Glory Invasion: Walking Under An Open Heaven ReviewI am totally amazed at the revelation that God is pouring out on mankind in these last days. It is as if God has heard the cry of mankind and is answering it and using anointed authors to share it with us. Some of the books that I have been privileged to read and review have caused me to grow with leaps and bounds in my Spiritual walk, and I am thankful. This new book by author David Herzog , Glory Invasion, joins the ranks in my opinion, as one of the most encouraging, exciting, and spirit-charged books that I have read. The revelation that he brings to the table I can only call life-changing. There have been several times lately, in certain books that I have read, where I actually feel the excitement of the Spirit of God inside of me as I digest the revelation that I am receiving, this was one of those times. I found myself reading several pages and actually putting the book down so I could meditate on the wonder of the words that I had just read. As a Christian, nothing is more important than following where God is leading, and being in the depths of the flowing waters of His Spirit; David shares where God is going and how to follow and be one with Him and His Glory. Outstanding!
In this work you will understand how creative miracles happen, how to receive supernatural provision and help in awakening your prophetic destiny from its sleep. You will realize God has something wonderful for you to do and through the words of this book, your spirit will have the encouragement to run to complete the race set before you, and you will see and understand that indeed there is more, much more, awaiting you as a Christian. And you will deeply understand, we do serve a 'Mighty God,' who is indeed more than enough to defeat lack, sickness and all the other obstacles that have darkened your door. How exciting is that?
It's time to rejoice, and fill your mind and spirit with words that will make a difference and change your life. You will find those words in this anointed book; I would never attempt to try and explain in such a short review the deep revelation you will receive, but believe me, they are there. I highly recommend Glory Invasion to you. It's time to go to the next level of His Glory and this book will help you make the climb. Thank you David for sharing this revelation with us; God's hand is truly upon you.

Power Of The Blood ReviewThe extreme significance and substance of this book far exceeds the mere 92 pages of it's contents. I find it difficult in words alone to stress the importance of this book.
The essential message of the Gospel is provided here through the fundamental basis of Salvation being the shed Blood of Jesus Christ as a covering/atonement & propitiation for the sin of mankind.
Jesus Christ is clearly revealed in this book as the Saviour, the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world through the shedding of His precious Blood. The absolute magnitude and priceless nature of Jesus' Blood pertaining to Salvation is presented through an abundance of Scriptural references and examples from both the Old & New Testament, which are discussed in some depth.
The writer, through a meticulous presentation, shows the emphasis and necessity of the provision of blood serving as an atonement for sin in Old Testament times ("It is the blood that makes an atonement for the soul" - Leviticus 17;12) and also in the New Testament ("Without the shedding of blood there is no remission of sins." - Hebrews 9;22).
The writer describes how Jesus Christ, the Son of God, was crucified at the time of the Feast of Passover, the very time that the Jewish people kept to remember the historic occasion of their Exodus from slavery when God declared "When I see the blood I will pass over you" (Exodus 12;33).
At the very time that the Jewish people were celebrating the first Exodus, the writer shows that Jesus was making atonement for the 'second Exodus', to all who would believe in his sacrifice and the efficacy of the shedding of His precious Blood on the cross as an Exodus from sin and the penalty of sin.
The book does a far better job of describing this than I can in a short review. The book also proceeds to describe God's provision for health, protection , coping with life's difficulties & even Spiritual warfare through this very subject. This really is an excellent read which I cannot recommend highly enough.Power Of The Blood Overview

