Inner Peace for Busy Women: Balancing Work, Family, and Your Inner Life ReviewInner Peace For Busy Women By Dr. Joan Z. Borysenko is a very nice surprise in that it is not a lot of advice about how to meditate, although this is one of her prime suggestions as a daily practice for gaining inner peace, but this 2 - CD set is her private sharing of the demons she has faced throughout her career as first a medical student/mother/poor housewife and through the years through divorce, single parenting, and balancing a demanding career as a doctor. The pain she experienced and the wisdom she gained she shares openly and especially deals with the persistent guilt of the working mother who is told by society that she can have it all, but in reality she is living a juggling act that kills relationships and individuals. She and her children succeeded through it all and have a loving adult relationship, although her marriage did not. She gives sage advice and encouragement to any woman walking this tight rope. EXCELLENT!Inner Peace for Busy Women: Balancing Work, Family, and Your Inner Life Overview

Sometimes He Whispers Sometimes He Roars: Learning to Hear the Voice of God ReviewChadwick's response to 9/11 was to pray. More than that, she writes, "He was calling me to become an active prayer warrior for a hurting and broken world that He deeply loves." (4) As her prayers expanded, she tried to be faithful and listen to God.
She saw a pattern develop and soon began teaching others the six steps to developing a deeper and more effective prayer life. The steps are interrelated - they depend on each other. The steps that she has laid out in this book have revolutionized her prayer life.
Be Alert to God and to the needs around you. You must be intentional at this, she says. She tells of the life changes she made to help her hear the quiet voice of God.
Be Specific, specific enough to recognize the answers as they come. She makes lists of her prayer requests and gives space in the book for readers to do likewise.
Pray With Authority, praying God's Word into situations. She provides a 21 day experiment to discover how God's Word can add power to your prayers. She shows how the prayer Jesus taught His disciples provides a well-balanced prayer diet.
Agree With Others in Prayer. Learn the power of agreement. It seems to ignite prayer with extra power.
Arm Yourself with Spiritual Strength for spiritual as well as earthly battles. Chadwick has learned that her prayer life works best when she is alert and self-controlled. She takes steps to connect with Jesus throughout the day.
Answer God's Call to go into the world with the good news of Jesus Christ and share His love. You will see the hurting people and the needs in the world. You will share in the sufferings of Christ.
Chadwick shares many stories of her own experiences and those of others. They are incredible and really encouraging. Chadwick shares what she has learned, the footprints she has left in her journey with God.
There are several added "bonuses" at the end of the book: personal reflection questions (useful for group study too), a leader's guide for discussion groups (great for novice leaders), a quick start guide to using her card system, and a list of additional resources chadwick has found beneficial.
This is a great book for any Christian who wants to see their prayer life rise to a more effective level.

