The Everything Ghost Hunting Book: Tips, tools, and techniques for exploring the supernatural world (Everything (New Age)) ReviewI've read a number of "paranormal investigating" how-to books, but this is the one I'm most impressed with. First, it covers topics the other guides don't: a history of hauntings through the ages, following scientific protocols and team member accountability, and mapping power sources and natural anomalies (and that's just the beginning--I've learned more from this book than any of the others I've read). Second, each topic is covered in depth, and in many cases it takes the reader through a step-by-step how to. Third, it's well written and concise.
This book is not only a wonderful primer for beginners, but a good resource to have for intermediates as well as those who are seasoned: everything is easily found using the index, so it's a great reference guide. In addition, those who aren't paranormal investigators (such as writers and journalists) who need to research the topic in order to sound knowledgeable about what they're writing will also find this invaluable.
If you're looking for a well-researched book that covers every topic in paranormal investigating, get this one. You won't be disappointed.

Do Dead People Watch You Shower: And Other Questions You've Been All but Dying to Ask a Medium ReviewWhen I saw this book, I was a little leery to read it because as a Christian, I've been taught that "mystical" things are to be avoided (psychics, ghosts, etc). However, Bertoldi often mentions that she belives in God and that in her "readings," she asks for God's protection. That, plus the interesting title, caused me to read the book, and I am glad that I did!
For people who are unsure about the afterlife or the existence of God, in no way does Bertoldi preach or push her beliefs throughout the book. She even mentions that her husband is a nonbeliever. Rather, Bertoldi shares her experiences and the things that she has learned from the spiritual world.
Personally, I've never really been a believer in ghosts and aliens and things, but Bertoldi's work makes a really good case for a spiritual world that is near our own. It hasn't made me a hard-core believer in mediums and such, but it's at least opened my mind more, helped answer random questions that I've had about death, etc. It made me stop and question if I'm living a good life, and it helped pull my focus away from living an Earth-life to trying to live a life that is more fit for Heaven.
Very interesting book. I highly recommend it!Do Dead People Watch You Shower: And Other Questions You've Been All but Dying to Ask a Medium Overview

The Little Book of True Ghost Stories ReviewAs an admirer of Echo Bodine, I was really pleased to see that she'd published another book on her experiences with ghosts. Unfortunately, if you have read "Relax, It's Only a Ghost" and "Dear Echo" these stories will be familiar to you. The only new material I found was a brief mention of her read on a few deceased celebrities. That said, if you've not read Echo's two earlier books on ghosts, by all means get this one.The Little Book of True Ghost Stories Overview

Peony in Love: A Novel Review"There are several elements here - Tang Xianzu's opera, the lovesick maidens, the history of The Three Wives' Commentary, and the societal changes that allowed it to be written. I know they're rather complicated and overlap a bit, so please bear with me." So says Lisa See, the author of Peony in Love in her notes at the end of the novel.
Fortunately, I also found the text of the notes on the author's web site under the heading `On Writing Peony in Love' while I was reading the book. If I hadn't, I'm sure I would have given up on this novel at about page 110. The notes provided much needed insight into the author's purpose and an invaluable historical context for what I was reading.
I did find the historical aspects and the vivid descriptions of the Chinese afterlife fascinating. Having already read Snowflower and the Secret Fan I didn't feel I needed another description of footbinding so I confess that I skipped that brief passage. The author's ultimate point is clearly the issue of women's voices and `a woman's need to be heard.' She makes this point strongly - and repeatedly. For all of that, there was still much to enjoy in the novel.
In my opinion, this book doesn't live up to her earlier novel, Snowflower and the Secret Fan. I really feel the publisher should change the Author's Notes to a Foreword and I urge anyone who chooses to read this to read the Author's Notes first.

Haunting Experiences: Encounters with the Otherworldly ReviewI've been a fan and follower of Michelle Belanger after seeing her on the Travel Channel and Paranormal State, but this is the first book of hers that I've read. And I admit I'm impressed. I was quite prepared to read a collection of "spooky" tales probably taken right from Michelle's travel journals, but what I got instead was even better. Michelle does not attempt to send chills down your spine or keep you up at night, although the occurrences in some of the stories might do just that. Instead, she presents you with a time and place and a specific scenario. She tells you what happened or how the people involved were affected. She shares how she helped or what her opinions of the situation were, all the while reminding the reader that she herself is always a skeptic. In some of the stories, she even presents a bit of history about the place or about the particular type of spirit she's dealing with. She also explores what causes a spirit or energy to take up residence in a specific place. The book ends with a not-so-haunted tale about when Michelle visited Ground Zero in NYC.
Overall, I thought this was a fantastic book because it's much more believable than some book that would try to target my fear. Michelle approaches each situation in a somewhat scientific way, maybe with a touch of religion, but always with an open mind and a bit of skepticism. She does not try to sway the reader to believe one way or the other. And her talent for writing definitely helps to keep the stories interesting. It's a short book at just over 250 pages and there are 21 short stories to ponder from when Michelle was a child to more recent, each unique in its own way. I was very impressed with the book overall and will definitely be seeking out more from Michelle!Haunting Experiences: Encounters with the Otherworldly Overview