Jonathan Edwards on Heaven and Hell (The Essential Edwards Collection) ReviewThe subject of eternal destiny is a hot topic. It seems everyone has an opinion about everyone else's opinion. Navigating the terrain of publishing and ideas can be confusing. Sometimes it helps to have someone who stands head and shoulders above the rest speaking intelligently about the subject.
Owen Strachan and Doug Sweeney have, again, provided a helpful treatment of Jonathan Edwards and his theology. The second title reviewed here in The Essential Edwards Collection published by Moody Press deals with the subject of Heaven and Hell. I have thoroughly enjoyed the books in this series. Strachan and Sweeney have given us a helpful tour through Jonathan Edwards' thought.
Not surprisingly, Edwards maintains the traditional view of Heaven and Hell. Yet, Edwards does not hold to Hell joyfully. He views Hell as a sad truth. That sad truth motivates him to speak of Hell and redemption in Christ in order that some may escape the flames of Hell through a heart set aflame towards love of Christ and transformation by his grace.
Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from Moody Press. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. Secrets of the Vine for Women: Breaking Through to Abundance (Breakthrough Series) ReviewI have to admit, when the original Secrets of the Vine book came out, I did NOT jump on the bandwagon and buy or read it. However, eventually I did get around to reading it and it was good. When I saw there was a Secrets book for women, well, I decided to give it a go. I am now glad I did. It was excellent (and a fast read). It was so good, in fact, that I ended up ordering a copy for each of the women on the women's ministry team at my church, for a Christmas gift. Made for an inexpensive but very thought provoking gift, which I hope they will get as much from it as I did. I felt it very relevant for my own life, as well as for our ministry for the women of our church. I think one of the best things I read in the book was about Mary and Martha. One line in particular caught my attention: "Mary had chosen to be with Him, and that was better than doing for Him." The whole point of this little line was that "most women struggle to get to the end of their to-do list each day. Spending time with God becomes just another activity on our list, when in fact it should be the paper on which we prioritize everything else we do!" Something else I noted... "You're too busy not to abide!" Talk about truth!!Secrets of the Vine for Women: Breaking Through to Abundance (Breakthrough Series) Overview

The Blackwell Companion to Christian Ethics (Wiley-Blackwell Companions to Religion) ReviewThere simply is no other book like this on the market. In terms of Christian ethics, the editors require us to see that our worship, the manner in which we are liturgically formed, produces the kind of people we are. They begin with a few chapters explaining how Christian ethics came into being, and how they are determined by our worship practices. What follows are creative/provocative essays that span a wide range of issues including: gender, war, abortion, money, marriage, euthanasia, sex, arts, politics, and the environment. What renders this such an incredible book is how the authors explore what the eucharist, baptism, hymn-singing, footwashing, passing the peace, prayer, and other Christian practices have to do with the aforementioned issues. If you are interested in Christian ethics, and you want to read an accessible book from reputable sources, then you can do no better than this book. The Blackwell Companion to Christian Ethics (Wiley-Blackwell Companions to Religion) Overview

The Vision A Two-in-one Volume Of The Final Quest And The Call ReviewThis is a great book on what is happening in Heaven, with angels, with Christians in Heaven, and with the Redeemed on earth, and with God Himself. Rick Joyner's vision, whether real or analogy, will help you find hope and understanding about what God is doing "behind the scenes" and where the Church on earth is(spiritually speaking). You'll gain insights into the effects of sin in your own life on yourself, others, and your eternal rewards; and you'll have a greater desire to please and serve God more. So many times I had to put the book down and either worship God for His greatness, or to fall prostrate in repentance for hidden sin in my life that this book made me aware of. I have a personal library of (literally) thousands of Christian books and, outside of the Bible, this book is one of two that has changed my spiritual life the most. The other book is The Heavens Opened by Anna Rountree. The Vision A Two-in-one Volume Of The Final Quest And The Call Overview