Recipes for Life: My Memories ReviewHollywood memoirs are a dime a dozen, some salacious, some introspective. Linda Evans, who has been on the radar since her days as ingenue Audra Barkley on TV's The Big Valley in the 1960's, has written a unique memoir titled Recipes for Life: My Memories, that incorporates her love of cooking with her tales of living and working in Hollywood.
I was a big fan of The Big Valley and later Dynasty, which was a monster hit in the 1980s, and always thought that Evans was not only beautiful but also talented. This delightful book has fifty recipes interspersed throughout the book, along with many photos and memories.
She begins the book with her childhood, and includes a fantastic photo of her parents who were professional ballroom dancers in the early 1940s. When times were tough, her mother made Hot Dog Stew, the first recipe in the book. (It's actually two recipes, as she shares her version and her sister's version.)
Evans' memories of her co-star Barbara Stanwyck enthralled me, as I am a fan. Stanwyck was a big star, and she gave much advice to the young Evans during their Big Valley days, in her inimitable way, as only she could do. Evans shares a recipe she created called Missy's Hobo Fillet, based on Chasen's Hobo Steak, a Stanwyck favorite. I'm definitely going to try this one.
John Derek was Evans' first big love, and she was devastated when he left her for 15 year-old Mary Cathleen Collins, soon to be known to the world as Bo Derek. Evans had many romances after that, and they are recounted here with stories and photos, along with recipes from parties she hosted and attended. There are many recipes from friends; whenever she ate something she liked, Evans always asked for the recipes, including three from John Wayne himself.
She shares memories of famous friends and colleagues, like Steve McQueen, Richard Burton, and a long time friendship with David Janssen of TV's The Fugitive, along with wonderful spontaneous photos of them at parties.
Evans' made a lifelong friend, Bunky, who eventually became her assistant and traveled with her on jobs around the world. Bunky is quite a character, and brought out the silly side in the usually reticent Evans.
One of the unique things that I remember about Evans is her friendship with John Derek's ex-wives. Ursula Andress, Bo Derek, first wife Pati and her daughter Sean, and Evans all became good friends, and spent a lot of time together, even celebrating his birthday all together.
The Dynasty days are covered, and Evans and screen hubby John Forsythe became good friends. Evans spent a lot of time with John and his wife, dining and vacationing together. She does address the Rock Hudson issue. He was guesting on Dynasty as a love interest for Evans, and was reticent to kiss her in a big scene. Soon she found out it was because he had AIDS. Reading her recollection of the story illuminates the feelings of that not-so-long-ago era.
This is a terrific way to write a memoir; Evans loves to cook (she even finished first on Hell's Kitchen, a London TV cooking competition show) and so wrapping her memories around recipes and fabulous photos is a natural. She shares her own recipes, and recipes of famous chefs like Julia Child and Barefoot Contessa Ina Garten, and many of them sound mouthwateringly delicious. The book is so beautiful, I will have to take care when using it in the kitchen; I don't want to get anything on the pages!
Recipes for Life is a great gift for anyone who loves Linda Evans, as well as anyone who enjoys cooking. Some of the recipes are definitely challenging, but there are some simpler ones in there as well. It reminds me of Paula Deen's autobiography from a few years back- a fascinating life remembered in recipes.Recipes for Life: My Memories Overview

