Eat the Cookie...Buy the Shoes: Giving Yourself Permission to Lighten Up ReviewJoyce Meyer's new book 'Eat the Cookie ... buy the Shoes' has a really simple theme: celebrate. Meyer takes on a subject that many Christians and even people in general have a hard time grasping in their lives - celebrate your accomplishments, life and the little things and stop sulking, moping, dwelling on past mistakes. Through the course of the book, Meyer explores all of the occasions a person should have reason or cause to celebrate. She also relates passages from the Bible to back-up her theory that Christians are supposed to celebrate and be happy; it's not just right but a mandate by God. It's not exactly a new, groundbreaking theory but it's an interesting read and something you don't hear or read many Christian authorities and authors writing on.
The Good: Even as a male, I found the topic refreshing. Too often in books written for the 'good and obedient Christian', we're lectured on how we're not doing right by God and how we're flawed and need to repent and will never get over the sins we've committed. Well, Meyer takes on this subject and turns it on its head. This is a very light, happy, celebratory piece of literature. She lectures the Christian but not in the manner of telling him/her that they have been bad and there's no way to recover, but to lecture them by saying 'lighten up!' She encourages us to party, to treat and indulge ourselves within reason, to take vacations and time off, to set goals and to figure out how we can improve our lives. It was refreshing and uplifting to hear such an authority in Christian faith like Joyce Meyer saying it's okay to take time out to celebrate, to have fun, enjoy life and that by doing so you may actually become a better Christian. The text is full of helpful tips on getting more enjoyment out of life and everyday living.
The Bad: My overall complaint is that while the subject is really so simple that for most of the book, I felt the introductory chapter did a good enough job of summing up the main message. The other chapters, will enjoyable, felt as if they were a bit unnecessary and elaborated on points already made. It felt as if Meyer spent more time trying to figure out how to re-phrase the same thing in each chapter, giving the book a bit of a repetitive, monotonous vibe. The first and last chapters gives the reader the message in a clear and concise way. The middle chapters elaborate over and over the points made in the intro and final chapter.
In all, a good book even though the subject matter is nothing new and is simple enough where it felt as if the author was stretching out certain themes and chapters due to it.Eat the Cookie...Buy the Shoes: Giving Yourself Permission to Lighten Up Overview

The Vision A Two-in-one Volume Of The Final Quest And The Call ReviewThis is a great book on what is happening in Heaven, with angels, with Christians in Heaven, and with the Redeemed on earth, and with God Himself. Rick Joyner's vision, whether real or analogy, will help you find hope and understanding about what God is doing "behind the scenes" and where the Church on earth is(spiritually speaking). You'll gain insights into the effects of sin in your own life on yourself, others, and your eternal rewards; and you'll have a greater desire to please and serve God more. So many times I had to put the book down and either worship God for His greatness, or to fall prostrate in repentance for hidden sin in my life that this book made me aware of. I have a personal library of (literally) thousands of Christian books and, outside of the Bible, this book is one of two that has changed my spiritual life the most. The other book is The Heavens Opened by Anna Rountree. The Vision A Two-in-one Volume Of The Final Quest And The Call Overview

Soul to Soul Parenting: A Guide to Raising a Spiritually Conscious Family ReviewBased on the other reviews, it's clear this book has many fans already (of which I am now one), so I'll try and provide some additional detail about the book that may help you decide if it's right for you and your family.
The main audience for this book is parents who consider themselves spiritual, but are not necessarily religiously affiliated. However, because the book is organized around general spiritual themes that are valued in many religions, I feel there is also a lot of material here that any parent could draw from, including religiously affiliated ones (and atheist/agnostic parents as well, for that matter.) The key is selecting approaches that work for you and your family, and the author stresses this continually - that a spiritually conscious family doesn't look one way or talk one way.
The book is organized around two main sections - Vehicles and Themes. The Vehicles are ideas for places, times and ways to integrate spiritual themes into your daily life as a family. Examples are family discussions, family rituals, vision boards, role play, art projects, or, my personal favorite 'make-her-day moments'. Some are formal and some are more casual. The Themes are values or topics that you can explore with your family, such as connectedness, authenticity, gratitude, cause/effect/free Will, mindfulness and more.
The vehicles and themes provide a framework for you to consider how best to integrate spirituality into your family life. I lean more towards a very unstructured approach - modeling being front and center - and I also have read a lot of 'mindful parenting' type books, so I initially wasn't sure how much I would get out of this one. But I found this really gave me a lot of new ideas, and inspired me to become more conscious in the way I am integrating spirituality into our lives, especially as my children grow older.
One of the things I especially appreciated was the book, movie and music suggestions, corresponding to each theme for both children and adults. The appendix also lists all the suggestions in list form, and the children's spiritual book list is probably one of the most comprehensive I have seen. I also appreciated many of the author's personal sharings about her spiritual path and family.
A note on language: The spiritual language of this book is very much in the vein of Eckhart Tolle (Power of Now, New Earth), Neale Donald Walsch (Conversations with God), and Esther and Jerry Hicks (Law of Attraction teachings). Although I have read all these authors and appreciate them, in general my own language tends to be more Buddhist in nature, but I didn't feel that was a problem here. The author is very flexible in her spiritual terms, and stresses the importance of finding a language that works for you, so if you can read past the terms, into the universal themes, I think it has a lot to offer anyone.Soul to Soul Parenting: A Guide to Raising a Spiritually Conscious Family Overview