Jesus Today: A Spirituality of Radical Freedom ReviewAlbert Nolan was born in 1934 in Cape Town a 4th generation South African who rose to international acclaim with the publication of his first book, Jesus Before Christianity, was recently reissued on its 25th anniversary. Jesus Before Christ, translated into nine languages, was described by theologian Harvey Cox as "the most accurate and balanced short reconstruction of the life of the historical Jesus."
In 2003, the South African government awarded him the Order of Luthuli in recognition of "his lifelong dedication to the struggle for democracy, human rights and justice and for challenging the religious dogma including theological justification of apartheid." The award is named after Chief Albert Luthuli, South Africa's first Nobel Peace Prize winner.
In this long-awaited sequel, Nolan describes the modern signs that underlay our spiritual hunger: the crisis of individualism, ecological breakdowns, the global divide between rich and poor, our unprecedented skepticism and a disconnect with our past and our failing efforts to reconnect through fundamentalism and Neo-conservatism.
Besides spiritual hunger we face the crisis of individualism that is ending up in a cultist worship of the ego and the erosion of community. People have fewer friends than they did 20 years ago and this rising disconnect can be seen in the growing prevalence of anger and anxiety. The hunger for spirituality is a hunger for freedom from materials, self-indulgence, postmodernism, oppression, and individualism. It is a freedom from self-sufficiency, independence, and separation that have brought us to the edge of chaos.
When Nolan discusses the contributions of a new science beginning with Einstein a new and more hopeful world paradigm emerges: science as an ally with faith in the discovery of new mysteries of the universe: "Light, for example, is neither a wave nor a particle: it is something beyond our mind and imagination . . . it is a mystery." (P. 36). The world is filled with puzzles yet unsolved and possibly never solved like how the writing out of a tiny strand of DNA instructions would fill a thousand books each 600 pages long or Niels Bohr's quantum leap where particles in orbit may jump from one orbit to another without passing through the space between them--another mystery.
His reflections on mysticism's essentially incommunicable insights into God and reality are particularly good. Christian mystical writing form two paths: Apophatic (Via Negativa) and Kataphatic (Via Positiva). Nolan presents Apophatic mysticism without over complicating it with too much information. Christianity was, after all, a mystical sect that grew out of Judaism as Gnosticism grew out of Christianity. In the Apophatic tradition we can know only what God is not. God is not an object that can be compared to other objects, nor is God a mystery, one mystery among others, but the mystery. This is the language of paradox that, like a Zen kaon, puts into words what cannot be described but must be experienced as Moses experienced a hidden God in the burning bush.
Nolan proceeds to describe the elements of Jesus' spirituality: a way of healing that combines prophecy and mysticism with profound love. And love itself is a mystery since, if one is allowed one descriptor of God, it is Love, a term that belies a galaxy of words but is understood instantly in its experience:
"The way my mother loved was a mighty force. And she loved me so much sometimes it scared me. I knew by the way her eyes were almost backlit with affection when she saw me coming up the stairs and the way her voice was raised an octave when she heard my voice on the other end of a call to her. There was nothing she would not have done for me all my life."
-- Dorothea Benton Frank, The Land of Mango Sunsets.

The Visions of the Children: The Apparitions of the Blessed Mother at Medjugorje: All the Messages of the Blessed Mother and the Latest Unfolding of God's Plan for the Human Race from Medjugorge ReviewI really can't recommend this book enough for anyone interested in the Blessed Virgin, in Marian Apparitions, or in Medjugorje. If you are interested in all three, I'd consider this book a must-have. The woman who wrote the book interviewed not only all of the visionaries (the ones who see the Blessed Virgin Mary and have since 1981 !) but also the two child 'locutionaries' as well. Each chapter of interviews speaks of how it began for each person and 'where they are today' as far as which ones still receive a daily apparition and which have a yearly one now, and who has all ten secrets and who is yet to receive all ten (now, most have ten and some have nine). It explains the phenomena of Medjugorje very well. There are also photographs to go along with all the book talks about. I did not know there were child locutionaries (they hear the BVM talking to them, and I believe this because for one thing, the things those two children say are amazingly wise beyond their years) until I read this book.
The interviewer asks spiritual questions of each subject and the answers will have your mouth dropping open. I can't seem to hold onto this book; every once in a while I will buy a new copy, only to give it away again to someone I feel will be amazed by it too -- and they are. The interview subjects discuss heaven, hell, purgatory, God's peace, the visions, etc.etc. It's an amazing book, and will leave you feeling very good after reading it. I found it inspiring. [....] Right now it's my favorite book about Medjugorje. The Visions of the Children: The Apparitions of the Blessed Mother at Medjugorje: All the Messages of the Blessed Mother and the Latest Unfolding of God's Plan for the Human Race from Medjugorge Overview

