Transitions: Prayers and Declarations for a Changing Life ReviewJulia Cameron's books of prayers, declarations, affirmations (whatever one chooses to call them, depending on one's spiritual point of view) are very good ... but 'Transitions' is the best & I believe that's because of the format & the subject matter. The format differs from the other two books (they are 'Heart Steps,' which is focused on creativity, & 'Blessings,' focused on heartfulness) in that it has an affirmation followed by a simple suggested action (the others only have affirmations). The suggested actions aren't difficult--they require just a little mental effort or resolution. The subject matter was a great choice. It is, as the title implies, change. The book is ideal for anyone facing a major event such as a death, wedding, move, career change. ... All three of these books, even in paperback, are very nicely presented, with sturdier covers & higher quality paper & printing than is typical & this is a good thing because they're the sort of thing you'll want to keep around & savor repeatedly. ... If this is the first Cameron effort you're considering, you're in for a treat: with almost no exceptions (but avoid the over-priced, poorly conceived 'Artist's Way Creativity Kit') Cameron's stuff is outstanding & a great asset to anyone in recovery, expanding or trying to change, especially in creative directions such as writing. You'll get the most out of the affirmations if you also buy, ideally, 'The Artist's Way' & perhaps a Tim Wheater album ... & start Cameron's suggested practices of 'morning pages' & a weekly 'artist date.'Transitions: Prayers and Declarations for a Changing Life Overview

Water, Wind, Earth & Fire: The Christian Practice of Praying with the Elements ReviewIt doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that St. Francis of Assisi's "Canticle of the Creatures" (also known as the "Canticle of the Sun") is a powerful and poetic evocation of God's presence in the elements of nature. But few Christians, in my experience, seem to draw the connection that if the elements are indeed agents of God's blessings and means by which we can offer blessing and worship back to God, then it might make sense to think in terms of "air prayer," "water prayer," and so forth. This is the simple yet powerful premise of this lovely new book from Christine Valter Paintner, a Benedictine Oblate and the founder of the Abbey of the Arts website which explores the connection between spirituality and creativity.
Some readers may wonder if this is a crypto-Wiccan book, and indeed anyone interested in creative cross-fertilization between Neopaganism and Christian spirituality will find much to explore in this book. But let's be clear: the four elements (air, fire, water and earth) are universal energies, since they are grounded not only in the nature of the earth, but indeed in our very bodies (think of it: your skeleton and flesh are earth, your blood is water, your lungs and breath bring you air, and the very heat your body generates is the fire within you). Historically speaking, knowledge of the four elements and exploration of their spiritual meaning can be traced back to Greece, where Plato speaks of the elements, following the earlier Sicilian philosopher Empedocles. In other words, our earliest knowledge of the elements is not occult or magical, but rather philosophical and scientific, in scope. For Christians today, befriending the four elements is a way to honor the incarnational dimension of our faith, seeing God's presence in nature just as we believe the Holy Spirit and the Mind of Christ is present among those who are knit into the community of faith.
This book is essentially a workbook ("playbook"?) for prayer, divided into sections where Valters Paintner explores each element through poetry, stories, blessings, quotations, lectio divina, and suggestions for prayer and reflection. Most of the connections she highlights are obvious enough: water is linked to baptism, air to centering prayer, earth to feasting. This is not a book of secrets revealed so much as earthy common sense: water goes with the flow, fire brings passion and creativity, earth stabilizes and grounds us. Weave all four elements together and we find balance, perspective, and a sense of being at home in the good universe God has given us.
Obviously, this book should appeal to anyone with a love for Franciscan or Celtic expressions of Christian spirituality. But I think the author was wise not to limit her exploration of the elements to those particular strands of wisdom. This book feels universal in its tone and its application -- it is a book for all Christians, and indeed, for all people, anyone who might be interested in finding out what mystics like Hildegard of Bingen or John of the Cross or Thomas Merton might have to say to the question of bringing prayer and nature together.Water, Wind, Earth & Fire: The Christian Practice of Praying with the Elements Overview

An Artist Empowered: Define and Establish Your Value as an Artist-Now ReviewI found An Artist Empowered to be a gold mine, rich with what it takes to be an
artist--from painters to poets. The author is living it, and is willing to
put his soul on the line for the reader to examine and learn.
This book will also intrigue anyone with an interest in the arts, from
collectors to art teachers. An Artist Empowered: Define and Establish Your Value as an Artist-Now Overview

