More Jesus, Less Religion: Moving from Rules to Relationship ReviewThis book is amazing and one that I will recommend over and over. It speaks to the realities of what it means to be a Christian. Sometimes Christians are expected to be super human (not to have real feelings), even by fellow Christians. This book reminds us that God gave us feelings and we are to bring all of those feelings and emotions to Christ--the good and the bad. For me, this book was confirmation that I am on the right track to a true relationship with my Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. Before reading this book, please pray and ask the Holy Spirit to open your mind and give you understanding. You must be ready, spiritually, for what the authors say. If You Had Controlling Parents: How to Make Peace with Your Past and Take Your Place in the World ReviewThis book was written for those of us who grew up in an unhealthy environment, and had parents who controlled us in unhealthy ways. The author emphasizes working through our issues as adults, not playing "blame games." Interviews with people from all walks of life are liberally quoted throughout each chapter.
What makes this book exceptional is that the author is advocating education and change, not revenge. He shows how examining your parents' history in detail can help you heal and move forward as a fully functioning adult free to make decisions based on something else than what your parents' would say.
Controlling parents don't have to be outwardly abusive nor do they always have malevolent intentions towards their children. However, trauma stays with a person and its after-effects can be passed on to the next generation.
The author clearly contrasts unhealthy with healthy parenting and offers checklists to help the reader. He explores why people overcontrol, and he provides exercises to help the reader work through his or her feelings. If you have trouble believing that the blood of Jesus can do more then wash your sins away, you have to read this book! Pastor Benny does a great job of answering questions and explaining, with a Biblical foundation, just how much power there is in the Blood of the Lamb. I have read most of Benny's books now, and have been taught, inspired, and loved all of them. Not only is Benny a wonderful and anointed man of God, he's a wonderful man. His love for the Lord is clearly evident in all that he does, as is his love for his wife, and children. He's very real, and open, and that really comes out in his writing. His books are not only informative, and will bless your life, you'll really enjoy reading them! I have to be careful when I read his books....because when I pick one up, I can't put it down, and end op reading all night!