The Art of Curating Worship: Reshaping the Role of Worship Leader Review2010 has been a Sparkhouse year. Sparkhouse is an imprint of Augsburg Fortress, and this past year they have published some stellar resources, including my personal favorite, re:form, a confirmation curriculum (they also published a great VBS we used this summer, re:new, and a book on Church in the Inventive Age by Doug Pagitt). I actually think the re:form confirmation curriculum is the best confirmation curriculum I've seen, ever!
When I learned they were also working on a new resource for worship planning (Clayfire), I was thrilled, and immediately ordered the book that I think is launching the series, Mark Pierson's The Art of Curating Worship.
All of this is by way of saying that I was predisposed to be sympathetic to the book, and open to the ideas in it. I'm honestly a fan of resources published by Augsburg Fortress, and a supporter of the innovative directions Sparkhouse is taking as a publishing arm of our church.
So then I actually started reading the book. Here's where I started hitting some major speed-bumps. I am still excited about Pierson's re-thinking worship leadership as worship curation, because it bring greater focus to the environment and space in which worship takes place than other traditional titles such as cantor, preacher, presider, or worship leader. Cantors focus more on the music, preachers on the word, presiders on space but focused on the meal, and worship leaders also typically focus on the content of prayers and music.
The term curator is preferable for a variety of reasons, itemized well in Pierson's book, but I especially like the term because it draws attention to the overall environment, and also has analogies with how curation is done in museums, etc, where the goal is to bring to life that which has gone before.
All of this being said, I realized that as soon as I read two things in the book that really caused me to struggle, I wouldn't be able to read the book with an open heart and mind. Pierson shares in the second chapter of his book that one worship event he curated included communion, but he chose to use water instead of wine for the communion. Is it too finicky of me, or too legalistic, to argue that you simply don't do this, period, anywhere. Communion is bread and wine. To depart from bread and wine is simply not acceptable.
This pointed me back to something he had said earlier that I initially thought was a bit of hyperbole, but now I think it wasn't. Page 25, he says, "Anything goes." Of course, he precedes this by arguing that once we get our definition of church and worship clear, then how we actually design worship, embedded in those answers, can be "anything goes," but it is simply not clear to me how that works.
Here's my concern. T'his book is the first book on worship from a new publishing arm of the Lutheran church, and one of the first if only comments in the book on the sacraments suggests that wine may be replaced with water in the meal.
Now I know that Pierson is a Baptist from New Zealand. We probably have very different approaches to the meal. I also see from what he is up to that he is very creative and experimental in his worship leadership. He creates events, art installations, etc. They seem amazing, and I'd like to see such a worship event in action.
That being said, I just don't see how the book will ultimately be helpful for our worship leaders. This is more than simply thinking outside the box. It's like having left the room and apartment building altogether.
I'm going to continue reading the book, and will post a second reflection upon finishing it, but it does occur to me that we need someone to write a book on worship curation who also reads and adheres to the Lutheran confessions and the Use of the Means of Grace document, among other guiding texts of our tradition.
They say all press is good press, so I hope you'll go out and buy the book and read it. Even if I strongly disagree with parts of it, and disagree even more strongly with the decision that Sparkhouse should be the one to publish it, I do intend to always be in dialogue perhaps especially with those with whom I disagree. The true way to stay immature is to live in an echo-chamber of your own creation. The Art of Curating Worship: Reshaping the Role of Worship Leader Overview