Love, God, And The Art Of French Cooking ReviewIf you applaud books on spirituality which are fun and light, yet profound, you may appreciate this book. If you believe that conversing about God shouldn't be heavy and pious, the French chef in this book would agree with you.
We all need to find our medium or passion in life as a means to experience joy, discern our purpose and contribute meaningfully to others. The author of this book, James Twyman, stumbled upon Chef Roger Dufau who uses food and cooking as a medium to teach spiritual and life lessons to reach and comfort people. It's Biblically-based as Chef Dufau notes as Jesus used the Last Supper to teach his disciples. Jesus's admonition to feed the hungry is equally paired with his admonitions to heal the sick and comfort the grieving.
When a romantic weekend went awry for Twyman at Chef Dufau's Bed & Breakfast outside Toronto, Chef Dufau's sensitivity intuits Twyman can use some care. Twyman's talks and meals with the Chef compel Twyman to examine his life history, motivations and MO in dealing with others. The author is candid with readers about his flaws and vulnerabilities. We can identify with and learn through his exchanges with Chef Dufau. They even travel to Paris for a luxurious master class with French Chef Alain Dutournier who, at the very least, teaches them about the power of generosity.
A favorite lesson in the book was the lesson of the garlic; sometimes we have to be smashed open like garlic to get at our essence or heart. Haven't we all experienced our orderly life getting smashed to bits which causes us to get humble and quit trying to control or manipulate outcomes? (I've been smashing my garlic ever since reading this, instead of slicing it. It's messier, but more pungent as the chef teaches.) Are we willing to let our lives get messy to learn more about our purpose, or find and follow a new direction?
Another favorite cooking lesson is doing more with fewer ingredients. We often think more in life is more. But as in cooking, the truly great recipes sometimes use fewer core ingredients so you can taste their essence. As in life--what do we need and have that really matters? What is essential for our growth and happiness?
This is a light, whimsical book with deep undercurrents. It may cause you to reflect upon your own life. More books on spirituality which don't preach at you, or make you feel guilty, but teach joyously and creatively as this one does are welcome. As Jesus did with his parables--what a delightful way to learn! This reminds me of a spiritual fable of sorts. Readers who like to read about love, God and French cooking will enjoy this spiritual triangle. Upon finishing this book you may want to make reservations at Chef Dufau's B & B for another course. The Greener Grass Conspiracy: Finding Contentment on Your Side of the Fence ReviewRecently, Crossway was gracious enough to send me (and 99 other bloggers like me) a copy of one of their new books, The Greener Grass Conspiracy by Stephen Altrogge. I had never heard of Altrogge, but I trusted Crossway, they haven't let me down yet. A few days ago, the small cardboard box with `Crossway' packing tape was sitting in my mailbox, so I started reading, not knowing what to expect.
What I got was a feast for my soul (more on that later). Altrogge writes of a worldwide conspiracy that is keeping the world (and Christians in particular) in bondage. He calls this "The Greener Grass Conspiracy", essentially a plot between ourselves, Satan and the fallen world we live in to keep us from finding contentment in Jesus. Altrogge starts off and convincingly lays out the conspiracy and the players:
"The world makes big, fat promises of immediate pleasure. It flashes its artificially whitened teeth and tells me to enjoy myself. The world lies to me....Satan Joins the world... Satan invites me to find satisfaction in something other than God. It doesn't matter if it's pornography or community service, as long as it's not God. Satan is happy as long as I'm not happy in God. Satan slanders God's character and his goodness. Satan Lies to me. ....My heart doesn't want to be left out of the conspiracy, and so it plays right along with the world and Satan. It tells me that I need to have certain things and I need to have them NOW." (p.12-13)
Altrogge writes with urgency and zeal to uncover and unravel this conspiracy. Stephen is well aware of the Spiritual War we are caught up in, that is "an all-out, no-holds-barred war taking place within us" (p.50). He writes as equal, a fellow brother struggling with the same three enemies aiming to take away his joy as well as ours. His book is practical, honest and pointed, Altrogge says "The Greener Grass Conspiracy" is "more like sweaty, bloody, hastily scribbled notes from a battlefield" than "the memoir of a contented man"(P.14). As you read, you easily connect with Stephen, his honest real life stories, and his imperfect yet mature walk with Jesus. Oh, and did mention, he is absolutely hilarious! I was getting some odd looks reading this book in public because I would laugh out loud somewhat frequently.
Like I said before, this book was a feast for my soul. In the footsteps of giants on the subject of contentment like The Rare Jewel of Christian Contentment by Jeremiah Burroughs and Spiritual Depression by D. Martyn Lloyd Jones, this book holds a mirror up to our fig-leaves and idols then gently, yet usually painfully points you back to the One who removes our fig-leaves and killed our idols on the Cross, Jesus. Sometimes when I was reading, I wanted to hang my head and weep, as I saw how ugly my sin was (in the midst of his very sarcastic, Jared Wilson-esque sense of humor). Especially in the fourth chapter, "I worship my television", which can be adequately summed up by Altrogge's final words of the chapter:
"But the sweet fruit of contentment can only blossom after you've ripped out the weeds" (P.44)
Altrogge points out both how we get wrapped up in the Conspiracy in both our religion and irreligion, and takes a hard, Gospel-centered line towards both. He urges and pleads with us to find our joy in Jesus, as he fights to do the same. This book is rich in scripture and quotes from dead guys, but it never comes off intimidating or academic but very, very practical. And it's overflowing with proclamations of the gospel, you cannot read this book without being forcefully shoved back to the Gospel of Jesus. It all at the same time wrecks and builds up the soul, purging sin for revelation of the Gospel. Altrogge brings it:
"The Father heaped the idolatry of millions upon Jesus and then punished Jesus as if he was the idol worshiper. It was as if Jesus was the pornography worshiper, job worshiper and vacation worshiper. Ever seen something so disturbing and revolting that you couldn't bear to watch? On the cross, Jesus was worse."(P.61)
The shocking honesty, undeniable wit (including a brief encounter with the King Solomon at Starbucks), amazing readability and Gospelicious nature of "The Greener Grass Conspiracy" have made it one of my new favorite books. I do not say this lightly, as I am pretty critical on books. And by all means, the book wasn't perfect, in fact, I wish it was a bit longer and I wish it dealt more with contentment within the context of Community (it does a bit, but that is a subject I am very interested in). But regardless, it is a Gospel tour-de-force.
One of the best features of "The Greener Grass Conspiracy" was the "Stop-Think-Do" questions at the end of each chapter. These are 5 questions at the end of each chapter that relate back to the content of the chapter, these questions are sometimes hard to answer and don't always let you off the hook with just pondering for a minute and moving on. Altrogge asks the reader to make painful lists, draw graphs and write down gospel-blessings, it's pretty sweet, but your pride will HATE it...."The Greener Grass Conspiracy" is not only good for personal devotions, but as curriculum as well (especially because of its easy readability and study questions provided in the form of the Stop-Think-Do). I am already thinking about ordering several more copies and using them in a small group study for some newer believers.
But at the end of a day, a book of Jesus is not good unless it stirs my affection for Jesus. This book certainly did, it encouraged me and turned my affections toward Jesus like books before it, such as Lloyd-Jones's "Spiritual Depression and Piper's Desiring God have done for me. This is a book for the trenches of Christian living, a book that grips you, pleads with you and asks you to look to the Gospel and say "Courage, dear heart"(P.127). For Christian's, I can not recommend this enough, and for non-Christians, if you are interested in Christianity, this is a great book to pick up to learn what the Christian life is all about: Jesus Christ.
Overall Rating: 9.5/10

