The Love & Respect Experience: A Husband-Friendly Devotional that Wives Truly Love ReviewInitiating, leading, and maintaining a regular time of structured devotions with my wife has been a huge weakness in my life. I/we have tried several times and it has never seemed to stick for a few reasons:
First, time seems to always be our arch nemesis. Life in ministry is busy and life as a stay-at-home mother of two, soon to be three, is no easier. Mornings are frantic getting everyone ready for the day. Evenings are busy with the children. By the time night comes around, we are both generally drained.
Second, when we have shared in a devotional experience, it has mostly felt forced and odd. I really cannot explain why, it just does.
Third, it's challenging to find a good, usable devotion book. Many are too simplistic.
I am the audience of Eggerichs' book. I want to share a devotional time with my wife, but for the above reasons...ok, excuses...I haven't consistently done so. Eggerichs has no issue with this agenda, he is actually pretty clear about it. After all, it's even alluded to in the book's subtitle: A Husband-Friendly Devotional that Wives Truly Love. In the Introduction, Eggerich writes to husbands, wives, and couples to explain that his goal is provide devotions for couples that will not feel forced or overwhelming for husbands, that will not cause couples to put each other under the marriage microscope of criticism, and that will produce the closeness for which wives yearn.
Eggerichs has built the devotions around his book, Love and Respect. Although I have not read this book, it appears that The Love & Respect Experience is simply his previous work synthesized and adapted into devotional form. That's not necessarily a criticism, merely an observation. It may not be a bad strategy if it helps some men who might not sit down to read a book to digest the material.
The basic premise of this devotional book, and apparently Love and Respect, is, based on Ephesians 5:33, that men most need respect from their wives and women most need love from their husbands. Eggerichs expands upon this thesis by presenting three common cycles of marriage, depicting the vastly different lens through which men (blue) and women (pink) perceive things, and offering practical tools and techniques to lead men to love their wives and wives to respect their husbands. This philosophy is briefly summarized in the Introduction and Appendix B, although it is fleshed out in the devotions themselves.
Many men will find great relief in how Eggerichs recommends couples to use this book. First, Eggerichs does not offer a frequency for working through these devotions. While he admits that because there are fifty-two, it would seem fitting to do one a week, that is not required. Second, he recommends that couples read the material separately and then come together to simply discuss them, thereby reducing the common awkwardness of reading a devotion out loud.
The fifty-two devotions are rather brief, some barely reaching a page and a half, which some may feel is a weakness of the book. Each devotion includes a Bible verse, insight from Eggerichs, a key insight, a prayer, and action points. Discussion questions are also available in Appendix A.
The only criticism I would level against The Love & Respect Experience is that the verses seem to be added simply to "devotionize" the book. Eggerichs' comments don't really address the verses which is not the way I would like people approaching the Bible. However, his principles and content are born out of Scripture and are quite important for married followers of Jesus, so I can live with this shortcoming.
Having not worked through this with my wife yet, I will offer a qualified endorsement of The Love and Respect Experience. I am looking forward to using this a devotional guide myself and believe it would be helpful for married couples to either introduce, refresh, or reinforce the basic concepts.
