience through your stories. While each of us may have different backgrounds and stories, we all share a common thread that unites us and weaves through all stories: the emotions behind every experience. I highly recommend Story Line for all writers who want to find their unique voice and have it echo for others to hear and follow.

Journalution: Journaling to Awaken Your Inner Voice, Heal Your Life and Manifest Your Dreams ReviewI honestly think people could save a lot of money on therapy bills if we all kept journals like Sandy suggests.
I was a bit skeptical when I started reading-- why do I need a book to tell me how to write a journal?-- but my eyebrows became less furrowed as she won me over with really delicious prompts. That was the most valuable part for me; the prompts are get-to-the-core exercises, not trivial games. Even as I read them, my brain went into overdrive about all the things I wanted to write down.
We all get to know ourselves better when we write down our experiences, our hopes, our frustrations. In doing so, we can be better in our other roles, too... when you learn to turn to your journal in times of stress, you tend to be much calmer when talking to the people who are contributing to your stress! In short, get your temper out on the page instead of blowing up at loved ones. Sandy's book favors substance over style, which I loved. It got me on the path toward the right questions to ask myself so I can find the right answers.
If you're interested in writing therapeutically and becoming clearer about what you need to do to make yourself happy and/or fulfill your goals, this is a great book for guidance. Enjoy the path of self-discovery!

The Craft of Fiction ReviewThis, like E. M. Forster's "Aspects of the Novel," is an essential work of criticism, and it's nice to see it back in print. Lubbock's outlook is an extension of Henry James's. He is more immediately accessible than the Master, and he illustrates the "craft" by reference to classic novels such as Tolstoy's "Anna Karenina," Flaubert's "Madame Bovary," Thackeray's "Vanity Fair," and of course James's own works, particularly "The Ambassadors." Lubbock, Forster, F. R. Leavis's "The Great Tradition," and Ian Watt's "Rise of the Novel" give you what you need to know if you want to understand the central canon in Anglo-American and European fiction. The Craft of Fiction Overview

The Complete Artist's Way: Creativity as a Spiritual Practice ReviewThe exercises in the first part of this "trilogy" is more than worth the price of the book. If you choose to do the exercises, your creativity will be released/unblocked. What a positive response this book is for really anyone who wants to live more creatively. If you want to think of yourself as an artist, or if you never thought of yourself as an artist before, this book is for you. I have already given it as a gift and I'm not even half way through with the reading/journaling/pondering. It would be a tremendous book for your local library. Then, use it on a solo journey or work through it with a group. GigiThe Complete Artist's Way: Creativity as a Spiritual Practice Overview

A Walk Between Heaven and Earth: A Personal Journal on Writing and the Creative Process ReviewA Walk Between Heaven and Earth is a great book not only for creative writers, but for everyone who wants to lead a more satisfying life. Holzer's journal entries transmit a deep understanding of what it means to be a writer and what it means to be fully alive. I felt gently and powerfully guided by her personal life experiences to break away from the analytical rules that have kept me from writing what really moves me. And my own writing process has become ten times more exciting than it ever was in years of college classes and work as a magazine editor. This book has helped me embrace my own pain and joy in a way I had never considered.A Walk Between Heaven and Earth: A Personal Journal on Writing and the Creative Process Overview

Timeless Youth Ministry: A Handbook for Successfully Reaching Todays Youth ReviewIn my experience, youth are often the most targeted yet the most missed age demographic in the church. Statistics show that after going away to college, most churched teens simply leave and don't come back, a lifetime of youth group leaving little impact on their adult lives. With certain current events in my life, this issue has some great personal relevance to me and left me wondering what the Church can do to ensure that our youth ministry is successful.
Lee Vukich and Steve Vandegriff, in their book Timeless Youth Ministry, have helped me answer that question. In this comprehensive manual, they cover everything from a definition of adolescence to how to plan a yearly event calendar. Beginning with an analysis of contemporary youth culture and contemporary youth ministry, Vukich and Vangegriff examine the similarities and differences and provide many practical ways in which the two can be made to intersect. Their conclusion is hopeful: youth are looking for Christ, Churches need to figure out how to make them see Him.
Another major part of the book focuses on teenagers and the search for identity. The question of Who Am I? first surfaces in the age of adolescence and Vukich and Vandegriff note that this is prime time for the Church to be training their youth that they are children of God. The chapter entitled "A Biblical Perspective of Identity" is short and sweet but offers a great overview of how teens--or anyone--should perceive their identity.
The core of the book discusses the purposes and goals of youth ministry. Basically, the message is simple: Discipleship, baptism, and education. Within each of these sections, they offer practical suggestions for hitting each aspect of these core areas. Also discussed is the person of the youth pastor. Noting that the concept of "youth pastor" is absent in the Bible, they define the pastor merely as one who has a focus on and specialization in youth. Vukich and Vangegriff caution readers not to view the youth pastor as a step to "higher levels" as it often is among clergy or unimportant (as in "he gets paid to play") as it is often viewed by laity, but as an integral part of Christian ministry. After all, since the vast majority of people become Christians as children, one could argue that youth ministry is more important evangelistically than most adult ministries.
The chapters on teaching methods and programming youth ministry are absolutely vital and serve as the book's most practical chapters. Some of the suggestions and techniques here are ones I'll be returning to in order to review and implement over and over again--and many I already have. This book should be on every youth pastor's shelf and in every church's library.Timeless Youth Ministry: A Handbook for Successfully Reaching Todays Youth Overview

The Poet's Companion: A Guide to the Pleasures of Writing Poetry ReviewI almost ruled out reading this book when I read the author's (to me) bold statement on page 225: "Can you write a poem in 20 minutes? We seriously doubt it."
Being, at times, a very fast poet, I *gasped* when I read that assertion! (Don't ask me how I got to page 225 before I read the rest of the book but nonetheless, it stuck out to me!)
I kept at it, though, and found my way through the original assessment and into many of the glorious exercises, the truth in words that I so resonate with such as "We don't believe in writer's block. We believe there are times when you are empty and times when you are full."
The section on Metrical poetry is truly magical - I enjoyed learning about how Free-Verse as a form blossomed as well.
There are also many, many valuable resources in the appendices such as Books on Poetry and Writing, Finding Markets for Your Poetry and More Resources for Writers.
Finally, this book is chock full of exercises so that you can continue picking it up and revisit, use, revisit, use some more, revisit over and over again. Definitely worth the investment AND I am so glad I didn't toss it all because of one difference in opinion. The Poet's Companion: A Guide to the Pleasures of Writing Poetry Overview