The Storm Before the Calm: Book 1 in the Conversations with Humanity Series ReviewThe critically acclaimed and controversial Conversations With God by Neale Donald Walsch single-handedly changed the fundamental attitude of many individuals around the world about God and religion. During a devastating time in his life, Walsch reached rock bottom and turned inward, praying to God for answers. To his surprise and the surprise of his readers, he received responses to all of his questions, responses he believes arrived through direct communication with the Divine. Those answers, revolutionary and controversial, have been examined throughout the world, and they have shifted many preconditioned attitudes toward an entirely different meaning of life.
In The Storm Before The Calm, Neale Donald Walsch reexamines many of the ideas originally presented in Conversations With God. Fundamentally, the concepts remain the same. The human race is here on Earth, experiencing a physical existence, in order to remember that we all originate from one source, God, so that we can co-create our existence with all of the other individual expressions of God. However, this new book calls humanity to action, stating that the world's greatest problems are neither economic nor political, but rather spiritual in nature. Walsch is suggesting that a critical mass from around the globe must come together in the ultimate conversation to effect a paradigm shift that would ultimately eliminate poverty, reduce suffering, obliterate starvation, and ensure the most basic of rights to all of humanity: survival.
Walsch is inspirational in his challenging of the status quo, explaining how and why humanity shares certain political, economical, and religious viewpoints. He blames the consolidation of wealth and the grasp for power and world domination as the root causes to the problem. He also waxes philosophical in suggesting that humanity must shift from seeing life's circumstances as a dyad (black or white, fast or slow, light or dark) to a triad (black, white, and both; fast, slow, and both; light, dark, and both). He cites the religious teachings of Father, Son, and Holy Ghost as the three aspects of God and further demonstrates humanity's triad of body, mind, and soul, suggesting that many issues would be solved if we re-established a connection with our soul's purpose and better understood the continual evolution of our soul.
Throughout the book, Walsch regularly cites Wikipedia as a reliable and trustworthy source of information. Critics of the online encyclopedia have been able to find examples of grossly inaccurate information. However, overall, the tool has been proven as accurate, or more so, than many existing information resources. Essentially, what the world has done in creating Wikipedia, is exactly what Walsch is calling for in The Storm Before The Calm, so citing the resource is appropriate for this work. Walsh suggests that when humanity comes together as a critical mass, the culture shifts and amazing things happen. Essentially, this is what Wikipedia has done, bringing the world's resources together to create an online megasystem of information.
Where Walsch lost my interest was in some of his radical ideas relating to the resolution of poverty, global warming, and starvation. Although he states his ideas are merely a launching pad for further discussion, he is clearly passionate in his views. Many times, he suggests that we are destroying the planet and that overpopulation will ultimately lead to even greater lack of resources. Yet one of his fundamental concepts is that nothing can be created or destroyed since everything has always existed. He also claims that everyone could have everything they've ever desired if only they would shift their perspective and thinking. This is contradictory to his claims that the Earth does not have enough resources to support the growth of the human race. He also fails to cite the looming population decline in many of the world's largest cultures. All over Asia, Europe, and Latin America, fertility rates are on the decline. Walsch also suggests capping income and forcing any excess income over the cap into a global fund for redistribution. He states this is not socialism since the individual contributor would be able to designate 50% of the excess to the cause of his or her choice. I'm not sure the world is ready for such a radical concept, nor am I sure this is the right answer.
However, one could argue that radical problems require radical solutions, and Neale Donald Walsch is certainly offering creative solutions. By bringing the world together in conversation, he is inspirational in his call to humanity to rewrite its current story and culture based on asking and answering seven basic questions, outlined the book. The result, he hopes, would be a humanity that understands its connection to Divinity, its soul's purpose in being here on Earth, methods by which to end poverty and exploitation of the people and resources on the planet, and a culture shift from one of materialism to one of spirituality. The Storm Before the Calm: Book 1 in the Conversations with Humanity Series Overview

