Success Is Not an Accident: Change Your Choices; Change Your Life ReviewI sell 1500 audio visual training products and 1000 book titles from the worlds leading authors such as Zig Ziglar, Brian Tracy, Tony Robbins, Jim Rohn etc etc. I have therefore listened to about 200 tape programmes and read about 90 books on success, in the last few years.
I recomend very few books as most are rehashed versions of classic authors such as Napolean Hill, Robert Allen etc etc.
This book by Tommy Newberry, is rehashed material. There is nothing new or mind blowing in this book. When reading it you will read Zig, Jim Rohn, Tony Robbins, N Hill, Maxwell Maltz etc.
What makes this book very very good is the way he brings you to conclusions, without you realising you have done it. An example; I have always struggled trying to set goals, usually the authors get you to brainstorm, pick a few suggestions and use them as goals. Newberry doesn't mention picking goals until chapter 3. By chapter 3, with your assignment work from the prevoius 2 chapters, the author has brought you to the right conclusions so you can EASILY set your 3 year goals.
His approach is brilliant, each chapter builds up to the next one, so logical are the conclusions, you never have to jump a massive mental valley to find answers to the questions posed in the assignments at the end of each chapter.
The author brilliantly takes you several steps futher than a mere goal setting book, he teaches you the basic fundementals of Physco Cybernetics and Visualisation. If you study success/goal setting and have failed in the past to get results, it will be down to the fact you have not reprogammed your "servomechanism" as in Physco Cybernetics/Visualisation. This book teaches you what other goal setting books do not, combing Maxwell Maltz's Cybernetics to Lee Pulos's work on visualisation.
If I could give this book 10 stars I would because this book has got it all. The only thing it does not have is an author who loves himself, and loves telling his audience how great he is. A refreshing change from some other authors!

African Friends and Money Matters: Observations from Africa (Publications in Ethnography, Vol. 37) ReviewThis is an incisive, sociological story that grips like a good novel.
In the musical "My Fair Lady", Professor Henry Higgins when realizing that he cannot control his "project" student, Eliza Doolittle, sings lamenting "Why can't a woman be more like a man..." It is very easy for us born into a certain culture to have that feeling about particularly 3rd world cultures, and especially about sub-Saharan Africa. Westerners (North Americans and Europeans) often come away from Africa perplexed about life-style and ways of doing things. "Why do they...." and "How do they..." preface our questions when we think of actions we observe that seem counter-productive or may appear to "shoot a society in the foot." Why might money given for fertilizer to be purchased in May, instead be spent on a family wedding in April? How can one be a friend without seeming like a "sugar-daddy"? How can anyone maintain 40 "very-close friends"?
David Maranz, an anthropologist with 25 years experience working in Senegal with the Summer Institute of Linguistics, has written an introduction to the whys and hows of African life, based on his experience and numerous interviews he has had with both native Africas and Westerners living in Africa. This is an "Aha!" type of book, some of which may apply to societies in other countries as well. Dr. Maranz's discoveries are fascinating and often entertaining. Better yet, they provide important answers and background necessary for the respectful and productive interaction of drastically different cultures. He is clear to make the point that his assessment is not a one-size-fits-all in describing the many countries and multiple tribes within countries of Africa. This book is not complicated reading, but serves as an introduction to those curiosities and differences we have with the cultures of a large continent
This book is a MUST READ for anyone who has been to Africa, will be visiting Africa, knows anyone in Africa, or who has any interest in Africa and world affairs. It would also be helpful to native Africans wishing to better understand Western culture. This information may also suggest why what has perhaps worked well for African groups for centuries, may not work so well in the future.African Friends and Money Matters: Observations from Africa (Publications in Ethnography, Vol. 37) Overview

