The Soul of Supervision, edited by Margaret Benefiel and Geraldine Holton, is both illuminating and practical. The book offers a profound synthesis of contemplative spirituality, organizational dynamics and managerial technique. Drawing from a broad range of authors from the United States and Ireland, this book is a helpful and inspiring compendium for anyone engaged in spiritual direction, pastoral counseling, chaplaincy or organizational leadership. The Silent Seduction of Self-Talk: Conforming Deadly Thought Patterns to the Word of God ReviewShelly Beach has such a unique and delicious writing style that I feel as if I've stolen away for a private serving of chocolate cake when I read her books. Beach understands the power of words, and she's not afraid to use them! In addition, her vulnerable approach to personal topics transfers the issue to the reader, enabling the reader to relate and recognize him/herself on every page. Silent Seduction/Self-Talk makes me wonder if Beach has been following me around all my life, listening....
A great resource for breaking out of the seductive lies we have believed about ourselves for far too long! The Silent Seduction of Self-Talk: Conforming Deadly Thought Patterns to the Word of God Overview

The Ministry Staff Member: A Contemporary, Practical Handbook to Equip, Encourage, and Empower ReviewThis is an excellent leadership book written in the context of local church ministry. Dr. Fagerstrom's thirty plus years in church ministry and leadership make him a perfectly prepared author for this book. The book is loaded with practical wisdom, how to's, and insights on the personalities and politics of everyday administration.
Along with his years of church leadership, Dr. Fagerstrom served for a time as the president of a seminary, which was associated with the university where I served at the time as president. We worked together on many projects and I can say without fear of exaggeration or reservation that he is a man of integrity, knows whereof he speaks in terms of ministry and leadership, and is, to grab a phrase, "a class act." He now serves as executive vice president for an internationally distributed denomination.
I recommend this book highly not only for church ministry staff members but for anyone in leadership. The Ministry Staff Member: A Contemporary, Practical Handbook to Equip, Encourage, and Empower Overview

Leading Adult Learning: Supporting Adult Development in Our Schools ReviewLeading Adult Learning captures the theoretical underpinnings and practical applications both researchers and school leaders will find invaluable for preparing learners to negotiate complexities of life in the 21st century. Drago-Severson's new model of leadership for adult growth and learning rests on four pillar practices - teaming, providing leadership roles, collegial inquiry, and mentoring. She skillfully bases her work in constructive-developmental theory and masterfully explains this framework in ways that are enlightening to researchers and meaningful for practitioners. Carefully crafted examples, application exercises and reflective questions engage the reader's ability to make connections between theoretical concepts, professional and personal experiences as they are guided through each of the pillar principles.
This book advances our thinking beyond building organizational structural and instructional capacity to support student learning. Drago-Severson emphasizes the importance of valuing diversity and enhancing adult development as the next essential capacity-building dimension for supporting student learning. Readers are able to move beyond conceptualizing professional development models that too often focus on familiar technical fixes that can be inefficient against complex contemporary issues. This book answers the call to fill a significant gap in the literature for new ways to model professional development with more sustainable results and uses rich implementation examples in doing so.
Drago-Severson's new model reveals ways to accommodate varying needs and ways of knowing among adults in their professional development experiences. Readers are guided in customizing procedures for engaging the pillar practices that assist adults to grow toward greater capacity for facing contemporary leadership problems adaptively. The pillar practices inform how we can support and challenge each other to rise to our best selves as learners, leaders and thinkers while inspiring hope for sustaining those ideals as a society. I highly recommend this book to all who teach or provide consultation to school leaders.