The Second Half of Life: Opening the Eight Gates of Wisdom ReviewThere is nothing new in Angeles Arrien's book about the second half of life. Indeed, there isn't meant to be. Our lives at midpoint are about putting aside newness and embracing the ancient, the everlasting, the always true.
We live in an age that worships youth. Alongside this naive, if not indeed tragic pursuit to resist aging in all its aspects, we find ourselves as a society becoming ever more superficial, ever more devoted to what is external only, short on endurance, shallow in meaning. Small wonder so many of us approach midlife in a state of "crisis."
Yet there is no crisis. Arrien reminds us, by assembling in this collection of eight chapters named for eight gates, that this is not a time in our lives to resist or fear, but that it is, in fact, a time of wonder and beauty -- of the deeper and more meaningful kind. To pass through each of these "gates" is to be opened and enriched by the enlightenment of the second half of our lives. In each chapter, Arrien has brought together age-old quotes and wisdom from many different cultures, tested by time and place. Each chapter describes the gate through which we must pass, the task we must undertake to do so, the challenge, the gift we receive if we meet the challenge, reflections that help us to understand more fully this threshold, a list of practices to make this gateway a discipline.
The gates: silver (facing the new and the unknown); white picket (discovering one's true face); clay (intimacy, sensuality, sexuality); black and white (relationships and the crucible of love); rustic (creativity and service); bone (authenticity, character, and wisdom); natural (happiness, satisfaction, and peace); gold (letting go).
Each chapter guides us, gently yet firmly, toward facing what is around us as well as what is in us. The overall effect is soothing, I find, to the degree that it has helped me, approaching my own midpoint in life, see the aging process for the beauty and freedom it brings. It is a time to free oneself of the cumbersome masks one has worn in a more naive youth, to embrace wisdom and meaning rather than that which passes quickly and leaving no lasting mark. It is a time to gather all that we have learned in the first half of our lives and bring it all to fruition, entering a time of unbounded creativity, love based on truth rather than illusion, and finding a peace that will make crossing that final gold gate a time of celebration for a life well lived.
If we have lost respect for aging in our society, it is time we take it back. Arrien reminds us, by bringing back the wisdom of the ages, that age in ourselves is something to be welcomed rather than resisted. To resist it is to rob ourselves of what may well be the best time of our lives. The Second Half of Life: Opening the Eight Gates of Wisdom Overview