Money Secrets of the Amish: Finding True Abundance in Simplicity, Sharing, and Saving ReviewIn a time where money seems to be difficult to obtain yet easy to lose, I was excited to get my hands on this book regarding Amish money secrets. I do not know much about the author, Lorilee Craker, other than that she is a Mennonite who traveled into Lancaster County, PA to interview different Amish voices in regards to their money secrets--specifically, living simple and saving without depriving.
The book is 217 pages long, but it is a very fast read. I received the book this afternoon and started reading at about 5:00 PM. It is now 9:55 PM and I am writing the review. The book is just an enjoyable read because it is relevant to the economic times of our society. We are all wanting to know how to live simple, not be deprived, yet able to save money to enjoy retirement or the occasional luxuries of life.
Lorilee Craker introduces the reader to Bishop Eli King, Amos, Amish expert Erik Wesner, and more. One of the most memorable is Amos. He is a forty year old farmer who was raising fourteen children, renting a farm, and still managed to save $400,000 over twenty years. Could you imagine what this guy could do with two kids, or three? Saving that much money is absurd. Lorilee said that she expected to see deprivation in the household in some way, but she never saw it. The family was well-fed, jovial, content with life. Amos was saving money in order to stop renting the farm ($1,800/month) and buy a farm of his own. Nevertheless, I could not get pass the fact that this man was able to save $400,000 over twenty years with fourteen kids, a wife, and a rented farm. I am having a hard time managing to save 10% in a month and I only have a two year old.
The money saving and frugal lifestyle as described in this book is easily doable...if you choose to do it. We live in a culture that adopts the mindset of consumption and only the newest, best, and flashiest. The Amish do not believe this. The Amish also do not believe in debt. If someone does not pay on the due date (or before), the Amish believe that it breaks the commandment of "Do Not Steal." Every day that someone does not pay the lender its due money, that individual is stealing from that lender. If America adopted this attitude, I wonder what our economy would look like. I am not speaking about the government (which is a mess in and of itself), but I am mostly speaking in regards of American families.
My one drawback with this book is that it is mostly for women. Large portions of the book speaks about arts and crafts, cooking (I like to cook so I enjoyed the groceries/buying in bulk section), and woman clothes shopping at secondhand stores. While it was a bore to get through the arts and crafts section, the others I managed to make relevant to my life. While Lorilee relayed stories about women shopping and spoke about women's clothing, I was able to see the benefit in secondhand shopping and committed myself to it. My family and I are moving to Oregon from Phoenix in three weeks. We do not know what rain and winter is. Instead of going out and buying new clothes, I have decided that I will scower the secondhand shops in Oregon to get the items that I need to adapt to the new weather conditions.
Without a doubt, the most memorable portion of the book was the second chapter. It is about the Amish mindset/acronym that is the basis for their simple lifestyle. It is a motto that I have chosen to memorize in order to change my way of living. UWMW: Use It Up, Wear It Out, Make Do, or Do Without. In other words, eat all your foods and do not waste. Use everything completely. Do you really need to buy a new car? Phone? Appliances? Or, is there still life in the item and you're compulsion to buy is based on the desire to have the newest and latest, something that is culturally influenced? Make do with what you have. Do not buy something you do not desperately need. If you need something, see if you can substitute something you already have prior to purchasing. Is this something you can do without? If the answer is maybe...you probably can.
Not only is this mindset beneficial for families, the debt crisis, and the current economic landscape of our country, it is beneficial for Christians in the fact that we can live simply to save money in order to further the Kingdom of God for His Glory. What is better than living within our needs only, in order to save money to help others? While this may not be the greatest book regarding Amish money secrets or a fix-all book for economic problems, this is a great starter for those who desire to live simple, save, and change the course that many families and individuals currently find themselves on.

The Millionaire Real Estate Investor ReviewAn excellent book. You should know that I have read well over 200 books on real estate investing. And been investing seriously in real estate for over 25 years, as well as teach seminars on the topic. And this is the best book on the topic to come out recently. I predict it will be a classic, on the scale of William Nickerson's "How I Turned $1000 into Five Million in Real Estate in My Spare Time," no longer in publication. The writing is clear and simple. Most of the examples are investing in single family houses, so most people could start investing using this guide. The volume covers a vast range of issues related to being a successful real estate investor. You should be aware however, this is a "theoretical" or overview volume. There is not a lot of detail on how to impliment any one investment strategy. But it does give you a grounding in how real estate investing works. It gives you the guidelines for how to develop your real estate investing business. The only part I disagree with is the need to have a bunch of other people surround you as you build up your wealth. All the multimillionaire real estate investors I hang around with did it pretty much on their own. Maybe that just means we have different personalities. Other than that, however, I'm impressed--and there are few books on the topic that will inpress me these days. This is a far better investment than a $3,000 week-end seminar. You will get more from it and at a pittance of the price. I will definitely add this to my list of recommended real estate investment books. Ronald Starr***tigerinpa@yahoo.com