Theory U: Leading from the Future as It Emerges ReviewI received the book a few days ago. I have ben reading for hours and hours, with just a few necessary breaks for digesting, reflecting, accepting and bringing my own thoughts together. This is one of the few books that is not just interesting when it comes to theory and methods. What makes it special is the mixture of theories and the authors own thoughts, experiences and break through thinking.
It has ben hard to lay the book aside, because it is so intense. And I know this is a book that I will read over and over again - with longer breaks under way - in order to have time for my own thinking. Soon it is time for summer vacation - then I will have lots of time to read the book again - at a lower pace - with the time to let my thougts wander. This is the kind of book that easily trap ones mind up to its own thinking.
To be more precise, what I found so interesting about this book:
- The Blind Spot - our unability to see our own weaknesses, what we do not understand and what we hide from.
- And, what is even more interesting: How to illuminate thr Blind Spot and make it clear to us how it stands in our way of dealing with life in a constructive way. We all have these Blind Spots - and we are unaware about them. Otto Scharmers openness in reveling his own Blind Spots through true life anecdotes made me see some of my own Blind Spots and gave me the will, the commitment and the power to face them. Facing them and seeing how they stand in the way of my True Self gave me the Willpower and Leverage to Confront them without hesitation or fear.
- Behind the Blind Spot lies possibilites to understand what we may be - what kind of a future we can create - in our Full Potential. Otto Scharmer calls this Presencing, which is a good descrption for the process the book led me into.
If you are working with development of organsizations, employees or leaders this book gives you the understanding of the limited outcomes of "Downloading" - which is the most common way of teaching - and what you get out of bringing people through experiences of opening, mind, heart and start to presence the possible future.
This book will probably be a milestone for understanding more of how teaching, laerning happens and that there is more to working with of people, organizations and social systems than we have understood so far.Theory U: Leading from the Future as It Emerges Overview

The Change Handbook: The Definitive Resource on Today's Best Methods for Engaging Whole Systems ReviewThe Change Handbook: The Definitive Resource on Today's Best Methods for Engaging Whole Systems by Tom Devane, Steven Cady, and Peggy Holman (Berrett-Koehler Publishers) is the most comprehensive guide available to methods of organization and community change. It's designed for quick and easy access to information about high leverage change from today's foremost practitioners. This new edition is updated to describe more than 43 additional change methods and includes new chapters on selecting a method, mixing and matching methods, and responsibilities of the people involved, conditions for success, and more. This tremendously expanded second edition--400 pages longer, nearly twice the length of the first edition--will undoubtedly become the definitive resource in this rapidly expanding area.
This book offers practical insights and how to affect systems in positive ways to make them do the things we wish them to do and to mitigate the harm caused by some systems. Anyone who is interested in social change and personal change at any level will find the practical suggestions for intervention in this book to be positively enlightening.
In 1999, the first edition of The Change Handbook provided a snapshot of a nascent field that broke barriers by engaging "whole systems" of people from organizations and communities in creating their own future. In the last seven years, the field has exploded. In this completely revised and updated second edition, lead authors Peggy Holman, Tom Devane, and Steven Cady profile sixty-one change methods--up from eighteen in the first edition. Nineteen of these methods are explored in depth, with case studies, answers to frequently asked questions, and details on the roles and responsibilities of the people involved, conditions for success, and more. This tremendously expanded second edition--400 pages longer, nearly twice the length of the first edition--will undoubtedly become the definitive resource in this rapidly expanding area.
Simply put I can not find enough superlatives for the utility of this volume when it comes to explaining the practical steps necessary in systems change. The book is so comprehensive that many of the chapters could actually be books themselves. What is useful here is that one finds the boiled down essential information in one place. By offering potpourri of possible strategies group facilitators and therapists do not become overly committed to only a few strategies, but can find new ways to do old things better and with less effort and ways to evaluate old efforts that may have been well-intentioned but the intervention was misdirected. The book is a wonderful reference to the important evolving field of systems analysis and change. You overlook this volume at your peril.

Live More, Want Less: 52 Ways to Find Order in Your Life Review
The author Mary Carlomagno, does an outstanding job in this short 180 page, easily readable book of giving you 52 ideas to create more time to enjoy the things you love. The answer as you can probably already guess is LESS STUFF. The book is broken down into 52 different ideas, one for each week of the year. You open to a week, and there is one or two pages as a theme. The author has put together a metaphor to teach you what she is trying to convey. After the theme, you will find several very helpful hints giving you ideas as to how to implement the concept that was just described. One of the ways I look at book to see if I like it, is to select a couple of random pages scattered through the book. If something jumps out at me that I find interesting in 2 of the 3 random hits, I know I am onto something. When looking through this book initially, I was finding interesting ideas and actions that I could execute, in every page I looked at. I knew I was onto something here, and so I read the entire book. Let's look at just a few of the interesting thoughts and actions that she has come up with:*Write down where your items live - Interesting isn't it. She is treating an item as though it had a life of its own, and in the end, it does. You could call it the emotional lives of things we own. The objects we possess take on their own lives. You buy an exotic car, and all of a sudden you are committed to taking care of it, from washing it to changing the oil. Think before you enter into this relationship.

