The Church of Facebook: How the Hyperconnected Are Redefining Community ReviewI heard about Jesse Rice's book, "The Church of Facebook: How the Wireless Generation is Redefining Community" from an interview he did on a podcast. The topic of online community and whether or not it can be authentic is of interest to me.
I wasn't sure what to expect; perhaps a Christianized critique of the whole social networking phenomenon complete with a set of warnings for believers and suggested rules for underage children. Thankfully this is not Jesse's book. Instead it opens with a fascinating story of the opening day on the Millennium Bridge crossing the Thames River in London. The unexpected shaking that day on the pedestrian footbridge is similar to the online spectacle of Facebook and other social networking sites. Jesse uses this and several other stories at the beginning of each chapter to create a historical framework for interpreting our online interactions. Jesse has done his research well and the book is very interesting because of it.
The science of connecting with others, of creating a "home" where we feel safe is the subject of chapter one. This is followed by a chapter on revolutionary changes to society and how Facebook is set up to be, if it not already is, a world changer. Chapter three delves into the controls people have of their online presence, of the information they choose to share online with others on their profiles. He poses the question of what we will do with the power we have to create, to shape society, with our online influence. Chapter four studies the impact that all of the new information has on an individual, understanding that people have adapted their behavior with this new way to connect with people, share information and collect new data. The fifth chapter focuses on the question of community and whether or not it can be experienced online. Are our relational needs truly being met? The final chapter speaks to implications of using social networking and some of the inherent behaviors that could be attributed to living life via an online presence. Jesse suggests some boundaries to keep the experience healthy, balanced and authentic.
Although the book could be categorized as a Christian book by a Christian author, it doesn't come across as preachy or fear-based. As such I hope it will be picked up by readers interested in modern communication, community development, sociology, and human psychology. It broadened my perspectives of social networking and has stayed with me as I've continued connecting with old and new friends online. The Church of Facebook: How the Hyperconnected Are Redefining Community Overview

Jesus Today: A Spirituality of Radical Freedom ReviewAlbert Nolan was born in 1934 in Cape Town a 4th generation South African who rose to international acclaim with the publication of his first book, Jesus Before Christianity, was recently reissued on its 25th anniversary. Jesus Before Christ, translated into nine languages, was described by theologian Harvey Cox as "the most accurate and balanced short reconstruction of the life of the historical Jesus."
In 2003, the South African government awarded him the Order of Luthuli in recognition of "his lifelong dedication to the struggle for democracy, human rights and justice and for challenging the religious dogma including theological justification of apartheid." The award is named after Chief Albert Luthuli, South Africa's first Nobel Peace Prize winner.
In this long-awaited sequel, Nolan describes the modern signs that underlay our spiritual hunger: the crisis of individualism, ecological breakdowns, the global divide between rich and poor, our unprecedented skepticism and a disconnect with our past and our failing efforts to reconnect through fundamentalism and Neo-conservatism.
Besides spiritual hunger we face the crisis of individualism that is ending up in a cultist worship of the ego and the erosion of community. People have fewer friends than they did 20 years ago and this rising disconnect can be seen in the growing prevalence of anger and anxiety. The hunger for spirituality is a hunger for freedom from materials, self-indulgence, postmodernism, oppression, and individualism. It is a freedom from self-sufficiency, independence, and separation that have brought us to the edge of chaos.
When Nolan discusses the contributions of a new science beginning with Einstein a new and more hopeful world paradigm emerges: science as an ally with faith in the discovery of new mysteries of the universe: "Light, for example, is neither a wave nor a particle: it is something beyond our mind and imagination . . . it is a mystery." (P. 36). The world is filled with puzzles yet unsolved and possibly never solved like how the writing out of a tiny strand of DNA instructions would fill a thousand books each 600 pages long or Niels Bohr's quantum leap where particles in orbit may jump from one orbit to another without passing through the space between them--another mystery.
His reflections on mysticism's essentially incommunicable insights into God and reality are particularly good. Christian mystical writing form two paths: Apophatic (Via Negativa) and Kataphatic (Via Positiva). Nolan presents Apophatic mysticism without over complicating it with too much information. Christianity was, after all, a mystical sect that grew out of Judaism as Gnosticism grew out of Christianity. In the Apophatic tradition we can know only what God is not. God is not an object that can be compared to other objects, nor is God a mystery, one mystery among others, but the mystery. This is the language of paradox that, like a Zen kaon, puts into words what cannot be described but must be experienced as Moses experienced a hidden God in the burning bush.
Nolan proceeds to describe the elements of Jesus' spirituality: a way of healing that combines prophecy and mysticism with profound love. And love itself is a mystery since, if one is allowed one descriptor of God, it is Love, a term that belies a galaxy of words but is understood instantly in its experience:
"The way my mother loved was a mighty force. And she loved me so much sometimes it scared me. I knew by the way her eyes were almost backlit with affection when she saw me coming up the stairs and the way her voice was raised an octave when she heard my voice on the other end of a call to her. There was nothing she would not have done for me all my life."
-- Dorothea Benton Frank, The Land of Mango Sunsets.