Great Christian Thinkers: From the Early Church Through the Middle Ages ReviewJesus said, "If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them" (Luke 6.32). He then goes on to tell his followers to do good to evildoers. It is hard to see things with new eyes and respond out of new hearts. By doing good to the wicked, the faithful begin to see evil as an opportunity to love. That which was once considered your enemy enables you to reflect the Savior.
In a way, that's why I choose to read this book. As a decidedly Reformed and Baptist Christian, it may seem an oxymoron to read anything by a Catholic (especially the Pope!) for a reason other than providing fodder for critique. Yet, I have become concerned by the myopia of many within my circles and have decided to not be that way. I have much to learn from brothers in every area of Christendom. Granted, there may be much disagreement. Disagreement provides an opportunity to develop discernment - a rare commodity among people today.
Pope Benedict XVI first provided these seventy sketches are part of addresses given in Saint Peter's Square. He introduces readers to important believers from the earliest days of the church (Clement) to Julian of Norwich in the mid-to-late 14th century. Each entry is short, accessible and provides a distinctively Catholic view of these ancient saints.
Benedict also includes short personal reflection in each study. This is a great addition, I think. History is often devoid of reflection. It is a disconnected past full of strange people who dressed weird. Instead, history is living and it calls like to us like lady wisdom (Prov 8) to learn from their folly and success. It is appropriate (I would even say necessary) for Christians to study history and reflect personally on the events, people and ideas which have come down to us. Hebrews 13.7 says,
Remember your leaders, those who spoke to you the word of God. Consider the outcome of their way of life, and imitate their faith.
Works such as this provide us with the opportunity and model of considering the outcome of the lives of these men and women and imitating their faith.
There are certainly things which Benedict promotes which I disagree. Pilgrimages and prayers to these saints do not confer upon me grace. Grace comes through and from Christ. He is the mediator, not deceased saints of God. But, like I said, texts such as these provide an exercise in discernment. There is much to learn here, even if I disagree with some things.
NOTE: In accordance with the regulations of the Federal Trade Commission I would like to state that I received a complementary copy of the aforementioned text for the purposes of review. Faith Path Workbook: Helping Friends Find Their Way to Christ ReviewFaith Path - Helping Friends Find Their Way to Christ by author Mark Mittelberg is a wonderful addition for a small group bible study.Based on Mittleberg's Choosing Your Faith, the Faith Path workbook and DVD build on his approach to relational evangelism.Unfortunately, Choosing Your Faith was not a book I had in my library (although that is soon to be remedied) and at times it made it difficult to review this study because it kept referring back to the other book. That being said, from what I could grasp I liked. The DVD was exceptional and I often wished that I had a group of people doing the study with me while I was reviewing it, just to be able to talk about the topics further. Here is the premise of the study taken from the back cover:Faith, everybody lives by it - even skeptics and atheists! That's right. Everyone you know trusts something they believe in but can't prove or know absolutely. They take it on faith. And if you want to talk to your friends about your faith, it helps to understand what they believe and how they got there. You will meet six people who looked at the world in six different ways before they embraced faith in Christ. Through the workbook and DVD you will:
* Understand people who approach life differently from you
* Recognize the danger of paths that lead away from Christ
* Deepen your own faith in Christ and reinforce your reasons for believing
* Gain confidence in talking about Christ with othersRelativists, traditionalists, mystics, authoritarians, and others - they're all here in this book. And after you understand how these people think about faith, you can help them find a trustworthy path to the truth.I am going to pass this on to my own library and recommend it to our Pastor for the cell groups at our church. Keep in mind that if you do go purchase this workbook and DVD, you will want Choosing your Faith as well. **Amazon is currently selling Choosing your Faith for .99 cents so if you are going to do this study, now is an excellent time to order them!**Faith Path Workbook: Helping Friends Find Their Way to Christ Overview

Practicing the Way of Jesus: Life Together in the Kingdom of Love ReviewI have a friend-- now an earnest Christian-- who occasionally tells the story of his spiritual journey. Though he was born into Christianity, he wasn't very involved in church while he was growing up. In college, he engaged an exhaustive investigation of world religions, after which he joined a group of Tibetan Buddhists in his town. After several years, he came to a point of personal crisis in his life where he was not involved in Buddhism and did no meditation at all for over one year. At which point he declared that he was no longer Buddhist, because he wasn't practicing. And, as he says, a Buddhist who is not a practicing Buddhist is not a Buddhist at all.
I remind myself of this story frequently, because it reminds me of something obvious that I nevertheless missed for most of my life: Christianity is a set of practices. Like the other Eastern religions of the time, Jesus intended to lead people into a life that put into practice his teachings. He called people to `follow' him, even more in his deeds than in his words. He promised salvation not to those who gave ascent to his teachings, but to those who did what he said. In my years of pondering this, I've come to wish we possessed a term like `practicing Christian' to underscore the importance of this oft-ignored truth.
Mark Scandrette's new book Practicing the Way of Jesus put this issue front-and-center for me. In both his words and in the actions that he describes, Mark is a person who puts Jesus` teachings into practice. And in so doing, he sidesteps many of the trappings of the folk-religion that passes as Christianity, and many of the theological debates that inoculate us against the power for life transformation that Jesus offers. This book posits Jesus as more about ethics and worldview than theology and doctrine. It claims that Jesus was living in a way, rather than just reciting teaching. And that when he was teaching, Jesus was teaching things that were meant to be performed, rather than memorized or displayed in cross-stitch. It shows Jesus as a sage whose followers were doing just that-- following him, in word and in action.Practicing the Way of Jesus: Life Together in the Kingdom of Love Overview

The Purpose-Driven Life Journal ReviewIf you're a fan of the "Purpose Driven Life" series OR are simply searching for a good Christian journal to put your thoughts down and stimulate your spiritual thinking, consider this book. A few of the things I liked about it:
-there's plenty of space for writing down your thoughts
-inspiring passages on most pages
-decent questions to ponder
I guess you could consider this as a kind of "workbook" too- not simply a place to jot down what's on your mind as the questions point you to specific areas. A decent little journal, I doubt most will be disappointed. Also recommend Finding Happiness in a Frustrating World to help get one's life goals on track. The Purpose-Driven Life Journal Overview