Wander Woman: How High-Achieving Women Find Contentment and Direction ReviewDo you ask yourself, "Can I be happy? Is that enough? Am I born a certain way? Can I change myself? If I choose to let go or not be focused on achievement, who will I be? How can I find a life partner or keep my relationship healthy even when I am always busy?"
"Wander Woman: How High Achieving Women Find Contentment and Direction" (Berrett-Koehler Publishers 2010) offers emotional antioxidants and avenues of deep introspection that trade the questions for answers.
Marcia Reynolds is a Master Certified Coach and PsyD, organizational psychologist, an international pioneer in executive coaching, a coach's Coach. She is a revolutionary thought leader who blends ancient wisdom, evidence based neuroscience, and persuasive coaching techniques in a targeted guide for high achieving women. She is a Huffington Post blogger and a serious devotee of social media. Her Facebook and Twitter engagement and her personal blogs are blessings in the social space.
I discovered Reynolds on Huffington Post and followed her social crumbs across new media. Every morsel of content the author shares online is rich and thought provoking. "Wander Woman" is no exception to her rule governing excellence.
In a refreshing departure from coaching content du jour, the author does not channel celebrity spirits. She offers no funky discourse about law of physics applied to law of attraction that Max Planck Society scientists find wildly entertaining. "Wander Woman" is a welcome antidote for women suffering from law of attraction fatigue.
I suffer from acute and chronic professional wanderlust. I am a restless spirit, a fractured soul. My adult journey has found me in newspaper reporting, magazine editing (print and online), real estate sales and training, online community management, risk management consulting, social media and blog coaching, and content creation across numerous venues. The author has the uncanny ability to make this reader think she tailored this book for me alone.
Interestingly, Reynolds appeals to women navigating through, below, and away from the glass ceiling -- seasoned executives, middle managers with a yen to grow professionally without climbing the corporate ladder, and entrepreneurs.
The author shares a poignant personal story of youthful adversity, a short stint in jail following an adventure with illegal drugs. She harnesses the will and power to transform a seminal experience into two masters' degrees and a doctoral degree, focusing on exploration of the human brain and behavior.
"This book is intended to help you answer the questions you ask when you wander ... Will I ever find peace of mind in the moment? Will I ever feel that the work I've done is good enough? How can I know if I am doing what I am meant to do as my purpose on this planet?" - Marcia Reynolds, MCC, PsyD.
I found conclusive answers to each question in a compelling week of emotion packed reading.
I debunked assumptions I shared with other women tied to self-limiting beliefs and uncompromising posture in key areas of my professional life.
I applied Reynolds' scoring card to identify dominant behavior patterns as archetypes. I selected several archetypes to serve as my personal Board of Directors, and I summon their energy in combination, at will, when I commence my day. As my tasks and challenges vary, so do the energies attached to them. They respond energetically and joyfully to each challenge and they appear happy to be acknowledged.
My Rebel archetype scored a solid 10, but I kept her off the Board ... she tends to incite emotional riots within me and with people around me. Revolutionary is more constructive, and working in conjunction with Visionary and Connector and Collaborator we may be able to score more success in some arenas. Coach and Teacher are busy these days, and their work will be enhanced with more input from Steward. Artist needs more oxygen. She is going to be Visionary's right arm.
Reynolds explores emotional intelligence, choices and consequences in decision making, behaviors, and the capacity to learn.
"Wander Woman" is more than a book. It is a transformation program for high achieving women.
I look forward to sharing proven Appreciative Dialogue techniques with a partner to problem solve issues. Appreciative Inquiry builds on what is working rather than trying to fix what is not working. Reynolds lays out the premise, step-by-step exercises, and constructs a strict "Appreciative Dialogue: Rules for the Road" the author has tested in companies and organizations across the country and around the world.
The book includes step-by-step personal exercises and detailed instructions for creating communities of support where Wander Women can help each other by testing out new behaviors and celebrate their wins together.
It is one of the best books I have ever read. I am inspired, grounded, and feeling clear and happy about my path. I am a Wander Woman wearing a quieted soul. The pain of fracture yields to contentment. This book is a treasure.Wander Woman: How High-Achieving Women Find Contentment and Direction Overview

You're Not Old Until You're Ninety: Best to Be Prepared, However ReviewThis book was like sitting in the garden and having tea with a fascinating grandmother who has wonderful experience to share. Rebecca tells a story, not about denying or ignoring old age, but of a gentle persistant inner journey that leaves me excited about growing older and discovering all the possibilities that lie within. It's a book about living - at any age. She also provides an excellent suggested reading list, which I have availed myself of. I've sent copies of the book to my loved ones, hoping they too would not only enjoy the story, but also realize the gift of wise experiences. You're Not Old Until You're Ninety: Best to Be Prepared, However Overview

The Price of a Gift: A Lakota Healer's Story ReviewThis is a must-read for everyone interested in healthcare, healing, mental health and/or Lakota culture and spirituality. It's a biography of the late Joseph Eagle Elk, which is riveting and remarkable. And as an extra bonus, the last chapter consists of a lively, multicultural discourse on the spiritual aspects of health and healing. I wish it were required reading for all healthcare professionals in the U.S.! As a Lakota, I found the book accurate and very moving. It's also one of the few books about Indigenous Tribal People written by a European-American that is truly and deeply respectful. The author conveys the complexity of Lakota culture without being patronizing or pseudo-mystical. Thank you, Mr. Mohatt, for this beautiful book. The Price of a Gift: A Lakota Healer's Story Overview