Cross-Cultural Psychology: Critical Thinking and Contemporary Applications (4th Edition) ReviewThis text has become an invaluable tool for the courses I teach in cross-cultural psychology, both at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Although many books purport to emphasize the integration of critical thinking skills with cross-cultural psychology, this is the only one that does so successfully. My students consistently rate it favorably, and I give it my highest recommendation.Cross-Cultural Psychology: Critical Thinking and Contemporary Applications (4th Edition) Overview

What Is He Thinking: What Guys Want Us to Know About Dating, Love, and Marriage ReviewIn her book, What Is He Thinking?? Rebecca St. James touches on a particular subject all of us women are curious about: what are guys thinking about?! Especially in the context of what they think and how they feel about dating, love, and women all together. With honesty and genuine curiosity, Rebecca describes her interviews with single, and married males from all walks of life, and also tells her readers about her personal experiences in the world of dating. Rebecca also touches on true stories-of young Christian women who are sold out on God, and who are willing to take on whatever He calls them to do with their lives, especially in the dating scene.
Rebecca covers a wide variety of topics in her book, offering insight into so many questions we as women have, but are not always able to find the answers to. "How important is physical attraction to a man, when they are looking for a woman to be with?", "What are guys looking for in regards to spirituality and a relationship with the Lord?". Rebecca answers these questions and more through her interviews with these men, and continues to list other questions single women have.
This book not only contains answers to the questions we have about the world of men, but it also includes some fun date night ideas as well as advice on how to let a guy know you are interested. It teaches you to be confident in yourself and in your relationship with God, because that is the most important relationship you'll ever be in. Talk about a guy being committed to you! To love and cherish you! To let no good deed of yours go unseen, and to know every thought, feeling, word, action....now that's what I'm talking about! Once you have established an unbreakable and confident relationship with the Lord, things will tend to fall into place, including your relationships with other men according to his will.
This book was helpful in reminding me about some of the biblical truths behind dating and marriage, and I am truly excited to apply these principles into my own dating life! I received this book, compliments of Propeller and Rebecca St. James for my honest review and would rate this book a 4 out of 5 stars; this being that though the content was priceless, it took a while to get the point across and was at times monotonous. What Is He Thinking: What Guys Want Us to Know About Dating, Love, and Marriage Overview