Inspired By...The Bible Experience: Companion Bible ReviewI purchased this as a gift to accompany the cds. I have given this to two people and they both have thanked me several times. It makes the Bible Experience an even better experience. I just ordered it for myself but before I gave it to the second person I had a chance to use it and I almost did not want to give it as a gift but I did and I quickly ordered one for myself. I also use this with my children and we listen to the cds and they read along. I would highly recommend.Inspired By...The Bible Experience: Companion Bible Overview

Ethnic Blends: Mixing Diversity into Your Local Church (Leadership Network Innovation Series) ReviewMy how we could have used this book ten years ago when our church (Willow Creek Community Church in South Barrington, IL) first decided to cross the racial divide in hopes of becoming multi-ethnic! Our results were recently described in a January, 2010 Time Magazine article that shows both how far Willow has come, and how far it still has to go.
It's interesting that both these authors and our pastor (Bill Hybels) were inspired by Michael Emerson's depressing book "Divided by Faith." For those who haven't read it yet, it describes lasting multi-ethnic churches as sociologically impossible. Yet, as I once responded to Dr. Emerson in a meeting, it HAS to be possible for Christians, because the Bible commands it. This book is the story of HOW it has been possible with God's help, not only for Mosaic Church of Central Arkansas, but also for several other cited examples to become truly multi-ethnic (defined as no more than 80% from any one ethnicity.)
A key insight of this book is: however well the homogeneous unit principle of church growth worked in the twentieth century, only multi-ethnic churches can achieve lasting growth in the twenty-first. One reason is that the U.S. is becoming more diverse. Twenty-five percent of the people living near Willow's suburban campuses no longer look like the people who founded Willow. Any church that today only appeals to only one ethnicity, thereby shrinks its market, especially as the U.S. moves toward becoming majority-minority by 2042. Second, and more importantly, people who are considering the message of the church today can't avoid wondering why it can't be at least as diverse as their workplace. As this book put it "For in an increasingly diverse and cynical society, people will no longer find credible the message of God's love for all people when it's preached by segregated churches."
Another key insight: "it is the [multi-ethnic] church at Antioch, and not the [homogeneous] church in Jerusalem, that is the most influential church of the entire New Testament." and "it wasn't until the church at Jerusalem was persecuted that individuals were forced to carry the message of Christ to other lands and people."
The book lists seven core commitments of a multi-ethnic church: embrace dependence, intentional steps, diverse leaders, cross-cultural relationships and competence, inclusion and mobilizing for impact.
Thankfully, this book then gets into actual cases, such as tongues, women in ministry, politics, the undocumented, worship music, wine versus grape juice, choosing leaders, and resolving conflicts. It also presents various models of how multi-ethnic churches function, listing strengths and weaknesses of each approach. For instance, Willow now has a popular weekly service in Spanish, good for attracting Hispanics. However, the resulting challenge is how to ensure Willow remains united, not two congregations sharing a building.
I found the transitions between the two authors a bit hard to track, and still wonder about the ethnicity of Deymaz. Those primarily concerned about bridging the specific divide between black and white may want an additional book, such as the book "Letters Across the Divide" that helped Willow start its "Justice Journey."
Overall, for churches interested in actually becoming multi-ethnic, this is your "how to" guide.Ethnic Blends: Mixing Diversity into Your Local Church (Leadership Network Innovation Series) Overview

Baptize By Blazing Fire: Divine Expose of Heaven and Hell ReviewI've applied some of the strategies the Lord Jesus showed in the book and I've been able to overcome temptations of sins and difficult personal situations at home, work and church much more effectively. Spiritual power truly becomes much stronger when I pray kneeling down with both hands raised up and pouring my heart out in a loud voice of crying out. Yes. This requires concentration of the will, determination and strength but if you just take the first step and ask God to help you to pray in such a way even if you really don't feel like to God does help you if you persist.
I have only just begun to pray like this and have much more to learn but the reward is already amazing! You really have to experience it because I think we all need to. I particularly like to pray to have my heart filled with the fear of the Lord and His love because to me that really is the only way to not sin and work my salvation in trembling and fear. The torment of hell described in the book is so horrifying that it's been very helpful in giving up (and be free from the sufferings of) all the worldly pleasures and staying away from backsliding. The reward of heaven mentioned is so good that it gives me a great joy to press on to seek His kingdom and its righteousness.Baptize By Blazing Fire: Divine Expose of Heaven and Hell Overview