*The things you use the most often should have the prime real estate in your home - Think about it, do you really want to fish around in a closet for something you use 3 times a week. We have to set order in our lives, and this book shows you how to do it.

*Take a vacation from your problems - This is from the old Bill Murray movie. Unless it was explained to you, you would never think about it but it's true. You have a problem, you think it through. Once you have exhausted yourself thinking about it, do we really need to obsess over it for hours and days? Take a vacation from it. *Free means free of charge; it doesn't mean it is free of space. How many of us own scores of items that we have never subsequently used but because we got it for free, we retain it, and it gobbles up space in our closets and our lives. *If most of your time is spent with people who drain you of energy, it's time to rethink the people - we are missing out on more fulfilling experiences in life. Be with people that enrich us.

*Concentrate on the joy in the process, and the results will take care of themselves. CONCLUSION:I found this book very valuable in terms of helping us think about the things we should already be thinking about. I have already put into effect several concepts that I learned from the author's work, and isn't that supposed to be what it's all about. Reading something new and then making your life better by implementing it? Thank you for reading this review.Richard C. Stoyeck

The Spirituality of Imperfection: Storytelling and the Search for Meaning ReviewThis book is to spirituality as riding a rollercoaster is to physics. It is not a read; it is an experience. Kurtz and Ketcham have managed to tell their own story in such a way that the reader is invited to share in that experience.
Finding this spirituality of imperfection in Alcoholics Anonymous and the twelve-step program, K&K have scoured spiritual writings throughout history to find the words to describe their experience. Boldface quotes and stories color almost every page.
K&K find the essence of the spiritual in human imperfections and failure, in the inevitability of pain. Spirituality is not the evasion of consequences or errors, but rather learning how to live with them. They call trying to be perfect the most tragic human mistake. They are clear, spirituality is found in asking the right questions, not in finding the right answers.
Perhaps every reader of this book will not be able to hear it's music. Perhaps only those who have been wounded by life, need it. Perhaps only those who have drunk deeply of failure will find nourishment here. All I know is that I did, and to Kurtz and Ketcham I will always be grateful. The Spirituality of Imperfection: Storytelling and the Search for Meaning Overview

The Modern Christmas in America: A Cultural History of Gift Giving (American Social Experience) ReviewAlthough subtitled, "A Cultural History of Gift-Giving," this book by William Waits covers a broad spectrum of this history of the Christmas celebration in this country. "This book tells how the modern Christmas emerged by focusing on gift-giving." Abundant historical illustrations and pictures are included to amplify the story.
Chapters include, "The Gifts Everyone Wanted: The Rise of Manufactured Gift Items," "The Feminization of Christmas: The Expanded Role of Women in the Celebration," "'Something for the Kid': Gifts from Parents to Children," "The Rationalization of Charity: Gifts from the Prosperous to the Poor," "The Rationalization of Christmas Bonuses: Gifts from Employers to Employees," and "Riches and Uncertainty: Superabundance and Retaileers' Anxieties Since 1940." There is also a very helpful Index.
Waits states that "The custom of presenting handmade Christmas gifts began to change after 1880 because of rapid industrialization and the dramtic expansion of the country's transportation system." He later notes that "The Santa Claus of the first eighty years of the nineteenth century both rewarded and punished children," but more recently, Santa has become "more gentle and forbearing with children."
Waits observes that Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol" story "was the first major literary piece in several centuries to advocate Christmas charity and it caught the public fancy." Of course, "When it entered the welfare field during the Depression, the government used rational, bureaucratic forms to collect and dispense aid to the needy ... By the 1930s, personal individualized Christmas charity was rationalized almost out of existence."
He concludes by noting that the "nostaligic" notion of a simple, rural Christmas in the "good old days" is correct "in many respects," but "is misleading in other significant regards." For example, "it never defines accurately when the nostalgic Christmas existed, and when it was transformed into the modern celebration"; "it obscures the diversity of the many aspects of the celebration"; "they overlook the enthusiasm with which Americans have embraced the modern form of celebration with its purchased manufactured gifts"; and "they got, by and large, the type of celebration they wanted. The modern Christmas was not forced on Americans against their will."
This book is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for anyone wanting to know more about Christmas and its modern celebration. The Modern Christmas in America: A Cultural History of Gift Giving (American Social Experience) Overview