Pioneering Portfolio Management: An Unconventional Approach to Institutional Investment, Fully Revised and Updated ReviewThis survey of endowment investing offers an incisive framework for how to think about investable assets of charitable institutions. The value of the book is that Swensen has thought long and hard about how endowment investing differs from personal wealth management and how those differences ripple through almost all aspects of overseeing and implementing endowment investments. As the chair of an endowment investment committee and the author of the Endowment Stewardship blog, I find all of Swensen's insights valuable, but especially his chapters on endowment purposes, investment and spending goals, investment philosophy and investment process. [...]Also, if you're an individual investor trying to copy Yale, this book will explain why you're wasting your time.Pioneering Portfolio Management: An Unconventional Approach to Institutional Investment, Fully Revised and Updated Overview

10 Seconds to Wealth: Master the Moment Using Your Divine Gifts ReviewTom Marcoux has done it again. With 10 books and 21 audio programs his recent book 10 Seconds to Wealth is another in long list of best best sellers. Early in the book Tom defines "the 10 seconds" and on page 2 he reminds us that those all important 10 seconds can come at any time so be prepared. His book focuses on how each of us have divine gifts that we need to understand and use to be our best when those crucial 10 seconds occur.
Tom has filled his book with hard data research from neuroscience and then shows you how to apply this research. He identifies the divine gifts...love, humility, forgiveness, faith, grace and art and throughout the book shares how these gifts can help us create what we want in our lives, and the wealth we want.
He brings his vast experience with clients and real world situations to the book, sharing secrets with the reader on how he helped others. You'll love how he brings hundreds of quotes to the book to add to the points he is making.
Starting on page 74 he provides examples from millionaires and billionaires like Oprah, Bill Gates, Walt Disney on how they used their divine gifts and spirit to create their wealth. He misses nothing from including romance and wealth in relationships to restoring relationships, taking time for life's lessons, nurturing ourselves in Chapter 10 and even a guide on working with creditors in Chapter 11. Tom shares real world examples of how fear and other emotions or beliefs hold us back, and how to shift our thinking to achieve what we want.
Each chapter ends with a conclusion of the chapter and on page 412 he provides a review of the essence of 10 seconds to wealth. This is a must read for anyone, even if you have extreme wealth. Tom brings himself to this book and you quickly see that what he outlines and teaches in the book is how he runs his life, with love, gratitude, humility, open heart and love.

The Soul of Money: Reclaiming the Wealth of Our Inner Resources ReviewMost of us think that we understand the facts of money: money is good, lack of money is bad; having more money is better than having less money; competition and scarcity are normal because it's a jungle out there; the way to cure economic depression and hunger is to throw more money at the problem; and so on. But these aren't "facts" in the sense of objective realities; rather, they stem from attitudes towards money that are so ingrained in our culture that they rarely intrude into our consciousness.
This book is an eye-opener: as a highly successful fund-raiser and representative for the Hunger Project, Lynne Twist has worked with everyone from Amazon tribal members to CEOs of multi-billion-dollar corporations. Her sensitivity and willingness to listen have given her insight into the real-life consequences of our attitudes towards money (and resources in general). The money consciousness that she propounds in this book is transformative, but it's based on a breadth of experience that makes her conclusions convincing -- for instance, she's worked in real jungles, and the "law of the jungle" is NOT the way they actually operate!
Despite the many well-chosen anecdotes, this book deals primarily in generalizations. But that's appropriate: the author's purpose is to make us aware of our attitudes towards money, and suggest how changing these attitudes can transform the way we go about solving some of the world's most vexing problems. This book deserves not only to be read, but taken to heart. The Soul of Money: Reclaiming the Wealth of Our Inner Resources Overview

