The Hardest Sermons You'll Ever Have to Preach: Help from Trusted Preachers for Tragic Times ReviewDr. Bryan Chapell has put together a wonderful collection of essays from well known established Pastors who often are called upon to preach the tough sermons at funerals that have devastated a family, a church or a community. How do we as faithful Pastors respond in such times of crisis? How do we write and preach sermons that will be tools in the Redeemer's Hands to bring comfort and care, show empathy and compassion, and yet preach the Gospel in all situations?
The books is broken down into five sections, they are;
Part One: Preaching in Response to Tragedy
Part Two: Preaching after the loss of a child
Part Three: Preaching funerals with Especially Difficult Causes or Circumstances
Part Four: Preaching funerals for Public figures
Part Five: Preaching after Suicide
Then there are three Appendixes to help the pastor deal with putting together these sermons and helping families to cope with the stresses they are facing.
Within the Five Categories listed above there are twenty-five chapters written by people such as John Piper, Bryan Chapell, Tim Keller, Michael Horton and others. The combined wisdom of these men and the years they have spent in preparing and teaching these difficult sermons gives them a unique perspective and they provide us with guidance that is difficult to find almost anywhere.
If you Shepherd a Flock of any type you will eventually be faced with a difficult crisis. I'm convinced that this will be the first reference book that you will reach for when you sit down to start writing that sermon that you desire to bring hope and healing to your congregation.
I want to thank Dr. Chapell for putting this together and believe he has given a very valuable gift to the Body of Christ.
Enjoy! The Hardest Sermons You'll Ever Have to Preach: Help from Trusted Preachers for Tragic Times Overview

U Got 2 Believe ReviewIf you've ever heard Fr. Stan preach and sing, you'll know how dynamic he is. This book is in the true Fr. Stan style - down to earth, funny, no nonsense, right to the point. He's a great teacher of Catholic doctrine and a great student of Pope John Paul II. There are many references to the Catholic Catechism and the Bible so it's good to have them handy when reading this book. Although this book is geared towards young adults (teens, early 20's, etc...), everyone can benefit and learn from it. There are no grey areas when it comes to this grey friar. Everything is in black and white. You definitely know Fr. Stan's position on various subjects and it's in line with the teachings of the Pope and the Church. And that's what I've always liked about Fr. Stan. He tells it like it is, whether you like it or not. Sometimes the truth is hard to take. But in the end, it makes us stronger. Fr. Stan is a great teacher and preacher (and now writer) of the truth. Check out this book. It will open your eyes and invigorate your spirit!!!U Got 2 Believe Overview

The Meaning of Marriage: Facing the Complexities of Commitment with the Wisdom of God ReviewTim Keller is the pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Manhattan, New York since he planted it in 1989, and the church reflects the city's demographics: approximately 80% of the people (in a church of several thousand) are single. So Keller has a lot of experience in teaching, counseling and shepherding singles in particular. This book had its roots in the early 1990's when he did a series of sermons on marriage because of the skepticism, fear, and arguments that many of the singles in attendance had toward marriage in the beginning stages of the church - and still do today. He also wrote this book to share from his own experiences with his wife Kathy of 37 years and counting. However, most importantly he wrote this book to give a compelling vision of what marriage was designed to look like from the Bible from Genesis to Revelation - from the first marriage of Adam and Eve to the last marriage of Christ and the Church.
Keller states in the introduction, "its [the books] primary goal is to give both married and unmarried people a vision for what marriage is according to the Bible." I believe that Keller succeeds in giving a very compelling case for marriage from the three stands above - from his experience, his realistic apologetic of building a case for the benefits and values of marriage, and then giving a compelling biblical vision throughout the book for the beauty of marriage when it reflects the glory of Christ at the center of it all. He does not minimize the difficulties, or the effort and hard work involved in a marriage, but is clear-headed, and cogently eloquent in presenting the "complexities of commitment with the wisdom of God."
Here is a sample of an excellent example he gives for submitting to the Bible as God's manual for marriage:
"Think of buying a car: If you purchase a vehicle, a machine well beyond your own ability to create, you will certainly take up the owner's manual and abide by what the designer says the car needs by way of treatment and maintenance. To ignore it would be to court disaster...Plenty of people who do not acknowledge God or the Bible, yet who are experiencing happy marriages, are largely abiding by God's intentions, whether they realize it or not. But it is far better if we are conscious of those intentions. And the place to discover them is in the writings of the Scripture."
Some of the ambivalent views and objections to marriage Keller elaborates on and dispels in this book are as follows:
"Marriage is just a piece of paper that only serves to complicate love"
"Marriage was originally about property and is now in flux"
"Marriage crushes individual identity and has been oppressive for women"
"Marriage stifles passion and is ill-fitted to psychological reality"
The Outline of Keller's book is as follows:
Chapter One - A rich and deep discussion of Genesis 2 and Ephesians 5 bringing Paul's discussion into today's context and demonstrating "why the gospel helps us to understand marriage and how marriage helps us to understand the gospel."
Chapter Two - With great skill and penetrating insight Keller shows how the sin nature resulting in selfishness necessitates the supernatural work of the Holy Spirit in making the saving work of Christ operative in bringing two hearts to beat as one.
Chapter Three - He helpfully shows what biblical love is - and what covenantal commitment is all about.
Chapter Four - He elaborates on the whole question of what marriage is for: "It is a way for two spiritual friends to help each other on their journey to become the persons God designed them to be...there is a kind of deeper happiness that is found on the far side of holiness."
Chapter Five - He talks about the power of truth; the power of love - via affection, friendship, and service all in the context of grace.
Chapter Six - An excellent discussion of the Trinitarian roles and how that translates into gender roles in a marriage.
Chapter Seven - On Singleness and Marriage. Here is a sample of some guidelines he gleans for singles in relationships before marriage:
"Recognize that there are seasons for not seeking marriage."
"Understand the "gift of singleness.'"
"Get more serious about seeking marriage as you get older."
"Do not allow yourself deep emotional involvement with a non-believing person."
"Feel `attraction' in the most comprehensive sense."
"Don't let things get too passionate too quickly."
"...don't become a faux spouse for someone who won't commit to you."
"Get and submit to lots of community input."
Chapter Eight - A good discussion of sex - realities and misperceptions - and the glory of it when it is practiced the way God designed it.
The book closes with a short epilogue and a short, but very helpful discussion on decision-making and gender roles.
All the chapters are very well written, have depth and penetrating insight, are logical and clear, balanced in dealing with the "then" and "now" of how the Scriptures apply and always pointing to Jesus at the center of the meaning of life and marriage. Dr. Keller knows what he's talking about and has done an outstanding job of building a great case for marriage in a culture that simply doesn't understand it and hasn't been consulting the Creator's manual and applying it in our marriages. I now have a new favorite book on marriage to recommend whole-heartedly to singles and married couples alike!

