Thou Art That: Transforming Religious Metaphor ReviewTHOU ART THAT is the first volume in THE COLLECTED WORKS OF JOSEPH CAMPBELL which contains materials gathered from previously uncollected essays, letters, diaries, articles and lectures. As such it presents a broad sampling of Campbell's work on mythology and the Western religions.
Campbell believes that the stories in the Bible should be read metaphorically. By interpreting events historically institutional religions create a problem. When people realize that the events probably did not take place, then the power of the message is diminished. Examples of such events are the Fall of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden and the Exodus from Egypt.
A fairly thorough discussion is introduced in Chapter VI of Judo-Christian symbols such as the Virgin Birth, Judas and the Flight into Egypt. Here we see why Campbell is so much admired for the breadth of his knowledge of mythology and his ability to bring this learning to bear on Jewish and Christian origins.
In one of the more interesting parts of the book Campbell describes the basic differences between the world religions of creed which are Buddhism, Christianity and Islam and the leading ethnic religions of birth which are Hinduism, Judaism and Shintoism.
Often Campbell points out that our ideas of the universe are being reordered by our experience in space. There are no horizons in space causing many people to retreat into fundamentalism.
For a small book THOU ART THAT is filled with much food for thought. I highly recommend it and am looking forward to reading future volumes in this series.Thou Art That: Transforming Religious Metaphor Overview

Coming Out Spiritually: The Next Step ReviewThis book is easy to read and yet full of precise scholarly prose. A must-read for those of the LGBT community who are spiritual or are struggling with spiritual issues.
As a bisexual woman, I found that this book included me instead of the trend of a lot of books on gay issues which cater specifically to the male community. I was very impressed with Christian's style and evocative language. Having met him recently at the SF Book Festival, I found that as a speaker, he is equally as eloquent and feels very strongly about his work in the LGBT community.
Anyone wondering about what religions really feel about homosexuality? Check out Appendix 1 which includes "snapshots" of many religions.
I recommend this book to anyone in the LGBT community or someone who has a loved one in the LGBT community and is wondering about spiritual issues.Coming Out Spiritually: The Next Step Overview

America's Religions: From Their Origins to the Twenty-first Century ReviewAmerica's Religions: From Their Origins To The Twenty-First Century by Peter W. Williams (Distinguished Professor of Comparative Religions and American Studies, Miami University, Oxford, Ohio) is a massive, comprehensive, meticulous study of the religious movements that have shaped the United States and ranges from Native American religions and early European colonization era communities of faith to the religious modernism and pluralism of the twentieth century. Divided into fifty-five chapters, the scholarly narrative path traces a long road across centuries of human belief. America's Religions is a fascinating read and a sweeping historical analysis which is very highly recommended for History Of Religion supplemental reading lists and reference collections.America's Religions: From Their Origins to the Twenty-first Century Overview

Living Buddha, Living Christ ReviewWhen you begin to read it you can see it is written by a Zen master because Thich Nhat Hanh is able to say much with few words. I am a Christian and this book introduced me to Buddhism. Nearly every sentence would cause me to stop in my tracks and think. I was introduced to many completely new ideas and philosophies through the course of this book. Although I will never be a Buddhist and I do not agree with everything Thich Nhat Hanh believes, I have a great respect for their beliefs as well as others. It also helped me to understand Christianity and Christ's message, and shaped my own beliefs. You will gain a lot of cultural and philosophical insight if you read this book.Living Buddha, Living Christ Overview

Zen Gifts to Christians ReviewThis is a small, but very wise and compassionate book. It is difficult to keep from reading it at a sitting, but even then it invites rereading perhaps many times, not just to try to penetrate the obscurity that necessarily cloaks all things Zen, but to rise to the challenges each chapter sets one's personal growth. The Catholic Church has discovered at Vatican II the working of the Spirit and the presence of the good beyond its borders and even the possibility that members of that Church might learn from those without. Who better to help that task along than Robert Kennedy who is both Catholic priest and Zen Roshi. In this book Kennedy comments on the ten traditional Zen ox-herding pictures, an allegory of the search for the true self. He illustrates their meanings with koans and stories of the Zen masters, but even more extensively with a wealth of modern poetry and literature. This is a guide for the searcher more than a theology for the theorist. The gifts he has in mind are: commitment to practice, transcending our latest theologies in an attitude of unknowing, self-reliance, accepting impermanence and constant change, self-mastery that is really vibrant living, experiencing the absolute incarnated in the relative, the coorigination of all things, finding the absolute within, being transformed into it, and compassionate service to others. These are Zen gifts Kennedy explains and commends principally to those Christians drawn by temperament to Zen practice. But he writes in such a way that I think the book suitable for people of any and even of no particular faith, who yet feel some calling to the way of Zen. The book is written with elegance, grace, generosity and compassion. But if one pays too much attention to Kennedy's message, that compassion can be the compassion of ten firm strokes from the Roshi's keisaku (stick) that strike at our sloth, illusions, dependency, mediocrity, and self-centeredness. I recommend it highly.Zen Gifts to Christians Overview

The Spirituality of Imperfection: Storytelling and the Search for Meaning ReviewThis book is to spirituality as riding a rollercoaster is to physics. It is not a read; it is an experience. Kurtz and Ketcham have managed to tell their own story in such a way that the reader is invited to share in that experience.
Finding this spirituality of imperfection in Alcoholics Anonymous and the twelve-step program, K&K have scoured spiritual writings throughout history to find the words to describe their experience. Boldface quotes and stories color almost every page.
K&K find the essence of the spiritual in human imperfections and failure, in the inevitability of pain. Spirituality is not the evasion of consequences or errors, but rather learning how to live with them. They call trying to be perfect the most tragic human mistake. They are clear, spirituality is found in asking the right questions, not in finding the right answers.
Perhaps every reader of this book will not be able to hear it's music. Perhaps only those who have been wounded by life, need it. Perhaps only those who have drunk deeply of failure will find nourishment here. All I know is that I did, and to Kurtz and Ketcham I will always be grateful. The Spirituality of Imperfection: Storytelling and the Search for Meaning Overview

The Psychedelic Experience: A Manual Based on the Tibetan Book of the Dead (Citadel Underground) ReviewI would like to clear up some apparent confusion in the reviews below:
Ram Dass' book "Be Here Now" *can't* be a prelude to this book, since "Be Here Now" was written I think seven years *after* "The Psychedelic Experience." For those of you who don't know, "Ram Dass" is in fact Richard Alpert, one of the three authors of "The Psychedelic Experience."
To say that this book "adds nothing to the already huge body of liturature written on the topic" is like saying that The Bible adds nothing to the already huge body of christian literature. This book was at it's time absolutely revolutionary. It is to my knowledge the first work published giving a detailed road map for those travellers seeking spiritual enlightenment with the aid of psychedelics.
The brilliant reinterpretation of the Bardo Thodol as a guide for premortem ego death and the interpretation of numerous aspects of eastern mysticism in general in the light of Leary's "Game of Life" theory (e.g. "heavy world game playing" interpretations of "karma") makes the meaning of these ancient mystic teachings readily accessible to the mind of the western psychonaut.
If you're a psychonaut and want to better understand your experiences, read this book. If everybody who wanted to try a psychoactive substance would first read this book, there would probably never again be anybody who would have what s/he would call a "horror trip" (unless the heavy game players don't understand what they're reading and insist on taking the substances anyway.)
Read it and weep.
Wishing you Good Journeys,