Legacy of the Divine Tarot ReviewThis is the third tarot deck that Ciro has created, and it's his best yet! I have his other two decks, The Gilded Tarot and Tarot of Dreams, and this is the most detailed if that's possible.
It seems that his decks have mirrored his mastery of the subject of Tarot in general. The Gilded is a good base foundation, with the Tarot of Dreams being more in depth. It also gave him and us a new way to experience Tarot, with the interactive DVD. This deck however has really gone even deeper. There is soon to be a website for this deck and each card with be animated! He has even created an entire world for his deck and it's characters to exist in.
There is a story of that world in the 300+ page book that accompanies the deck. The book is a wonderful resource, even if you don't normally like to read the "book meanings" there is wonderful insight as Ciro explains why he chose certain images or themes. I'm so thankful for the explanation he provides as to why the Knights are represented by their helmets, versus an actual knights. Brilliant! The book includes comments/interpretations by 3 other tarot experts. I really like the format used and would like something similar with other decks.
The card stock is the usual Llewellyn size and thickness which is always just fine. The deck has borders, but it's a "fade to black" effect which I quite like. It also come with the usual black bag. This deck is deserving of much more ornate storage however.
If you even remotely like Ciro's other decks this one is a MUST HAVE. I would have given the deck/book kit more than 5 stars if I could have.

Mama Gena's School of Womanly Arts : Using the Power of Pleasure to Have Your Way with the World ReviewI sat there, looking at the cover, being annoyed by the title and thought, "Oh brother.... this woman ought to get a life, I mean GIVE ME A BREAK!" and then I started reading.
And nodding, and laughing and even taking some notes.
This is NOT highly intellectual. It may not be 100% new material. What it does do is package its message in a way that is workable, applicable, engaging and enjoyable to read.
I found myself mildly annoyed in certain paragraphs though it certainly was not enough for me to set aside all the goodness just because of that.
It would be like turning down some double chocolate fudge because I didn't like the serving dish. Just not the right response.Mama Gena's School of Womanly Arts : Using the Power of Pleasure to Have Your Way with the World Overview

The Complete Artist's Way: Creativity as a Spiritual Practice ReviewThe exercises in the first part of this "trilogy" is more than worth the price of the book. If you choose to do the exercises, your creativity will be released/unblocked. What a positive response this book is for really anyone who wants to live more creatively. If you want to think of yourself as an artist, or if you never thought of yourself as an artist before, this book is for you. I have already given it as a gift and I'm not even half way through with the reading/journaling/pondering. It would be a tremendous book for your local library. Then, use it on a solo journey or work through it with a group. GigiThe Complete Artist's Way: Creativity as a Spiritual Practice Overview

Wisdom: The Greatest Gift One Generation Can Give To Another ReviewI bought Zuckerman's Wisdom based on excerpts I read in Reader's Digest. Now that I've received the book and had a chance to read it, I am blown away. It is stunningly beautiful, both the pictures and the words. I'm only 39 so I don't have the "perspective" someone 65 or older would but I can appreciate every line, every word, every image in this book. I teach high school English, history, and humanities and I can't find a single interview in this book that I couldn't share with my students somehow. We read Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart and his interview in the Zuckerman book only adds to what he wrote in his novel. I was so moved by what Nick Nolte had to say about finding peace in ourselves and then finding that same, sacred peaceful space in others. (There's more to him than that crazy DUI mug shot.) I had to order two more copies of the book--one to keep in my classroom and one to give to friends. I will ship more at Christmas. Really, the book is filled with so many different points of view, so many perspectives, so many ways to look at life and how to live it. Each interview is thought-provoking in its own way. The 56 minute Wisdom DVD that comes with the book is icing on the cake. It's one thing to look at the (beautiful) photographs and to read the interviews that go with them, and another to watch the subjects and hear their voices. I just can't say enough about this book and how moved I am by it. I saw that a previous reviewer commented on the font/text size and layout of the book, and while I agree it would make reading a challenge, I think the layout works. One, you can't put too many words on a page. I like to think of the white space as thinking space. The words are placed for effect. This isn't meant to be a textbook and the layout of the book is artistic and adds to the overall effect. My only hesitation in recommending the book is that politically conservative readers may object to some of the interviews in the book where the subjects criticise the current political administration. (I know my mom would dismiss the book when she got to Kris Kristofferson's comments about the wars, for example.) Having said that, the value of seeing things from another person's point of view is a great exercise in thinking and considering another viewpoint. Buy the book!Wisdom: The Greatest Gift One Generation Can Give To Another Overview
