The Compassionate Classroom: Relationship Based Teaching and Learning ReviewThis is a landmark book that all educators of young and elementary aged children deserve to become familiar with. "The Compassionate Classroom" has the power to transform and improve the classroom social scene and learning experiences of children and teachers alike.
Supported by the research and experience of psychologists and educators like Daniel Goleman and William Glasser, the authors' main idea is that education depends on positive relationships and that children and adults need to learn to communicate in a mutually supportive way to achieve this. They draw directly on the seminal work of conflict resolution mediator and trainer Marshall Rosenberg who says, "The objective of Nonviolent Communication is not to change people and their behavior in order to get our way; it is to establish relationships based on honesty and empathy which will eventually fulfill everyone's needs." Sura Hart and Victoria Kindle Hodson masterfully translate the principles of "nonviolent communication" so that children can understand and apply them. Some of the highlights of this book are the numerous practical activities and lessons that teachers can use with their students to improve their ability to listen with empathy to others and make requests that will be sympathetically heard.
Children learn better in a supportive environment where they feel emotionally safe. They need the tools to communicate "from the heart" in order to achieve this. On the contrary, in today's hurried world our students are often exposed to impersonal pressures and models of social interaction that promote indifference, competition, hostility and violent "solutions'' to personal or social problems. "The Compassionate Classroom" provides an antidote to all this and sets a different standard for our children, one that is humane and "life-fulfilling." Along with many fellow teachers I say a heartfelt "Thank you and congratulations!" to Sura and Victoria for this wonderful contribution to our practice. The Compassionate Classroom: Relationship Based Teaching and Learning Overview

You're Not the Boss of Me: Brat-proofing Your Four- to Twelve-Year-Old Child ReviewI absolutely love this book and have been awaiting the release - well, I have not been disappointed! Betsy's advice in this book is consistent and right-on, as was her guidance from her first book. It's such a pleasure to have books that speak to the current challenges of parenting and give no-nonsense, straight forward advice as well as specific scenarios and scripts. Not only have I continually used her previous book for my personal parenting challenges, but repeatedly recommend it to my clients as well. The same is absolutely true of "You're Not the Boss..." I immediately flipped to the chapter of my current challenge and will at some point devour every page. Once again, I will be using this book for my own guidance and professionally as well. Thank you Betsy - this is just what we all need. I await the next child development stage...

Truman's Loose Tooth ReviewMy 6 year old Autistic son will be losing teeth soon, and I wanted to prepare him. I ordered 4 or 5 books on losing teeth and this is his absolute favorite. He has limited communication skills, but for some reason, this book speaks to him. He even now lets me put my fingers in his mouth to check for loose teeth!
I feel that after reading this book to him nearly every night (his choice), that he will not be frightened when his first tooth gets loose. I even think he'll be excited!
Some books we ended up with made it sound scary to lose a tooth, but this book doesn't. It does have one page where the older brother and dad each tease the boy about ways to get the tooth out, but it's handled in a non-scary way (at least for us--and my kid is afraid of a LOT).
Update: Nov 2010 - My son has now lost 7 teeth, each time a new one gets loose, he digs Truman's Loose Tooth out of the bookshelf and we read it for a few nights, then after a month or so when the tooth finally falls out, we read it again. He is nearly 9 years old now, and still loves this book! We have NEVER had a fear or tear with any of his lost teeth, and I attribute that success to this awesome book. He even asked me to pull one that was just dangling in his way! He still has fears of other things, but not of losing his teeth.Truman's Loose Tooth Overview

Parenting From Your Heart: Sharing the Gifts of Compassion, Connection, and Choice (Nonviolent Communication Guides) ReviewThis book follows the methods described in Marshall Rosenberg's book about non-violent communication. I highly recommend this book for parents even if you have not yet read the Rosenberg book. The book is short (43 pages), yet it clearly describes the application of the non-violent communication technique to communicate, motivate and develop mutually empathic relationship with your child. It is a win-win relatiohship where the feelings and the needs of both the child and the adult are met without the use of the emotional blackmail of shame, guilt, blame or rewards. Inbal Kashtan described the communication method with lots of examples and exercises after each chapter so you can practice and reinforce the method. Incorporating this simple but powerful method of communciation between a child and a parent allows the child to develop self motivation, the ability to express feelings and needs and empthatically connect to self and others even in an emotionally charged environment. Its something we all strive for and special gift that you can give and share with your child.Parenting From Your Heart: Sharing the Gifts of Compassion, Connection, and Choice (Nonviolent Communication Guides) Overview