The Counterfeit Christian: Being Aware of the Enemy and Knowing Your True Purpose ReviewLuis Lopez knows the cost of receiving the anointing of God upon his life. Have you been betrayed, misrepresented, misunderstood, homeless, beat up, without a shower, abandoned by your father, gossiped about, falsely accused and jailed, and your parents becoming alcoholics and drug users? Then you will be ready for the anointing of God, after the price has been paid. Luis has gone through great suffering to find great anointing. Are you prepared for the same? Are we unwilling to suffer even though God suffered unspeakable pain for us? Luis admonishes us to run to God and not from God. Make a stand. Resist the enemy. Seek the Truth. Reflections for Ragamuffins: Daily Devotions from the Writings of Brennan Manning ReviewThe author, as a priest could not find God in church dogma. Having found God he encourages Christians to stop playing church and find God personally. I would highly recommend the book An Encounter With A Prophet to anyone who takes Manning seriously.Reflections for Ragamuffins: Daily Devotions from the Writings of Brennan Manning Overview

They Shall Expel Demons: What You Need to Know about Demons - Your Invisible Enemies ReviewAs a traditional, Southern Baptist pastor I had heard little teaching (even in three years of Baptist seminary) on the subject of demons. Like most evangelicals, I accepted by faith the scriptures on Christ casting out demons. However, I saw little relevance to the practice today. After all, I had been told often that it was only for the New Testament era. (I thought). This book was an eye-opener. It is Biblical, and conservative in its tone and teaching. It is also real. It highlights the active presence and purposes of demonic forces today, but most importantly, how the believer in Jesus Christ can deal with them in the authority of Christ. How I wish the evangelical world would take the presence and activity of demons seriously. Perhaps more will, through this book. They Shall Expel Demons: What You Need to Know about Demons - Your Invisible Enemies Overview

The Visions of the Children: The Apparitions of the Blessed Mother at Medjugorje: All the Messages of the Blessed Mother and the Latest Unfolding of God's Plan for the Human Race from Medjugorge ReviewI really can't recommend this book enough for anyone interested in the Blessed Virgin, in Marian Apparitions, or in Medjugorje. If you are interested in all three, I'd consider this book a must-have. The woman who wrote the book interviewed not only all of the visionaries (the ones who see the Blessed Virgin Mary and have since 1981 !) but also the two child 'locutionaries' as well. Each chapter of interviews speaks of how it began for each person and 'where they are today' as far as which ones still receive a daily apparition and which have a yearly one now, and who has all ten secrets and who is yet to receive all ten (now, most have ten and some have nine). It explains the phenomena of Medjugorje very well. There are also photographs to go along with all the book talks about. I did not know there were child locutionaries (they hear the BVM talking to them, and I believe this because for one thing, the things those two children say are amazingly wise beyond their years) until I read this book.
The interviewer asks spiritual questions of each subject and the answers will have your mouth dropping open. I can't seem to hold onto this book; every once in a while I will buy a new copy, only to give it away again to someone I feel will be amazed by it too -- and they are. The interview subjects discuss heaven, hell, purgatory, God's peace, the visions, etc.etc. It's an amazing book, and will leave you feeling very good after reading it. I found it inspiring. [....] Right now it's my favorite book about Medjugorje. The Visions of the Children: The Apparitions of the Blessed Mother at Medjugorje: All the Messages of the Blessed Mother and the Latest Unfolding of God's Plan for the Human Race from Medjugorge Overview

