The Book of Stones: Who They Are & What They Teach ReviewBefore you buy this book, do yourself a favor and have a look at the product catalog of the authors' crystal business, called Heaven & Earth. I was impressed with this book at first, but then I began to notice how many of the crystals are trademarked. Trademarked crystals seemed a little odd to me, and I can give them the benefit of the doubt if there are one or two, but apparently the authors are "discovering" these new crystals all the time. Keep reading the catalog and you'll find that a lot of these "new" (and as it happens, invariably rare and sold by the gram) crystals are regular, not so uncommon crystals with fancy trademarked names, some other variation of a manmade coating on an existing crystal, or even just glass. Have a good look at the catalog, because the purpose of this book is to convince you that you need the stuff in that catalog.
Don't get me wrong; I believe in crystal healing and that's probably why this systematic exploitation of crystals and the people eager to learn about them makes me feel ill.
I gave this book 2 stars because the photography is lovely and it makes a good doorstop. Please look for another book to buy, though.

The Encyclopedia of Crystals ReviewI have many other books on crystals, including Judy Hall's Crystal Bible, and I must say I just fell in love when I saw this book. Right off the bat it was able to help me identify crystals I had purchased that were mislabeled by the shop. It had photo examples of almost every crystal in the book and some having multiple examples. The photos are beautiful and really helpful. What made me bring it home was I found crystals that can help children with ADHD, which my oldest son has. This is the first book I have found so far that covers it.
My only real complaint, like the other reviewer, is that the crystals are listed by colors. In actuality, it is probably a good thing as most other books are by name. You may not know the name of a particular crystal, but know its color. So you can search in that color section to hopefully find a photo resembling the crystal you have.
With each crystal it gives you the crystal system, chemistry, hardness, source (or origin), chakra, number, zodiac sign, planet, what it is beneficial for, and additional information of what the crystal is useful for. This is more for knowing the stones. If you are looking for a book where you can look up the crystal that meets your needs as far as ailments or any healing, I'd recommend Judy Hall's Crystal Prescriptions.
I would definitely recommend having this in your library for anyone interested in crystals and crystal healing.The Encyclopedia of Crystals Overview

The Awakening of Kundalini ReviewA Kundalini awakening may not be desired. This is at least one thesis of the book which is proven. Gopi Krishna was a middle class clerk who practiced meditation and began to experience an awakening of the kundalini, an energy source at the base of the spine which he admits he cannot fully explain. He does not try to theorize into divine origin of this power, but rather puts forth his experience, which is often harrowing, insatiable appetitites, the feeling of buring up, inability to sleep, and he hopes that medical science will continue to study this phenomenon, so that the ancient ideas can be elucidated by modern science. It is also an autobiography. Krishna's father basically became a sort of attic-hermit, a sannyasin that didn't quite leave the house, but became somewhat of a burden on the family, and led them to poverty. Gopi Krishna does not judge, but the reader wonders about those effects on the author.
What I like best about this book is its realism in dealing with a topic which westerners especially have turned into a mushy neo-hippy thing for those who have lost their sex drive. There is no practical advice for the awakening of Kundalini, as Krishna asserts it must be at least somewhat random, it can happen by accident, and one might meditate and practice yoga for years and years and never achieve it. There is some discussion of the saving of semen which will go through the spine to the brain, and some discussion of the traditional powers ascribed to an awakened kundalini, but very based, and trying to be very honest.