The Burden Of Freedom ReviewThe Burden Of Freedom explains that too many people use past oppression to remain mired in hatred and irresponsibility today. The spirit of oppression has specific telltale effects on individuals, communities, and nations. These are identified by Myles Munroe as a hatred for work, laziness, fear, low self-esteem, selfishness, lack of creativity, low initiative, and distrust of those in authority. To break free from these self-replicating cycles of oppression there must be a mental transformation. Paradoxically, freedom requires the need to impose control on self, require more responsibility than slavery, and the decision to accept a destiny of freedom, recognizing the process and discipline that personal and political freedom require. Simply put, The Burden Of Freedom should be available to every citizen and on the shelves of every high-school, college, and community library in the country. The Burden Of Freedom Overview

Solving the Communion Enigma: What Is To Come Review"What would the world be like without mysteries? It is a claustrophobic and desperate idea." This statement closes out the first section of the book and presents a core contrast between humans and the visitors, the intelligence that may or may not be an alien one. Our universe if full of mysteries, but the visitors' one is not. They've figured everything out...except us.
I've been a reader of Whitley's books since I was very young, and I've always been interested in the story Communion presented. I can still remember the alien face peering out at me from paperbacks lining the checkout lane at Osco. Many people have forgotten how big that book actually was. Somehow that subjective, tightly constructed non-fiction narrative of possible alien contact broke the barrier of mass awareness, but didn't create a wave of hysteria. Many people took it at face value, and then simply forgot about.
My recommendation is if you read Communion, you have to read this book.
There was not a lot of context in Communion. It was simply there and then gone, with some minimalist speculation in the last section. Now Whitley's had 25 years to pull things into focus and the things he's seen and researched in the intervening time are at the highest levels of intrigue.
From possible government experiments on children headed up by ex-Nazis in the late 1940's all the way to interactions with spirits of the dead during visitor encounters, you're going to get quite a lot of material to work with here. For a book of 200 plus pages it's quite dense.
When I was reading Transformation this week, the follow up to Communion, a friend of mine arrived and I showed him the book. He remarked, "Oh yeah this guy, you know he's a CIA shill." I found myself strangely defensive because my instincts have always said otherwise about Whitley. What would the CIA have to gain by using someone to publish the most coherent account of an alien abduction you can find in a library?
I feel like if there's any group pulling the strings on Mr. Strieber, it's the intelligence known as the visitors. Many people believe an alien presence would simply land somewhere and introduce themselves if they wanted to contact us. It's startling to think the actual contact is occurring on a personal level, in secret, but when you really contemplate that idea it makes the most sense. This is where Whitley comes in the picture for me. Contact was made in secret and then presented in public, for those who were ready to accept it. Communion was on the shelf and there for you to either pick it up or not. Luckily for the reader, we could be made aware of the presence without having to suffer the dire consequences of the real experience.

The Gift of a Year: How to Achieve the Most Meaningful, Satisfying, and Pleasurable Year of Your Life ReviewThis book is truly inspiring. I am ordering 3 more books to give as gifts to dear women friends who are all experiencing the same "emptiness" that has invaded my life. I seem to have it all: the degrees, the family, the relative financial security that the above all bring, but I have lost myself somewhere along the way. "Quiet desperation", but not knowing why. I have FOUND my answer by reading this book. It isn't magic, it isn't "hocus-pocus", it is identifying ME in my world, and taking a year to re-discover what makes me tick, what made me dream, what made me ME so many years ago. In the process, I'm already becoming a better mother, wife, friend, "employee" ... A MUST READ! Each woman inside herself has a spark, so many of us have let our other-self and other-roles smother that spark. No more. Give yourself the gift of this book, and then the gift of a year to regain that sparkle. The Gift of a Year: How to Achieve the Most Meaningful, Satisfying, and Pleasurable Year of Your Life Overview

Paper Angels: A Novel ReviewAs a fan of both authors of this book, I had looked forward to reading PAPER ANGELS for well over a year before it was released, AND I had very high expectations. I can honestly say my expectations were met and exceeded!
The Salvation Army Angel Tree program provides Christmas to disadvantaged children who would otherwise not receive gifts. Each child's name is written on a "Paper Angel" and placed on the Angel Tree to await being "adopted" by a kind-hearted person. Jimmy Wayne, co-author of PAPER ANGELS, was a Paper Angel child. It is from this experience, and with gratitude to those who gave, that PAPER ANGELS the book came to be.