The Kingdom of the Occult ReviewThis is the standard pertaining to the information that the Christian must know about the occult. Walter Martin has compiled the information which was edited and published by his daughter, Jill Rische and Kurt Van Gordon. I am so thankful that this book has been published!
I became a Christian in the '80's amidst the 'satanic panic'. The devil is everywhere, so Geraldo Rivera would have us believe. And, the publishing houses had a heyday putting out books about 'babies being concieved in hell' and an individual who used to be a doctor telling a ficticious story (though sold as the truth), not to mention the once famous Christian comedian, who posed as a satanic High Priest. The sad thing is, that the church took what they were saying and believed it.
I came out of satanism and I thought that many Christians were simply making satan and his minions out to be way more powerful than they actually are. This was exactly what satan wanted. Christians believing a lie, or the ficticious work of 'authors' and publishing houses. No one checked out their stories to see if they were telling the truth. Lots of misinformation about satan, demons, the occult and spiritual warfare was the result.
This book clears it all up. Literally. This book reflects the depth that Dr. Martin gave us in his work The Kingdom the Cults, which is a classic on the subject. He tackles the topic(s) and lists resources in order for the reader to offer help for those in the occult. A must read! The Kingdom of the Occult Overview

Has Christianity Failed You ReviewChristian apologist Ravi Zacharias answers the call to those Christians who believe that Christianity has failed them with his characteristic spirit of humble grace. Christ followers, as well as those who are seeking to better understand the Christian faith and how it "works itself out" in our ever-shifting societal concept of faith, God and its pertinence to life on earth, will appreciate Zacharias's thoughtful and intellectual approach. Readers will certainly find much more than they might expect within the pages of this heavyweight text on a number of theological issues.
Zacharias opens the book by defining "Who Is Jesus?" from an Old Testament story-by-story unveiling of who God says He is. He very eloquently paints word pictures of who Jesus is by sharing numerous scripture references to Him as the Son of David, Son of Man, and Son of God and Savior. This full-bodied account of Jesus, as described throughout the Bible, offers readers the soundest basis for seeing Jesus Christ in accurate terminology.
The author also does a marvelous job sharing what it means to be a Christian; detailing points of tension concerning faith matters; looking at incoherence on the topic of pain squarely in the eye; unpacking the two phrases "purpose driven" and "reason driven"; and asking what differences prayer and Christianity make.
Particularly appealing to today's Christian (and skeptic) will be Zacharias's persuasive argument found in "Points of Tension," where he deftly handles the hot topic of suffering and pain versus the notion that a loving God would not permit (or cannot control) such evil to exist in His followers' lives (or even in the world at large). Zacharias is able to take this argument back to its most basic premise and helps readers look at pain from a different vantage point. He points out that Satan appealed to Jesus when he tempted Him within the hierarchy of the written word, upon the promises and power of God. The lie purports that "God makes everything comfortable for us is precisely the reason many have been unable to face the tensions they experience in living the Christian life." So "relativism is a slave to the moment" whereas "absolutes, which are true regardless of circumstances or popularity, make it possible for precommitted certainties to be the basis on which to interpret a specific moment or issues..."
Zacharias then shares with his readers three primary "needs" humans have and how individuals struggle to meet them (thus causing discomfort and pain): the struggle for security that goes far beyond the need for safety from violence; release or rescue from pain and suffering and brokenness; and sexual fulfillment that is either illegitimately or legitimately fulfilled. Very sympathetic to the power of these needs, he offers not only biblical answers, but also real hope and promise for living through these tensions successfully.
Zacharias's weekly radio program, "Let My People Think," aptly describes the man, his work and his message. HAS CHRISTIANITY FAILED YOU? is surely a thinking man or woman's text, which means it is important for every Christian to read.

Your Gift of Grace ReviewThis book is a reminder that God's grace is new every morning. I read a poem every day along with my Bible. I love that there's an empty page to write whatever God puts on my heart for that day. The poems are uplifting and inspiring. They are just what I need to start my day, walking in God's grace. I recommend it to everyone!