Seeing the Unseen: Cultivate a Faith that Unveils the Hidden Presence of God Review"God is constantly speaking to all of His children, and we all need to be aware of the supernatural, which is always present, whether we are at our desk, in the kitchen, or driving down the road." (pg. 10)
If you are going to read at least one book this summer (other than the Bible of course), then you need to read Seeing The Unseen by Dr. T.W. Hunt. Nothing will shake you more, challenge you more, or open your eyes to more potential in your Christian walk. I read it in about two to three days, but this is just my first reading. It will DEFINITELY demand more than just that. Now I plan to take it little bit by little bit and apply the truths more. Don't just read this by yourself. Find someone to join with you on this journey.
The premise of the book alone is challenging. Our natural physical laws tell us that everything is loosing energy and "winding down." Yet, in the spiritual world we are encouraged to become sanctified - to be more like Christ. This is entropy (physical world) vs. entelechy (spiritual world). This is difficult to learn, but must be learned if we want to see fulfilled lives and prayers answered. Dr. Hunt explains, "All of the upward movement or growth is fulfilled in the spiritual realm, the unseen reality, which we cannot perceive with our physical eyes (pg. 13)." So, Dr. Hunt spends the rest of the book explaining how we can have this biblical faith which unlocks our ability to have a deeper faith: to see God at work in the spiritual world, to hear God's voice in the spiritual world, and point out the factors that keep us from seeing and hearing.
For many years now, outside of my family, Dr. Hunt has been the greatest influence of my life. He is not just an author, but a man who humbly walks with God like no one I know. This book is now in my top five most influential books of all time. I rank it up there with The Pursuit of God by A.W. Tozer as my top two favorite books of all time right now. I read Dr. Hunt's The Mind of Christ and thought it was one of the most amazing books. Then he released From Heaven's View with his daughter Melana. I thought that was one of the most amazing books I have ever read. Now, Seeing The Unseen comes along and completely blows me away, humbling me, challenging me to pursue faith and sanctification like never before. No one has asked or paid me to say this, but PLEASE consider buying this book and reading it (in fact, read the other two mentioned!). You will not be disappointed.Seeing the Unseen: Cultivate a Faith that Unveils the Hidden Presence of God Overview

Things Hidden: Scripture As Spirituality ReviewToward the end of his marvelous Things Hidden, Richard Rohr tells an equally marvelous story. Parents bring home a newly-born baby. Their 4-year-old daughter insists on speaking to her new sibling--alone, she insists. The amused parents leave, but stand at the doorway for easy eavesdropping. Their daughter gets close to the infant and urgently whispers: "Quick! Tell me where we came from and why we're here. I'm beginning to forget!"
This little parable is a nice encapsulation of what Rohr has to say about the spirit of scripture. For Rohr, following Rene Girard (whose influence, along with Nouwen's, is all over this book), the bible is a "text in travail," a fluid, living document that is often times messy and meandering, taking one step forward and two steps back. That's why it's important, insists Rohr, to be clear about the bible's trajectory and momentum, so that we won't get lost down a sidetrack and take the inessential as vital (the fundamentalist failing). The trajectory is the working out of the human recognition of God as a loving, nurturing parent who exhibits mercy, grace, faithfulness, forgiveness, and steadfast love; of recognition of ourselves as originally blessed, made in the image of a loving God and hence intrinsically lovable ourselves; and recognition that the bible encourages awakening, remembering, rather than accomplishing. (It's fascinating to reflect on the fact that the Greek word for truth used in the New Testament--aletheia--can be translated as "unforgetting.")
Readers familiar with Rohr's work won't necessarily find a great deal to surprise them in this lovely and wise book. But readers new to Rohr, as well as those (like myself) who have read and profited from him for years, will appreciate the insight and grace with which he puts scripture in a context that moves away from uninspired literalism on the one hand or academic textual crunching on the other. If spiritual knowing (cognition) is really, as Rohr argues, a re-cognition, an unforgetting of the soul, this book is as good a memory-jogger as one is likely to find.Things Hidden: Scripture As Spirituality Overview