Jimmy and co-author Travis Thrasher have created a touching and memorable Christmas story, yet PAPER ANGELS is so much more than just a Christmas story. It's an everyday story with realistic characters living lives familiar to many who might read this book. All the characters, minor to major, are people you know or see everyday...neighbors, friends, co-workers, the guy selling papers on the corner, the woman waiting tables at the local diner, the mean kid at school, the new kid no one knows much about, the businessman with a desperate look, a mom who dearly loves her children, a father worried about providing for his family, someone at risk of losing everything dear to them...they could be you.

The two main characters, 15 year old Thomas and 43 year old Kevin, come from different worlds and are at different points in their lives, yet something as simple as a Paper Angel randomly chosen from a Salvation Army Angel Tree links the characters together and begins a chain of events that changes both of their lives and those around them. As the reader takes this journey with them they experience every emotion possible...fear, hope, sadness, joy, humor, pain, questioning God, trusting God, anger, love, faith, forgiveness. There is a beautiful lesson for everyone in this story...adults, parents, teenagers, children. It's a story to be shared together as a family and passed along to friends. It opens one's eyes to seeking a better understanding of people you don't really know. It reminds us to appreciate what we have and the loved ones in our lives. It gives hope that a bad situation can be turned into good. It shows how a act of kindness can lead to something so much more and that forgiveness is one of the greatest gifts you can give to yourself.

Anyone who reads this book will enjoy it and be touched by its message, but for those who have supported Jimmy Wayne through the years and know his personal story, this book will carry even more meaning through the pieces of Jimmy's own life he and Travis have woven through the book. A line here, a little story there, a place or character that sounds familiar, little tidbits of information that only someone who has followed Jimmy's story would know. This touched me as much as the story itself because it made it so much more personal. For those not familiar with Jimmy's story, nothing is lost by not knowing these things. It would be my hope that after reading PAPER ANGELS more people will learn about Jimmy Wayne and the incredible dedication he has as an advocate for America's foster children and homeless youth.

Fans of Travis Thrasher will easily recognize that this is a true collaboration. While Jimmy Wayne is credited as the primary author of PAPER ANGELS, it is evident that Travis contributed much to the story and characters as well. Just as Jimmy's life experiences are reflected in the story, I believe Travis put much of himself into this story too. There is a definite chemistry at work between the two authors which makes the story even more honest and real and a pleasure to read. Those familiar with Travis's books and writing style know he is a gifted writer who refuses to be "branded". He has written beautiful, heartfelt romances and dark, make your skin crawl thrillers. Travis has used his talent perfectly in weaving together the characters and story of PAPER ANGELS to make it the moving and inspiring book it is.
Yes, PAPER ANGELS is a beautiful Christmas story...and so much more. It is a story that should be remembered and lived the whole year through. Buy this book, read it and be inspired to see the good in the world and to make a difference in someone's life. The first step could be this Christmas when you adopt a Paper Angel.

And as you read this book, should you question whether an act of kindness can change a life, give someone hope...stop and remember that the book you are holding is a dream come true for a man that once was a Paper Angel.