Integrity: The Courage to Meet the Demands of Reality ReviewThe Collins imprint of HarperCollins Publishers continues to pour out a very impressive stream of books that address ethical issues in business. Dr. Henry Cloud's book, "Integrity," published just a few weeks ago, is the latest offering in this genre. I found it to be a very encouraging, challenging and ultimately uplifting work. Henry Cloud, despite his background as a psychologist, manages to avoid the "psychobabble" one often encounters in reading clinicians who opine on business ethics. He anchors his thoughts in the real world of clients he has consulted with in helping them to address very real and concrete business issues that have deep roots in issues of ethics and integrity.
Dr. Cloud makes it clear that "integrity," as he uses the term, is much more than mere "honesty." Throughout the book he parses and elucidates six essential qualities and character traits that lead to success in the business world. He describes the kind of character that . . .
1) Creates and maintains trust
2) Is able to see and face reality
3) Works in a way that brings results
4) Embraces negative realities and solves them
5) Causes growth and increase
6) Achieves transcendence and meaning in life
"You will see how these character traits supercede gifts, talents and ability, and how the ones who have them succeed and the ones who don't, ultimately fail." (Page xii)
In this review, I will offer more quotations than I typically do in writing about a book. The reasons for this proliferation of quotes are that I want to share a fair sample of Dr. Cloud's nuggets, and he states the case very well in his own words. I could not improve upon them through more extensive commentary.
In talking with a wealthy businessman who is a personal friend, Dr. Cloud heard his friend comment on how he chooses to invest his money in businesses.
"I did not invest in those businesses. I invested in the people. I never invest in businesses I don't know anything about, but I will invest in a person. If I know their character, their history, how they operate, what kind of judgment they have, what kinds of risks are acceptable to them, how they execute, and things like that, and I know them well, I will invest. But I don't buy businesses I don't know anything about." (Pages 29-30)
Early in this book, Dr. Cloud gives us his expanded definition of integrity as it applies to the business world:
"And, the origins of the word we can see in the French and Latin meanings of intact, integrate, integral and entirety. The concept means that the `whole thing is working well, undivided, integrated, intact and uncorrupted.' When we are talking about integrity, we are talking about being a whole person, an integrated person, with all of our different parts working well and delivering the functions that they were designed to deliver. It is about wholeness and effectiveness as people. It truly is `running on all cylinders.'" (Page 31)
The author offers a very clear and helpful metaphor for the type of impact that this kind of person of integrity has on the lives of those with whom she or he interacts. Dr. Cloud posits that each of us, as we move through the waters of life, leave behind a wake, like that left by ships as they pass through the ocean. There are two aspects to the "wake" that we leave behind - the tasks we have performed and the relationships we have built.
"We leave a wake of people behind us as we move though their lives and their organizations. . . So, we must ask ourselves, `What does that wake look like?' Are a lot of people out there water-skiing on the wake, smiling, having a great time for our having `moved through their lives'? Or are they are there bobbing for air, bleeding, and left wounded as shark bait?" (Page 18)
In the chapter on Building Trust Through Connections, Cloud offers this profound insight that helps us to understand the difference between those persons and companies that command loyalty and those that do not:
"The human heart will seek to be known, understood, and connected with above all else. If you do not connect, the ones you care about will find someone who will." (Page 70)
Applying this principle alone in most companies today would dramatically reduce the costs of employee theft, turnover, recruiting, retention and succession planning.
In the chapter on Trust Through Vulnerability, Cloud talks about an early childhood experience he had with his mother that caused him to trust her more deeply than he might otherwise have been able to do.
"I needed a model that was strong enough to depend on, but vulnerable enough to identify with. That combination is what made it work. In essence, it said, `Hey, she is like me, in that she is afraid sometimes and feels like she can't do it. But, she does it anyway. She pushes forward.'
Her vulnerability is what made her power available to me." (Page 92)
In sharing What People In Touch Look Like, Dr. Cloud recounts an incident that happened on a retreat for CEO's, when a young "superstar" was given an opportunity to receive feedback from a more senior CEO.
"One of the more experienced guys looked up and said, `Want some feedback?' He said it in a way that left you wondering whether he was going to give sage advice or rail at the young man for being out to lunch in some way. There was just no way to tell from his poker face. But I will never forget the young superstar's immediate response: `By all means. Give me a gift.' He saw the feedback, whatever it was, as a gift because it could give him some reality that he did not know. I remember thinking, `We will be watching this guy's accomplishments for a long time.'" (Page 116)
Cloud then ratchets up the significance of this insight by suggesting a challenging way for us to put this principle of inviting feedback to a practical test:
"If you want to know your comfort level in this matter, think of going to the people you work with or are in close personal relationships with and give them 100 percent permission to be totally honest with you in answering the question: `What is it like to be on the other end of me?'" (Pages 116-117)
I must draw to a close this review, lest I run the risk of conveying Cloud's whole book to you via this Blog! I want to encourage you to buy the book as an investment in yourself and in your growth and success. But, in closing, I will share a final excerpt that captures the essence of what this book is all about:
"I just returned from an international leadership summit in which the leaders discussed their personal orientations toward growth. One global leader said that about ten years ago, he was near burnout and collapse, as his organization had exploded in size. But, he himself was dying. So, with input from his board, he made a huge investment of both time and money. He decided that every summer he would take six weeks away to study, refresh, get input into his soul, and re-create. He put the number two person in charge with orders not to call him `unless the whole thing were burning down.'" (Pages 222-223)
Dr. Cloud chose to protect the anonymity of this global leader. I do not know if he was referring to Pastor Bill Hybels of WillowCreek Church, but I have heard with my own ears Pastor Hybels share a similar story of taking intentional steps to prevent burnout by making the difficult decision to get away from daily pressures in order to carve out some time to recharge the batteries and to reinvigorate the soul. That is the very heart of integrity.
Most business leaders I know will find something of value in this book that they can internalize and begin to apply immediately - for their own benefit and for the benefit of all those who are "surfing their wake."
Enjoy.