Savvy Auntie: The Ultimate Guide for Cool Aunts, Great-Aunts, Godmothers, and All Women Who Love Kids ReviewIn every family, an aunt plays a different role. She may be a fully integrated family member who is involved in the daily activities of her nieces & nephews, perhaps filling a void where parenting is absent. Or she may just sweep in for the big holidays, spreading her love and cheer, only to disappear again until the next celebration. But the majority of aunties probably fall somewhere in between...and that is where this gem of a book can really help.
An aunt is a hybrid of sorts- mom, sister, best friend, and confidant. To thrive in her role, she needs to be armed with practical child-rearing knowledge (even though she may not have her own), and yet keep the "auntie spirit" alive so that her nieces and nephews do not view her as simply an apendage to their mother.
Savvy Auntie: The Ultimate Guide is chock full of advice and humor for aunties struggling to identify their role with their nieces and nephews. Aunts seeking clarity will find it in this extremely helpful, well-organized, and easy-to-read guide. Finally, they will feel validated, appreciated, and understood!Savvy Auntie: The Ultimate Guide for Cool Aunts, Great-Aunts, Godmothers, and All Women Who Love Kids Overview

Discover the Gift ReviewI'll begin by saying that the central premise of the title and promise of the film--that we each have an invaluable, unique core purpose in our lives that should be fully expressed and generously shared--is a lesson I hold dear (though it was not because of this film that I learned its value).
Though there are people in the film whose stories and wisdom support this message, there are aspects of Discover the Gift that completely undermine their contributions. It's unfortunate but the fundamental obstacle for me was the filmmaker himself. Mr. Lichtenstein seems sincere in his own search for peace within and in his relationships, but while admitting faults he still seems more intent on portraying himself as a grand teacher of profound wisdom--not as someone still finding his way. He definitely earns a star for taking steps to improve his well-being, but the film feels more like a giant ego trip for him. Rather than being a person who has "discovered" something so powerful in the universe that it's changed their life and they cannot help but tell others about it with joy and zeal, the desire to "tell others" feels as if it is the driving force behind Discover the Gift. As others have mentioned, it does also have a feeling of opportunism as if trying to mirror the success of the film/book, The Secret.
It's sad--Sad that someone would try to use some beautiful concepts for what appears to be either earthly or self-gratifying reasons. I came to this looking for encouragement at a difficult point in my life, and now after having watched the film and bought the book I'm sorry to come away sharing such a negative feeling. But we've all seen that each of us is susceptible to pride in our "spiritual achievement" and also may have known teachers that seem more interested in receiving admiration than in serving their students.
There are some impressive teachers who contribute to both the film and book (their contributions to the book are just transcripts of what they say in the film). However useful their guidance, and however nicely packaged this product is, it lacks a true heart.Discover the Gift Overview