Christmas Is Not Your Birthday: Experience the Joy of Living and Giving like Jesus ReviewIf you are cognizant of "Christmas Creep", sound the alarm. Too soon, unfortunately, the American marketplace will begin their assault on the consumer, hitting us on all fronts with holiday displays, special sales and price breaks, winter festivals, and Christmakwanzaku music. Be prepared for the invocation of the sentimental, predation upon our desires to please (or impress) friends and family through lavish gifts, and encouragement to buy, buy, buy! Christmas, as we hear year in and year out, has become a celebration of our ourselves, our capacities to purchase, the derivation of pleasure from novelty, and a basking in the glorious privileges of credit. Christmas often has little to do with Jesus.
Pastors and church leaders are not immune, and must keep watch over their own souls, as well as the souls of those entrusted to their care. The dominant secular Christmas narrative is as much the fault of the church as it is a convenient foil for our exhortation. The Advent season requires preparation, and while I am hesitant to post this review so far in advance, knowing that contemplation of Christmas creep, consumerism, and a counter-attack strategy may only accelerate the spiral of what may one day be a year round Yule-tide shindig of buying and selling, I am willing to take the risk if exposure to resources like this one will help churches engage in a serious and informed discourse concerning how we should live by an alternative narrative.
Mike Slaughter, in his book Christmas Is Not Your Birthday: Experience the Joy of Living and Giving like Jesus, has launched an offensive on our prevalent, inwardly curved celebration of the birth of the world's Messiah. It is one such resource for establishing an alternative, truthful narrative needed during the Christmas season concerning both time (never in a hurry, for our Savior has come) and abundance (we have been given the riches of the Kingdom in Jesus the Christ). Rather than racking up debt, spending our resources on others either to impress or simply due to lack of self control, we can remember that in the manger, the payment of our debt has arrived, freeing us for generosity while also enabling us to live with frugality, discipline, and self-control, exercising faithful stewardship of our resources. Slaughter wishes for us to celebrate Christmas as the birth of Jesus, a beautiful child entrusted to a faithful woman, Mary, brought in to a world that was and is a mess to bring about redemption and hope and a foretaste of new creation.
Slaughter is the pastor of Ginghamsburg Church, located in Tipp City, Ohio. He is an ordained elder in The United Methodist Church, and is known widely as an excellent speaker who is passionate about discipleship and evangelism. His church has made a tremendous impact through The Sudan Project, funded in part by the generosity of his congregation, who have given to this initiative since 2005, leading to provision of education, clean water, and subsistence agriculture assistance for the Sudanese. Under Mike's leadership, Ginghamsburg has invested in excess of $5 million in the region of Darfur.
Christmas is Not Your Birthday is a continuation of the ministry Slaughter has begun with his people and for the Sudanese. The dream Slaughter has for the church is evident: he envisions a generous people willing to be dis-comforted by the realities of Christmas. Jesus was born under oppression, to a poor mother, in unsanitary conditions, and amidst suspicion regarding the legitimacy of his parentage. Yet in this same Jesus we find very God and very man, a treasure that has been birthed to the world that will one day lay down his life for the renewal of his creation. The miracle of Christmas, once it has been truly grasped, should lead to the outpouring of our lives on behalf of others. We should be willing to face the grim statistics concerning world poverty and disease, giving up our quiet family evenings surrounding a fire, singing quiet hymns, resting content in our privilege. We should be motivated to give, give, and give some more, in response to the abundance we have been given in Christ. Slaughter reminds his readers that they are God's mission sent to the world to announce the gospel and to live in light of it. We celebrate Jesus' birthday truthfully when we do the things that he commanded us to do.
Slaughter has provided church leaders with a short, helpful resource that can stir discussion and inspire action surrounding the meaning of Christmas. As you prepare for Advent and look forward to Christmas, consider picking up his book and let it inform your preaching, teaching, or your personal discipleship. Each chapter is followed by brief discussion questions, and the book is stocked with pastoral examples that illustrate the kind of generosity Slaughter envisions a faithful church putting in to action.
Pick up this book. Read it carefully. And lean in to Christmas with a spirit of adventure, with an openness to how God might transform your conceptualizations of what Christmas is and should be. Christmas should truly be a time of joy, thanksgiving, gratitude, and generosity. Oftentimes it is not. It is rather a time of stress, frustration, greed, and miserliness. Slaughter, pointing to the New Testament, gives us an alternative.
It is high time we pay attention. The birth of God's Messiah demands nothing less.