Experience God as Your Provider: Finding Financial Stability in Unstable Times ReviewThis is not a book on how to invest, budget, or manage money. Instead, it takes the Christian reader into the heart of God as the one who provides, whether it be through an employer, the generosity of others, or in ways we couldn't dream of. The message is, no matter what the circumstances, no matter the source of income, God alone is the true provider. Ultimately our security doesn't lie in stable finances or a debt-free life but rather in Jesus Christ as Savior.
On a personal note, our family wasn't nearly as affected by the recession of the past couple of years as so many in our area were. But, given the field my husband works in (construction), the possibility of losing his job was always and still is a concern. This book was such an encouragement to me and brought me to a place of being able to surrender that fear to God completely as we rest on the truth that he will provide every need no matter what happens to us or around us.
I like that the author includes practical wisdom such as encouraging the reader to become debt-free, be wise with how one spends money, and to learn to be generous with what one has. But with every practical point he drives home the truth that God is the unfailing source behind every venue of provision. Those in the faith cannot help but come away with a renewed sense of peace despite uncertain times.

Gift-Giving in Japan: Cash, Connections, Cosmologies ReviewI really enjoyed this book. It can be a little wonkish, especially the end, but the main body of the book contains all sorts of very valuable insights into the gift-giving culture of Japan. As part of my profession I send Americans to Japan and need to be able to put the experiences they will likely have into context. This book really helped me to understand how the Japanese look at the custom of gift-giving, to translate it for Americans and to make better decisions about the types of gifts appropriate for our business to give (especially the use of CASH gifts - who knew it was so specific as to appropriate amounts, sequencing, and so forth). It also helped me to understand the strictures of the culture and when to just cooperate and when it was appropriate for a westerner to not participate. In keeping with my preference for this type of book, it sites lots of very specific examples, a range of situations and gives very detailed background information. This allows me to formulate my own interpretation and apply it to my own situation. As mentioned, the part at the end reads a little like the end of a doctoral thesis, and perhaps it was, but all the rest is really great for anyone who wants to have a fuller understanding of the gift-giving culture in Japan. I've used what I've learned from the book regularly since finishing it about a 9 months ago.Gift-Giving in Japan: Cash, Connections, Cosmologies Overview
